    I didn’t include “Doctorin The TARDIS” for three reasons:
    1 - no cast member was involved, therefore it was “fan made”
    2 - I hate the song
    3 - my video, my rules 😂

      I loved Doctorin the TARDIS. The punchy Who theme plus the samples of Davros and the Daleks... but hey, each to their own... Music video was rubbish though...
      Oh, and Orbital's version of the Who theme... love it. There's a video on TH-cam with them playing at Glastonbury and the last track of their set is the Who theme. It gets better because Matt Smith is up on stage with them, on keyboard too I might add. You know Doctor Who is cool when 100,000 people are screaming and cheering it on at a concert. Check it out.

    Great job as always. Wait... the BBC turned a blind eye to the Jon Pertwee one? BBC, what have you done?? Dear god, man! We could've had such a contemporary song! The dark tones with Pertwee's narration in a neatly tuned remix is just what everyone would ask for Christmas. I'm sad now... I'll just leave and... cross the void beyond the mind after that. :'(

    • @JayDragonarcProductions
      @JayDragonarcProductions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BBC never liked the idea of Who going musical ever. Keff McCulloch pitched his 1950's covers from Delta and the Bannermen as an album after production and the answer was a flat-out nope.

    • @ReversedPolarity
      @ReversedPolarity 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JayDragonarcProductions yeah, one would think so... but It's not a huge loss if Who isn't musically-inclined though, just a bit disappointing when there's so many incredible fanmade remixes on youtube as standalone songs and there's such potential in other media platforms too, like videogames, and we don't get to explore any of that in greater detail. At least there's still comics (the rebooted versions have been great), audios, animations, and the tv show keeps building up on its huge library of stories. But if they don't want to go musical (which could be understandable), videogames should be the next way to go imo. With the right team on-board, I think they could give more life to the world in the show but, alas, we have to wait for the right opportunity to arise... :(

  • @GordonHudson
    @GordonHudson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting bit of trivia for you Josh. Doctor in Distress featured Justin Hayward and John Lodge from the Moody Blues, who were big Doctor Who fans. In 1969 when the Second Doctor was banished to Earth they wrote a song called "Gipsy (of a Strange and DistantTime)" which seems to be about the Doctor at that point in his story. They have denied this, but if you overlay that track and the original Delia Derbyshire theme (and adjust for the slightly different tempo) tune the structures match up and you could probably make a reasonable mashup of it. Its an interesting song and worth a listen.

    I wouldn't say the B-side to Tovey's single is 'disturbing', it's just a crush which many young teenagers have, longing for that older boy/young man or older girl/young woman. Nothing sinister about it. Most of us experienced it growing up.

I still have it today proudly in my record collection. It's cheezy, but I still love it as it brings me back to those early days of my obsession with Doctor Who. Remember this was a time when it was hard to collect anything Doctor Who. Hell, I even kept a photo I took of a billboard advertising Doctor Who on my local PBS Tucson Arizona station.

    My favorite Doctor Who inspired - INSPIRED, not performed by any cast member - is Saved By Zero by The Fixx. Back in 1983 when it came out, The Fixx were going to play at a college in a nearby town. One of the DJs for the major rock and roll station in my city was going to go and interview them, and was wanting to ask some questions from fans. I managed to call in, probably because they weren't that big a deal in Central Texas, and told him that I had heard that Saved By Zero was inspired by Doctor Who. He asked how I had heard that, and I told him there was a rumor in the Whovian fandom that it was. He told me that I should probably call back the next week because he didn't think that would make it on air. When I called him back the following week, he said he asked. He said the band member he was interviewing seemed startled by the question way out here in Texas. He then said that it was, indeed, inspired by Doctor Who.

    Another great video, Josh, I seriously love these latest videos where you'd looking into different areas of the Doctor Who merchandise (maybe an overview of the Target novels, for years before VHS and DVDs, the only way us vintage fans could relive early adventures). I'm not a fan of Doctor Who-related records either, they're pretty terrible, yet fascinating at the same time.
    (By the way, I'm too lazy to do some quick Google research, but I'm guessing the record cover shown at 3:08 is from a later re-release - it has the 1980's era DW logo despite the song being from the Pertwee era, and it has "BBC Records and & Tapes" on it, despite the Beeb not originally being involved with it. Also - look carefully - the blue light on top of the TARDIS is missing. ...Jus' sayin')

    The “Not So Old” song is actually quite beautiful as a piece of music, I find. Certainly, if you tune out the queasy-making implications of the lyrics, I find it very nice to listen to. I think that (again, meaning aside) I like it best out of the lot.
    And while it certainly wouldn't be made today, it's not like the lyrics are *inherently* morall objectionable, they just lend themselves to that kind of reading. After all, while the opposite is wrong on many many levels, it is very much a fact of life that teenage girls can get crushes on grown men (movie stars and singers being the classic example). And the girl is pleading through his song because the man, quite rightly, has told her "no way, you're much too young, sorry" when she asked. She is, what's more, pleading in a way that makes it clear she understands that it would be wrong for them to get together *now*.
    At any rate, it's not quite the same thing, but shouldn't you have mentioned the times that the new series' soundtracks included songs? “The Long Song” from ‘The Rings of Akhaten’ and “Silence is All You Know” in ‘A Christmas Carol’ come to mind, couldn't tell you if there are any more. (The various choral themes like the Daleks' music or “Vale Decem” shouldn't count, I think.)

