- Some say Half Japanese were the world's greatest underground band. Jad and David Fair started the band HALF JAPANESE in their bedroom in Uniontown, Maryland in 1975. Though neither could play a single note on any instrument, they went on to record one of the greatest albums of all time.
This was one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, those of you who hate Half Japanese need to relax and realize what they were doing. They're just having fun and making music, it's actually very refreshing.
The best band of all time
I'm envious of their confidence.
Amazing. I'd love to see the whole movie.
@KENVAIL Good point. The drummer ripping on the record industry pushing Styx and Supertramp on us wasn't too off though, was he?
I love this movie, Jad your the best david you as well
i've been trying to be a "good" guitarist for a long time. but then i heard what that guy said in the beginning about the science of a guitar. why didn't i think of that before? now it's so easy
say whatever you like
theyll be won in the end. time will tell
I met the Fairs the other week. Good dudes!
it love it. they make the least sense about music but at the same they make the most sense at of it.
Don't fight the feeling.
@nsteve111246 Moe became a fan when given cassettes of Half Japanese. When she got back into music in the 80's she asked them to be her band. Now, what would you do?
this is great...and mo tucker thrown in for good measure. super.
@carec15 I was talking to Tim F who played in HJ on a couple of records. He was a huge Zeppelin fan. There's room to like both I think.
even from this documentary - they started in their bedroom in MICHIGAN
Wow. Take it easy.
I saw that documentary of these guys on tv.
@plumgreen A very original take.
Can you upload the full movie pretty please
A smoking mind is a beautiful mind
Me, too.
wait till the midnight hour. its a cover
@squadcar2525 who says they're not "good" musicians if you think the music is good? Just a thought.
@warmwarmerdisco Don't fight the feeling.
@JeffKatz Earliest Half Japanese is a challenge to listen to for even the heartiest. Lester Bangs admits this in his essay on Horrible Noise. But challenges are good, and rewarding sometimes.
@jonmcroy You may be right.
@justentime66 I don't think that's what is being said here. Untrained people can do interesting things not using traditional tools and techniques, or can be awful. It depends on their sensibilities. And keep in mind that HJ has a broad spectrum of output, you may like their recent ripping performances of Nicole Told Me at the Scala in London that's on YT, or the surprising country rock touch used in Song of Love and Joy at Villette Sonique in Paris
@Darthmagnet I think so.
@JeffKatz Jeff, list away. I always welcome good recommendations.
@PhishPhan89 Phish and Half Japanese. You must be a music lover.
shows: good musicians don't always make good music and vice versa
@jessicagallagher That is such a positive comment. I like that.
@PaulaArnkvern Do you think Jad could sing Nirvana songs? With the melodies intact? (Not a smart-ass question but a sincere one)
School of Love is pretty much the greatest song ever.
@fortion32 I don't know.
@JeffKatz Before Green Day got rich and soft they were a strong sounding little band. Not too original or challenging perhaps.
@JBHutto The Ramones were a tight rock band in the traditional sense. which Half Japanese clearly wasn't.
@yummybacon a different side of punk.
"The Thing With A Hook"
@DOWDLE He certainly is one of a kind.
@dansftown Like an ice cold Upper 10 on a hot day in Luxor.
@HorrorFriends It's all about the music, eh?
@ssxj88 Who do you like?
@quadrophrenic Fortunately they were better than a "painfully bad amateur garage band." Or we wouldn't be discussing them here and now.
@isp10man Tell it, Brother.
@dennisandvicki Do you know where I can find guitar tabs for that one?
@54spiritedwill54 I agree.
@arranparma You don't say.
i'm still trying to figure out if this is the greatest "tongue in cheek" joke i've ever seen. a conspiracy against reality...
@ohadrean In a sense...innocence
track at 3:08?
@LesPaulXXX Me too.
@justentime66 A smoking mind is a thing of beauty.
@JeffKatz Laughing beats hating. Good attitude, sir.
What do you mean, "why?"
This is NOT Spinal Tap
@Berardinonize Do I have to?
@melancholicgaze Slippery slope
@truthisugly Breakfast at Baugher's?
@streetlight3989 I, too, am also mature, and maturing with every single day.
@suckstones At least your don't seem mean in your expression of dislike. Fair enough.
@justentime66 Me, too!
@isp10man Your hatred is passionate, indeed.
@hwcart Dirty stuff, please don't.

Not telling
@TeenageWildlife Bowie appeals to you, that is obvious.
Put on? Maybe, maybe not. (Like Andy Kaufman)
dude he never said his music was deep i think you just dont understand music exploration your so used to that led zeppelin epic song rock not the abstract experimental side of music
@LaDeenaJ Out of a hat
ok, now zoom out slooooowwwwwly.....
pffft. Its real punk.
@suckstones Don't eat it.
something shitty
this could possibly be the worst band ever..
I don't want to be a hater but it has to be said, Carrie Underwood is just so basic.
this is great...and mo tucker thrown in for good measure. super.
