      I've been out of the night life for a while now. Back in the 1995-2014 range people didn't really want to share drinks aside from maybe one person having a sip of some alcohol. We certainly didn't pass a drink around bc we all knew that it would spread germs. And now it seems as if people are saying they regularly pass around a vape? We passed cannabis around bc that's just how it was done. But if people are passing around nicotine like it's a weed smoking event, idk. lol

      I think that's even worse than sharing one set of tonsils and a plate to feed the same amount of people, because vaping is by far more invasive and affects parts of the body that are not as well protected as your stomach is. Regardless, I cannot see anyone sharing their dishware with that much people willingly, while not at all strange to see vape pen or similar getting passed on.

    • @nacoran

      That's the joke rule that we pass around in the harmonica world... would you be willing to kiss them? If not, don't share a harmonica...
      But as I was watching this it occurred to me that maybe that wasn't such a good rule. Say I walk into a roomful of beautiful female harmonica players... should I risk using all of their harmonicas? Now, if there is a particular female harmonica player that I am, in fact, on kissing terms with, regularly kissing, yeah, it's probably okay to share a harmonica with them.
      Same goes for a vape... just because someone you would kiss offers you a vape doesn't mean you should take it. It's not all that hard to get your own harmonica or own vape if you really want to play or to vape, but unless you are getting the benefits of getting to make out with someone, why swap spit?

    That’s such a great advice! You will definitely be an amazing father one day. Not only because you’re a doctor, but also because VAPING AND EVEN SMOKING CIGARETTES is not healthy. Teaching your kids to be healthy and not smoke or worse, drink alcohol, is a great advice. I was never a vaping fan. When I was younger, due to the bad influence from the other people, I did smoke cigarettes, and now I realize how stupid I was for doing that to myself. Now I finally pulled myself together and I will never want to touch cigarettes ever again. They tried vaping before it was cool though, but luckily, they stopped before it turned into a serious habit for them. And yes, I know, most people consider addiction a disease, but I luckily don't look at it that way. In Latin America we have a drink called "mate" and it's basically a social drink that you drink from a metal straw and share around with other people. Since COVID a lot of people have started bringing their own mate to social gatherings to avoid sharing, but it is still very much a big part of our culture to drink from the same one. This would be our equivalent to vaping, since vaping isn't a thing here, but I haven't noticed it cause any type of throat issues in anyone, at least not in Argentina.
    It's very interesting to see how practically the same activity has different reactions in two different places, probably due to the fact that we're exposed to different things.

This causes animal borne antibiotic resistant bacteria to spread resistance to bacteria that infect humans. Walmart has an entire portion of their meat section devoted to antibiotic free meats. I do not eat beef or pork, but the harvest land brand of chicken has been confirmed by mother Jones magazine as living up to their pledge of " no antibiotics ever." • @Nefville
      @Nefville ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phaedrapage4217 Smoke is always worse because you are combusting whatever material it is, tobacco or weed and there are tons of byproducts from doing that. Smoking weed is definitely better than tobacco, there are all kinds of additives and fillers in cigarettes for a lot reasons like low tar and flavor consistency. There are literally thousands of chemicals in cigarettes. Smoking weed definitely creates some byproducts like carbon monoxide and benzene plus there might be some chemicals that were used for growing the plant and because its not processed like a THC vape is a lot of them could remain. For that reason vaping is always going to be the less risky option. THC vapes are just turpines, thinning agents (things like VG & PG which nicotine vapers have been vaping for over a decade without issue) and food-safe flavors. But something like switching to a nicotine patch and vaping THC is going to be about as low risk as you can get. Certainly better than smoking either weed or cigarettes.

    "Social Sharing" is the cause of a great many outbreaks I think. We're social creatures, we thrive on social interaction. It's rare for someone to be a true loner and not interact with anyone unless they absolutely HAVE to (I'm one such person). I get "sick" very very rarely as a result of my non-interactivity. My "illnesses" are more related to my joint health and Malignant Hyperthermia condition. The flu? The common cold? Hell, even Covid? I honestly can't remember the last time I got sick with a bug like those... It's been well over two decades now. Don't share body fluids unless you mean to be intimate, folks! :)

I'm glad Dr. Mike is shedding light on this possibility, but I don't think it will be easy to stop people from sharing vapes because there's a huge stigma if you don't share a hit or two. You're considered rude or a bih if you don't let someone hit the strep stick

    Regarding vaping and all those who seem to think it’s harmless: I substitute teach, and I had a student I think three years ago who confided in me that he was trying to stop vaping because his slightly older cousin, a heavy user, had become seriously ill and had to have a double lung transplant. As I recall, the condition was then being called “popcorn lung.” My recollection is that the sick boy was 17 or 18.