    Out of these "Who is the Doctor?" with Jon Pertwee is my favorite. That's good fun. The GoGo's one is OK I suppose. I've actually never heard Roberta Tovey's or Frazer's songs all the way through to be honest. The Doctor Who in Distress one though is just so cringey and terrible that is most certainly the worst one ever. After watching your video, I decided to search for Doctor Who songs and found two songs that are bizarrely catchy: "Jo is Making a Thing" and "We Killed the Doctor Dead!". They're from the Big Finish story "The Scorchies" in the Companion Chronicles audio range where Jo Grant takes on the Scorchies, an alien race that inhabit puppets and use their television show to travel from planet to planet and destroy or enslave the native populations. The songs and lyrics were composed by Richard Fox and Lauren Yason, and sung by Jo Grant herself Katy Manning and Melvyn Hayes who plays the Scorchies.

    How could you miss out Doctorin' the TARDIS -- easily the best of them all and actually quite a good song in its own right.

    i personally think some of the intro themes could warrant the charts anyway (noting 7 and 12, maybe 11)

    'I Am The Doctor' by Jon Pertwee is 100% my fave of these. I want to check out Frazer's songs after seeing this.

    I do agree, but the best out of the bin is Jon Pertwee's ''Am I The Doctor?'' I am still trying to find out of the Master Tape exists anymore.

    At least the story soundtracks more than make up for these. Especially the 11 disc 50th anniversary soundtrack and The Invasion.

    Right, I'm gonna go through this here:
    Go-Gos... meh.
    Tovey - Actually like this just for the fact that it's meant to be a lovely not-so-serious tribute to Who. The rest all tried to be serious, this is just meant to be a nice musical jaunt.
    Frazer - It's not a good song at all, but I wonder what he could've done if he had been given a good tune.
    Who is the Doctor? - Funnily enough, I remember this well. Pertwee's confidence, the lyrics may not make all of good sense but he sells them. And the instrumentation is fab. IIRC John Levene also did a tribute version of it many years back to honour Jon at a con.
    Doctor in Distress - The singing and lyrics is terrible as is the video... but on the plus side, we got five wonderful seconds of Ainley and Courtney sitting next to each other. And the instrumentation isn't all that bad in isolation (gotta give Hans Zimmer his credit there) so not good but not as bad as people make it out.
    The worst Doctor Who inspired song of all-time? The Nerf Herder song that Disney XD used for their Doctor Who trailers. That song melted my brain.
    Best song? Oh, I don't know... I want to say Who is the Doctor? but as people point out, it's less a song and more a music instrumentation with narration.

    I agree with you when it comes to the cringyness of these songs but I do kinda like the one Pertwee was involved with. Also I'll admit that Doctorin' the TARDIS is my guilty pleasure when it comes to cheesy Doctor Who songs 😂

    I actually have a bit of appreciation for "Doctor In Distress"...mind you, I'm not saying the song's any good, it's downright every bit as awful as people claim it to be...but I admire that such an effort was undertaken to save the program from the BBC who was stopping at nothing to kill it off...
    And thanks to that plus other efforts, we wound up with another four seasons...that's well more than what Star Trek's oft-lauded letter-writing campaign managed to get for TOS (it garnered just ONE more season from that...)
    So...I say F for quality but A for effort on that one...
    Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks this way but eh....

    No mention of Doctorin the Tardis? Number one single in 1988. Samples from the Gensis of the Daleks LP means the single technically features recordings by cast members.

    While Doctor in Distress is...(for lack of a diplomatic term) garbage, it has a charm and you can blame it on it being the eighties. But seeing as it's a hiatus year this year, if I catch wind of ANYONE trying to do anything like this again, I will march to the recording studio and physically restrain them, do not test me.

    I except your reason for not liking “Doctorin The TARDIS” But have you ever seen it played at a convention party. It is up there with YMCA, Time Warp and all the other cult dance songs, Watching 30 odd men & women in costume, Stumping up & down Clapping their Hands and yelling HEY, with this song playing, is mind blowing. This is why it is a fan favourite

    If we’re talking Doctor Who music then there’s two I HAVE to mention:
    1) The third part of Big Finish’s Doctor Who and The Pirates has lots of songs in it with Colin Baker singing. It’s cheesy but fun pirate shanties.
    2) Even though they’re not officially by the BBC, you have to check out President Romana here on TH-cam. Personally my favourite songs from her are Last Words, Don’t Tell Me the Rules, Thirteen and A Time Lord’s Trial

    Still weird to think that Hans Zimmer contributed to Doctor in Distress. Played the entire thing on a Fairlight II synthesisor - which (fun fact) was the same brand of synth used to compose the Terminator 2 Judgement Day soundtrack.
