Special Rivets for Soft Materials

  • When it comes to fastening softer materials like plastic or fiberglass, the common rivets used for sheet metal often do not hold adequately (rivet can pull through). Components like plastic wing tips and rubber engine baffles in Experimental aircraft need a special rivet that has a unique set of "petals" for holding power rather than the single "ball" usually found with metal holding rivets. Watch as we demonstrate these special rivets in action with softer materials.

hey, just want to add that if you needed a rivet nut not just a rivet, look at McMaster-Carr for Rivet Nuts for Plastic and Composites. Thanks for the video!

I just came across this video looking for info.. I have a kayak with a detached plastic seat.. these petal rivets pulled thru the plastic anyway..I don’t think the manufacturer put washers behind the surface on these rivets.. they sent me a new seat and the pieces that attach to the seat then to the boat, along with rivets AND washers…funny they didn’t seem to do that in the first place…now to find a tool..

Could you say what company you got these "petal" rivets from with washers ?

Hello Jon, Thank you very much for explanation and share this knowledge with other people. I have seen many video's of your hand and they are all excellent and disapprove to by critical as show by some people and am glad that you are still going on. I have a Question: Why are the wings and rudder but also the plastic cover you just show not filled with foam so when they are solid they better prevent. Nevertheless thank you again and have a nice day and many save landings !!

Hello. What would be the rivet nut appropriate for fiberglass?

I need to rivet some hard cardboard type material to metal which covers a panel on my car. It was originally riveted, Can i just use some washers on top with these rivets to stop it pulling through the card.

The more delicate aircraft materials I'm shown, the more I wonder if my fat sausage fingers should be trying to make an airplane...
