Hi. You mentioned that it is not good to cut down a Hawthorne Berrie tree, but is it okay to trim some of the branches off that are overgrown. Many thanks Donna
In Ireland, that superstition still lasts, a motorway down to Cork was moved a few meters to the left in order not to cut down an ancient Hawthorn about 10 years ago. Sceach Geall in Irish, means Bright Tree….
Just purchased a property that has a bunch of Hawthorne trees so I'm going to have to try this recipe. As a beekeeper though, it hurts to see the honey boiled like that. I may try a small batch like that, but by heating the honey up that much, you kill all the natural enzymes and nutrients in the honey. It might be better to simmer down the Hawthorne puree with the lemon juice until you have a nice think, almost dry paste and then once cooled, mix with good raw honey. If you get the moisture content way down on the puree, the honey shouldn't ferment and, if stored properly, it should last a long time.
I also thought the heated honey part could be adapted... Or recommend rapadura)coconut honey. Collected 6 c of haw berries at my cousin's farm in NE tassie and got to the puree stage before heading to shoot off and catch my flight! X
That honey looks lovely, I’ll certainly be doing it, but to preserve my honeys good enzymes I’ll simmer just the hawthorn juice down and then add to honey. 💕
Fun fact about yew: the berries are safe to eat as well. You’ll just have to take care not to scratch the pit. This is in order to keep species who would hurt the seed from eating it and other species like birds who swallow the berry whole without damaging the seed safe. If you don’t feel safe eating the seed (I know I don’t), you can also just suck the flesh off it. It’s very sweet and jelly like.
Hello , i just moved to a beautiful rural area in the mountains of New Hampshire, USA. Today walking my dogs we found several hawthorn trees loaded with berries and picked loads of them. Thank you for this perfect video!
Such an adorable couple. Love your presentation and all the information from the seemingly trivial to the profound - it's all important. Thank you for your input into spreading such invaluable knowledge. You are the best!
I love the hawthorn! ❤️ Made my first hawthorn ketchup last fall and it was so good. (Especially nice for me as I don’t like tomato ketchup!) Good for our hearts literally and figuratively.
Some lovely new ideas to preserve haws. Thanks. I make infused vinegar and a tincture with vodka...was also considering a jelly but honey seems much healthier 💚🌱💚

I’m hoping you’ll do a video, I bet there’s a ton of folklore too... keep it up can’t wait to watch more!!! THANKYOU!
Will need to get your book. You can also make Hawthorn infused gin, a bit like sloe gin. In the past I have made it but much prefer sloe gin, the hawthorn gin is a nice talking point if you have people over for Christmas. You make it in a similar manner to sloe gin but with one major difference, with sloes they can infuse in the gin for a long period of time but with hawthorn don’t leave longer than 6 weeks as the berries start to disintegrate and you get a massive amount of sediment. You can also try a mixed sloe and hawthorn gin for something a bit unique.
Definitely going to give this a try thank you. Made the sauce last year and making again this year, daughter wants a little bit of a kick in with the sauce this time so going to experiment with a small quantity of it with some spice so wish me luck and will let you know how it turns out.
