They made several versions. It was really just a tech demo rather than anything intended to be put in service. Reloading in the field isn't possible other than swapping out the whole unit. Only real use for the one they showed would be against large waves of enemies. But scale up and you could have a massive artillery strike lol
Hollow points don't have the penetrating power as an FMJ. The thought is that "If I have to pull my firearm, I want to take care of the threat, but nothing beyond it"
Military found that it was more effective to wound soldiers than to kill them. A wounded soldier requires other soldiers to rescue them from the battlefield and then treat them and yet they still need to be replaced. Dead soldiers are not nearly as much of a hassle. Also, tumbling rounds, rounds move through the body in a tumbling and random pattern also do a lot of destruction, enough to have a soldier taken off the battlefield. The military also wants rounds that go through body armor easier than hollow points. Police and civilians on the other hand are trying to stop a threat as quickly as possible, without overpenetrating and going through the person you're shooting at and into someone else. For those reasons and others, expanding bullets and fragmentation bullets can be used by police and civilians for defensive purposes. Is it harsh? Yes! It's supposed to be.
@@dankuchar6821 one of my friends was a Royal Marine, he told me that wounding soldiers instead of killing them takes 3 extra personnel off of the battlefield, the medic, 2 other guys to remove the wounded. That was why they are taught to shoot center of mass, solar plexus. Effectively one shot to wound = 4 people taken out of the equation.
That's military and dealing with large numbers of combatants , but for shooting a mugger, home intruder, rapist civilians & police generally prefer hollow points. Not trying to kill your kids or wife by FMJ going through the bad guy and the next 3 walls just to kill your family,. Wayne Gove Corbon Powerball is a whole hell of a lot better at turning a breathing dirt bag into a not breathing dirtbag than basically any other kind of personal defense ammo, nasty stuff, essentially it is a hollow point round with a piece of polymer stuck in the cavity and that piece of polymer delays the expansion of the round until it is deeper in the body but it also has the effect of increasing the severity of expansion and the bit of polymer has a tendency to break off the round inside the body and create another wound channel
@@saintmichaelsarchangel2644 I've done a yearlong ballistic study and actually determined the difference between the .22's effectiveness and the 9mm during a "one shot stop" of the crook is about 30%... .22 failed 1/3 times to stop the guy with the first shot. The point? Well .22LR is the worst common pistol caliber to use on a bad guy, but moreso that seeing as the difference between .45, .40 and 9mm was 2% or less on all counts over a study of 1000+ shootings, it doesn't actually matter and I refuse to pay that much for 9mm when SHP is expensive enough. If it don't work once, shoot twice, maybe thrice, four times, five is usually the max. Don't let yourself get so caught up in the debate. "Whole hell of a lot better" don't mean much when it broke the bad guy's sternum and popped his heart like a water balloon anyway. ;) You're welcome for saving you money on ammo. ;)

Moisture also degrades Kevlar so it protects the helmets from dings and scratches that may compromise the helmets integrity. It is also just faster and cheaper to swap cloth than paint a whole new pattern. Smarter not harder, that’s why most cover if they can instead of paint.
5:22 Ive actually studied this effect before, when I developed a very complex personal-use mod for Fallout 3 that calculated realistic damage from the round's ballistic characteristics and the target's body mass, tissue density, and protective wear. The most frightening rounds (like the 5.56mm NATO) not only tumble, but because of the relation of size of the meplat and the ratio between the length and diameter of the bullet and its material, are unable to withstand the hydrodynamic correction within soft tissue and fragment *mid-tumble*!! It's like having a miniature buckshot shell go off inside a person's body! In the case of someone wearing power armor, or giant bugs, the effect is even worse since the fragments often lack the energy to actually penetrate the back of the armor/exoskeleton and bounce around inside the body cavity! I also found that mushrooming rounds, while having greater stopping power, caused less overall harm than piercing rounds because of the bloodloss from the blowout effect causedby the round's exit wound. Of course, it's spectacular when used on ferals or hungry super mutants.... not very effective on robots, though.
This, and hollow point rounds DO actually reduce the chance of injuring someone innocent standing by because they are much less likely to exit the person they hit and therefore are less likely to exit that person and then continue on to hit someone else. Also, in the real world, 5.56 is horrible at penetrating armor. Even armor piercing 5.56 is relatively bad at penetrating armor when compared to .308 or 7.62x39 for example. That’s why the US military is looking at getting away from 5.56. Because in a “near peer” conflict against a nation with access to advanced body armor 5.56 is not very effective. Look up the next generation weapon program that the US military is funding. One of the requirements is that the weapon be chambered in 6.8 rather tan 5.56 in order to increase effectiveness against armor.

