The best way to monetize Dreams, I believe, is to build up an IP or to create animated series that can be uploaded to TH-cam or getting sponsorship. I think in game monetization would be the death of Dreams.
Building an IP that you can make value away from Dreams - that has interest to other businesses or productions could be a game changer for a creator thanks for highlighting this!
Definitely I feel the same. They’re starting with Kickstarter but I don’t think it’s too far away from the point you could possibly start shopping it around
Maybe yeah. It could be something they don’t plan to upgrade for a few years if ever. But if I’m right and Dreams gets PSVR2 support (which I’m sure Playstation will want to use it to push) it will need to have a dedicated PS5 version at the very least
I am completely sure that in a more mediamolecule time it will work to motivate so many creators with some reward in the future, they are geniuses, they know the time that a good creation requires, as they are professional developers. I think that in a while the discussion of whether to monetize the creations or not will open up as Dreams matures with its users. I love Dreams, I am sure that we will achieve great things in a short time.
The complex part will always be the split for assets used from multiple users in a collaborative project. Beyond that, I don't see why it couldn't be an even share for the creators, MM and Sony. Provided a game / video / project doesn't infringe on IP and is polished to a specific level, it feels like Sony and MM have a lot of untapped opportunities here. Especially when you consider how accessible dreams is as a creation engine.
Pro monetization. It's a powerhouse. I bought music software years ago that was 10x expensive and only did music. And dreams music creation is amazing.... Just that alone. I can't wait to be exporting to 3d printers from dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. Gamers almost often consider the value of Dreams based on what it offers in terms of gameplay e.g Arts Dream and community levels but as a tool it has amazing value - especially if you’re considering using it for professional purposes.
Lbp was 1st advertised as selling ur levels for say a quid. They said 1million downloads that's 1million pound. I think that's where the monetized thinking originally begun. They shouldn't have said it tbf.
I don’t remember that ever being advertised but I had a look and sure enough the CEO of Playstation did tease it for LBP. That would have been well ahead of the game - mad they’ve been thinking about it all this time and still can’t work out the legalities
I just got a idea when watching this. Have you ever heard of a software called meshroom. It software design for 3d scanning which work by taking a collection of images and turn them into a 3d mesh to be use in real game engine and 3d software. As you said there a way to get image but not the sculpter. There also 3d printing. If this theory works .
Not sure if it’s the same software but Martin mentioned in the video suggests this exact process - I think he even does it for a small fee on Fiver. Thanks cor highlighting this Lawrence it’s another way to export from Dreams!
So I can use Dreams as an artist. I was wanting to create character art and concept art with it for 3D stuff that I could take outside of the game, but wasn't sure I'd be able to. Good to know I can.
When you look at a game like Rec Room. A social game similar to dreams where players can create stuff in game. They added monetization and the quality of creations plummeted significantly. Because unlike how you mentioned the creation remixes and multiple different people working on the same thing you can take someone's assets and monetize your game and the original creator gets nothing. Now most games you will come across are low effort "Cash Grabs" where things are poorly made and theres a bunch of buyable things. So if Media Molecule allows monetization they'd better do it in a fair way and so there is a motive to keep creating good quality creations rather than something low effort.

Dreams definitely should allow people to monetize their gameplay creations. As far as the question about who owns what that can be solved by making it only possible to monetize works that are created entirely by the creator with no assist used by other people. I would like to use dreams to make full fledge games but right now that doesn't make any sense with no way to directly monetize the game.
That's a quick solution but you do cut the legs off of one of the best parts of the engine. Its thanks to community assets you can have such quick workflows and playtesting and there are a very games currently in Dreams that haven't benefited from it
@@UglySofaGaming I don't have Dreams yet or a PS5 for that matter I am just waiting for them to release PSVR 2 before I buy anything. I’m not looking to make money or to get into that complicated system. I just want to get my original project out of my head and into the dreamiverse. I tried in LBP but it didn’t get too far.
If you have some experience with more traditional game development you could find something like Unity easier, or more efficient/practical at least. But in terms of a hobbyist/casual game making tool it doesn’t get easier than Dreams without limiting your options. Learning curve on Dreams is super steep still but you don’t have to learn everything and can plug your holes with community creations and smart choices e.g It’s hard to accurately animate a character so we made our game first person.
Excellent video, guys, subscribed! I don't think ingame monetization can be a way to make the game more interesting, but officially allowing creators (all creators) to monetize their works made in Dreams can be an opportunity. 3d export and game export can also be an amazing way to let creators monetize their work...like manking a game in Dreams, exporting it and selling it on Steam for example. Or even just making videos, concept art, like Master Martin Nebelong teaches :) But anyway, also allowing players to get commissioned for assets is not a bad idea. To me Dreams is firstly a powerful engine, not really a "game". I hope MM doesn't let Dreams die by taking too much time in taking a decision and making improvements.
