Adam Savage and Fon Davis Talk About Working on Star Wars!

  • Adam sits down with his friend and former colleague Fon Davis of Fonco to reminisce about working on special effects for the Star Wars prequels, with all its moments of triumph, tedium and terror. Adam also presents a classic example of ILM modelmaking: a T11 Skyhopper maquette he made ... that (spoiler alert!) George Lucas unfortunately didn't like.

The interesting thing for model makers like me that work on kits that aren't studio scale sized is trying to replicate greeblie detail that looks "right" when there isn't anything quite right in size or shape.
For instance, when adding details to the 1999 Eagle for Series 2, Brian Johnson's guys added stuff to the models. I tried to emulate those added bits on a half scale MPC Round 2 kit which had the Series 1 details. The original bits appeared to be from 1/35 Tamiya armor and 1/72 (probably Airfix) aircraft kits. So for my added details I used 1/72 to 76 armor bits and 1/144 airplane bits to replicate what my research showed. Fun stuff.

slight problem... if they over exposed the tie fighters in Star Wars... then they must have over exposed everything else... why wasn't there a color change in... say.. the X-wings or Millennial Falcon, etc... And why when the special editions came out did the Tie Fighters look the same color as the originals. The Special Editions were completely redone... like the battle scene at Death Star.

This is so hilarious! Because as an engineer we always bitch and moan that greebles don't make any engineering sense! It's obvious that its done by artists and not engineers. And the long pipe and little box is exactly that :D
We'd either run the conduit under the hull and through the hull into the box. Or control it using RF, assuming that box had to be there, because it woud make sense to keep it in the cluster :D

I don't know, by showing this T-11, someone somewhere might just contact you so that it can become a canon thing. If nothing else, chuck it over to EC Henry and he'll give it some extra lore, and he'll chuck it over to a buddy and make a nice computer rendering with all the colors and blinking lights and whatnot, maybe even have it screaming down some canyons on Tatooine.

geeks, geeking out. so much fun. For me it was removable disk drives platters so large that when you wrapped your arms around them your fingers wouldn't meet. these platter stacks (10? platters) would go into a washing machine sized cabinet attached to the mainframe by a flat ribbon cable wider than your spread fingers.
At DECUS Wizard sessions stories were told of configurations still running after earthquakes had separated the raised floor. A different kind of geeking out. so much fun.

A part of me wishes I had gotten into model making as a profession, after watching one of these videos. But it quickly becomes more and more clear that it can't possibly be all Star Wars and Star Trek model making...a lot of the time it's probably just horribly tedious, long hours of deadline terror...mixed with bouts of "Why did I pick this line of work?" 🤣
Very cool to listen to some of the guys responsible for the details in movies that have brought me so much entertainment and joy. I love to see more interviews with some of the 'greats' of the model making world. That would be fantastic. Cheers!
    Edit:
I think I read somewhere that George Lucas was an avid hot-rod fan and that a lot of the designs for personal vehicles took their design themes from cars of his era. Also that the Tie Fighter design is based on the rear axle of a drag racing car. I don't know if that is true, but I really want to believe it is.

My introduction to the small pieces of tech protruding from various machines and crafts came from early Marvel comics. Kirby and the guys did an awesome job of making things look both foreboding and functional. I can really appreciate the difference between the Trek and Wars approach to this. Wars had everything with a "just used yesterday" appearance, like a bus in Manhattan. Trek was often "white room clean."

Growing up I thought something like ILM was the ultimate goal for me in life. Growing up east coast it was tough to view what I needed to do. I got into photography and got a BFA in graphic design. I helped pioneer the CGI lab at my college. I worked for a game company that had contracts with Lucasfilm, Paramount, New Line; I went to the Skywalker ranch. The day came when I lead from a west coast studio offered me a job on the spot to work on Star Trek Voyager, and I turned it down. I had a new house and new baby; another guy they did take was out of work again in six months. I guess I'll always wonder about the career I turned my back on, or perhaps I dodged a bullet.

Okay? So what color are the TIE fighters? I always figured it was a Luftwaffe blue-grey, but…..

That Tie Interceptor looks so nice ... I'm a bit bias as the Tie Interceptor is my favourite Tie fighter. Love the videos about model making and the stories from ILM are great.

Also I think someone needs to get Adam to build a machinen Krieger (sorry for spelling) kit or 2. They are right up his ally for quality and the uniqueness.

This was WAY too short. Could have been 10x as long and I'd still be watching.

I remember when the special editions came out, I rented the original movies (in VHS tape) the day I was going to see the corresponding movie just to have a fresh frame of reference for the changes

He touched the part of the model where the paint was wet to make you re-do something and learn to focus on it. A very subtle "wax on/wax off" kind of sneaky lesson.
