The awsome guys at Baisley's high performace just finished up the machine work on heads and jugs and I'm excited to get the old girl back up and running again. Mike you’re demonstrating a “ lost art”! Twin cams & M 8’s with their throw away crank’s will never see this operation! Us guys from the old guard are passing on on this knowledge & hopefully it will be utilized by the new techs that want to be on top of their game!👍
I was fortunate to get a 2002 Dyna with an 88TC, it doesn't have a "throw away" crank. It's the last year of the forged cranks in those engines. Also has the Timken bottom end. They started those junky pressed cranks in 2003.
@@Kevin-ne3tl you really lucked out getting an early twin cam with the good crank! Upgrade the cam plate & oil pump & put a gear drive in her & she will be bulletproof!
Good to see how it is done. When I did it, I didn’t have the tool to cut it. I stood there one hour flexhoning it. It sure took its time but worked just fine in the end.

Never thought temps below 80 would be chilly but they are. Grew up in the north and the first 60 degree day in the spring we were running around in t-shirts. Years ago while living in Houston I decided with a couple of buddies to go to bike week in Daytona. Left Houston it was 85 got to Daytona it was in the 60's and we were freezing and all the snowbirds were running around in t-shirts and thought those guys were crazy. Then I thought about it and remembered they had just spent 6 months in very cold weather and 60 is warm when you have been in temps around 0. FYI I think the evo pins are .792 and anything before is .791. Later my friend.
The only time I had to use a reamer is after installing brass bushings during VW bug link pin rebuild.Luckily our reamer was set to the correct sizing so it went pretty fast. Slow but sure!

Marvel Mystery Oil been around for over a Hundred Years now, good oil for a lot of purposes. There's always a bottle of MMO, in my shop. Thats a real time consumer Mike, but you're doing it right. They'll be no more Piston Slapping (so to speak) once you've getter done. Luck to Ya.

I use an expanding reamer also. Did you mistake the pin to piston light press fit for the pin to bushing clearance of .0008" to .0012" at 2:44 and 14:05? They are two different specs. One has interference and one has clearance. I hope you do not fit the pin to bushings at a light press fit which is basically size on size. The pin would seize to the bushing and the bushing would pivot in the rod and overheat it. That would be very bad. Thank you guys.
Q. Call me lazy but if u had too much slop on crank end could a guy slip a clip washer down thier instead of doin all that tantro stuff? Not on knuckle pan r shovel.
Your call. Is it just endplay? If you shim it, will the rods still be centered? Is the endplay excessive because it is warn? Or, did someone set it up that way? What is the motor? Not enough info. Who measured it?
Isn’t there someway to do this before installing the bushing into the rods? Just seems like there should be just to reduce the chance of dropping things into the crank. Or would that make the bushing too weak to install and bend it? Never done this, so I’m asking out of ignorance and wanting to learn
No , when press into the rod dimensions change. They make two kind of reamers for this; adjustable and .non adjustable. I have both. Jim reamer is a one time shot through the bushing.

Thanks , not having that stabilizer on my engine is why the Harley (the supervisor) dealer damaged my crank also mike I have a picture of the RIST pin bushing where the gouged out a huge spot at the bottom of the bushing and they gave it to me as a finished product,,,, I wish I could have u here in tx the old timers like u with GREAT ethical work habits and attention to details are all gone in my area god bless u mike

It is the safest way.

The idea is to get it to fit the way you want. There is a lot of reaming in an old Harley motor. Most of it doesn't get worn out

Not really. Everything i contoured.
Yeah, we used to set our adjustable reamers up with the micrometer but they were straight reamers, not spiral. 👍

If the bushing doesn't line up with the hole, as desired, I simply use a Dremel with a burr to grind it out.

Here is what my 40-47 manual says.
PISTON PIN IN PISTON: Light hand press fit.
PISTON PIN IN CONNECTING ROD UPPER BUSHING: .0008" to .0012" loose.
