    High Command: 40% lighter eh? That means that they can carry 40% more ammo!

      that would likely be the point remember one of the reasons 556 was chosen over a 762 was the weight allowed them to carry more 556.

    Takin' something from SIG isn't new for the U.S forces. They swapped out the Beretta M9 pistol for the SIG Sauer P320 three years ago.. Or better to say SIG won the contest for the contract and the replacement is in progress. Their pistols are developed and built in northern Germany. Although they've announced the shutdown of their German facility due to economical reasons. The laws here in Germany make it too difficult to supply the competition shooters and law enforcement in a way, which is beneficial for their company. I would shutdown those facilities as well if they don't make enough profit to benefit the whole company. That would be one more top notch company that Germany loses because of ridiculous laws around gun manufacturers. The same laws are the reason why H&K can't provide more civilian models of their systems for the international market, because they are just not allowed to export more. This explains why their guns are so expensive. They have to make the best profit within the limit they are allowed to export. If they were allowed to export as much as they wanted, oh boy I would love to see what else they would sell... Therefore German facilities are too expensive from the economical point of view because they just can't sell, export and produce in a way which has positive effects for the company.. Sad but true and I am happy that those two brands won't die because of that. SIG and H&K already have facilities in the U.S (SIG has its primary facility in Switzerland as well) and it is only a matter of time until H&K leaves too, if you ask me.

      @MrKeserian 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I actually carry a Sig pistol (P229 in 9mm) that was produced at the Sig facility near Epping, New Hampshire (their actually factory isn't in Epping, but that's where the training center that I've been too far too much is at). It's a wonderfully machined piece of engineering.
      While the mechanism is simple, shocking for a German firearm (I'm joking!), the machining is gorgeously done. Even without lubrication every piece slides effortlessly, and you can tell the tolerances are absolutely perfect. The ergonomics are absolutely perfect: even in a rapid draw from holster it feels like the grip just settles perfectly into your hand and in a natural draw your trigger finger settles perfectly just above the guard.
      Glock designs perfectly adequate firearms. They'll get the job done, and will do so reliably. I feel like a Sig is a perfectly functional work of art: it'll get rounds down range, but it'll put a smile on your face while you're doing it (assuming your shooting at paper or steel, obviously).
      Just my two cents. Obviously, this is a subjective opinion, but I also really prefer the weight of a full steel handgun to a plastic frame. There's something about the weight of my Sig in my hand that says, "Hey, this is a lethal tool, respect it!"

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably a similar situation in Germany to what we have in the UK regarding handguns, with the 2012 Olympics apparently they had to do a whole assault course of paperwork for the pistol shooting athletes to A) train in the first place and B) allow foreign teams into the country with equipment.

    • @caelodevorago608
      @caelodevorago608 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@zeqillanes4312 Weight is the most important factor of a military firearm. It determines your ammo count, your tactics, and how the gun preforms. IIRC, the M14 (Like the Garand, albeit the Garand is a weapon of it's time) jams incredibly easily. Where as even the original AR-15/M-16 from vietnam could run while covered in mud (It's biggest issue was the fact they ditched the chrome parts, and didn't issue cleaning kits).
      A DMR makes a poor main infantry rifle, and it's also why practically no major nations right now have standard issue full size rifle caliber rifles.
      An M14 for todays world would be a horrendous rifle for standard infantry use primarily due to weight. Why have a full sized rifle round that has the same, if not worse, penetrating power than say a 5.56, 5.45, or 6.8? You can carry significantly more ammo
      Not even just IRL, even in bloody games it's true. In ArmA 3, in proper milsim, you aren't gonna carry an M14 when you have an M16 available, and you aren't the DM, why? Because I can carry sometimes up to TWICE the ammo.

      Well actually, perhaps that is actually a plus, since the heat is better retained in the plastic bullet and better directed to where you want it rather than with Brass - heat dispersion in all direction. Plastic therefore could offer less rifle overheating. The heat energy ideally wants to be directed out the end of the barrel with the bullet for maximum efficiency. just my two cents - right or wrong.

    You've got to be careful about galvanic or "bimetallic" corrosion when you couple two different metals. Steel typically doesn't play well with brass because it has a different electrode potential. That ammo probably won't have a great shelf life. Look up images of galvanic corrosion and you'll see why. It doesn't take much moisture and the moisture doesn't have to have that many impurities before your ammo starts looking like a crusty old battery.

    • @matthiuskoenig3378

    Honestly the Sig's seem like the best bet familiarity with huge advancements in performance while the bullpup seems meh at best the rounds being spit out near your face seems like a huge drawback to me and the caseless ammo seems like a huge risk for reliability of the ammo its a plastic casing so dirt and grim could stick to it making jams and poor feeding a problem not to mention how humidity could affect it all in all Sig seems like its just better in every way except for weight reduction although still better than current compared to the others it would still weigh a slight bit more

    • @rustybookman3512
      @rustybookman3512 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Sig's popularity's obvious for all the traditional reasons, and they aren't bad ones, however "OMG plastic will melt and jam, gotta be metal!" ignores some realities and/or makes some assumptions. "Plastic" covers an enormous range of properties, and temperature stability is one of them, and thermal conductivity's another. Those aren't miniature 1l. soda bottles going in there.
      As for the dirt/grit complaint, keep in mind that ejection takes place from a completely different chamber, so it would have a hard time working up through the flow cycle back to the firing chamber. Any grit would have to enter through the magazine, and since it's an electrical ignition system rather than percussion we have no way of knowing the operating tolerances in there. Their system might simply be less vulnerable to grit than traditional cartridge systems. And finally, I consider the "pollution" objection in the OP to be a red herring, to an extent. Yes, brass can be policed up at the firing range, but who goes back to police it off battlefields? Metals can leach worse toxins into nature than plastics as they degrade, "more natural" here's a null term, because brass isn't natural and metals are seldom found in their pure metallic form in nature. The plastic casings may be easier to clear than metal jams, too, we didn't get to see all the details WRT that. We'll have to see.

