    • @healthyvoicetips

      Hi Jeff, you have a lot of great questions. And I feel your despair to improve them all. Here are my suggestions: 1. Watch my video on how to release tension from the tongue and some ideas for exercises. 2. That statement is very general and I am not sure why or how you cannot articulate. This would be a good reason to find a speech-language pathologist who can help with articulation difficulties. 3. It seems that you can produce a resonant sound but you have trouble controlling when it happens. This is normal for someone who does not have experience in singing. Start with producing just simple sounds and figure out what you do when they sound resonant. Then trasfer the skill to other sounds and pitches. It's a gradual process and a good vocal teacher should be able to help you with that. 4. Same as number 3 just focus on nasality. 5. For anxiety issues, you need to find a specialist who specializes in anxiety. You are not alone and there are many people who suffer with similar issues but there are also many people who overcame their problem. 6. Just take a deep breath! You will be fine. Start addressing one issue at a time. Good luck.

      Katarina H. Hi Ms Katarina, im a band vocalist, and been singing for more than a decade. Last October i had a throat infection, and it was healed by antibiotics that the doctor prescribed to me but what i noticed is after that is, my falsetto is starting to not working well, until now, and it really stresses me, worry and scares it a lot, since after that infection, i wasn’t able to really rest my voice cause im singing every night for like 4 hours. I already went to ENT and the doctor said my throat is still ok, and no polyps or nodules are in there but can hear me talking with a really hoarse voice. He check my larynx and there we know that its swelling. He gives me a medicine for it but since its really not possible for me to rest my voice, cause im singing every night, until now im suffering. Just wanna ask, if there still a chance my falsetto can be back to normal if I’ll rest from singing for a month? Hoping for your prompt response. 😇

      If your voice hurts when you speak, make a referral to see a laryngologist. if your voice hurts when you sing, evaluate your singing technique and change something about it.

    when I practice for a while I notice that I can easily reach higher notes but I cant sing some lower notes I normally have no problem with.
    is it vocal fatigue?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      That is an interesting question. The typical sign of vocal fatigue is the inability to sing high notes because the vocal folds get swollen. I believe that your scenario is different. During vocal practice, you focus on practicing upper register and then you have trouble switching to the "heavier" sound production that requires different muscle activity. This may be "normal" for singers who don't have enough experience. My suggestion: work on both ends of your voice and include exercises that flow from one register to another to learn how to switch with more flexibility. Work on upper register, then go back to lower range (and it's ok if it doesn't sound right away), then go back to upper register etc. Does this make sense?

    • @VasilyMusic
      @VasilyMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This really happens most of the time. It's interesting. I'd say if you practice for a couple of hours in a certain register, your voice adjusts to it and it becomes harder to go lower/higher than that register. Like if I'm singing really high notes, after a couple of hours of practice I can hit some good notes in that region, but I lose the ability to sing the lower notes for the rest of the day. And vice versa.

If your voice is back to normal, then that's good. Next time, when you go to karaoke, don't push your voice so hard. Your voice is telling you that you used it in a harmful way. So change the way you use it.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends. It is very individual. It also depends on what you are warming up for - a big performance or just regular vocal practice. When you use your voice and you feel your whole body tired afterwards, that is ok. Singing is an athletic activity. When you use your voice and you feel tired in your throat or have a scratchy or itchy feeling in your throat, then you may be putting too much pressure on your vocal folds.

It’s like my voice just stops. Is that a tissue issues? It sounds like the muscular has discomfort- which I am not experiencing. My voice just up and leaves me. I can find it in lower notes again- it seems to be only in the higher parts. I just don’t understand the scientific reason behind it (aside from stress and fatigue). If you have any additional information that would be wonderful to hear. I am a singer in a band and losing my voice is a new thing to me and scares the crap out of me! Thanks!

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  ปีที่แล้ว

      I suggest that you have your voice evaluated by a laryngologist. There may be many different reasons for that. When the sound does not come out, it means that the vocal folds either don't come together in that range so the vocal folds cannot vibrate or the vocal folds come together but there is something preventing them from vibrating. What exactly is going on can be only seen on a videostroboscopic examination.

    I don't know if anyone will see this years after the post, but I have been singing rigorously for a show, three hour plus rehearsals every day for six weeks, and now my voice feels axhausted. The quality and range of my tone has decreased. I've been trained to not strain, and I try to ensure 100% that I sing healthily, but I think the sheer amount of singing has exhausted me. I'm going on vocal rest for a few days, as well as rigorous hydration and steaming. Any other thoughts or tips?

    Dear Katarina thank you endlessly for your videos, I'm not used to write comments but now I will as I started crying and feel confused.. As a teacher I've been struggling with my voice over a year now at first the ent doctor told me it was a dysphonia caused by overuse and bad management of my voice as I talk loudly in class and I sometimes scream out of anger.. I did exercises with an a voice therapist, it got better but not like before at all, it's still weak and breaks easily, I had dry cough a month ago and now I've got laryngitis and my voice got even worse.. I'll see him the doctor again to check my vocal folds but I'm extremely anxious and afraid that they're permanently damaged and I wouldn't be able to get my voice back again . Plz tell me what to do

      I am sorry to hear that you are having voice issues and you are worried about your voice. But it is good that you are seeing a laryngologist because I cannot really tell you what is going on with your voice. Only a doctor who can see with an endoscope can see and tell you. Whatever it is, there is always something to improve with our voices. Make sure that you ask your questions when you see the doctor. I wish you all the best.