    • @Jessiegirlcasual
      @Jessiegirlcasual ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t get popcorn ling from vapes anymore. They removed the chemical from the vape juice that could have potentially caused popcorn ling. To date there is t a single documented case of popcorn lung being caused by a vape pen. There were workers in factories that produced the now banned chemical that did get popcorn lung though, and that’s what caused that chemical to be banned from vape juice.

But now that going up because of vaping because it’s not being used to get people off cigarettes but by people who have never touched cigarettes. And sure its not nearly as bad a cigarettes, but the healthiest thing for most people is to not put anything other than air into your lungs.
    And a seemingly hidden fact is a lot of vape companies are owned by the same cigarette companies that lied to us about the safety of smoking.

    • @Daytruin
      @Daytruin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      batteries usually don't just explode without good reason , it would have been due to stress put on the battery and that likely would be due to a short caused by making contact with conductive material like people leaving a battery in their pocket without some kind of proper casing or the battery has defects or is generally at the end of it's cell life and is fired on something like a custom built mod that does not have voltage regulation and other safety features. It is quite rare for a battery to explode without it being caused by ignorant people misusing them. I've been vaping since pretty much the start when voltage regulation wasn't really a thing yet and never had a battery explode because i made sure i knew how they worked and didn't do stupid things like try to build my own coils with the wrong material where the battery would short and cause fire or boom. It does happen but people keep passing around the same ignorance and misinformation creating phobias about something pretty harmless and relatively safe when in responsible hands.
      The car going over a battery maybe could cause it to explode but i even find that to be pretty unlikely though hard to say since i don't have more details. Yes batteries can make a pretty loud pop as they are holding a lot of energy and vape batteries are designed to discharge that energy quickly unlike something like one used in a digital clock or watch or even phones.
      anyway i'm done ranting, just wanted to clear up some things even if it is sub par.

No more meds, no more tests and no longer bothering with doctors. Rheumatologist says I’ll be dead in five years without treatment, so be it. Most medical professionals don’t actually care about their patients or hear them, how I ended up in the hospital because my adrenal gland failed. I am also a Family Medicine doctor like Dr. Mike. I agree sharing a vape pen increases the risk of infections such as strep, but do not forgot all the extra things someone touches while going on vacation. For example, when you hand your ID to the TSA to look at, the TSA officer has touched hundreds if not thousands of other ID's that day (some from people who are ill). You sit in the germy airport chair, airplane seats, exchange money, touch the slots, poker chips, door handles, etc. So in my humble opinion, the added exposure of touching all those surfaces is why people often come back ill (strep or virus) from vacations.

And as anyone who has gone through boot camp will tell you hurts ten times worse than getting stung by a bee. • @Daytruin
      @Daytruin ปีที่แล้ว

      banning single use vapes is like cutting the leaves off of the weeds in your garden, it is not the root of the issue and is silly. parents are the key and that is a social issue and one that the government should stay away from. Communities need to educate their members and reach out to those parents and help that way. kids can't buy these things as it is already illegal to sell to minors and the way kids get them are through their parents, or friends that have parents that buy it for them. The kids get it from third party sources and that again is a community issue and a parenting issue at large and i can't stress that enough.

      It's a combination of hype and addiction. Smoking or vaping is seen as badass because of 80s and 90s movies and teenagers want to be cool (believe me, I was a teen once). Second is, vaping leaves no smell, is relatively cheap and a lot of websites deliver them to you without checking your age and in discreet packaging (if you ask them). It starts off with trying to be cool and ends up with a person being addicted. And vapes are popular because of the reason above. They're very hard to detect as they leave no smell so grown-ups can't catch you and they come in "fun" flavors.

      just drink more fluids. and yes i'm guessing it is the propylene glycol that is most commonly used in the vape juices as the delivery chemical that allows nicotine to be inhaled the way that it is. If you just drink plenty of fluids it will likely counteract that issue. Been vaping for a long time and i've noticed getting dry mouth and air way from time to time if i'm not giving myself enough fluids and taking breaks from the constant bombardment of the stuff. I am otherwise quite healthy other than my lack of working out and not eating my weakness of carne asada fries. I wonder if strep was just considered an all-time low during covid because most primary care offices were closed and many people, who would have been seen and diagnosed with strep, stayed at home and were not formally (for data wise) diagnosed with strep. Not promoting vaping or sharing any germs, just thinking in general most the strep infections are with the pediatric population who will always pass around everything (share drinks. not wash hands...), they were for the most part not seen in office by covid (unless emergency- which strep is not), so less diagnosis.
    Though vaping, besides for the harm it causes, can also be a source of spreading germs (not just strep).

      they are simply vaping in secret. But yeah, they cough like that and don't even realize it's an issue.

      A felony? Seriously? I highly doubt that. Show me where in the municipal code that is.

    • @phaedrapage4217
      @phaedrapage4217 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I can find, it's only in public areas and it's the same as smoking cigarettes in public. It's a fine, not a felony.