@@Tiniuc oh for sure, 5.56 AP is still capable of penetrating MOST body armor. I’m just pointing out the fact that because 5.56 is firing a small bullet (usually 55 grain) it doesn’t always carry the energy required to penetrate armor. The 5.56 rounds that can are made of Tungsten, and that’s super expensive. If the military switches to 6.8, the round will be able to penetrate armor without the need for tungsten so the bullets can be much cheaper. Edit: my family sells ammunition and I’ve been around guns my entire life. So I know a little bit, but I’m definitely not the most knowledgeable person about this. Also, that mod you made sounds dope, if I played many video games I’d definitely try it out!

Until we have a space elevator, Rods from god isnt really plausible. When we have a space elevator, there are better solutions then using large tungsten rods. So it indeed gets outdated when its possible. In addition to that, 11.5 tons of TNT isnt all that much explosion force, especially considering that most of the force is directed into the ground. It may work good as a bunker buster but thats it. There are already functioning short range missiles with equivalent explison force and for anything that needs more range, there are intercontinental missiles with different warheads. The rods itself probably are pretty cheap, but bringing them into space costs more then any IC Missile with nuclear warhead could compare to.
Iirc the main advantage was penetrating power, not explosive force. Because it's not an explosive, it's a tungsten telephone pole moving at orbital (15+km/s) speeds. There will be an explosion where it lands, but it will also be doing damage dozens of feet below ground.

As to the railgun; It actually isn't that big. The iteration you saw in the video was already figured to be able to fit into the Zumwalt's current turrets with some adjustment. It isn't that much larger than current 5 inch guns. What is interesting is other companies are in the process of developing other railguns for the US, including a land based artillery that will make extensive use of that "fragment" method mentioned in video that will be effective against aircraft, missiles, and targets on the ground. As for the laser, we have more than just the naval mounted one. We even have one deployed in an aircraft for destroying enemy strategic weapons at/before launch. And "hacking" is no more an issue than for any mounted weapon on a naval ship (Gun, CIWS, or otherwise).

Hollow points don’t overpenetrate(correct me if I’m wrong) because the bullet breaks apart once it impacts, so instead of a standard bullet going through someone and hitting the object behind said person a hollow point’s tip will break apart in the body into smaller pieces and lose pretty much all of its energy.
@@flamee23312 - they showed a picture of a fully expanded ('mushroomed') hollow-point. A properly designed/manufactured hollow-point won't fragment at anything like 'normal' pistol velocities. The mushrooming acts like a parachute to slow the slug down, so as to lessen the chances of over-penetration; if it does exit, ideally it'll be going slow enough to *not* go through anything else.

