Dear Dr Dray. Could you please show us how to read the ingredients of skin care products (body lotions, sunscreens, and even shampoo and hair conditioner) to identify those that are or are not comedogenic? I've found that using certain hair conditioners cause me more pimples on my back; however, I do not know how to identify products that are non-comedogenic unless it is explictly indicated in the label of the product (which is VERY rare). Excellent, informative video. Thank you.

The hyper pigmentation is actually healed spots from scarring, so if you scar further they'll get worse.

Hi Dr. Dray. As an epidemiologist and skincare junkie, I have to say I much appreciate your evidence based approach to skin care. I have a question about waiting times when putting on forms of Vitamin A. My tretinoin requires me to put it on a freshly cleansed face and wait until it is completely dry before putting it on (the instructions say 20 min). I've also seen other people (not medical scientists) say they wait at least a half hour after adding actives (like Vitamin A, AHAs, BHAs, etc.) before layering on moisturizers or other hydrators. To you knowledge is there any evidence on the efficacy of waiting times, before and after actives? I notice you also put Adapalene on after a hydrator, is it not necessary to put it on dry, clean skin like Tretinoin? Your advice is greatly appreciated. Have a nice Friday :)
Thanks! I would layer nothing on top of tretinoin. All the other stuff you mention, aside from moisturizer, is just filler that has the potential to impact the efficacy of the tretinoin. I put moisturizer on to a wet face after getting out of the shower at night and/or washing off makeup/sunscreen. I allow the moisturizer to dry so the skin is not wet, then apply my topical retinoid.
ROXANNE BEAUCLAIR - hi. I use tretinoin daily at night. I use Neutrogena hydroboost gel creme on damp skin, wait for it to dry a little and then use tretinoin.
ROXANNE BEAUCLAIR I've been putting on moisturizer first, on wet skin, then once it dries applying tretinoin. I have found this method to be more effective than applying it on dry skin. It also eliminated most of my flaking. I've also had better results since I've quit using serums and AHA's and BHA's. I changed things up since watching Dr Dray and it's been really effective.
I have acne/dark spots everywhere face, back, butt, and legs 😭😢 and i only just turned 14 😞 i lose confidence and i have to cover my body by not wearing shorts above the knee and not wearing any off the shoulder shirts...plz help

I know it’s an embarrassing thing to talk about, but since you are young if you are able to talk to your parents and see if they will book you a GP appointment. They will definitely be able to help, they will try many things until you see some progress. With a matter of time, you will hopefully see a difference with the treatments they provide for you. Sometimes this is due to puberty because remember you are still young and your growing, hormones and all. You can probably use any lotion but from my experience, i've learned that some lotions actually make me break out, so I stick to vaseline instead.
I’ve tried prescriptions for acne before and it actually made it incredibly worse. I used a natural root & plant medication to cleanse myself from the inside to calm it down after i stopped
what medication was this?
Lea Robinson The supplement is called Bell Clear Skin 60 Caps. I swear by it.
Thank you.
Dr dray I’ve been following you since the beginning and absolutely adore you and how far your channel has come. You’re an absolutely incredible person and I am beyond grateful for you… someone I don’t even know. ❤
Can you give us more options on bacne products? The panoxyl just made everything worse for me
What about when the Benzoil dries your skin out too much what moisturizer would you recommmend for oily skin
I had bacne before and today its only dark spots. How to get rid of them exactly?
Exfoliate
@@jaxgoblin6786 I´ve suffered with dark spots in my back for years!!! But then I saw my brother succesfully hiding his spots with a good tan... lol I've wasted so many years.... My skin is brown, latin.
Héctor Fernández ahhh yes darker tones have higher levels of hyper pigmentation. Look into such witch hazel and natural black soap (that you combine with water). The trick here is DO NOT RUB HARD! The hyper pigmentation is actually healed spots from scarring, so if you scar further they'll get worse.
Art Vein Is there anything I can do for really light skin? I don’t want to get a tan, I try to Tay as light as possible (I’m not racistlol). I have still active bacne but there are so many scars I just don’t know what to do.
Maybe use tamanu oil to remove dark spots
She seems so much happier in her older videos. Anyone else notice that?
She smiles more in the old videos. And is more animated altogether. Not sure why.
Wow! Talk about a super comprehensive video on back acne! What a wonderful service you're providing, doc! Thanks again for your time and help for so many of us! Rita
Thanks so much Ms Rita! hope u are having a great day :)
Hi Dr.
Great video dr dray . What is a good basic body soap that is not for acne ? Just a good all round fragrance free soap ?

