Peter Serafinowicz perfectly captures the disappointment of the Phantom Menace

- The Phantom Menace was the greatest disappointment since, well, anything, ever.
Peter Serafinowicz voiced Darth Maul in the film. He talks about his experiences, and that moment in the cinema when you realised the film was a total disaster.
This is taken from an interview with Richard Herring from his Leicester Square Theatre Podcast www.comedy.co.uk/podcasts/rich...
I don't own any of the rights to any of this (including the photos). Please don't sue.
Also, they swear a bit. Consider yourself warned.
Could you imagine voicing the main villian in a blockbuster movie and NOT being invited to the films PREMIERE?
James Thomison to be fair there were extras with more lines than him lol
Can you imagine being the creator of the saga and not being invited to the premiere of the last movie of the saga?
@@thomasvolsin2422 it's arguable that George Lucas did much creating
He has like two lines bro chill
"Main villain"
The frame rate of this video is shockingly low.
But the resolution is excellent.
I know, you may as well be looking at a still image!
lmao
I like the bit where he puts his fingers down
fuckoff human eye can't see beyond 1 frame per 500 seconds! 4 frames per 1202 seconds is plenty enough!
When i saw the film at age 6 or 7, my favourite part was the trade embargo.
The poorly-defined tension! The vague threat of political turmoil!
I remember sitting in the theater as a kid, edge of my seat, wondering if they will settle the trade dispute or when we could learn more about the intricacies of the senate.
Alex Jones explained it for me
"Will you defer your motion to allow a commission to explore the validity of your accusations?"
Let me tell you, when I was 5 years old, this line was so exciting and impactful for me
And now, after the sequel trilogy..... looking back - the Phantom Menace doesn't seem too bad, lol
Not to defend it too much, because it certainly wasn't a patch on the original trilogy, but...
At least it joined up, made some sort of sense, and didn't break in-universe "laws of physics" etc.
Yeah, there might have been some boring bits about senates and trade disputes, but there were some good bits and I'll definitely take boring over bad.
I will say this: Darth Maul's dual-sided lightsaber was a complete game-changer for kids who liked to play Star Wars on the playground.
We were all Star Wars kid.
Yeah you had to up your game from my 70s darth impression.
@@oHaiKuu the official red handle 70s sabre was great until the plastic bent. You forever had a floppy end once this occurred.
And Lucas never explored that again.
Peter's impressions are so good, he just casually puts on one of the best George Lucas voices i've ever heard
Hey, have you seen 'darth vader in love' it is Peter's masterpiece!
Oh he’s practiced that for ages
@@stephenhall2980 I’ve seen that
I think Serafinowicz’s problem, and why he’s never quite become the superstar he should be, is that his impressions are too good. Proper Uncanny Valley territory.
If you like that impression and you haven’t seen this, brace yourself…

If the amount of lines Jar Jar and Darth Maul had in Phantom Menace were swapped...that would've been great.
not for sure. People usually like characters who talk less when they are badass fighters. Less is more with maul/boba fett etc
@@judcrandall3170 I think that how little he spoke in The Phantom Menace really enabled Sam Witwer's fantastic performance in The Clone Wars to be much more unique without being noticeably different. It probably ended up saving the character in the end.
It jar jar was less goofy that would've been great
@@judcrandall3170 Pretty much this. E.g. your evil character is way more menacing and badass if you just let him do the job instead of talk and do not overuse them. Only bring them in when needed, be effective and then leave. And as the general rule: show don't tell.
In general more they talk (especially about themselves), less menacing they feel.
Same actually works with any character. E.g. if someone has seen Clint Eastwoods old westerns where he usually talks very little and is just effective. It makes his characters more mysterious and more badass.
@@tubetorpedo That's what I don't like about Maul's character in the Clone Wars tv show. He's way to talkative. I do happen to enjoy him in Rebels though.
He's so spot-on and honest, I love that someone is being candid about Lucas and how the guy just CANNOT direct actors. Every film he actually "directs," his actors are totally lost, just 'saying' lines because of the horrible direction - "Um, just bigger, louder," or random, generic direction. Watch the making of Attack of the Clones where he just keep repeating the same direction and the actors kinda shrug their shoulders. I'm glad someone finally put their name to it and was honest, publicly.
+ronineditor
Lol McGregor's been doing that for a long time.
And then you have people saying the Prequels are missunderstood masterpieces better than the Original Trilogy. Seriously, I'm not kidding, there's many blogs talking about it. The guy can be a good creator, but he can't write good scripts or direct well.
al112v5 I don't hate the prequels personally but they have not aged well with the exception of ROTS. But im baffled people now think TFA is worse than the prequels
+Will Brock I don't hate them neither, I do enjoy the Clone Wars cartoon that came out from those movies, 2D & 3D versions. If we compare them with TFA isn't a fair comparison to be honest, because I remember how people were disappointed by TPM because it wasn't like the original movies, and then we have TFA, a clearly homage to the original Star Wars movie, and yet people complain that it is too similar. People are never happy, that's why I don't listen to certain opinions that really don't say anything but whining and bitching. With that said, TFA is another movie that is clearly far from being flawless and I understand the complains here, I do, like Rogue One wich it tried to be more realistic and it's fine, but characters there are more empty than in TFA, that's for sure, at least for me.
al112v5 the last jedi was a better second installment than attack of the clones
Peter Serafinowicz is one of the most underrated comic actors of our time. His own sketch show was absolutely brilliant. I love how his commentary on The Phantom Menace is mostly how the jokes don't land. Of all the discussion of the film, I've never heard anyone mention how the comedy just never works. Comedy that doesn't work tends to feel insulting.
Yep. Couldn't agree more

