    Ageing is bad period
    You lose fluid intelligence. You slowly lose the ability to function independently in society.
    You have increased risks of cancer, heart disease, dementia.
    You have reduced mobility, worsened joint pain.
    This is ageing. Its bad. Finding a cure for ageing is a humanitarian endeavour.

      @@RichRich1955 The odds are unfortunately that in 15 to 20 years you'll have/had cancer, have had sigbificant cognitive decline if not full blown dementia and will need help doing basic things that you could do in your youth. Thats the reality.
      You can think what you want about the young but being young is an inevitability. Growing old and disabled doesn't have to be an inevitability in the future.

    It's not about ageism, it's about money. If all the old people were prepared to pay for their own expenses, it wouldn't be a problem. The current model is unsustainable. All people will have to plan for their own retirement.

    This attitude of "aging is natural" is bad because then people will be less likely to fund research into curing it. Maybe we can't cure it in our lifetimes, but we are getting there. We're starting to see what's causing it and can start to think about curing it.
    And really, what is natural anyway? It's just a word. It doesn't mean anything. For instance, people say GMOs are unnatural, but we've been breeding animals and plants for as long as we've known husbandry and farming. It's not like we've got necromancers running around in the real world. Then we could talk about what's natural and what isn't. But science? Science is natural by definition.

      @@gorgthesalty You're talking about natural selection, I'm talking about the 2nd Law; you're looking at the past few million years, I'm looking into the next few trillion; shallow thinking. "Improving on the Hayflick limit" is and will never be a 'cure' for age, since ageing is unavoidable - differently than disease X, which you don't necessarily have to have acquired within your lifetime

    The problem with longer lifespans and better health is that inevitably it will lead to raising the age to retire from work. So if you think unemployment is a crisis today due to automation then imagine how it'll be when on top of that retirement age will be at 80 years old because we'll get to live 110-120 years. Yeah, you get 20 more years of waiting to take the job of someone who will eventually have to retire. So living longer will dramatically change the world, its economic structure, urban and rural development etc.

    There was no insight as to how our society will cope with the financial burden of this development. If you retire longer and our birthrates are decreasing rapidly then yes, the Grey Tsunami is terrifying for the younger generations. Millennials and Generation Z can't retire and this small talk didn't answer shit about how we can even attack the issue from any angle. She literally just said "don't be afraid of it".
    *YEAH WELL ITS PRETTY FUCKING FRIGHTFUL KNOWING THAT IN OUR CURRENT FINANCIAL TREND MY GENERATION AND THOSE TO COME WILL NEVER RETIRE!!! GIVE ME A REAL SOLUTION!*

  • @avalacos

    Not sure its a problem of ageism. Young people tend to be more willing to look at these issues and lean toward more politicially left ideologies, which champion social welfare and equality. The majority of politicians and lawmakers who would prepare us for this aging workforce are themselves old, but they dont need the same level of support due to their accumulated wealth. Its a problem of greed in my opinion

  • @causeno1048
    @causeno1048 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You're mixing two only slightly correlating things: Getting older and getting wiser. A lot of people become extremely wise long before they're old. A lot of people get very old without ever becoming wise.
    Getting older is an inherently bad thing. Your health declines. You lose fluid intelligence and the ability to adapt to new situations, which is one of the most important skills, especially regarding making sound political decisions. You are getting more susceptible to illnesses and you also become more fearful. You body literally succumbs to chaos as per the laws of thermodynamics. That entails literal pain. It's a bad thing, no sugar coating that.
    A mostly separate question is wisdom. If you use the time wisely might also get wiser. You might make experiences that allow you to understand yourself and the human condition better. You might learn that certain things aren't as important as they seemed and the other way round. And a society might profit from that.
    But *should* fight aging. Aging is inhumane. We should do everything in our power to prevent people and their peers from having to suffer through that. So we can have a society where youngling of 20 can learn from *and* play sports with their 300 years old grand-parents.

