    he's gotten way better at balancing the vocals and drums in the decade since. saw them last year and he wasn't struggling for breath the whole time like he always seemed to be 10 years ago lol

      Mr N Sandman wish they still played that, along with Dead Womb and Do It! Oh well, new stuff is good though, I guess beggars can't be choosers :D

    • @bradlawrenceofficial
      @bradlawrenceofficial 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Eric Walker Seb can't sing Blood On Our Hands anymore, his voice is kinda ragged and he hasn't got the range to do it comfortably anymore. They still play Dead Womb and Do It! occasionally, just not very often.

      +Mr N Sandman Their only non-great songs, in my opinion, are Trainwreck and Virgins.

      Fair enough, I guess the whole vibe DFA have is that they're not perfect, they will make mistakes, either Jesse hits a few wrong notes, or Seb can't quite hit some notes here and there, but it's about the fun of the show, and hearing the music live, which is a pretty good vibe to go with.

      How can you expect a live show to sound like a recording man ? Your comment comes across as asinine. You can watch a lip sync at halftime Super Bowl if you like .

    guy does stunningly well on the mic given he's also covering the energizer bunny drumming

    • @jamesdevine02
      @jamesdevine02 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I love his voice here regardless of the drumming - so unique and full of character. But you're absolutely right: it takes a hell of a lot of co-ordination to not only maintain such ferocious energy on the drums and project your voice at all, but also stay in time, play the right beats, remember all the lyrics, create any semblance of a melody, and not pass out from the pressure of the crowd and trying to maintain breathing. And for an HOUR?! Seb's brain and body are a divine gift lmao.

    • @boyman7823
      @boyman7823 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Christian Almaguer I know it's a late reply but I hope it helps. He uses a chorus pedal to make the sound go between both of his amps, it's like creating two separate tremolos and making one amp get louder when the other amp is getting less loud. So when he gets close and gets that icky high pitch feedback we all hate, it does a kind of whirling siren sound.

    Wish I could have gotten a show like this. When I caught them in Vancouver around this time, January 2015 I believe, Sebby was so hammered he was practically falling off his stool and couldn't keep time for shit. And not like on the CBC demo from 2003, where the tempo changes add to the intensity. The songs were constantly on the brink of completely falling apart. Also, to describe his singing that night as "off-key" would be extremely generous. It was a mess. I was coming down from a speed binge, my girlfriend was pissed at me and I was pissed at the band. All in all, not a stellar night. Didn't expect them to last much longer after that, but thanks to TH-cam I now know my experience was an anomaly.

      ***** I think the sound here is just a matter of the stage mixing not being too great because on their albums they hit you with a thick wave of sound. As for the vocals, he's just really pushing himself to hit the notes and he starts to wear out his voice. A lot of their stuff requires a lot of energy to be put into the vocals, which when combined with drumming, makes it a lot more difficult.
      And idk, maybe it's just me but you really can't compare Royal Blood and their blues rock sound with DFA's dance-punk/noise rock sound; its two different realms

    Great performance, lots of guts, lots of balls. But man... I think they should maybe higher a drummer for live performances; It's just too hard on Sebastien. I know that's part of the magic of their live shows, but it'd be soooooo much cleaner if he could focus on singing.

      as you said, it would kill the magic of it all, only a drummer-singer can put all that energy in it. all they need is a better mic solution, cause the main problem is that the voice mic catches a lot of the drums along with the voice

    Love their albums but the moment they go on stage, both the drums and the vocals suffer. I get the whole duo/tandem power thing but it does not work for them anymore; specially in this type of venues. The drums are constantly rushing or dragging while the vocals are always in effort. It’s a shame they don’t realize that.

    • @comeaumatthew
      @comeaumatthew 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +nice cat If you've ever played guitar before, the pickups on electric ones, when brought near the amp generate feedback. Jesse (Bassist) has his setting configured in a way that keep that feedback compact and out of the way until he brings the pickups close to the amp. That's why you'll notice he runs over and is right next to the amp at the start of Turn it Out and Gemini. Fuckin love Gemini.

      Amp feedback, but his signal modulates back and forth between the cabs using a stereo chorus pedal. That makes that siren squeal, then I think he has a mild compressor to stop him blowing out the already overloaded speakers.
      I recommend watching his rig rundown sometime

    • @lollogaglia

      I get the point, but they're two completely different acts and genres. I like both of them, but DFA 1979 are much more raw and wild, maybe even more difficult to listen to, somehow.
      Royal Blood are good, but they're kind of "bland" compared to DFA 1979. I think it's because they're very clean, even if they have blasting sounds.
      Anyway I hope you'll get to see both of them playing live one day!

      RB might sound better live, but DFA are legendary because they were pioneers in the bass/drum duo thing. Also, they are bands from different generations, there's like a decade of distance between the two. It's like comparing Nirvana with Hüsker Dü.
