  • The 2019 Subaru Forester is here and it is all new. Now sitting on Subaru's Global Platform with a revised exterior and interior. The Forester has many trim levels. Watch as I compare the Forester Premium to the Forester Sport. Does the Sport live up to it's name? You be the judge!

Hi Joe, many thanks for the thorough inciteful reviews on the Forester Brand, you have definitely influenced me, I'm waiting for the Labour Day sale, I decided on
the Forester Sport (Silver with package 2/premium audio) as I am approaching 62 years of age, this will give me easy access in and out, solid SUV all-around.

Bought the Sports a month ago and couldn't be happier.
We did add a bunch of packages. For example, my infotainment is actually bigger than the standard one. All weather, package, we have the crossbars on top, just little extra things that make it SO much better.
It was like $6k on add ons.
36k out the door, taxes registration and everything.
It has the Sports looks with the Touring feeling. 👌
    Great Review, subscribed

LOVE the Forester. I opted for the Limited this time around rather than the Sport. The Sport has a really great color blue available the Limited doesn't, the only real difference is that it has the ability to manually shift using paddles on the steering column. That just wasn't as important to me. I do love the orange accents on the body. They're a nice touch!

Actually the rear spoiler surround is a little different of the sport. It comes down around the rear window and adds a small lip over the badge on the rear tailgate. I really like the Forester Sport. Currently drive a MK7 GTI and seriously considering the Sport as a replacement vehicle. As always. Great job guys.

Yeah, I really hope they are preparing STI version of Forester and that's why we don't get turbo right away. Not every family vehicle needs to be fast but around 10 sec to 60 is really slow. Add few passengers and some cargo and that Forester is pretty dead in traffic.

Late to the party, but love your reviews Joe. I haven’t bought a car in a long time, but my GF and I are ready. It was between the CX-5 and the Forester, but for an older guy like me blind spots on the CX were just too much to overcome. And the Forester to me has a smoother ride. Also CX has harder to use infotainment, and we like the way the Forester console lights up the cabin so to speak. Waiting for a Sport just like one in your vid with right price. All black with detailing makes the boxier look seem more like chillin SUV. I’ll probably get a zonk for using chillin 😎 but what the hell. Thanks again Joe very helpful.

Do have the black sport 2019 model with the orange trim, one good thing is easy to find the Forester Sport in a crowded parking lot, the orange on the roof rails stand out. No complaints yet at all in driving it 2500 miles, the pickup while not blazing fast like a turbo or V6 seems to be pretty good no complaints there.

I'm in the same thought group as you, I shake my head when I look at trim levels of Subaru. I'm like, why the hell do I have to buy a high end Forester just to get Fog Lamps, I live in the Country/Rural area of Florida and Fog Lamps or Driving Lamps are exceedingly important but I'm not spending 5-8 thousand more on a truck/SUV to get Fog Lamps. Heck I can go to local 4WD/Off road truck store and spend a couple hundred bucks and get Fog Lamps/Driving Lamps installed. As you did, so did I, I purchased a base trim level with Alloy Package and All Weather Package on my 2018 Forester because I didn't want all the bells and whistles.

I feel the back seats should be like the older Forester XT, they have a automatic button towards the trunk of the car so you dont have to lean over everything inside the back just to put the rear seats down. I agree the trunk space should definitely come stock with the rear seat back protectors as well as the rear all weather floor mat.

An XT sport would have been amazing but Im in love with the sport and plan on buying one myself in the Dark Grey Metallic with the fully loaded package with the bigger multimedia screen, auto rear gate and Harmon Kardon. My concern with dropping the 2.0T into it would be, what would the price difference have been with it? Unfortunately Subaru shot themselves in the foot with the FXT in the last generation by making a highly decontented premium version and didn't allow for any option packages then skipping to a touring trim for it with a rather hefty price jump. Top that with Subaru still not being able to get their 2.0T to comfortably take regular gas. Maybe once the 2.4T gets some traction, they'll drop it into the Forester, since we all know it's replacing the H6 in the next Legacy/Outback redesign; It has to.
The only way I could have seen the XT model working out is if Subaru did the 2.5 as the only option for the base model, offering it as an option on the Premium, then making it standard in the sport thru touring models. My lease on my 16 Legacy is up in a few short months, and I am getting a Forester Sport as well; Probably in the blue, and it can't come a day too soon. Love my Legacy, but I miss sitting up high, and can finally get what I want without jumping to the Limited trim for anything. I don't want full leather, but LED headlights, eyesight, and Harman Kardon are requirements for me. I HATE the leather in my Legacy.

