      @@RetroChristocream In the 2000s, Namco decided to release a Ms. Pac-Man anniversary cabinet out of either defiance or negligence to a previous understanding between Midway, Namco and General Computer Corp, the developers, who were supposed to retain royalties to the game in coin-operated arcade context. General Computer Corp sued as Namco did not give them any royalties. Namco owns the rights to the character and IP, but not the program if I recall correctly. In 2019 the royalty rights were transferred to ATGames in Hong Kong. Since then, Namco has tried to erase Ms. Pac Man, the game _and_ character, from history, replacing her with legally distinct looking characters. It's exhausting and complicated and I hate it.

    Your argument on how badly things have become at the company ended when you said that you would still be buying the cabinets. Otherwise why should they bother spending money to improve their product when you are willing to buy what is already out there?

Then, a few months later, they released a new one with a better monitor, the proper aspect ratio, CRT filters, and the ability to alter the difficulty without bricking the board. Yes there are a lot of gripes with A1Up. They haven't don't a spectacular job, but they're not offering full-size industrial releases. You know ahead of time it's IKEA packaged thin MDF. Certain things you talk about need research. Licensing is one of them. "Just put Ms Pac-Man on the same machine with Pac-Man". Bally and Namco have had a licensing rights issue for both of these games and one solution was they can never be combined on a single machine. Licensing for the other "where is" list of "I want these games", you'll never get them. Nintendo will NEVER license their IPs (like Donkey Kong) to A1Up. They will make something themselves first and only if THEY want to make it! Last, everyone shits on A1Up and even when they listen to the changes you request, they still get shit on. As you said, you're still going to buy A1Up even with ALL your gripes, so just don't gripe or make the changes/mods you want to make it better.

These things are meant to be small toys which is why I loved them cause they can fit in my house and easily be moved around. Surprised you didn’t know about the Ms. Pac-Man drama. Not even Namco can bundle it with Pac-Man. Also, the monitors ARE mounted vertically! You can’t source appropriate 4:3 monitors for these so they use 16:9 mounted vertically (9:16?) then shift and rotate the emulator output. For a game that was originally vertical they only need to shift it. Enlarging it to fill the screen would make it too large relative to the cabinet design so it gets matted in a virtual bezel instead.

    licensing costs money, all this is licensed product. Namco and Capcom are very expensive licenses, because they rather make money themselves on other platforms. The more games, the larger the license agreement...the more expensive the cabinet. You can't do much once a license runs out.

  • @Belgarathe
    @Belgarathe หลายเดือนก่อน

    I suspect the main issue is market saturation. There is only so many people who would want a cabinet in there home. So either they got full cabinet or a 1up. Once they got one the incentive to get another is much less vs upgrading their cabinet. The price point was a great deal for what you got but again it’s the amount of space these things took. It’s nice these were officially licensed products. But yea most demand drop once they have one at home and a lot of those that own one had buyers regret especially now you can get a handheld retro device under $50 that can plug into a tv and pair with a joystick like 8bitdo. This setup take less space, cost less, and you can play on the go.

    Out of curiosity is anyone running a small business using these or plan on playing competitively where quality buttons and joysticks are needed? I remember arcades back in the day and there were times both joysticks and buttons weren’t working correctly and we still pumped quarters into them for the experience. 1up is selling nostalgia that’s it, I own close to 30 of them and all of them still work just fine accept them for what they are and move on, if that’s not your gig feel free to buy a real arcade at 3k plus and good luck with the maintenance. I agree that 1up isn’t what they used to be but at the same time grateful for what they used to be.

    They need to focus on multicades like Arcade Legends ultimate. WITH good games on them. It's a really one off thing to have 1 tiny cheap arcade that plays like 3 games. If something's going to be in my room that's taking up huge amounts of space I don't want it to be loaded with 3 games lol

    • @cabbusses
      @cabbusses หลายเดือนก่อน

      People say this, but besides the AtGames cabinets Arcade1up would be competing with Chinese PBoxes that come pre-loaded with a triple digit amount of games that can be obtained dirt cheap. I don't think that's the direction A1up can go in because they simply can't compete with that.
      They were at their best when they were making cabinets that looked like 1:1 replicas. They should had been focusing on figuring out how to continue making those while maintaining the 300-dollar price tag, rather than weird gimmick cabinets, cheap plug-n-plays, or putting in "Live" features no one asked for and don't even work and raising the cabinet prices up to double what they were.

