- I had a lot of requests for this classic and it's one of my absolute favorites. This is a perfect example of a song they could not write today. The melodic theme and happy energetic style is reflection of
the world at that time in America which is opposite of what we see today.
I could not find a decent recording of this song on TH-cam. I'm so sick of pages of recopied distorted mp3's so I pulled a copy of this song off a radio station. It was a mono but I turned it into a nice stereo version. It took 22 tracks which I think was the most I used on any song so far. I had to keep layering the instruments until I got the sound I wanted. I found out Dusty's real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien!
I was a senior in high school in my car when I first heard this girl from England singing she only wanted to be with me. She was with me while in the Marines during Vietnam. She was with me during long hard years of physical rehab and sorrow and heartache. Then, one day, Dusty had to go away. I'm sorry, Dusty, sorry I wasn't able to thank you for all your wonderful music. But, I could have sworn those many years ago you were sitting next to me in my car and singing this song to a lonely teenage boy.

The first time I heard this song by Dusty was in my daddy's Cadillac driving California's Hwy. 101 southbound towards Disneyland. That's when radio was still magical. Dusty made it magical.
Dusty helped make Mexican singer Luis Miguel famous. His 1987 remake of this song,
"Ahora te puedes Marchar" was a no 1 hit in mexico and several other countries. His video has over 700 million views.

I was a school girl, age 15 when this song came out, and I still listen to Dusty Springfield's golden greats today in 2022.
The lady was and still is an icon.
Jean Ryder, the ex-wife of songwriter Mike Hawker, "I Only Want to Be With You" was written soon after she and Hawker married on 1 December 1961, being inspired by Hawker's intense romantic feelings for his new bride. Ryder, who would later be a member of the Breakaways, had been a member of a vocal chorale, the Vernons Girls. Reportedly, she and Hawker had intended that she herself would record "I Only Want to Be With You".
Dusty Springfield, approved the song, which Dusty recorded in a late1963 session at Olympic Studios. Jean Ryder was included in the vocal chorale on the session. For unknown reasons, a version with Springfield's unadulterated vocals was rejected. The song was produced using the Wall of Sound production method first conceived by Phil Spector, while the various instrumental features in the arrangement such as backup singers, double-tracked vocals, and a horn section were inspired by groups such as the Shirelles.

Dusty could sing the phonebook and make it sound sexy! Love the cleaner sound of this mix.. vocals up front..clapping hands heard...strings alive..and the elimination of distortion.

Yes, this is a a great mix with nice clarity. You can really hear Madeline, Kee Kee and Lesley doing their back-up vocals.

It's a fabulous enhancement, the composers must have been very pleased when they heard the finished product back in '63. It stands the test of time very, very well. Also, it seems to be a song that seemingly can't be spoiled regardless who records it. One of my desert island favourites for sure.

Actually I need to redo it and make it much better. I slapped this together and it's very sloppy. I've since earned to put in the time to each song no matter how long it takes so that they are absolute best enhancements I can make. These incredible recording artists deserve it. It takes a tremendous learning cure and there is no manual on how to do it so I'm learning from prior mistakes. Kenn

Actually you are correct! Dusty DID own her Philips records recordings. She had to sell the entire library when she had cancer just to pay for treatments etc.!

Sir, you do amazing work. I am not a technician but appreciate what you do. this is so much more robust than the original. Yet you NEVER lose the authenticity of the original.
Thanks Marc! Glad you like it. Producing these enhanced version draws a fine line between how much to add and yet not destroy the original. The originals are irreplaceable because of the era they come from so I try to do them as artfully and tastefully that neither the original artist , the record company or fans would not be disappointed. That is a tall order for guy with home recording equipment
but I enjoy the challenge! Kenn
