Great video! I am Turkish and I like Irish history and Irish folk songs so much. And this song… such a beautiful. "'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar," This line always makes me cry. I think Turkish people and Irish people fought for their freedom with the same spirit. Greetings from Turkiye. Thanks for the video. Go raibh maith agat! ☘
Tom Barry is a grand hero.. glad to hear you mentioned him as one of the WwI soldiers who came back after the war to train soldiers in Ireland.. he was one of my Dads heroes .. The Foggy Dew is beautiful.. and your explanation of how it was written was appreciated.. Btw.. your new background.. with the sound of a stream singing in the background.. is beyond beautiful🌹☘️ Jen999💙

Davy, these clips are brilliantly informative; an Englishman, sure, but I am also a founder member of the "Dubliners Club" way back in the 60s- I have every one of their recordings, and often wanted more background detail for a number of their songs-you certainly have "come up with the goods"- keep them coming! Best regards, Roland Birchby
In Germany this is regarded a typical irish folk sing since the 70ies, made popular by The Dubliners. I just looked it up and well, happy to understand it eventually.
The "Foggy Dew" was written by Fr (later Canon) Charles O’Neill (1887-1963) from Portglenone, County Antrim, a priest of the Diocese of Down and Connor who was then a curate at St. Peter's Cathedral, Belfast, and later in life was parish priest of Kilcoo and later Newcastle, County Down. O'Neill was ordained in St. Patrick's College, Maynooth in 1912. The music is from a manuscript that was in possession of Kathleen Dallat, sister of Michael Dallat of Ballycastle. That manuscript gives Carl Hardebeck as the arranger. It is the same air as the traditional love song The Moorlough Shore. "The Foggy Dew" is a product of the political situation in Ireland in the aftermath of the Easter Rising and World War I.
Absolutely agree .. know its more difficult to manage .. but the videos you do ., especially the ones where you stand at the sites .. pull the viewers right back into the history., truly a memorable and surreal experience, this⚘☘
Love the fact that Charles was a native of my home county Antrim. Such a great detail in the lead up Davy really appreciate your hard work you put it to bring us this. Terrific as always ....your the man!! Go raibh maith agat 🇮🇪💚🍀✊
I have commented as an Englishman about these gems of information, keep making these clips, your history is important, don't let anyone edit, censor or rewrite your history. Finally, in these difficult times for lreland, keep fighting. don't let your government destroy your culture and identity.
As an Irish person, I hope you understand that the enemy is not immigrants, it is capitalism. Banks/cops/landlords are our problem, and the zoning laws they pass. i hope you are not encouraging the idea that immigrants and refugees are a threat to be feared or fought, in Ireland or anywhere else. Irish diaspora stands with all other diasporas and against all borders and other forms of fascism
Loved this. Just was listening to Sinéad O'Connor singing The Foggy Dew. Would like you to try to explain the early troubles that eventually led to Hunger Strike in Long Kesh. Sean South also deserves our undying respect and gratitude brother. Stay safe from County Antrim.
As always; Great Work Davy! Thanks again for another fantastic, Irish revolutionary history lesson! This is one my most favorite beautifully moving, Irish revolutionary songs! (This was one the first songs, I learned to play on the flute, too.) Thanks again for this great history lesson, Davy! I can't wait for your next Irish history lesson.
This is so beautiful to know. I hope I have not missed too much. I am in the hospital, but I made sure my phone went with me. Once I am back to work, I still want to get your book, I can hardly wait to read it. Thank you, Davy
I was born Mexican, but my heart is Irish! Erin go brag the San Patricios gallant men who gave their lives for Mexico! Their names are inscribed in gold in the Legislative Palace in CDMX next to the names of the founding fathers of Mexico. 🇲🇽 and 🇮🇪 forever friends!!!!!!!!
Easter 2024 so much has changed and so little. If we aren't all free no one is free. R.I.P. Fenians, the world shall never forget your courage against slavery. Could I have a prayer for my dear Mexico, whose people are extorted and pillaged by the narcos and corrupt?
Thank you Go raibh Maith agat, I was wondering about the tune A Nation Once Again juxtapositioned against A Soldiers Song and if they both qualify as National Anthems?

My 1st cousins the Harrington brothers. Played in Newfoundland for years. Made several albums. Monto on the rock Cape spear. One of them is Paul harrigton.
I grew up in that area. Most of us in that part are diaspora Irish many of whom " got lost" while fishing for british merchants on the Grand Banks . Many's a dory that found it's way through the fog to Newfoundland shores but couldn't find the way back to the ship 😂
I love your informative videos. I do wonder if there's information about the animals that served alongside our countrymen. In one of the photos shown in this video, there was a dog with the men. I'd love to know about any service animals (dogs, horses, mules, etc) that assisted our lads.
Thank you, Love! Question for you I learned that line as "their BONES we'd keep where the Fenians sleep" and I've seen in now as 'names' and here 'graves.' Are you aware of what the original said? I'm finicky about it because I believe bones are like hard drives and switching BONES with NAMES or, better GRAVES dilutes so much of the power of that line. Thank you! Love your channel!
My bloodline stems from catholic Irishmen who *voluntarily* fought for the Union Jack in the beginning of 1914, they then resided in England probably due to the 1916 rising. It’s crazy to think I would have an entirely different culture, identity and alignment had they simply stayed at home and instead committed to the revolution, the butterfly effect eh?
*I have a recording of the Irish tenor John McCormick singing "The Foggy Dew," but it was a romantic love song and had nothing to do with the Irish rebellion. Could someone please explain the reason that the same melody has two completely different lyrics?*
My grand mother lost two brothers to world war 1. these people were proud of the men who fought. she would say, do not stare at a poppy or you will go blind. they would turn their heads away.in shame of that flower. nobody remembered them as British soldiers, they were remembered as family who died fighting. and would turn in their grave to be remembered as British soldiers. Councils all over Ireland are sneaking in monuments shaming these boys memory's. i hope some day all these monuments to British soldiers are dug up and sent over to England. with the council men tied to them.
I don't really get it. They fought for Britain, fighting in British Uniforms but she doesn't want to remember them as soldiers serving Britain? Just as family who fought in ww1, but realistically, they did fight for Britain.
my grandmother said her father was killed in a London bar because he was catholic. This was WW1. he just came back from WW1.my great aunt never the liked British she spoke Gaelic first. She lost her stepfather for the same reason
