    In an age of Netflix, Prime, HBO Max, etc, I recognize the convenience these services provide, but I really do miss the days of going to the video store and renting a few movies for the weekend and making a point to watching them with family and friends. There was just something special about doing that.

    • @gspendlove
      @gspendlove ปีที่แล้ว

      We still have family movie night at my house. But you're right. There was just something about having to leave your house and actually go out to get a movie, and knowing you'd better choose wisely or your night was shot. And what was great about video stores was you could get everything there. They sold popcorn, soda, candy as well as the movies. However, modern life does have its compensations. You couldn't lug your TV and VCR with you when you had to go on an emergency trip, or if you had to spend a few days in the hospital. But now I've got my Fire tablet and I can watch a movie wherever there's wifi! Beat that, 1990s!

      It’s convenient just because you don’t have to go anywhere but it’s harder to browse and a pain to use. Plus It’s expensive to rent and the selection ain’t as good

    Kids, if you ever see "12 Monkeys", be like Gene and Roj, and watch it twice. Three times if you have trouble paying attention. The main reason is to connect the beginning and the ending, proving that Cole is a hero. The other reason is the complex, but very tight plot, which requires a full understanding to be appreciated. Possibly Gilliam's greatest film and a personal fave.

      Spoilers weren’t really a thing to get upset about at this time
      It was understood to discuss a movie you had to discuss it w details
      Social media led to omg spoilers mentality today I’d argue it’s even worse when people binge a whole show in one night then want to discuss it not w insight or critical analysis it’s either the biggest piece of shit ever made or the greatest thing ever
      Back when shows like this aired if a plot point was discussed it made you want to see the movie more
      What how did they pull that off kinda thing
      Again no one cried over spoilers
      Today you watch a movie review from a TH-cam personality it’s not an analysis of a film but dissection of every character every Easter egg reference the political and cultural inclusion of this or that
      Some of those things are fine but I don’t need a two hour review of a hour and half film about a superhero

Interesting to look back on their reviews of films that time has either been kind to or have been virtually forgotten. I remember a few worthy movies that didn't deserve their disdain ("Reservoir Dogs," "Brazil," "Splash," and in Roger's corner, "Blue Velvet"), but I always enjoyed watching them talk about something they were clearly so passionate about. "Menace" is not satirizing the good movies that it mimics, it's using the familiar images from those movies to satirize racist stereotypes. Ebert often said he judged a movie based on context, in this case he needed to zoom out just a little bit more, just a little bit, and he would have seen a vaster forest for the trees.

    • @maxxxmodelz4061
      @maxxxmodelz4061 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha. Yeah, Roger was a little hard on this one, but he was correct. If anyone white was associated with this film, it would instantly be a racist exploitation picture. The only reason we laugh at it is because it's black people making fun of themselves for a change. I found it funny, but probably for the exact reasons Roger mentioned. 9 out of 10 times I agree with Roger's reviews, especially on anything "serious", but he often doesn't like light hearted comedies.

    This is a great episode! I love From Dusk Till Dawn, 12 Monkeys, Don't be a Menace and Eye for an Eye. They were seriously misguided and unnecessarily harsh on Eye for an Eye (along with Ebert on Don't be a Menace) giving it a negative review based on 1 (admittedly poorly written moment) question that was asked in the film that the film isn't even about. There is a lot of great stuff (and other topics) that were overlooked by them from the film.

    That is actually one of my favorite things about 12 Monkeys, that, as he starts believing that he's mentally ill she simultaneously is starting to believe that he actually is a time traveler. Then she thinks they're BOTH mentally ill when she makes that recording...until he recites it back to her verbatim and now they both know that he really is a time traveler. Great movie. But I often wonder if his psychiatrist, now armed with the info on the virus such as who had it and where it came from, was able to get that info to the right people to change history or if this is a time loop that cannot be altered. I have not seen the 12 Monkeys TV show, so maybe they cover that.