      @Jason Dubya-DEEZNUTS M4 needs an upgrade though although you probably won't get one until Colt Canada does something. They also want to upgrade bullets because they need more kinetic damage downrange. 5.56, 5.45 and 9mm are great at penetrating but don't like to actually put things down (most terrorists don't wear body armor so it's overpeneing targets having minimal damage on methed up targets). This is why the .300BO and 6.8mm are being looked at (already tried to replace them with the scar but that didn't really work out since FN didn't want to actually start fixing them until recent). As for the .338 Lap that ammo is just godly which is why they want more of it lol. Same reason the Russians are back to looking at 7.62 and 9x39 & upping the fire rate to 700 with the Ak-15 and Ak-12.

    Yes, the brass ejects there, BECAUSE IT ALWAYS EJECTS ABOVE THE MAG.
    The bolt hast to extract the casing from the chamber and eject it before stripping another round off of the top of the mag. The best way to do that is to have the brass eject on the rearward stroke and pick up the new one on the forward stroke, as minimizing the travel of the bolt reduces wear on the carrier group, heat, size of firearm, weight, and felt recoil. Keeping travel down also increases the cyclic rate and helps keep the muzzel rise down by virtue of the center of mass changing less while cycling. The ejection port will always be just above the magazine on any firearm (notice pistols also eject above the mag as well) that uses a bolt that both ejects and feeds.
    The exception proving this rule is (I think) the ARX-160 that ejects from the front to make it more ambidextrous

    Here are some links regarding the SIG SAUER weapons and hybrid three part ammunition they make:
    SIG SAUER MG-338 Machine Gun, MG-6.8, MCX-SPEAR Next Gen Weapons System - ShotShow2020 - TH-cam
    SHOT Show 2020: 277 SIG Fury Ammo - TH-cam
    My only criticism on the SIG design is that high pressure will cause deafening noise with a 16 inch barrel so you must have a suppressor on the gun. This in turn will make it impossible to have a bayonet installed. True, bayonets are out of fashion but they may come in handy on some occasions of close combat if you run out of ammunition. Other than that, I agree with you in regard to the SIG weapon. I think that the U.S. army will make a decision regarding their new rifle by this summer.

      Yeah, the manufacturer kind of shot themselves in the foot by getting too greedy. The XM8 didn't use standard picatinny rails or standard stanag magazines, meaning the US would have needed to not only replace the rifles, but also replace their accessories and mags, which severly compounded the cost of the weapon. On top of that, the polymer frames were cheaply made and supposedly melted during long periods of fully automatic fire. Making the weapon suitable for U.S. military use would have required the whole rifle be redesigned, and good luck trying to get HK to admit there's anything wrong with any of their weapons. Bright side, though, the gun still exists. Apparently the Malaysians were happy enough with it and adopted it for their special forces.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, not happening any time soon. You basically need a mini nuclear reactor to power such a weapon powerful enough to actually do any damage. Wouldn't even be a good idea to try till solid state batteries become a thing for vehicle weapons. Even still, a gauss rifle or rail gun would be more efficient. Basically put, the gauss is likely the better weapon of the future.

      @@GameFreak7744 In theory solid state batteries would solves this but I wouldn't keep your hopes on those any time soon. I'm just saying energy based weapons are not a near future technology. Hell they might not even get into vehicles till I'm in my 40s-50s.

    The reason the Textron ejects the round separately and loads a new one in like that is because the plastic rounds aren't strong enough to withstand the heat/pressure of firing, so if you look you'll see the chamber is entirely a solid cylinder that rotates out of position to eject and load a round, so the strength of the plastic isn't an issue. It shouldn't affect firing rate because it's not true to say it's an extra movement - it's actually the same. Normal rounds are ejected when the bolt comes back to pick up the new round and the round is loaded when it slides forward - in this the bolt moves back, and then both loads the new and ejects the old when it slides forward. Still a single sliding action.
    Strength of the plastic round may be an issue when pushing the next round out but I'm fairly sure a round packed with metal and powder will be solid enough to push an empty shell out of the way.

      You can already own a civilian variant. Although it’s not chambered in 6.8mm. Sig’s bid is based on their MCX line of rifles, the bid is called the MCX Spear, but the rest of the MCX line up is readily available to the public already.
      Also, owning a 6.8mm rifle like that would suck. Ammo would be impossible to find because it literally doesn’t exist yet lol.

    The round you were asking about, the TEXTRON 6.8 is covered in Polymer but separates once the you fire the weapon! They also have a clear version of the Polymer where you can see the gun powder and actual round. The polymer around it is to basically just protect the rounds/casings.

    Just a point of order... the Textron ammo is not 'caseless' ammo, it's telescoping. The bullet is nested inside the cartridge reducing overall size. Previous attempts at caseless ammo were also telescoping ammo, but turns out making your cartridge entirely out of propellant generates 'issues'. Modern polymers are very heat-resistant but more importantly Pressure resistant, there is an upper limit to how much oomph you can put into metal cased ammo before the metal becomes fluid.
