X-Men '97 "Motendo" - On her birthday, a nostalgic Jubilee is forced to relive the X-Men's greatest adventures when an entertainment system takes her inside of a retro sixteen-bit video game.
X-Men '97 "Remember It" - As Genosha prepares to join the UN, selected members of the team head to the island to become honorary members. Back at the mansion, a behind-the-scenes press event threatens to hang out the X-Men's dirty laundry.

That performance hurt almost as much as the chaos.

Forget about Gambit and Magneto for a second, Leech was the darkest loss here, an innocent child who always had it bad FINALLY was getting a good/happy/normal childhood, just for all of it to go worse than any of his past life and end disastrously. He embodied the emotional roller coaster of the episode, I had tears of joy seeing him so happy with other mutants like him going to school and having fun, being excited by the X-Jet, etc.
He cannot get a break.

Gambit surpassed the drama tropes I was worried they were gonna do by just accepting Rogues choice like a man and saying they would be friends. After episode 2 when he caught her leaving Magnetos room I was VERY worried they would ruin my favorite character by making him do something stupid out of jealousy and instead he just acts like a genuine rational adult and still gives his life to save the woman he loves. Gambit is MVP of this entire series hands down.
Magnetos final words being "do not be afraid" in german to Leech after his holocaust flashback was hard hitting as hell too.
I love how they've been showcasing the abilities of the main characters, they've all been getting moments to shine. But the way Magneto and Gambit go out, omfg, they're showing real love to these characters. I was in tears damn near that whole episode, and in shock by the end.
I was never worried, Gambit’s always been too cool for immaturity, and too confident from past history to get tripped up. He also cared more for Rogue’s overall well being than himself, you see this when he’s talking to Nightcrawler, he’s had a life while Rogue hasn’t, he kinda saw Magneto as a type of karma.

That’s what hurt the most and was the darkest aspect to all this, going from him having a good childhood in the beginning to that ending, he more than anyone makes me feel an oncoming reversal is inevitable.
This show has made me so emotional about Storm and Gambit. But they did a great job with this show.

"E is for Extinction" is one of my favorite X-Men storylines, I could never have IMAGINED a Disney+ X-Men cartoon would just flat-out go there. Saw it was set on Genosha? "Nah, they're not going there." Saw the Watcher in the sky? "Noooooo, surely not!" CABLE SHOWS UP! UH OH! They're GOING THERE!
Had to pick my jaw up off the floor after the credits rolled.

It’s was definitely a rough watch. I think the season 1 finale of Invincible still has it beat in terms of trauma inducing animated slaughters. It took me days to recover from that one.

Can I just say, the Nightcrawler animation in episode 5 was amazing. His energy, his bamfing, the smoke clouds! All spot on. I hope there is more of him going forward (and I think there is given ep 6's opening credits now)

Ever since Shredder’s Revenge came out I’ve wanted the studio who made that to do an X-Men game. Motendo just made me want it even more
the creators said x-men 97 is in 2 halves, likening it to 9/11 so it's nice the first half of the series and the last half shit gets real.

Episode 4 was basically the show's way of saying goodbye to its saturday morning cartoon roots before we get to the emotional roller coaster of ep 5 😢

The original Va of Jubilee was ask to be Jubilee again, but she really wanted an Asian Voice actor to take the role over. She stated they were kinda mad about her not coming back. But I'm glad she decided to play old Jubilee. That is so freaking cool.
The sound editing in 5 was amazing with the sound dropping out with the nosebleed

This show is life to me!
Top three moments of shock and sadness in entertainment according to me:
1. Death of Optimus Prime in Transformers the Movie. Every 80s boy has PTSD from that particular moment.
2. Death of the Ant in Honey I Shrunk the Kid. I cried during that scene and I'm not ashamed, no matter how old I was.
3. Gambit's death in X-Men '97. While there have been plenty of moments of "going out like a G" (Creese in "Man on Fire" is #4 on my list), this just hits SO HARD after all of the happy build up that you CAN'T forget it.

The "emotional trauma and nostalgia, sounds like me" line just gave me the darkest realization of "love you like a play cousin"...
(Those "play cousins", that's the nostalgic youth for real... but what happened to those cousins today? Are they no longer around? That takes that line and makes it deep... makes it dark... like now it's saying "I love you like family, like kinfolk, like we are there for each other. because all this is temporary/, we only have those simple times for so long so enjoy them") I feel like I am creating my own Black Nerd Comedy Livejournal creepy pasta at this point... Maybe it's just that episode. It was kind of traumatic, they really captured the feeling watching of a terrorist attack.