I've come back to listen to this story many times now and it's always hilarious. The juxtaposition between excitement and disappointment. The tragedy of starring in a huge film yet being treated like a nobody. His awe for George Lucas, and the gritty reality. Can't say I do. I'm also terrible with names so it probably wouldn't have helped...
Funny Ian who plays the emperor says he has absolutely no direction for his character either. George got so lucky having actors that cared about their roles because the originals would be a pile of shit if it was all down to him.
I saw in an interview Ian McDiarmid saying that George had asked him early on to make his voice sound more like Clive Revill from ESB so that they wouldn't have to dub over him. This specifically happened after George had said "I like what you're doing with the performance - we might let you keep your own voice" Apparently McDiarmid convinced Lucas that the voice was right for the makeup they had used, but it sounded like that was the only direction he had.
Ewan, Natalie, Ian and Liam saved this movie, the other 2, well, I'd say mainly Ewan, Ian and Natalie were the saviors lol but seeing the BTS stuff makes it looks like if it wasn't THAT bad but of course, you have PT fanboys trying to mock you for disliking George's hability as a writer, he has never been good, he has always been better as a creator and having other people helping him.
@@al112v4 The unsung heroes of the franchise are Marcia Lucas and Gary Kurtz.
Frank Bowman Absolutely! His ex wife, Gary and Irving (RIP both) truly helped George during the early years of SW, and then ROTJ happened haha. I don’t dislike it, but definitely both first 2 movies were superior.
@GiRayne The first Star Wars has poor dialogue, dodgy acting and peculiar accents? REALLY ? In the wake of the Prequels there's a huge amount of revisionism towards the Original Trilogy and attempts to denigrate it. Absolute tosh of course because the Prequels exist because of the staggering success of the Original Trilogy. Why do you think Disney paid 4 Billion Dollars for Star Wars? Clue: Because of the cultural phenomenon that the Original Trilogy became.
So let's stop jumping on this nonsensical Revisionism bandwagon!

TurnTableStudios Why? Compare it to a musician, you’re not really going to be getting more direction. I feel like if you say yes to job you already conceive some sort of idea what you are going to do and be proffessional about it.
@@MrHestichsI know this is old but of course you would be getting good directions. The director has a certain image of the character in mind that they want the actor to reproduce. If the actor can't, they will be as specific as possible to make them. Watch Tarantino's directing. Or Nolan's or Vince Gilligan's. Brilliant stuff
@@tomekk.1889 Yeah that's not necessarily true. Yes there are directors who have that style, others like to see what the actors can do and work from there. In case you were unaware, filmmaking is an artwork and there is no 1 right way to make art. Perhaps this is why something like Star Wars exists, you see. Because Lucas didn't direct traditionally.