    Hello Katarina. I dont know whats going on with my voice/throat for the past 6 months or so. I dont sing or talk too much and yet if I talk just a little bit I immediately start to feel discomfort in my throat. At first I thought it was because I started to train my neck with weights (although nothing crazy). Then I stopped it but it didnt go away. Sometimes I spend days in a row almost without talking and yet it persists. Should I be worried? PS: I dont have hoarseness or differences in tone, its just the discomfort and strain. Thank you.

    For my voice I use it all the time for singing and talking, I sing in choir for 5 hours a week, plus I sing all the time with the radio or just for fun, and I talk a lot, and I have had a sore throat on and off for the past month or so, and it will go away for a bit, and then come back if I sing for a little bit. And I have a weird vocal range, so no matter what part I sing (alto or tenor, my range is E3-A4) I am either pushing my high or low range. My voice also cracks sometimes in my middle range which isnt normal. Is that vocal fatigue?

      Hi Viictor. Build your range slowly. It does not happen overnight, it takes time. One semitone at a time. Do vocal exercises that take your voice up or down by a semitone and try to figure out what needs to adjust in your vocal tract to reduce tension. • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, your problems are not a sign of vocal fatigue. They are signs of an infection induced laryngitis. Sometimes, it takes time to get back to your normal voice. The upper range is the one that is most affected by infections because the vocal folds are thicker and cannot vibrate properly. Stick to easy vocal exercises for now, e.g. SOVT exercises or keep singing in the lower range. Hydrate well, steam your voice and give it several breaks during the day to restore themselves. Watch for tension creeping in while you trying to "reach" some notes.

It is true that it make take some time to see benefits of voice therapy but if you are feeling depressed that is a concern that needs to be addressed with your doctor. You are not the first singer who mentions "congested vocal cords". I am not quite sure what it means but I would guess it means swollen vocal folds. In any case, talk to your doctor. How can you build vocal endurance?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a very good question. Building vocal endurance is a process. Keeping a regular schedule of vocal practice and using the right exercises is important. Slowly and gradually increase the frequency and length of the vocal practice, for example if you practice only twice a week for half an hour, try to add another practice session into your schedule. Or maybe have an hour long session. But using the right exercises that will condition your vocal instrument to longer and harder vocal performance is also important.

    • @healthyvoicetips

      Yes, that is the right idea! Tea and hot steam. To prevent fatigue, maybe you can schedule a voice break between work and the nigh class - no talking before your teach! Instead drink one more cup of tea before you start teaching (in silence).

      You will not like my recommendation but here it is: visit a voice specialist so that he or she can look at your vocal folds and see what is going on there. But find a specialist who can do a video stroboscopy so that you can see the movements of your vocal folds, not just their structure.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot feel your vocal folds! You can feel some superficial muscles on the neck but again, you will not be able to "feel" individual muscles, more areas of the neck. You can feel your throat, especially when it hurts. And I am not sure how much you can "feel" your larynx but you can certainly control some of its actions.

      Hi @babi bella! I am sorry to hear about your voice troubles. I really cannot give you an answer because I am not sure what is happening with your vocal folds. The only way to find out and get answers is to visit a voice specialist. I suggest that you have a videostroboscopy done to find out how your vocal folds vibrate. There may be many different reasons why you lost your upper register. And the only way to know and start a successful treatment is to have your voice checked. I wish you all the best. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    The problem is you can't see a specialist if the injury was iatragenic. You will be denied a proper diagnosis and treatment plan every time and you may even become permanently blacklisted in the medical community overall.

      @@healthyvoicetips So curd(Hindi : Dahi or Duhee) is a dairy product obtained by curdling milk using bacterial strain Lactobacillus and is very popular in India. It tastes sour like yogurt due to lactic acid content. Yougurt is more homogeneous. Both Curd (Dahi) and Yogurt have a similar manufacturing process. Two specific strains of bacteria Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus are used in making yogurt where as a broad class of Lactic Acid Bacteria(LAB) are used in the making of Curd .
      th-cam.com/video/w02pX4_QYAs/w-d-xo.html
      Very common household product used in several preparations and also consumed as it is during lunch. Having it is as common as having carrot or onion salad in west.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, Anirudh! Thank you for such a detailed response. I probably did not know about it because I am lactose intolerant and I avoid any type of dairy. So, if a singer is allergic or sensitive to dairy, I definitely recommend not to consume it. Now, to your question. Curd or any other dairy product is not "bad"" for vocal cords, meaning they are not harmful. But, it is believed that singers should not drink or consume dairy products before singing because it leads to more mucus production. However, this belief is not supported by research findings. The research in this area found that people FEEL more mucus in their throats after drinking milk but when they measured the actual amount of mucus in their throats, it was not increased. Having said that, I don't recommend consuming dairy if you experience that feeling. Why would you put yourself in an unpleasant situation while singing? But we are all different, and if you are not lactose intolerant, I would suggest to experiment. Keep a journal after consuming curd and notice how your throat feels, how well you can sing, how much mucus you perceive in your throat etc. If curd causes you any discomfort or sensations that may interfere with singing, then don't consume it before singing. Here is a link to a video, I made on this topic, if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/yyOOsuqFNvw/w-d-xo.html

      I am not sure if I can help you. I am not sure why your voice becomes dry when you hiss. When you hiss, it's like saying the S sounds. And I am sure you say many S sounds when you speak normally. Does your voice get dry too? I would say just drink sufficient amount of fluids. Maybe you are pushing too much, maybe you are using too much breath (hissing does not need too much air). If you are worried, definitely go and find a voice professional who can assess you in person and give you individualized advice. All the best!