@@flamee23312 - no problem. There *is* ammo that fragments, actually, there're different fragmenting-ammo designs. And yes, it pretty much guarantees to eliminate *any* chance of over-penetration. Originally it was for use in environments where over-penetration was considered excessively risky, such as aboard aircraft. Probably the best-known such ammo is 'Glaser', which comes in different categories. Each category is set up for a different need, from low-penetration, to absolutely *minimum* penetration. On a practical basis, the big problem with Glaser, and *many* of the fragmenting ammos, is expense. Glaser ammo is *expensive!* (Like $2-$3 per round! Maybe more; I haven't bought any in a decade+.) And most all of the other stuff is almost as expensive! (If it's good.) To explain: Glaser ammo *looks* like ordinary FMJ ammo, but internally is like a miniature shotgun round, with really small - like #9-#12 sized - shot in it. Some other fragmenting ammo looks similar to hollow-point ammo, but if you look closely you can see that the little splits in the jacket at the tip actually go down into the body of the bullet itself and become fissures in the lead, so that instead of just 'mushrooming', the bullet actually does fragment into, depending on the design, 4-6 pieces. (This may have been what you were thinking of, if somebody showed you one of these, but called it a 'hollow-point'; if it's *designed* to fragment, it shouldn't be referred to as simply a hollow-point.) Hope this is all clear to you, & doesn't just confuse you further!
It's not in use. It's in testing but it does exist. It's too large, costs too much, and need to be repaired a lot so it's still being tested and modified
5:39 there’s actually good argument for it because pistol velocity in 9mm and 40 pistols (often used by the American police) does have sufficient velocity to pass through a target and hit bystanders behind them. With the expanding ammunition the velocity is quickly lowered and the bullet *usually* stops within the target, and if it does pass through it doesn’t usually have to velocity to cause lethal damage to the next target in line.
Many police forces use expanding bullets. They usually shoot in a population dense, urban area usually so over penetration is a problem. Militaries usually shoot in open areas. The ammunition the Dutch police uses is specially developed for them and actually quite expensive. Also, it is not the Geneva convention that limits the military use of ammo to FMJ but the Hague convention as is mentioned in the video.
All weapons on a modern ship are electronically controlled. If it's a laser, torpedo or cannon doesn't matter. Also... loads of military stuff gets hacked. Iran hacked and landed a US spy drone. In Afghanistan the Taliban could not take over drones but they could view the video feed from them... because those were not encrypted.
Just to put it out there, the reason why police say hollow points prevent additional casualties is because if they have to shoot someone, a hollow point has a FAR less chance of going straight through, meaning if someone is behind the person getting shot, they won't get shot as well. Hollow points do a lot of damage, but only to one target.

With current day satellite radar assist, recon drone and the likes, it's much easier to lock on to the target, and the fact that it's on a ship increase its mobility. Downside is the consumption of power, the fact that it shit out ONE projectile at a time with considerable amount of cool down, and the maintenance. Dear God, the maintenance... Basically, not a very reliable weapon in an open combat scenario, but not to be underestimated either.

Such as the backstop often times for LEO involved shooting are more dangerous to the general public, hence the reason hollow point is used. So just found your video, I actually was a laser repairman. My father is one of the last few still alive. Hes actually built a few lasers for the military back in the 80s. I can answer alot of your questions if you want. Lasers dont misfire and they have an infinite resolution. Meaning if the laser is in direct pathing it will hit its target. Depending on the density of the object in its pathing and the output of the laser the object behind it will of course have a reduced efficiency on light. That's how they use safety glasses for lasers. They just put up a filter blocking the dangerous wavelengths. Feel free to ask me more.

The interesting thing is that the original design used twice the material - it was supposed to be twice as powerful; but they got nervous, not being sure that there were/weren't unknown synergisms that would make it unpredictably powerful, so they replaced half the material with inert material. This is likely because the US prefers future Tech use. meaning that any defense systems the Ford might make use of that have a high power requirement will have significant growth room on the Ford ship design. We did this with the M1, followed by it's upgrades to M1A1, M1A2, M2A1, and M2A2 main battle tanks. In addition, despite other answers like a electromagnetic launch system, the reality is that the Ford is a ship that is designed to have new gizmos plugged into it with room to spare. Plus high capacity, low use makes for a far longer lived vessel.
I was stationed on the Ponce, 1985-1987. The ship is named after Ponce’ de Leon. The Ponce’ is a LPD (loading, transport, dock) with around 400 crew. The ship’s mission is to transport Marines to their assault location. We could carry between 800-1000 Marines with landing craft, an occasional tank and other toys designed to break things. The ship was scheduled for decommissioning but it’s found new life. (I still want to know why the Navy changed from dungarees to camo. Better not mess with the cracker jacks.)

