Trying To Fix Stuff: Xbox One Elite Controller (Series 2) With a Bad L3 Button

  • The L3 button doesn't make a "click" and isn't registered when pressed. Time to crack it open and try to fix it. It would be a lot easier to buy a replacement Series 2 analog stick but I didn't want to wait...

What temp did you use to remove the stick, and what tools did you use ?(solder braid, solder pump...?)
This thing seems impossible to remove. Alternatively, would you consider using hot air for this process ?
    Thank you !

The xbox controller has a pretty big ground plane, which sucks up a lot of heat. I've taken them off with hot air, and then cleaned up the holes using a solder sucker or braid
To make it faster, I just use the soldering iron (about 400C) and solder sucker. Otherwise I'd have to take the green PCB off the board to use the hot air. Plus the hot air might melt the plastics, and I was trying to just swap the button on this

@@KylesTinkering thanks for the fast answer ! I'm trying to do the same as you, only change the button, so I might avoid using hot air. But my solder sucker doesn't seem powerful enough to remove the solder. Do you have any buying advice for this particular tool ?
Again, thanks for replying so quickly

@@sim_lmbr add a big glob of solder to all the points and move your iron across them while pulling the analog. Use something like a flat screwdriver to wedge under the analog because the metal will get very hot. Should wiggle out. Then just apply the soldering iron and sucker until you clear the holes

This video was LEAGUES more helpful than anything else. Sadly, my right analog stick is completely destroyed on the inside. It vibrated off of my PC and onto the floor (because I didn’t realize it was still plugged in when I was playing a game with mouse and keyboard. I tried to take the controller apart, but when I went to take the caps off (the part you said you had to twist to get off), I think I just made the problem way worse. The right analog stick doesn’t really move at all now.
I read that you aren’t currently doing repairs. But do you know of anyone who is? At this point, the controller is unusable or unsellable which hurts my heart and my wallet. My only option is to send it off to be repaired.

Sorry about the delay. I don't know of anyone in the states, but there are a lot of people that do repair services on ebay or I'd post in the r/consolerepair reddit, I've seen people post they fix stuff for a fee. Hi, thanks for the informative video.
I have attempted a fix by taking apart my elite 2 controller and opening the right sensor, and placing a thin bit of paper between the sensor and clamping the sensor back over the paper, this seems to have sorted my stick drift! However now when I rotate my left stick it feels very 'clunky' where as my right analog stick which I haven't touched does a smooth 360 degrees, my left one feels like it 'skips' not too sure how to explain it, it's as if it hasn't been screwed back in far enough or it's been cross threaded, any advice appreciated thanks again man!

    • @KylesTinkering
      @KylesTinkering  ปีที่แล้ว

There are people that offer this repair service on eBay, ship it, they fix it, and gets shipped back. I believe Microsoft will also do it, just not free under the warranty
You could also call some local shops (electronic repair/phone repair/game stores) and see if they are able to do it. Just look out for reviews before going with them
The last ditch effort, sell off the controller as parts/not working on eBay and buy another. See which option is easier/cost effective

If it's getting stuck down then there's probably something sticky around the button, preventing it from moving. You'll need to disassemble the entire controller so you can get to the power button and the hole it goes into and clean out whatever is keeping it stuck.

    • @KylesTinkering

If it's not registering with a new button, and you can use a multimeter to make sure the button itself is working, then the "signal" trace back to the main chip is bad. Check to continuity to see where it's broke and run a jumper wire. Might be as a simple as the via itself was bad and you just need to solder directly to one of the button legs and to the trace next to it

I like the video very easy to follow! I had a question before I try and tear into mine. I dropped it and the left trigger seems to be lose in the housing and it won't lock in when you set the trigger depths. I don't know if it's worth repairing (it's out of Warranty by a month and a few days), and now one in town does repairs on them. I don't have the proper tools to open it up to start but I'd be willing to try if it was as easy as ordering a part. I also have the option to sell it to gamestop and get a new one for 60 dollars.