Dr Dray thank you so much for always responding
Can I use that one on my face too?

I have acne/dark spots everywhere face, back, butt, and legs 😭😢 and i only just turned 14 😞 i lose confidence and i have to cover my body by not wearing shorts above the knee and not wearing any off the shoulder shirts...plz help
Awww sis I feel you I’m 18 and I’ve been struggling with the same thing for a year now. It may go away by itself and I know it’s tempting but do not touch it please it can lead to scars. I hope all the best for you and don’t worry we are not alone, THIS IS NORMAL ❤️❤️
girl im 16 and had it for like 5 years, no product ever worked and it got worse ever year
It hurts me I Cant wear any good clothes
@@saloni22815 don't be down on yourself! I'm 27 and still get breakouts from time to time. It's very common! Make sure all your conditioner is rinsed off your back when you shower, and use a unscented body washes. Many scented body washes give me breakouts
I used to have this for 7 years. Then scaring and occasional for another 1 1/2. It was long term fungal acne. I: drank lots of water, changed my eating habits (a little, I stopped eating too much oil and sugar and substitute healthy foods like yogurt, baked fish and brown rice), was prescribed Nizoral medication for a good length of time, and I used Panoxyl 10% as a body wash. After most of it went away I lazered to remove body hair that will irritate my skin then use a good scar cream to treat left over dark spots.
I’ve had bacne for as long as I can remember, but never got it checked out
Please can you do an update video or update the links since they are not working. Thank you.
Hi Dr Dray,
Do you think is necessary to moisturize the area with back acne? If yes in which way? You are absolutely amazing!🙏thanks for your videos
Yes! I always think this!
Yes... i want to know how to moisturize the back. Is there a specific instrument that i can buy from a drug store? I’ve never seen one.
Wendy Berger watch the info box! she recommends a « back lotion apllicator »
Ive had back acne since i was 11 and now im 17 and i haven’t seen my back without acne since i was 11.
Kaitlyn B exactly the same here. 17 now and im just sitting here like why cant i have clear skin.
Kaitlyn B same except I’m 15, I’m going to see a dermatologist soon so I can get that sorted- I’ve got my fingers crossed for relatively quick results as I’ve got my school prom next year and I want to go dress shopping with a bit of dignity!!

I've been getting back acne since I was 11. Not much works except sunlight and scrubbing my skin 2 times a day.
This was very helpful. I just discovered that my 16 year old son has terrible acne all over his back, chest and shoulders and I am hoping that these tips will help. If not, we will go straight to the dermatologist.
update?
Hey everyone, with just doing laundry much more often and using the body clear by neutrogena mine has calmed down a whole lot.
Back acne is so annoying it itches and sometimes I feel like my skin is inflamed or on fire!
if it itches, it's probably fungal acne. Normal acne doesn't itchy.

Hi Dr Dray, thanks for your informative video! I was looking up the PanOxyl wash on Target, and saw reviews that the formula has recently changed and is not as effective as it used to be. Would you recommend other washes for back and chest acne?
yes
I agree started using again a few months ago to get bacne under control again seems not as effective as before. Can you share the alternative?
@yc
Great video! Maybe you could one about using oils. There are so many and the prices vary too. I've been thinking about buying a vitamin E oil or jojoba oil for the body but I'm not sure if it'd be worth it. Thanks !
Thanks Ms Claudia!
I actually ruined many shirts when I was using a benzoyl peroxide wash. After using it for a couple of weeks I noticed the majority of my shirts were slowly being bleached. I was so upset. I'm currently using the Shea Moisture body wash for troubled skin and it seems to be working. I'm in my mid-30's and I've been struggling with bacne since I was 10. It has ebbed and flowed, but seems to be picking back up lately. It's super frustrating, especially when it's summer and you want to wear some looser clothing and strappy dresses.
I started applying hibiclens to my face to get rid of bacterial acne after using a mild face wash. So far it seems to be working.
Yup definitely been wasting money trying to treat my acne and seborrhea dermatitis. Finally going to a dermatologist. Listen to Dr. Dray please
Can you use salicylic acid cleansers, the same as we use on our faces?Excellent video, as always! Thank you!
you can and thanks!

