Not sure if anyone mentioned this but you have to keep in mind that the game happened outside the approved Test window which meant that clubs teams weren’t required to release their players. The top US players in Europe weren’t there but the best players in NZ were because their contracts are through the National Team, not their clubs. I was at this game and while I loved the opportunity to see some of the best players in the world, this was simply a training session and an opportunity to make money for the All Blacks. Another thing to remember is that the entire Washington Metropolitan area is a hub for ex-pat’s. A guy who played for the US in the 1991 World Cup was there supporting the AB’s because he’s originally from NZ. That’s part of the reason why there were so many AB jerseys in the stands.

The highest ever score in a rugby match was in a game in Belgium on 8th February, 2015:
    Royal Kituro 356 - 3 Soignies
The circumstances were a very unusual as stated here:
"The referee who was allocated to the match failed to show up and after an hour delay a number of their players decided to leave. This left Soignies short on player numbers and the following 80 minutes was just Royal Kituro scoring 56 tries and 38 conversions as Soignies carried out their own protest at the no show from the ref by just standing by and letting Royal Kituro score."
In a world cup game the highest score was New Zealand 145 - 17 Japan 1995

My biggest question is how much were those guys paid to wear those ugly red and yellow boots?
Knocking someone over is not a tackle.
To be tackled you MUST be held when you hit the ground. Not even bothering to wrap while 'tackling' is a penalty. Attempting to wrap and failing to do so isn't.

I know this was 5 months ago but I don't see any other comment mentioning this fact. Rugby used to be about the 15 men on the field with 7 subs used in case of injury only. These days it's a 23 man game (there are 8 subs now). That means each player has a role to play on the field. There are no first choice and 2nd choice players. A great example of this is the springbok front row. They play about 45min then they are replaced by arguably a better front row. It's all about strategy these days.

  • @wayneblackwell239
    @wayneblackwell239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Hate to tell you this but that was mainly a 2nd rank NZ Team with a mix of players coming back from long injury breaks and those that have very little game time in test Rugby The bench or subs as you call them were made up of potential 1st ranked players and returning injured players. There were at least 10 players that missed out in this game that would normally be in the first sting Team allowing the coaches to see what upcoming players can do at test level.

    • @mahakicp

Agree with that, AB team made up of 2nd or 3rd string players needing game time. Eagles need to find its DNA and play to its strengths. Add a bit of American football mongrel and athleticism. You have a bigger pool to draw from. One day perhaps?

The reason the 2014 game wasn't as high scoring was because it was a PR campaign to promote rugby in the USA. Whereas in this game, the AB's goal was too reach the tonne. Some of the ABs sub in this game are in the starting XV for the ABs. Technically you're still in the field of play if the part your body that crosses the plane of the touch line hasn't touched the ground. Try watching USA vs Scotland 2018.

While this wasn't a full-strength Abs side, the U.S were missing I think ten of it's best players. A significant number anyway. NZ can afford to leave a bunch of first-choice starters out due to our depth. There's now ay the U.S.A should have been in this position against us. A big drop-off for them between first and 2nd choice.
The 2nd U.S try - he grounded the ball before his legs were grounded outside the field of play. So the try stands.

You also need to remember that in the history of rugby…USA have only returned to rugby for a day while NZ All Blacks have been playing since the dawn of rugby to NZ… The Eagles have improved since the last encounter, though you wouldn’t think it…but they have.
NZ All Blacks play a very different rugby to a lot of the global teams, where the ABs play a fast flowing game to not only accommodate the changing rules, but to entertain the crowd. USA is running with the growth and development of rugby, but for now is in the catch up phase of development.
On the sevens circuit, team USA are no slouch and have done really well. This is where all All Blacks usually start, in the world sevens tournaments…stick with the boys, and the game, and you’ll be glad you did..👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😂

Don't be too downcast, Blake. Six of the Eagles best couldn't play because they were playing in Europe. This is because the game was outside the international rugby window and the European clubs didn't have to release their US players. Sure, the All Blacks were resting some players or bringing some back from injury via subbing off the bench but we have crazy depth. Richie Mo'unga (10), Beauden Barrett (23?) and Damian Mackenzie (15) have all played as the All Blacks first five-eighth (10) (pretty much equivalent to gridiron's quarterback). And that's not counting Jordie Barrett, Beauden's brother, who would normally be playing as fullback (15).

I believe the USA team have improved and doing better now. Japan also has improved hugely and now are a respectable side. Getting thumped as a noobie side by either The All Blacks (New Zealand) or the Springboks (South Africa) is not as big a deal as the scores may appear, it is a great learning experience as long as they don't just give up and keep trying. In future games you can measure the improvement of your side by the narrowing (to be hoped anyway) of the scoring gap.

    Hey Blake, Good vid!
Hate to say this, but I think both the US tries were given to them out of pity by the ref. the 1st one, your Scrumhalf (#9) runs into your Lock (#4) this should have been deemed as interference - it's a harsh law, but it was overlooked. The 2nd one, I think he hit touch before he dotted down, in other, closer games, they would have spent ages deciding and viewing it from multiple angles - here they were just "I don't see any reason not to" - ultimately, it'll make very little difference to the game.
Also, for the sake of fairness - I think there were 3 marginally forward passes that resulted in NZ tries.... and the ref didn't spot them either.
Look, the US team have a long way to go, but at least they're trying! They will get better as they get more exposure - Argentina used to be in the same boat, as did Japan. Now both of those teams (although still considered minnows) can actually hold their own in a game, so it's not all doom and gloom.

The USA does have a plan to become competitive, but I think it is at least a decade away from bearing any real fruit. It's called American Raptors and they take college age athletes and some former pro athletes who are young enough and switch them from Football, Wrestling, Basketball, etc to Rugby. I think Odell Beckham's cousin Terron is either there now or he graduated from it and got picked up by MLR.

A mate went over a few times to the states in the late 80’s, early 90’s to try and get high schoolers interested in the game of Rugby. His said the kids loved it as the game flowed better the US football. He said the only thing was there wasn’t the Adult interest to get high school league going. The college lads and lasses getting into rugby is a good thing but it’s the 8,9 and 10 year olds that start play now will be the one that make the jump up the would tier system. I reckon it will take another 10 to 15 years before America is a tier 1 country.

@@chuckyboy6977 The major problem is that Colleges in the US pay large scholarships for sports, but Rugby is not high on that list (if on it at all), so most people will choose the free college playing American Football than being at University anyway and playing Rugby. As soon as Rugby becomes a viable scholarship option it will take a lot of high calibre athletes from the other US sports. Until then it's going to be mostly drop outs from other sports, which is still a bigger and better talent pool than they had, but still not on tier 1 level.

So if the game is growing in US as they say, I am sure better players and better depth will be coming through.
