  • I give you a great cheap solution to install rivet nuts or threaded nuts without the use of expensive tools, also a great solution if you need to instal a nutsert in a tight space that your tools won't fit in.

    To the right tools commenting, "get the right tool." Sure thing, that is best practice nearly always. Being able to make do and get things done will serve most people better. If $ is such a non issue, why not pay someone else to do the whole job for you? Why did you even watch the clip? I have 2 rivnuts to set and don't foresee more anytime soon. As such I found this clip helpful, and am thankful that some people take the time to be constructive. Yes I could have figured it out for myself, however this saved me time. SO saved me $ twice.

    • @Jim-Farmer

    Can you get 4, 1/2" rivet nuts to hold 9000 pound rated trailer hitch (straight line pull) in a Ram truck frame? I was looking at a front hitch where install instructions want you to drill a large side hole 1.25 inches to put the hitch bolt and bolt support block inside the frame. Thought a rivet nut would be a nice idea, but I bet that exceeds the rivet nuts strength.

  • @SoulDaddy33
    @SoulDaddy33 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doesn't work for me. the rivnut spins in the hole when the bolt is torqued so the bolt ends up being driven further through the rivnut. I can't drill a hole tight enough in sheet metal for the rivnut to not spin. If the hole is large enough for the rivnut to go through, it will just spin and the bolt won't cause it to swell. What am I doing wrong?

    1 (Longer!) bolt.
    1 Threaded Bar Connection Nut.
    1 Washer..
    .
    The long Connection Nut spreads the load and stops the bolt thread stripping or the bolt snapping when used for multiple larger Rivnuts.
    .
    Long nut on the bolt, washer, Rivnut.
    .
    Tack the nut up to the Rivnut.
    Hold the bolt still.
    Turn the nut.
    Count the turns on a test piece to determine the correct rotation
    (A marker line on the nut is useful for this)
    .
    A high tensile bolt is best.

    I'm surprised you didn't make the hole a little undersized, so the splines on the rivnut grab the sheet metal more strongly as it flares out. The biggest problem with these things is the way corrosion of the bolt in the hole makes it harder to remove the bolt years later. If the rivnut spins as you try to rotate the bolt out, it's frustratingly difficult to get the bolt out, especially if you can't easily get at the other end. These are designed for poor access to one side, otherwise you'd simply use a nut on the other end.

    • @arnmar8850
      @arnmar8850 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The splined area is to facilitate the nutsert to crush. If you are concerned about removing the bolt years later, use anti seize compound.

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arnmar8850 We're going to agree to disagree on that point. The vertical splines are there to prevent the rivnut from easily spinning, which is the most common problem with these things. As the rivnut crushes, those splines bite into the sidewall of the sheet metal, helping to fix it in place so the bolt can be broken free. Vertical splines make it harder to crush, not easier.

    • @arnmar8850
      @arnmar8850 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spelunkerd The nuts are made of aluminum. There is no strength to keep them from spinning. If you watch the video again you will see the area where the nut compresses are where the splines are located.

    1. Why exactly do you need a rivnut if you are going to bind them together permanently?
    2. The pilot hole diameter should be the plain one and not the knurled one. The slightly increased diameter of the knurling is to provide for a tight fit of the rivnut in the drilled hole.

    • @TheRoadhammer379
      @TheRoadhammer379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was an example of the clamping force. Rivnuts are squeezed, the knurling is not part of the holding force