Project Thor: cost prohibitive for actual deployment, technology 100% does currently exist. Railgun: produced, tested, currently being refined into smaller and more energy-efficient forms (and has been tested from a naval vessel, I believe). The viability of the railgun is being pushed forward and advanced, but will likely only be used as a projective interception weapon and/or a cheap alternative for missiles against targets within range of naval vessels and established bases of operation. I'd heard they're working on trying to get a railgun airborne, but the issue is the huge energy requirement and the incredible recoil. Neutron Bomb: the worst part isn't spreading the radiation, as that's not the sort it emits. Gamma rays do not cling and irradiate, they cut through like a knife, killing you before you know you're going to die slowly (unless you're exposed to enough to cause more immediate damage than guaranteed death in a matter of days). Plague Bomb: the Bubonic Plague does not cause people to start dying in an hour, or anything close to that fast. Laser weapons: most of the directed energy of the laser is absorbed by the target as heat energy, burning the target. It should not continue to deliver enough energy to cut through a target (in fact, the more it burns the harder it is for it to continue to 'cut' through), but anything that could theoretically go through would be absorbed by other opaque materials and/or scattered by things like clouds and ocean water. There's a reason they're not likely to use these weapons near or aimed at land targets. Hydrogen Bombs: the Russian one they alluded to was the Tsar Bomba, with a yield of 50 megatons of TNT. Largest explosive armament test in the history of the planet. AA-12: neat gun, but its most interesting features are the grenade rounds and the very low recoil (which FPSRussia was showing off with his cocky one-handed, no-look shooting) - other automatic shotguns have since been developed that are cheaper to produce and even more reliable. I forget the rest I haven't given comments about, but it's not really important. I just pick up bits of information from people who know a lot more about these things than I do, but they stick. Researching this stuff for yourself is more useful and enlightening, instead of watching a mediocre video about them, or the reactions to said mediocre video.

Yeah, he scoffs at that claim, but hollow point ammo tends to dump all its energy into the first person it hits and be stopped, or greatly reduced in velocity. Full metal jacket ammo, such as used in the military, is more likely to penetrate through the first person and continue on to injure or kill innocent bystanders downrange. So in essence, it is better at stopping the bad guy and is safer to bystanders.
over penetration while possible in theory is by and large a myth. if you hit your target with any round, your chances of over penetrating and hurting someone else are virtually zero. if you miss your target, any round including a hollow point will "over penetrate." just load your guns and try to hit what you're aiming at. yes you will get more efficient energy transfer on soft targets with HP but what if you need to shoot someone who is behind say, a car door or a windshield? this is where penetration becomes more important. do you really think you are that likely to get into a situation where you need to fire on someone but they have no armor, no cover, nothing whatsoever between you and him? this is why my mag loadout looks like: Two HPs, One FMJ, One Xtreme Penetrator, Two HPs, One FMJ, One Xtreme Penetrator, Two HPs, One FMJ, One Xtreme Penetrator, Five HPs for a total of 17 rounds of full strength 10mm per mag, for my first three mags. the string of five HPs in a row lets you know you are getting close to empty without having to count rounds which is again unrealistic to think you can do under stress, imo. then my backup mag is an extended mag loaded with FMJ rounds because I perceive them to be ever so slightly more reliable in feeding. by staggering the ammo types in each mag i know i can simply pull the trigger until the threat is ended, which is what you will probably do under stress anyway. i don't like the idea of carrying mags of FMJ and mags of HP so you can switch between them as you see fit. i don't think this is very realistic. i'm sure if you trained that way you can get good at switching ammo types to match the target, but mixing them in the same mag i feel is more reliable.
also imho, police don't use HP to be accountable in case of collateral damage. that's what they spend millions of dollars of your money on lawyers for. if they ever happened to "accidentally shoot" you with an FMJ round, do you really think they'd lose their job and their pension over it? just my two cents. i do think HP are slightly more effective per shot against soft targets though.

@marino deželak We should feel lucky tbh. It was originally planned to be 75 megaton hydrogen bomb but, because of some technical difficulties they decided to go with 50 megaton. They were really shaken up after the test. Apparently that powerful explosion may cause a chain reaction that ignites the oxygen in the atmosphere making it even scarier explosion.

When it comes to overpenetration with lasers the answer is usually "yes, and farther than you'd want but probably not as far as you fear". Being fired in non-vacuum environments does bad things to laser beams.

It has the same likelihood of killing someone the only difference is that if you clip the side of someone’s arm, one will take a chunk of the arm with it (still not killing the person) whereas the other will simply puncture the arm and go out the other end. My dad worked for McDonell Douglas Missile and Space Divion. In the mid seventies I got to see a video of a successful test of a rail gun in space! (among other things) The tech is actually quite simple. Of course it’s relatively easy to take out something in space because your target is most likely fragile.