What happened to Lucas is the same as what happens to many leaders, business owners, and creative types when they become big and surrounded by sycophants and ass kissers - they lose all ability to judge, or have judged, the worth of their own ideas. They become adverse to any and all criticism and incapable of knowing shit when they see it.
Luckily for us, a few people had the balls to stand up to Lucas when he wanted to include a child Han Solo in Episode 3.
+Derke73 People forget that George Lucas really only directed one good Star Wars movie, and that was the first one. Empire and Return were directed by other people and Empire is hands down the best of all six movies. Star Wars movies are better when Lucas isn't directing them, that's why I have so much faith in Episode 7.
+Fedzi
"George Lucas really only directed one good Star Wars movie"
Two good movies, ROTS being the other. The first one wasn't just good however, it was GREAT.
"Empire is hands down the best of all six movies."
Hands down? IV, if not on par, is certainly a very, very close second.
Also I heard he directed some of the throne room stuff from VI, i.e. that part of the movie that was as good as Empire - but don't quote me on that, just what I've heard.
+Derke73
"a few people had the balls to stand up to Lucas when he wanted to include a child Han Solo in Episode 3."
wat
+Derke73 Well, Lucas, at least, stuck with the lessons he had been given. He wrote about what he knew.
He wrote the original trilogy after watching tons of old serials, Kurosawa samurai films and classic Hollywood adventure movies.
Later, he spent 15 years negotiating deals for Lucasfilm, and turning ILM into a major SFX company. And he makes a trilogy about trade negotiations.
I think it's true, he was also surrounded by jaleous and envious people who wanted to steal Star Wars away from him, eventually will encourage him with bad ideas instead of warning him. I'm thinking Speilberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger. They definitely plotted against him and succeeded in stealing Lucasfilm by lying to him. Now look at the movies they are making, the prequels are masterpieces next to Force Awakens. I'd love to hear Serafinowicz make a review of it.
It's been 20 years Daisy, and it still hurts :'(
Spaced!
more people need to hear how bad the prequels are
From their release up until around 2015, the general consensus seemed to be that they were bad movies.
But then, after the newer ones started to come out, all the kids who grew up with the prequels and were now old enough to make their voices heard online started to reevaluate them with nostalgia goggles, and the overall narrative started to shift.
@@shelbyvillerules9962
Exactly spot on. In 10 to 15 years time, the discourse will inevitably shift again to elevate the new movies. Try telling a Star Wars fan that, though, and they’ll deny that inevitability all day like it didn’t already happen with the prequels, which are still the worst movies in that series anyway.
@@shelbyvillerules9962 If you only consume garbage you think that that's good. Young people think that Star Wars are supposed to be the bad movies from the prequels and not really well done films. And the discourse online really changes it with people saying they love the prequels, Hayden acting.
The new trilogy is even worse. It doesn't even feel like Star Wars.
@@dimitrezeThe prequels are the original soulless cash grab.
His description of the lead up to the Phantom Menace sounds like the opposite of what happened before a New Hope. The little lad had a rough time as well as I recall.
Jake Lloyd, yes. A number of star wars actors have said that they disliked being involved with the franchise. Most famously Harrison Ford. While he loved filming the Indiana Jones films and enthusiastically signed up for the new ones, he never really liked Star Wars and agreed to Force Awakens on the condition his character was killed off. Even Ewan McGregor said he didn't much like Phantom Menace, despite previously being a big Star Wars fan going into it.
Not to forget Denis Lawson, who not only had his voice over-dubbed by someone else in the original 1977 film but his name was spelled incorrectly in the credits.
Also John Boyega has had some pretty harsh words to say about the franchise, mostly about how his and Kelly Marie Tran's characters were sidelined in the sequels
In fairness to Dave Prowse he wasn't in the suit when Darth Vadar ran, as Darth Vadar doesn't run and he wasn't in the suit when he fought, in the same way Alec Guinness wasn't in Obi Wan's costume when he fought as that was done by stunt men.

They were locked together stabbing each other on the love handles, trails of blood coming out, stabbing so fast and furiously yet having little mutual effect. My guess is that he really was, but most of his scenes were cut.
When the bit about the gift came on, I had already lowered my expectations as to what it could be... but a fucking stencil set, man?? :D
Good Lord, this was amazing to listen to. I've never had so much fun cleaning my kitchen and laughing my ass off 😂😂
Does anyone know if the full length version of this discussion between Richard Herring and Peter Serafinowicz is available anywhere?
No one answered you.
It's RHLSTp podcast.