Thank you for the great video! I have one question left about this topic, do I need an oil free body moisturizer ? while one is recommended? Tnx!
Hey! I've slowly been watching your videos over the past few days. I'm male, but still self conscious of my skin, especially as I'm getting into my late 20s. I'm in my first year of medical school (took a few years off) in Philadelphia. Just wanted to say I think you make great content. Keep it up!
Thanks for watching!

Dr Dray. My son is 38 years old and still has back acne. When he was younger he was on Accutane twice. The current dermatologist would like him to start up Accutane again. It really affected him in terrible side effects. He currently uses Brevoxyl body wash along with a soft back brush. It is helping. Can he also use salytic acid on his back afterwards? Sometimes the Brevoxyl bleaches clothing.
Can you make a video on hair fallout and products that can help with this issue ?
no products help telogen effluvium
Dr Dray what about Rogaine? Would you recommend that?
Castor oil helps with growth of hair
Very interesting as I thought that going in the tanning bed or getting some sun on my acne prone areas dried out the acne and improved the appearance
Hi Dr Dray. Could you please tell me what do you think about “Paula’s choice”products?
Is it ok to use PanOxyl acne foaming wash and differin gel at the same time?

Mitchell Rosa did it work?
I’ve had major body acne and scarring on my back, shoulders, chest, and butt since I was 15 and I’m 21 now. I’ve tried anything and everything under the sun to clear it up. I really want to wear cute tank tops and strappy dresses during the summer but I’m too insecure to do it. I’m hoping it’s hormonal and that it will clear up soon. I’m so done stressing about it all the time :(
Have you tried hyperpigmentation products like aha or bha?
@@sukanyaclarke3838 yes I have. They help a little bit with old scars but I still have so much new acne that it’s not making much of an overall difference in that department
@@katiekrull2521 aw im sorry. Maybe you can try a product that prevent hyperpigmentation like Kojic acid. It prevents melanin from forming in the presence of wounds like acne
Differin definitely made a difference after two months of use! And showering immediately after working out.
What would we do without you Dr. Dray?!? Thank you for these videos.
Currently doing a skin fast on my back and body due to using neutrogena body scrub for over a year. It caused hives and rashes and I didn’t realize it was because of that. So I stopped using that but need to repair skin barrier since my skin is not too sensitive.
I got left over blemishes from backne that are dark af and never go away. I tried everything and now I give up and just gonna get a massive back tattoo to hide it

Has her hair grown so much in three years?! wow
It is annoying that SO many back cleaning tools are rough loofah-type scrubbers. I wish they would make more soft spongey products. Thank you for your help and info. Have a nice weekend, Dr.. :)

This has helped me learn more about back acne and how to solve it. I have been working out a lot and am not trying to keep getting more and more as I workout
Hi Dr. Dray! I keep reading that benzoyl peroxide (as well as SA) should not be combined with retinoids (like adapalene) because they will deactivate one another? "BPO and retinoids should not be used together because they will deactivate each other and make the retinoid ineffective." - Dr. Elizabeth Houshmand
Can you confirm that thoroughly rinsing off the BPO cleanser prior to applying the adapalene 0.1% will prevent the 2 from counteracting each other? TIA! Just want to make sure I don't waste my products when I get them and get the full effect of both ingredients :)
Thank you for the back lotion applicator link. Another fantastic, informative video. Thank you!
Love those thing!
Do you recommend using Clyndamicin or Chlorophenicol lotion to clean the back acne?
Benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid body wash. And what about scars from it?
I’ve been using adapalen on my face for almost a year and my skin is perfect, but I have body acne and I was using azelaic acid and it didn’t really work and my derm was like “you should try accutane” and as someone with anxiety I don’t want to mess with that, but I’m really think about using adapalen on my body I hope it works!
Dr.Dray, do you have recommended body location for backacne?
u look exactly like natalia dyer.. like EXACLTY
Wow, very informative video. I'm especially glad to hear that I've always been right in ignoring the '30 second' application instruction on my Benzoyl Peroxide and always leave it on for a good 5 - 10 minutes before rinsing so that it actually has time to do something.
I never had serious back or chest acne before quarantine :(