The amount of energy needed to charge the capacitors to shoot it is insane and nothing reasonably portable other than that can power this on the field. Plus, the "dumb" projectile method is more suited to wide open areas like the sea. Even tho the ship to ship combat kinda went extinct after ww2, I assume shooting down an enemy ship would be way easier with that technology
The neutron bomb is a very simplified recreation of Chernobyl meltdown. They're also called dirty bombs from their reliance on the radiation release rather than the pressure wave to cause devastation. I wanted to know this to help in the design of interstellar space travel, but now I want to build defence systems so people can survive the destruction they can cause to one another.
Keep in mind, the railgun shown is 12 years old. That clip dates back to 2008. The patent dates back to 1919, but serious developement started around 2000. There's already a smaller and fully functioning railgun in service, but it's a test bench as of late. With nuclear reactors, the high power requirement is of little concern. Currently, the only issue is barrel durability. I forget the numbers, but it can only reliably fire like 15 times before replacement. The US Navy wants 500 shots. No material exists yet that can handle it.
The Metal Storm is used on ships as a last line, up close anti-missle system. That many rounds that fast create a "wall of lead" to, in theory, intercept and destroy the missile.
Yeah as an alternative CIWS system to the traditional gatling gun. Also the Metal Storm concept was used in other platforms too though, including a handgun, under-barrel grenade launcher, and mounted sentry gun.
It could also be used as a Tank mounted or a specific tracked vehicle battlefield application, or on fast jets similar to the A10 air superiority platform. No recoil, one of the drawbacks of the GAU-8A.

The closest Metal Storm has ever come to being used for anything is that IIRC Paraguay wanted to buy some MAUL shotguns with less-lethal barrels. Never for CIWS. Also the image in the video thumbnail is a prop build for CSI Miami.

At the end of the H-bomb segment, they talked about the Russians detonating a much bigger bomb. This was called Tsar Bomba I believe, you should look it up. Scary stuff, the mushroom cloud could be seen for hundreds of miles.

They made several versions. It was really just a tech demo rather than anything intended to be put in service. Reloading in the field isn't possible other than swapping out the whole unit. Only real use for the one they showed would be against large waves of enemies. But scale up and you could have a massive artillery strike lol

Hollow points don't have the penetrating power as an FMJ. The thought is that "If I have to pull my firearm, I want to take care of the threat, but nothing beyond it"
Military found that it was more effective to wound soldiers than to kill them. A wounded soldier requires other soldiers to rescue them from the battlefield and then treat them and yet they still need to be replaced. Dead soldiers are not nearly as much of a hassle. Also, tumbling rounds, rounds move through the body in a tumbling and random pattern also do a lot of destruction, enough to have a soldier taken off the battlefield. The military also wants rounds that go through body armor easier than hollow points.
Police and civilians on the other hand are trying to stop a threat as quickly as possible, without overpenetrating and going through the person you're shooting at and into someone else. For those reasons and others, expanding bullets and fragmentation bullets can be used by police and civilians for defensive purposes. Is it harsh? Yes! It's supposed to be.
@@dankuchar6821 one of my friends was a Royal Marine, he told me that wounding soldiers instead of killing them takes 3 extra personnel off of the battlefield, the medic, 2 other guys to remove the wounded. That was why they are taught to shoot center of mass, solar plexus.

That's military and dealing with large numbers of combatants , but for shooting a mugger, home intruder, rapist civilians & police generally prefer hollow points. @@saintmichaelsarchangel2644 I've done a yearlong ballistic study and actually determined the difference between the .22's effectiveness and the 9mm during a "one shot stop" of the crook is about 30%... .22 failed 1/3 times to stop the guy with the first shot. The point? Well .22LR is the worst common pistol caliber to use on a bad guy, but moreso that seeing as the difference between .45, .40 and 9mm was 2% or less on all counts over a study of 1000+ shootings, it doesn't actually matter and I refuse to pay that much for 9mm when SHP is expensive enough. If it don't work once, shoot twice, maybe thrice, four times, five is usually the max. Don't let yourself get so caught up in the debate. "Whole hell of a lot better" don't mean much when it broke the bad guy's sternum and popped his heart like a water balloon anyway. ;)