I felt comparable levels of disappointment at the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark. I was so excited, but there came a point (about 10-15 mins in) where I thought 'oh shit, is this a bad movie?'. The Sopranos is one of the greatest things ever to grace a moving screen big or small, so it really made me wonder wtf had happened in the intervening years. Strong parallels with what Peter is talking about here.
The Phantom Menace was the first time that Star Wars fans had to confront the reality that these movies being good is not a guarantee.
Kids love a trade embargo classic 😂😂😂😂
This was such a revealing conversation. I saw it live at RHLST as a double bill with Rob Delaney. Best £10 I ever spent.
You shot me in the bollocks, George
I just love this guy. What a talent !
Isn't he wonderful
One of my favourite RHLSTP moments. xxx
Sebulba had more lines in the final cut than Darth Maul...
Sebulba ALWAYS wins!
This is great wish I’d seen it earlier. I was also at one of the first shows in Manhattan and the audience reaction was the same as told here. Reaction to the first show of Episode II in Manhattan was no better - when the third Anakin & Padme “overdone romantic vista” came on people started laughing - a girl next to me turned to her friend and said “I didn’t know it was supposed to be funny”.
Same. Saw them in the UK, and was so totally underwhelmed by it all. The sabre fights were fun, if absurd, but the rest was a stark reminder why Empire Strikes Back was so good: Lucas didn't direct it.
It almost saddens me that they get so much adoration from the kids who'd never seen a Star Wars film before the prequels. I can only imagine they watched them at home, because they sure as hell weren't in the audience at the cinema when they first came out, because the amount of sarcastic laughter and pained groans would have severely coloured their experience.
@@peterclarke7240 So you're saying viewing a film without a bunch of people's biases colouring your viewing experience allows you to appreciate the film? Who woulda guessed.
@@LordVader1094 I keep forgetting you apologists are actually real.
At the ages of 9 and 12, I saw Episodes II & III in the theater back when they came out, and I really can’t describe how deeply embarrassed I felt being there anytime Anakin and Padme shared a scene together and the audience openly laughed. Same thing with the infamous “NO” from Darth Vader. Those movies were so humiliating to witness that it actually reinforced my general avoidance of movie theaters forever. Not even kidding. It was excruciating.
Thanks for sharing - unfortunately seems to have been a common experience.
When I worked on one of the versions of "The Force Unleashed" George Lucus sent us all gifts as well.
I got a George Lucus action figure.
And when I worked on "The Clone Wars" game (Which is awful) He sent us this cheap $2 wind up toys of that droid that explodes when Luke buys it.
It was still nice of him though, No one else ever sent us gifts.
don't understand why he's 'renowned' for doing it though.
14:20 - Sadly, his life was crippled by that role as he was verbally annihilated by many and consequently contemplated suicide heavily.
I know is it just me or Serafinowicz doesn't really take it seriously.
It wasn't the role that his life was crippled by, it was all of the sexually frustrated prequel hating incels that took their anger out on him that was the cause of his depression.
@@knightwarrioranimations9656 He probably doesn't know those details.
@@jakearmitage7811 You like the prequels?

Do you want me to come? I can come over Fran. Fran, I'm coming.
Oh my god, that was him!? Awesome!
Hey, You look Frantastic.
Prequels made it abundantly obvious how limited star wars was formula wise, and these new disney shows and movie's have further proven that. Its not star trek, its not expansive, its a very simple space opera that theyve managed to utterly destroy
It really worked well as a simple trilogy. Oh well….
You've encapsulated this perfectly. The best Star Trek is immeasurably better written the best Star Wars.
People look back on Star Wars with rose tinted spectacles, but the only film that was objectively good was Empire Strikes Back.
I just found an article that said a bit more about the stencil incident.
And it sounds like it was actually meant to be a form of *payment* for a second day of filming. LOL
"The actor also does not have fond memories of Lucas himself, a filmmaker he claimed is not "a director of actors" and a storyteller more interested "in stuff and effects." The British-born thespian also took issue with his unusual payment for the gig, saying he was even gifted a set of "Star Wars" stencils from Lucas for returning for a second day of unpaid work."
Peter Serafinowicz is absolutely brilliant