    Can you speak about the harms of vaping on a realistic level? I vape and am really uneducated on the possible consequences due to misinformation, however you're a doctor I trust to do the most research to come up with some really helpful, possibly life saving information I could fall back on to motivate me to quit.

      Nicotine is a neurostimulant which promotes faster brain function. Inhalation isn't the best route of administration, but vaping with propylene glycol and not vegetable glycerine should be faar better than smoking a ciggie. Patches are available and work quick but most consumers like the inhalation and hit. You can make your own patches or droppers to drop under tongue as alternative to vaping
      No info on sharing vapes, but I consider it the same as sharing a bowl of cereal. Up to the owner of the body to decide the risks of herpes, strep, mono, flu, ect. We have amazing complex immune systems yes, buut we cannot fight off herpes.

    Would you ever talk about the long-term effects of chemicals in our drinking water in America? Not a lot of people cover it. We all know how detrimental drugs can be by now but there are other things killing us.

      I’m concerned about this also. I’ve been hearing about forever chemicals too. No wonder American children are experiencing endocrine & hormonal problems.

    0:52 - And sometimes a patient tells you their throat hurts worse than strep, something is seriously wrong, and they feel antibiotics would be the smart choice, but the doctors say "nah, you tested negative for strep."
    Then 3-4 days later, the doctor calls you up in a panic & says your lab tests came back positive for *STAPH INFECTION* in your throat, and you NEED to get on antibiotics ASAP... Imagine how mad you'd be if you tried pleading with your doctor & explaining you had strep many times as a kid, but this is significantly worse, only to be denied.
    I lost 10 lbs in a week, couldn't swallow anything, had to let jello melt in my mouth & drip down my throat, as the staph infection grew worse for days before the doctor put me on antibiotics. It was one of the worst infections/illnesses I've ever had. Staph in the THROAT was miserable.

    I just want to add in reference to the Vegas anecdote: the air in vegas is extremely dry, the tap water is pretty gross (at least in my experience) and there is smoking indoors in the casinos and many other bars and clubs. Last time I went without a humidifier I thought I had covid every morninf I woke up my throat hurt so bad. It was entirely just the dryness and second hand smoke.
    But yeah, if you're gonna vape, don't share pens, it's a cesspool of bacteria.

    Dr. Mike, with all due respect, DUH! The fact this needs to be pointed out makes me worry about our species. Putting something in your mouth that has been in someone else's mouth is like letting them spit in your mouth. Doesn't matter what it is- a vape, a pipe, a straw, whatever.

    I had strep several years ago, no idea where it came from. It was the worst throat pain i've ever experienced, i'm no bich, but the pain was easily 9/10. I used the sprays (no effect), i used strong pain relief (a mild effect). Going to the doctor and asking for meds was almost as painful as having the virus. Every time you swallow your spit it was hot razor blades.

    Sometimes strep presents a-typically, especially in kids, so if you are sick and not getting better just get the strep test done!
    My son tested positive for strep with none of the usual symptoms.

    I don't vape but i did get strep throat when my kids were little while my then husband was in Puerto Rico and my parents were in San Diego. It was hell but I finally was able to drive myself to the ER one morning after taking them to school and, sure enough, I had strep and a peritonsillar abscess. I barely remember that day but thankfully a friend of my mom's daughter was able to pick me up and help me with my little kids.

    Not sure if someone has also asked:
    My main question is if second-hand vaping causes any issues as second-hand smoking does. While I don't personally smoke or vape, a ton of students around me do. Even if someone isn't sharing a vape with someone else, that exhale out could also pollute the air with bacteria and viruses.
    If I'm wrong about any of this, please correct me! :)

    • @MarsBarwho
      @MarsBarwho ปีที่แล้ว

      it definitely does cause issues like second-hand smoking, but that’s with the chemicals. Apart from sharing the vape which spreads germs, I don’t think it changes the amount of bacteria and viruses that people breathe out without a vape anyways? idk lol

    I have gone to many concerts and festivals this summer and I see that all the time, and more. While I smoke my inhaler being surrounded in a sea of people vaping in my face, many times people are sharing. And being rubbed against people can making you sick too and yet I still go.

    This legit happened in my vicinity at my job over the summer. One person had COVID but they shared their vape pen and by the next day half of the staff tested positive. I knew I was negative as I tested multiple times (as an asthmatic I have similar symptoms). Thankfully dodged a bullet on that one.

    Sharing spoons and utensils can also spread strep in children. It is very important to treat strep throat in children, as the risk of heart and kidney damage is higher in children.

    DR Mike in one of your videos you said that you will never wear black scrubs again cuz people don't really trust on the one who wears black scrubs and now you are wearing it although it is looking good on you and we already do trust you but when I saw you in those scrubs I just remembered that short and that's why I out of curiosity just commented about those scrubs 😶‍🌫😶‍🌫😶‍🌫😶‍🌫😶‍🌫
