  • 1969 Tamiya 1/25 Russian Tank Destroyer SU-100, Kit No. DT110-1200
To start the year off, here’s another Tamiya 1/25 model kit from my father’s collection. It has individual track links, one crewman and is motorized (RE-36), although none of Dad’s SU-100 kits came with motors.
When Dad would build a kit, he usually wouldn’t bother with the figures. So those and any other unused parts would be added to the boxes of his duplicate kits. Guess who I found hiding in this kit? I thought he deserved a close-up shot. 🙂
The wonderful box art is also to be noted! I believe it was @modelermark172 who commented before that the vehicle in the background is a German armored train (BP-42.) I hope you enjoy!

I started building models in 1970, MONOGRAM, REVELL…
    Then I discovered TAMIYA
    I thought WOW…
The box art was just TOO COOL…
    I wanted all their stuff…
No, I didn’t see this one on the shelves…
All I thought was, as a 10 11 year old was how I was going pay for them…
    I’m enjoying your channel

I remember all the Tamiya kits on the shelves at K-mart back then. When they discontinued carrying them, they put all they had (on the one down the street) on blue light special. Pop went down there and bought them all (40+ kits) and brought them home. He put them in front of me and said, "Get to work!" I started with the Flak 36/37 because it was the newest kit. When I finished it I built the 8 ton halftrack. It was during the Winter, so I kept getting high on the glue and paint fumes, until Pop told me to crack the window, which made me freeze. I didn't care. I was in model kit heaven. Wish I had saved all those really old kits with the awesome backgrounds in the box art. Those were the days.

With part of my collection I kit/bash- scratch built one of the BP-40 train cars. It was made out of the LGB Mail container engine. By removing the outer cab and building a box over the motorized area and modeling with styrene card sheets building the basic shape adding detailing. The LGB train cars are 1/22.5 scale making them close to the 1/25 scale size, And yes the basic motorized container train engine was costly around $275.00 in 2005, and they don't manufacture them anymore the mail container set. And when I got the set of 1 engine and 1 flatcar set it was around Christmas time and the train set was on sale. The BP-40 car is about 18" long. As I incorporate G gauge train cars into my military vehicles collection.

That sounds amazing! You have some really great ideas. :-) Are you just a hobbyist or do you build/display for the public?

This was one of the first kits I purchased in 2001 and mine was wire controlled. It cost $99.99 and I modified the side tool boxes so they could open up to see some tools I put in them. It was before they added the logs to one side. As the kits now have the logs for extra details. And I purchased it from a local hobby shop in Phoenix without having to order it. Now a days if you can even find one it has to be ordered.

Nice old kit. I remember a lot of the early Tamiya kits. This one is single motor so it is the first issue of the 1/25 SU-100. Later it got two motors and a wired Remote Control box. Then re-issued 2 or 3 times as a static model. I managed to snag the 2013 static release.

That's very interesting about the number of motors. Dad just has several of this early kit so I didn't realize. Thanks for commenting!

@@vintagemilitarymodelkits The 1/25 had one or two motors. The 1/35 one motor. I have a 1/35 Gepard that had 3 motors. One for the turret. I only had the 1/35 kits back then (mid 60s).

@@vintagemilitarymodelkits It was. Left and right tracks. 3rd motor to rotate the turret. All in 1/35 scale.

This looks like a good, solid kit of the famous Soviet WW2 Tank Destroyer. In addition to individual track links, it looks like you get markings for Poland and Egypt as well as Russian, and at least one figure to work with. Sadly, you don't seem to get any accessories, so a straight build with appropriate weathering on a simple terrain base is about all you would be able to do with this kit. But it could make a very impressive display piece!
Gotta love the box art at 0:14. I wonder if Tamiya ever considered any Armored Train elements in 1/35th or 1/25th scale when they commissioned the original artwork . . . ?
    Happy New Year!

We always appreciate your perspective on the kits and that's an interesting thought on the artwork. That train would have been a really cool model to build!

Other than the 1/72 scale Hasegawa kits of the K5(E) "Anzio Annie" German Railway Gun from 1975, and the German 600mm Mörser "Karl" in transport mode from 1976, there really were no military railroad subject kits available. Then some 20 years later (1997) Dragon / DML started bringing out 1/35 scale railway subjects, like the Schwerer Panzerspähwagen, Infanteriewagen, and Artilleriewagen, as well as some rolling stock. Around the Turn of the Century, other manufacturers started coming out with elements for the BP-42 Armored Train shown on the boxart of the SU-100.
I really don't know why it took the manufacturers so long to address this subject, but now it is well-covered in both 1/72 and 1/35 scale. Still, modeling the full-length BP-42 would probably cost over a thousand dollars, and require a shelf eight to twelve feet long to display it . . . .
      Thanks for sharing!