The 2.4 turbo in the Forester would be fantastic and we'd be a buyer. It would appeal to both types of buyers: those that want a Sport model with the extra performance to truly be called SPORT and those of us that would buy an upper trim, Touring or Limited trim and want a stronger engine to feel safer in emergency situations or when traveling fully loaded and climbing hills. My fear is that Subaru will keep the Forester limited to the base engine only to sell more Ascents and Outbacks; then 3 to 4 years from now, they will finally offer it to boost the then older-looking Forester's sagging sales. With a buying window of just the next 2 years, I can't wait till then.

I was compare shopping these two in 2021 and they shuffle the features a bit. The biggest difference is the dual x-mode but even living in the northeast I don't think I'll be needing it. I opted for the premium with blind spot monitoring and power liftgate . the price is actually a tad less for the sport but I can't handle the orange vent surround. Plus I think the 17" tires will ride a bit softer for my aging tush and a bit less expensive when it comes to replace the tires.

A couple things you missed. The foglights are specific to the Sport trim, all other trims that offer them are standard round units, the mirrors differ, Sport gets you integrated turnsignals into the mirrors. As for the hatch, the Premium will always be full body color, whereas the Sport will always have a gloss black trim piece below the rear window. Going back to the fog lights though, Subaru wires their cars the same across trims, so the cars are foglight ready, you can always upgrade if you choose.
I have to Zonk the Forester on dropping the gas struts for the hood. I can deal with the CVT and lack of Turbo, because I wouldn't have gotten the 2.0T or Manual anyway. My interior zonks go right to the HVAC and seat heat controls. They should have better integrated the HVAC controls into the center stack, and done similar to what is in the Legacy/Outback, including putting the seat heat controls there as well to a: free up space on the center console, and b: make it less likely to bump the seat heat control and not know it. Not sure what they could have put in that spot instead, but at least then you won't drop something and roast your ass in the middle of the summer. The final things I would have liked to have seen come from models outside of the US where Subaru has surround and curb view cameras, and drop the piano black around the stereo... it's just going to cause glare and collect a bunch of micro scratches.

Ryan Slemmer who drops things on their center console? I have no problem with the placement of the heated seat controls or the HVAC system. Subaru could stand to update their buttons for seat heaters but it’s not a big deal. As for the hood what are you doing under the hood? I’ve had my hood open maybe once so far to add washer fluid I can’t see this being an issue for 99% of people unless maybe you’re a Subaru Service Tech or something.

    • @717dash_cam
      @717dash_cam 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JL-ek2ks Look where the switches are at, they're asking for a phone or cup to be set on it while trying to put something back while driving. I have a 16 legacy and previously a 15 Fusion. In the 15 fusion, I put my cup on the passenger side so it's out of my way; Especially if I had a taller cup and my 16 Legacy they're on the passenger side as well. At least when Subaru did the scroll wheel for the controls you really couldn't just bump it. Aesthetically it looks stupid too, especially when you look at how they and other manufacturers have put the controls with the HVAC controls. As I also mentioned, it would free up space for something else. I wouldn't mind a little nook or cubby like in my legacy so I can put gum or cough drop wrappers, used lens wipes etc until I go to park my car. Seriously, look at the Legacy/Outback controls and compare them to the rest, and tell me which looks better integrated into the car.
As for the struts, it's cheaping out not to put them in; Especially when you had them on the previous generation. It's nice that it just goes up when you open it. I do my own washer fluid, air filters, and actually check my car. It's nice so you don't have to put down the jug of washer fluid or your filters to prop it up. Obviously noticeable cost cuts are annoying.
If you scroll through other comments you'll see it's a gripe among others too. Would I expect it on an Impreza, no. On basically the rest of the line up, yes. BRZ and WRX buyers are usually enthusiasts who like to tinker and mod and I would expect it there. The rest of the line up, you're in the mid to high 20s - 40s depending on what you get, so yes I expect it there as well.

Test driving a Forester this weekend. Looks like the Forester Sport, which I like, really isn't that much different from the premium. They basically added the color trim, which I like on the white, and increased the price. I may just go for the premium and save my money. Overall, my Rogue still has more room on the inside.