Moisture also degrades Kevlar so it protects the helmets from dings and scratches that may compromise the helmets integrity. It is also just faster and cheaper to swap cloth than paint a whole new pattern. Smarter not harder, that’s why most cover if they can instead of paint.
5:22 Ive actually studied this effect before, when I developed a very complex personal-use mod for Fallout 3 that calculated realistic damage from the round's ballistic characteristics and the target's body mass, tissue density, and protective wear. The most frightening rounds (like the 5.56mm NATO) not only tumble, but because of the relation of size of the meplat and the ratio between the length and diameter of the bullet and its material, are unable to withstand the hydrodynamic correction within soft tissue and fragment *mid-tumble*!! It's like having a miniature buckshot shell go off inside a person's body! In the case of someone wearing power armor, or giant bugs, the effect is even worse since the fragments often lack the energy to actually penetrate the back of the armor/exoskeleton and bounce around inside the body cavity! I also found that mushrooming rounds, while having greater stopping power, caused less overall harm than piercing rounds because of the bloodloss from the blowout effect causedby the round's exit wound.
Of course, it's spectacular when used on ferals or hungry super mutants.... not very effective on robots, though.

This, and hollow point rounds DO actually reduce the chance of injuring someone innocent standing by because they are much less likely to exit the person they hit and therefore are less likely to exit that person and then continue on to hit someone else.
Also, in the real world, 5.56 is horrible at penetrating armor. Even armor piercing 5.56 is relatively bad at penetrating armor when compared to .308 or 7.62x39 for example. That’s why the US military is looking at getting away from 5.56. Because in a “near peer” conflict against a nation with access to advanced body armor 5.56 is not very effective.
Look up the next generation weapon program that the US military is funding. One of the requirements is that the weapon be chambered in 6.8 rather tan 5.56 in order to increase effectiveness against armor.

@@Tiniuc oh for sure, 5.56 AP is still capable of penetrating MOST body armor. I’m just pointing out the fact that because 5.56 is firing a small bullet (usually 55 grain) it doesn’t always carry the energy required to penetrate armor. The 5.56 rounds that can are made of Tungsten, and that’s super expensive. If the military switches to 6.8, the round will be able to penetrate armor without the need for tungsten so the bullets can be much cheaper.

When it comes to Kilo-Kilo missiles you don't want to transport them into orbit for another reason: Cost.
When asteroid mining becomes common on the other hand, these suddenly become super affordable. And outdated, since by that point you can just asteroid drop targets.

Until we have a space elevator, Rods from god isnt really plausible. When we have a space elevator, there are better solutions then using large tungsten rods. So it indeed gets outdated when its possible.
In addition to that, 11.5 tons of TNT isnt all that much explosion force, especially considering that most of the force is directed into the ground. It may work good as a bunker buster but thats it. There are already functioning short range missiles with equivalent explison force and for anything that needs more range, there are intercontinental missiles with different warheads.
The rods itself probably are pretty cheap, but bringing them into space costs more then any IC Missile with nuclear warhead could compare to.

2:20 those are IDF soldiers, we had a that thing. it's called in hebrew "mitznefet" which translates to miter. we called them chef's hat, because you just look like a chef. the point of it is to break the silhouette of the head when you're lying prone, or behind cover, so that the enemy shooter won't be able to spot your head that easily. we took it on woodland operations, in urban combat we don't wear it, since it gives you away. (former Israeli defence forces intel-recon gathering).

As to the railgun; It actually isn't that big. The iteration you saw in the video was already figured to be able to fit into the Zumwalt's current turrets with some adjustment. It isn't that much larger than current 5 inch guns. What is interesting is other companies are in the process of developing other railguns for the US, including a land based artillery that will make extensive use of that "fragment" method mentioned in video that will be effective against aircraft, missiles, and targets on the ground.
As for the laser, we have more than just the naval mounted one. We even have one deployed in an aircraft for destroying enemy strategic weapons at/before launch. And "hacking" is no more an issue than for any mounted weapon on a naval ship (Gun, CIWS, or otherwise).

Hollow points don’t overpenetrate(correct me if I’m wrong) because the bullet breaks apart once it impacts, so instead of a standard bullet going through someone and hitting the object behind said person a hollow point’s tip will break apart in the body into smaller pieces and lose pretty much all of its energy.
@@flamee23312 - they showed a picture of a fully expanded ('mushroomed') hollow-point. A properly designed/manufactured hollow-point won't fragment at anything like 'normal' pistol velocities. The mushrooming acts like a parachute to slow the slug down, so as to lessen the chances of over-penetration; if it does exit, ideally it'll be going slow enough to *not* go through anything else.