Dr. Dray, what body moisturizer can you recommend for dry back with back acne that won't exaxerbate back acne?
cerave
Dr Dray cerave dry skin mosturizer?
I have hormonal acne and sensitive skin with rosacea, could you please do a video on people with this issue? The recommended products in this post are too harsh on my skin, benzoyl peroxide causes allergic reactions on my skin type. Ive had good results with Cerave's wash that contains hyaluronic acid, ceramides and salicylic acid on my bacne.. everything esle is way too irritating.
Thank you for sharing. Please, what are your thoughts about African Black soap?
Thanks! African black soap is made from oils and ashes of agro wastes (derived from cocoa, palmfruits, ground nuts, & sorghum), as well as vegetable oils like shea butter and palm oil. It has a very alkaline pH. Despite enthusiasm for this soap, there are no scientific studies to support or refute its efficacy for any dermatologic condition
Will salicylic acid body was be helpful as well?
Yesss, of course
Panoxly, gave me more pimples! I need something for the few pimples I have on my back. Nothing works and everything gave me more back acne.
Me too! It also made the existing ones painful and angry 😔

Any tips on getting rid of the scars left by back acne?
acne scars won't go away with anything you can buy in the store...they require interventions , depending on the type of scar (i have an acne scar Q&A that goes in to detail)
Aloe Vera they do go away. It took my son exactly 9 months
@@julieete257 aloe vera saved my skin, i used to buy the huge natural leaf and but some on everyday, it even helped me to stop breaking out as well as heal faster and heal old scars
Christian Briesmaster it works it takes long but it works. Dermatologist don’t believe in that they want you to buy their products.
@@julieete257 yea but i think they are also just never taught in medical school about natural remedies or any remedies outside of the western scientific based medicine. A great video as always. The thing is my acne is all over my chest and shoulders and the whole back. So using actives like niacinimide or salicylic acid or even a retenoid like tret basically means I have to use so much product and it’s expensive. Is there any other way to go around this. Thank you

How many times a week should you use benzoyl peroxide wash on face and body?
Hi! Do you have any recommendations for scars left on the back due to acne?
Hello Dr Dray, Your channel is really resourceful!
I would like to know what would be similar products for acne in Europe? Some of the products indicated here in your channel (10% benzoyl peroxide and Retin A) are actually banned on this side of the world. :(
Thank you!
What do you think of Murad clarifying cleanser? It's helped my face so much, makes me wonder if I should try it on my back and arms
Have you guys tried sulfur soap? I'm trying this for a week now. I plan to try it for about 2-3 months. I hope it works.
I had bacne since i was 15 and figured out majority of the acne was due to my Old Spice soaps and Axe soaps. For some reason it only occurred on my back and not the rest of my body.
Starting using more natural soaps and sometime Dove and it definitely changed the quantity of bacne.
Any body lotions that wont clog pores? Cerave has comedogenic ingredients only one I ve found so far that is 100% fine is the paulas choice BHA and 70% the ceraphil lotion let me know xx thank you in advance
Hi I've been using 10% benzoyl peroxide on my back every day, but each time I do (as well as throughout the night/day) I get super itchy all over my back, even though I moisturize. Does this mean I need to use a lower percent? Or is this a good thing? I inevitably scratch a little because it's unbearable, and I worry that's undoing the benefits of the benzoyl peroxide.
Thanks!!
