@bracrowe - I share your plaudits for Ozawa - I first saw him conduct the Toronto symphony at Massey Hall (1962 or '63 I think) He was Guest Conductor at the time, and I will NEVER forget the transformation of the orchestra when they played Tchiakovsky's 5th Symphony.Fabulous!
I used to work at the Eaton's store on Yonge St (before the Eaton Centre opened!) and used to buy my tickets at at the Massey Hall Box Office during my lunch break & often snook in to watch TSO rehearsals. Memories!

Excelente video. Felicitaciones.

We can speak of Dr. Ozawa's prodigious accomplishments and talents, and they are gargantuan. When all is said and done, however, what he did for classical music in Asia will not be ascertained in a few moments notice. His work there remains immeasurable, for we know that he drew whole new audiences to the wolrld of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

@SFOtter it depends on the music. Have you heard his Mahler with Saito Kinen? Absolutely not prosaic and not overhyped by any means. The second symphony is on TH-cam, somewhere.

I played this piece w/ my high school orchestra but this austrian orchestra is quite an order higher caliber than mine. I don't like the conducting style but I like the music playing.

The Vienna Philharmonic is beginning to show its age. It needs a new Principal fultist for sure.

I remember an electrifying Bartok "Miraculous Mandarin" from Ozawa with the 2nd rank National Symphony of DC, but he was largely, even by then, a sadly prosaic and overhyped conductor.