    • @TacticalDingus
      @TacticalDingus หลายเดือนก่อน

      @cabbusses true, or even make more quality products at more of a premium. There's a lot of people that would spend 600-700$ for a nicer built machine. Seems like arcades are like 300$ for junk or 2000$ for a custom built cab with nothing in between. The ALU is the closest thing but even that could use more power

    • @jupreindeer
      @jupreindeer หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always thought they should have gone for that Neo-Geo approach. By having internal cartridge ROM's that the user could build their own library off of that sold side-by-side with their dedicated machines. Invest $400 for the cabinet and computer package. Give the thing four or so cartridge slots. Then pay $100 for a cartridge with pre-installed games. Let the machine bank swap.
      By now, it's probably too late for such an idea. Or just do a blank cab with wireless and a huge SSD drive. Buy ROM's from an A-1Up digital shop.
      Or people will just pirate, regardless of a legal option like that.

    I was done when I bought the Best available Capcom and Midway Cabinets that, despite TMNT getting Online(after I already bought the one that didn't..) and NBA jam having online, didn't have online... They shortly after introduced those cabs with-out the annoying sunk in control deck, none paper looking light-up marquee, and more importantly the damn online.... The online should have been there and not heard foe a new release a few months later. If they had just offered retrofit kits for TMNT(this had sound issues and a score bug too), MK and SF, I could have let it go... but nope.... spend a 500 again and hope you can sell the last one for something approaching reasonably priced.

    100% right on needing more XLs (of just about every title). Unfortunately, we'll never have a Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man release on the same cab (that's a known licensing thing going back decades), and not A1U's fault. But to be sure, A1U has failed on just about every *other* level, particularly in the last year with the utter failure to release XLs in any quantity OR securing new titles. Giving their SvP of licensing the boot is proving to have been a big mistake.

    Re-releasing same titles was terrible, continuing to use monitors with bad viewing angles on some models (where were they even finding those in modern times?!?), adding dumb crap like fake coin doors and light up decks instead of focusing on better quality materials and controls, going nuts with their pricing, and lastly poor public representation/bad representatives, and oh yeah you reminded me, mixing horizontal and vertical games on the same cabs. The 2 player countercades with the mod and the awesome community image - now those are cool.

    There's also the fact that emulation of more complex hardware really shows the limits that Arcade1Up and Code Mystics can reach.
    The best they could do is Midway's custom "Killer Instinct" hardware as the emulation of those two games seem to be less flawed than the Xbox One ports of them, not to mention the custom screens and videos to replace any mention of Nintendo and Midway.
    But NFL Blitz, Goldeneye and Marvel vs. Capcom 2? Entirely different story. Framerate oddities, glitches not found in original hardware, and occasional freezing for MvC2? They're out of their league at this point.

    As a young kid back in the 70's who stood on top of a wooden box to reach the controls, these did not feel like the arcade experience. Booming speakers, massive screens (it was a long time ago), sound of coins clunking through the slot landing in the coin box those were the experience that was a consistent. Like the size of the machine, these were "arcade lite" How much would it really have cost to produce an arcade equivalent Speakers, Screen, and a coin box that made all the right sounds and just eject the coin 10P / 25¢ so you can have that nostalgia. Controls are a touchy subject (pun oh yeah) as you can get far better now for not that much. All I need at that point is the smell of stale cigarette smoke and burn/melt marks around the controls and screen (and dubious slippery stains on the floor) yes it would have been more than $300, make it a premium and sell it with a bag of chip and a pack of cookies.

I was a bit underwhelmed with the machine at first as it was so tiny even with the riser and the controlls especially the spinner was terrible, but I got the better spinner and swapped the buttons and it was ok. I then bought the nba jam cab as I knew it would be a good party title even though 4 toddlers couldn't play it at one time. After that I stopped caring about them as yes they started looking more like official arcades but the prices were getting up so high its like why bother for pay 749 for 1 cab that plays 8 games when I can buy a empty cab for 100, and a chinese board with controlls off Amazon for 180 and throw an old computer monitor for 15 build my own and play every title under the sun. Plus like you said we keep getting the same stuff, heres pac man, heres nba jam shaq edition, heres pac man plus, heres nba jam court editio, here wooden pac man, heres nba jam bleacher seat edition...

    I enjoyed Arcade 1up when it came out. It was exciting to own some of the games I'd grown up playing. Plus it's cool to show my kids the ways we used to have to play games. However, the company dropped the ball on their success. From affordable to overpriced very quick. I'm happy I have the SF2 cabinet, that was the big get, and I had one of them modded. At this point the cabinets are just a conversation piece as nothing new or exciting can be found. If my wife and I move, I doubt I'll bring them all with us. Maybe two. Also, I personally upgraded the controls on nearly all of them. While I didn't have an issue with the old controls, I upgraded out of curiosity and boy what a difference.