      How old are you? What age do you think that people should die?

    • @causeno1048
      @causeno1048 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juddiehinton6293 Well in an ideal world I think people die only if and when they want to. Not because their body has deteriorated so far that existence is pain and all their friends are dead, but just because they think it's time. I personally believe that time would never come. Life is so awesome, there's so much to learn, there's so much stuff to do and people to meet. But a lot of people I talk to about the concept of never aging and dieing simply of old age seem to express that concern. That they wouldn't want to live forever. To which I always reply: Well, if you really get that feeling and you're really getting tired of living, then you gather your friends and family and tell it to them, you give them a few weeks to say their last goodbyes and get used to the thought. And then you have a nice shower, take some pills and go to sleep forever.
      But apart from that, people would die anyway. Statistically speaking.if aging and all diseases were eliminated, average age of death would still be around 300. Just because of accidents and natural disasters and the like.

    Most of the lifespan enhancing drugs also increase neuroplasticity, making the elderly less Conservative.
    Every civilizational collapse in human history has happened after a baby boom due to the imbalance between Conservatism and Progressive youth who are problem solvers.
    The fact nootropic and life extension drugs share a common root will actually address this issue.

  • @LANBobYonson
    @LANBobYonson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lot of good points but a lot of bad ones too. People who think the elderly taking money for themselves is a problem are looking at the wrong thing to blame for why they don't have any. The truth is not only old people should be given enough to live. We all have a right to live. We should all be given the opportunity to have all our basic needs met no matter what subjective value we are to society. If anyone misuses that opportunity I wouldn't feel sorry for them though.

    I’m not going to try to prolong my lifespan if I get any illnesses or things like cancer. If they’re extremely painful I’ll take something for the pain but not curing anything from now until old age so I can die before I’m too old to function.

    This is the first one of these that I really disagree with. No matter how healthy your body is, it is in the process of breaking down. The reason her 66 doesn't look like my now deceased greatgrand mother's 66 is because we are desperately trying to"fix" aging and the speaker is evidence of that effort. Not only do we not have a satisfying term for 66 but age has brought us a host of diseases like Alzheimer's that were so rare that we also didn't have a name for it. As for sucking up resources, look no further than our current social security situation. Despite our best efforts everyone will not age well.

    I am a health professional that has worked in aged care, why I clicked on this video, the truth is that some people as the age their nueroplasticity diminishes and other mental faculties deteriorates, yes they really do struggle in a work place. But it is very individual some can keep working until their 70s even full time. Ageism is right, its applying a stereo type that is harmful, if an older person is capable then they should be allowed to work with out the assumption they will be incompetent, or if they arE 60 years old they will just retire soon so why hire them ? Where she is wrong ! Yes there is a crisis coming if we do not encourage older people to work and get rid of the Ageism, we need to let as many older people work as possible.

Shit falls apart. No healthcare. If everyone died in there 50s would be better. Leave some resources for the young people.

    This isn't about ageism, because just as much ageism exists against young people as it does against old people. This is about recognizing a very real problem of what happens when the percentage of old retirees goes up and up and the young workers have to support them.

    • @dawrongwitch9036
      @dawrongwitch9036 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ageism is worse for older people.
      And older people paid into the system. Their taxes paid for the younger generation education, roads. librairies... (if you recall those). They gave birth to, fed, clothed and educated aged the young people. So to me it's an honor to "support" the older generation.
      Young people are gonna get old too. So be grateful for the system that will take care of you when the time comes.

    The promise and potential of immortality is an empty one-especially in the face of mental and emotional faculty that has not adapted to such an elongated lifespan. In an imperfect universe such as ours, immortal existence will necessarily burden one with an endless supply of regrets and ennui that no degree of mental and emotional fortitude will be able to bear. Should human immortality ever be achieved, our species will look back on our mortal ancestors with envy, as their limited lives allowed them to lay down these burdens when the time came to do so.