I bought my 19 Forester Touring on 12/11/22 with only 4,700 miles. It’s Sephia Bronze with Brown leather interior. It’s gorgeous.
    It’s a Certified Subaru so I got a 7 year 100K mileage warranty.
The previous owner put Michelin Cross Climate tires on. They’re Great in all road conditions. Next month we’re having them installed on my wife’s 19 Outback.
I’m an old duffer so I baby my vehicles. My Forester will probably be the last vehicle I’ll ever own.
My wife’s Outback is her commuter car, so she’ll probably have to buy another Outback before she dies, (she’s younger than I am).
Both of my brother and sisters in law only drive Outback’s for their daily commuter vehicles.
One of my sisters in law drives 500 miles a week, 52K miles a year. They keep their Outback’s for about 6 years or so and buy another one.
We’re hoping to get 250-300K miles out of our current 19 Outback.
Subaru’s feel very planted to the ground and superb traction in all driving conditions.
    I can’t say that we’ve owned a better vehicle.
I drove Toyota’s for 40+ years before buying my wife her Outback last year for her birthday.
If Subaru holds up as well as our Toyota’s, we’ll never go back to Toyota again.

For those complaining about turbo- yes it would be nice but if you're looking for that, then why are you looking at a forester?? Subaru performance has nothing to do with horse power and everything to do with functionality. The sport achieves that with flying colors...laced with orange

    the hood prop in 2019
I def wished the Sports has the 2L Turbo engine instead of the 2.5L NA engine
the DCT will make the difference in terms of the acceleration of the car combine with the turbo flat 4 engine
One thing i will also zonk on the Sports is the brake calipers could be painted black or some darker color
def agree the cloth cover on the door, it will get quite dirty easily since you will prob use that area to grab the door.
    nice comparison video

The Sport can now be ordered with the optional 8 inch touchscreen and Harman Kardon stereo. The 8 inch screen is an available package upgrade and agreed it looks a lot better than the smaller screen with the large bezel. Also the cargo tray is standard according to the build tool on Subaru.com. I didn't like the orange highlights on the Sport trim at first either. But it has grown on me as it offers something different. Much nicer looking than the Premium. The orange trim around the shifter looks better than the silver trim on the Premium. I wish that Subaru included the memory seats and buttons in the rear hatch area to fold down the 2nd row. The Honda CR-V in the EX-L trim comes standard with leather, memory driver's seat, and handles to fold down the rear seats. Hmm. It's a significant omission as the CR-V EX-L and Forester Sport are evenly priced. I can understand not including the leather since Subaru held that back for the Touring but the memory seats and buttons to fold the seats wouldn't cost much to include and would make the Forester more competitive against the CR-V.

I'm going to be honest. I test drove a rav4 adventure and then went to drive the forester sport with lower expectations. I was definitely pleasantly surprised.
The forester feels like a much more refined ride experience compared to the rav4 adventure. The biggest gripe I have is that the towing capacity of the forester is significantly lower. Why only 1.5k lbs? What makes the outback much more? The rav4 adventure also has 3.5k lb towing capacity.

The CVT transmission is not made for powerful engines or a lot of stress or torque - they are for controlled and low stress driving (for example a CVT does not have a large first gear) - if subarus stuck with the 6 speed gear box - this would lieterlaly be a flawless vehicle - for plain driving CVT will do OK though, no one knows if they will have issues afte 7-8 years as they are more complex and have more moving parts

That sport model looked great...till you mentioned the engine then you lost me. When something like the Rav4 offers more hp with better fuel economy and awd. Subaru really needs to step up their game if they want to try to convert people. Especially on a so called sport edition. Shame...it did look good.

While some may disagree, Subaru has some solid Automatic/Triptronic tranny's. Should be an option, for Triptronic or CVT if not a manual and NEEDS, a turbo for the sport badge. All in all tho, Do like the look of it and I absolutely HATE the foresters looks.

I wish that Subaru made the Forester to look like the Sport without accent strip at the base level, I love all the black trim and wheels and cannot figure out why they think that polished come or satin silver costs less than gloss black trim. Why the hell are they charging more for gloss /satin black trim, it doesn't cost more than chrome or satin silver? Subaru, make your base model with black out look like the sport but without the accent orange all over the place! The sport should be a turbo charged 2.5 with manual Trans option, manufacturers need to stop reducing the size of engines when placing a turbo on them. That's why people are not buying turbo models!