Man, I had the big spoilers for episode 5, but then Magneto said “habe keine angst," to Leech and it KILLED me.
Also I gotta say: I hate how anything that doesn't go at full pace and in a direct line from A to Z is called 'filler'. Sometimes, that's where the world is fleshed out. Sometimes it helps with the overall pacing. Sometimes it's just fun. In the case of episode 4, we got a breath of relative calm before the fury and chaos of 5. Stories are made of more than just serving up plot as rapidly as possible.
The Motendo episode was basically like "Endless nostalgia is not great, actually" and then episode 5 is like "We're gonna make some BIG changes to this nostalgic cartoon revival..."
For real!
Episodes 2 and 3 were already pushing past nostalgia, but at the same time the original show was fondly known for being real and having adult storytelling, it wouldn’t had been revived to begin with if it was just disposable kids entertainment, they just knew they can really double down on it now, actually show Holocaust flashbacks instead of talking around it, etc.
Heck even Gyrich’s racism in episode 1 was a warning for episode 5, and the last three episodes are named after his cold line. The last 3 episodes should premiere in theaters cause it’s probably gonna be the event of a lifetime.

Great commentary Andre! I felt the same way! From the dialogues to the Easter eggs like the Days of Future's Past most wanted poster to the Watcher were awesome! And of course the amazing drama and action were top notch! X-Men 97 is putting on a master class for other writers to follow!

Excellent review of episodes 4 & 5, as usual! One parallel I noticed is that the story of Leech being hunted and rescued happened in both X-Men ‘92 and X-Men ‘97, episode 5. In the original, he ran to the Murdock in the subway, and they protected him. Later in the episode, Storm promises a safe haven for the Murlocks at the mansion.
In ‘97, while in hiding, Leech mentions that Magneto promised that he would never be scared again. Then, while looking Leech in the eye, Magneto’s final words were, “Habe keine Angst.” German for Don’t be afraid. It is so heartbreaking.
In a final parallel, Biblical reference, Magneto sacrifices himself for his fellow mutants. John 15:13. I think Magneto has completed his redemption arc and is a hero, albeit with anti-hero qualities, but a hero nonetheless.

i never thought i'd see the Genosha massacre portrayed in film or tv but it happened!
Episode 5 was absolutely the most intense episode of the season so far...and that's before the attack in Genosha.

This episode was just glorious, really keeping to the spirit of X-Men soap opera drama, and then bringing the reality with tragedies striking like this.

One thing I love about this new show is how they change the intro to fit the roster. So when Magneto joins the X-Men he gets a title card. And ep 6, Gambit DOESN'T have a title card. It's just a really nice touch.

Episode 5 was so emotional, they did such a masterful job! One of the best episodes of television I have seen in a long time.

X-Men 97 has been a blast! Part of the fun from my perspective comes from reading all of Lenore's commentary when she shows up on my FB news feed. She is so passionate about being Rogue and that really shows with how she talks about the show and her co-workers.
Finally finished rewatching the original series and finally just pushed through the 8 episodes out now, it's been driving me crazy not watching your reviews.
All I gotta say about X-Men 97 is that my jaw is still on the floor, it's just so good.
This show is a masterpiece .
OG X-Men has you believing anything is possible, X-Men ‘97 Reality hit you smack right in your face. I need Gambit back ASAP.

The sprites for Jubilee and the Sentinels in the street are referring to the X-Men arcade cabinet Sentinels and how the powers worked for the game for the X-Men. It was great seeing it because I have a ton of memories from when I was a kid and playing that game. It would be awesome to see either a reissue of the game or a sequel that is updated for modern game systems.
As much as I love Mojo I almost wanted this to be Arcade. But I guess it makes sense to analog it with ML gaming today and make it a spectacle.

More than expected goin on!
Episode 4 gave me flashbacks of playing the X-Men arcade game at my 9th birthday party with five of my classmates who I used to play pretend X-Men with on our school playground. Loved it! The X-Men were our Power Rangers.
There was more wild drama in this episode than there is when my daughter asks me to watch her play Barbies.
There's a chance that the events of episode 5 could possibly lead to their version of both Onslaught and the Joseph sub-plot when it comes to Magneto.
I was tearing up the next day thinking about it. Hell, even just watching the clips here got me all weepy.
That Watcher detail was awesome!

I'd bet a Magneto and Xavier come back in the final episode and one of the big moments is, they both say "To us our X-Men." And they are co-leaders in the next season. Because, taking away Magneto, in the best heel turn I have ever seen, and arguably the best character in a sea of great characters and killing him off in 5 episodes, is a massive loss of potential. Someone once said that you should only kill/retire a character when they have no more stories to tell. There is so much more there for Magneto.
A quality review and yeah pretty much nailed all my thoughts on episode 5. Up there with Blackadder Goes Forth's final episode in terms of emotional impact.