There *is* ammo that fragments, actually, there're different fragmenting-ammo designs. And yes, it pretty much guarantees to eliminate *any* chance of over-penetration. Originally it was for use in environments where over-penetration was considered excessively risky, such as aboard aircraft. Probably the best-known such ammo is 'Glaser', which comes in different categories. Each category is set up for a different need, from low-penetration, to absolutely *minimum* penetration.
On a practical basis, the big problem with Glaser, and *many* of the fragmenting ammos, is expense. Glaser ammo is *expensive!* (Like $2-$3 per round! Maybe more; I haven't bought any in a decade+.) And most all of the other stuff is almost as expensive! (If it's good.)
To explain: Glaser ammo *looks* like ordinary FMJ ammo, but internally is like a miniature shotgun round, with really small - like #9-#12 sized - shot in it. Some other fragmenting ammo looks similar to hollow-point ammo, but if you look closely you can see that the little splits in the jacket at the tip actually go down into the body of the bullet itself and become fissures in the lead, so that instead of just 'mushrooming', the bullet actually does fragment into, depending on the design, 4-6 pieces. (This may have been what you were thinking of, if somebody showed you one of these, but called it a 'hollow-point'; if it's *designed* to fragment, it shouldn't be referred to as simply a hollow-point.)

5:39 there’s actually good argument for it because pistol velocity in 9mm and 40 pistols (often used by the American police) does have sufficient velocity to pass through a target and hit bystanders behind them. With the expanding ammunition the velocity is quickly lowered and the bullet *usually* stops within the target, and if it does pass through it doesn’t usually have to velocity to cause lethal damage to the next target in line.
I mean.... I'm just a civilian and my mags are always loaded with hollow points if I'm not going to a range.
Many police forces use expanding bullets. They usually shoot in a population dense, urban area usually so over penetration is a problem. Militaries usually shoot in open areas. The ammunition the Dutch police uses is specially developed for them and actually quite expensive.
Also, it is not the Geneva convention that limits the military use of ammo to FMJ but the Hague convention as is mentioned in the video.
All weapons on a modern ship are electronically controlled. If it's a laser, torpedo or cannon doesn't matter. Also... loads of military stuff gets hacked. Iran hacked and landed a US spy drone. In Afghanistan the Taliban could not take over drones but they could view the video feed from them... because those were not encrypted.

Just to put it out there, the reason why police say hollow points prevent additional casualties is because if they have to shoot someone, a hollow point has a FAR less chance of going straight through, meaning if someone is behind the person getting shot, they won't get shot as well. Hollow points do a lot of damage, but only to one target.

So just found your video, I actually was a laser repairman. My father is one of the last few still alive. Hes actually built a few lasers for the military back in the 80s. I can answer alot of your questions if you want. Lasers dont misfire and they have an infinite resolution. Meaning if the laser is in direct pathing it will hit its target. Depending on the density of the object in its pathing and the output of the laser the object behind it will of course have a reduced efficiency on light. That's how they use safety glasses for lasers. They just put up a filter blocking the dangerous wavelengths. Feel free to ask me more.

Project Thor: cost prohibitive for actual deployment, technology 100% does currently exist.
Railgun: produced, tested, currently being refined into smaller and more energy-efficient forms (and has been tested from a naval vessel, I believe). The viability of the railgun is being pushed forward and advanced, but will likely only be used as a projective interception weapon and/or a cheap alternative for missiles against targets within range of naval vessels and established bases of operation. I'd heard they're working on trying to get a railgun airborne, but the issue is the huge energy requirement and the incredible recoil.
Neutron Bomb: the worst part isn't spreading the radiation, as that's not the sort it emits. Gamma rays do not cling and irradiate, they cut through like a knife, killing you before you know you're going to die slowly (unless you're exposed to enough to cause more immediate damage than guaranteed death in a matter of days).
Plague Bomb: the Bubonic Plague does not cause people to start dying in an hour, or anything close to that fast.
Laser weapons: most of the directed energy of the laser is absorbed by the target as heat energy, burning the target. It should not continue to deliver enough energy to cut through a target (in fact, the more it burns the harder it is for it to continue to 'cut' through), but anything that could theoretically go through would be absorbed by other opaque materials and/or scattered by things like clouds and ocean water. There's a reason they're not likely to use these weapons near or aimed at land targets.
Hydrogen Bombs: the Russian one they alluded to was the Tsar Bomba, with a yield of 50 megatons of TNT. Largest explosive armament test in the history of the planet.
AA-12: neat gun, but its most interesting features are the grenade rounds and the very low recoil (which FPSRussia was showing off with his cocky one-handed, no-look shooting) - other automatic shotguns have since been developed that are cheaper to produce and even more reliable.
I forget the rest I haven't given comments about, but it's not really important. I just pick up bits of information from people who know a lot more about these things than I do, but they stick. Yeah, he scoffs at that claim, but hollow point ammo tends to dump all its energy into the first person it hits and be stopped, or greatly reduced in velocity. Full metal jacket ammo, such as used in the military, is more likely to penetrate through the first person and continue on to injure or kill innocent bystanders downrange. So in essence, it is better at stopping the bad guy and is safer to bystanders.
over penetration while possible in theory is by and large a myth. if you hit your target with any round, your chances of over penetrating and hurting someone else are virtually zero. if you miss your target, any round including a hollow point will "over penetrate." just load your guns and try to hit what you're aiming at. yes you will get more efficient energy transfer on soft targets with HP but what if you need to shoot someone who is behind say, a car door or a windshield? this is where penetration becomes more important. do you really think you are that likely to get into a situation where you need to fire on someone but they have no armor, no cover, nothing whatsoever between you and him? this is why my mag loadout looks like:
Two HPs, One FMJ, One Xtreme Penetrator, Two HPs, One FMJ, One Xtreme Penetrator, Two HPs, One FMJ, One Xtreme Penetrator, Five HPs for a total of 17 rounds of full strength 10mm per mag, for my first three mags. the string of five HPs in a row lets you know you are getting close to empty without having to count rounds which is again unrealistic to think you can do under stress, imo. then my backup mag is an extended mag loaded with FMJ rounds because I perceive them to be ever so slightly more reliable in feeding.
by staggering the ammo types in each mag i know i can simply pull the trigger until the threat is ended, which is what you will probably do under stress anyway. i don't like the idea of carrying mags of FMJ and mags of HP so you can switch between them as you see fit. i don't think this is very realistic. i'm sure if you trained that way you can get good at switching ammo types to match the target, but mixing them in the same mag i feel is more reliable.
also imho, police don't use HP to be accountable in case of collateral damage. that's what they spend millions of dollars of your money on lawyers for. if they ever happened to "accidentally shoot" you with an FMJ round, do you really think they'd lose their job and their pension over it? just my two cents. i do think HP are slightly more effective per shot against soft targets though.

Half the reason you use HP is so that all the energy from the round is dumped into the body instead of punching straight through meat, the point is to minimize risk and to literally drop a perp. My dad worked for McDonell Douglas Missile and Space Divion. In the mid seventies I got to see a video of a successful test of a rail gun in space! (among other things) The tech is actually quite simple. Of course it’s relatively easy to take out something in space because your target is most likely fragile.

The amount of energy needed to charge the capacitors to shoot it is insane and nothing reasonably portable other than that can power this on the field. Keep in mind, the railgun shown is 12 years old. That clip dates back to 2008.
The patent dates back to 1919, but serious developement started around 2000. There's already a smaller and fully functioning railgun in service, but it's a test bench as of late. With nuclear reactors, the high power requirement is of little concern.
Currently, the only issue is barrel durability. I forget the numbers, but it can only reliably fire like 15 times before replacement. The US Navy wants 500 shots. No material exists yet that can handle it.
The Metal Storm is used on ships as a last line, up close anti-missle system. That many rounds that fast create a "wall of lead" to, in theory, intercept and destroy the missile.
Yeah as an alternative CIWS system to the traditional gatling gun. Also the Metal Storm concept was used in other platforms too though, including a handgun, under-barrel grenade launcher, and mounted sentry gun.

At the end of the H-bomb segment, they talked about the Russians detonating a much bigger bomb. This was called Tsar Bomba I believe, you should look it up. Scary stuff, the mushroom cloud could be seen for hundreds of miles.
