  • Who is the best Mr. Darcy, who is the best Elizabeth and which is the best adaptation of Pride and Prejudice? The documentary follows the history of adaptations, starting with sir L. Olivier, ending with Keira Knightley as Lizzie and Matthew McFeyden as Darcy, or even a free Bollywood adaptation with Aishwarya Rai (Bride & Prejudice). Andrew Davies (screenwriter for the 1995 adaptation with Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle) talks about the magic of these characters.

      It's the same with me! There will never be another dramatized version for me other than the 1995 BBC version. It's perfection. And...aside from Darcy and Elizabeth, my third, most loved character in the book and this greatest filmed version is Mr Bennet. What a marvelous man he is! I love, in the book, how, after Darcy and Elizabeth are married, he gets away to Pemberly when he is in dire need of sanity and intelligent company! I feel Mr Bennet is much overlooked as a great character. And my bluray, restored version of this version is on its way to me. HAPPINESS!

      It's because the writer/producer/director didn't try to add anything to the story and didn't subtract anything from it, either. They took their time telling it from the beginning through the middle and the end. American audiences especially really got a feel for what it was like to live in England as a "gentleman's daughter" in the early 1800s. And the issues that involved the people at that time are the same ones that still involve us today: the "battle" between the sexes, sexual attraction, marriage, money, and hoping for a happy, full and useful life.

    • @ashanastuder7334
      @ashanastuder7334 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love how they convey so many emotions with their expressions! 😍 They're so subtle sometimes that you might not get them if you're not paying attention or are used to blatantly obvious acting. But if you really pay attention, you can almost read their minds and their conflicting emotions, even though they don't say a word. Like how Lizzie looks at herself in the mirror at different times during the series and how she reacts differently to her reflection each time. It literally and figuratively mirrors the thoughts that she's reflecting on at the time. The scenes with just Colin and/or Jennifer emoting are so magical! ❤️

      I prefer the 1995 version too. But since not everyone cares toi much for details which are completely modern for a Regency period story (non-existant hairdoes, gentlemen seeing ladies in underwear, no bonnets) and don't care about class difference or historical facts of other times, I believe the 2005 version is a good way of making people aware of English literature and might feel the curiosity to connect with Jane Austen and other great authors. And I did like the music and scenery. But then I knew the story in detail so I didn't find the lack of development of the characters a problem. Had I not known the story, as rushed as it was, well it would have failed tremendously in narration.

  • @quitequiet1

    I believe that the 1995 version is really the best. I’ve only seen snippets on the 1967 version and the 1980 version so I probably cannot give a very comprehensive opinion of them. I know that the 1980 version has its followers but based on the proposal scene that I saw, I do prefer Jennifer Ehle’s interpretation to that of Elizabeth Garvie’s. Mr. Darcy of the 1980 version I found very unhandsome which actually works against him no matter how good of an actor he is.
    The 1940 movie version has the great Laurence Olivier and a very charming Greer Garson, but the screenplay deviated quite a bit from the novel and though enjoyable can only be regarded as a light comedy coming out of the golden age of Hollywood.
    I enjoyed the 2005 movie when it first came out, but recently I watched all 6 episodes of the 1995 version again and reread the book, and I found the 2005 version really not measuring up. Kiera Knightly gives a spirited performance but probably not so true to Jane Austen and more we’ll suited for modern days audiences. Matthew Macfadyen has his merits but perhaps due to the screenplay and direction comes across as a rather dull Mr. Darcy. The proposal in the pouring rain makes no sense whatsoever except for Cinema dramatics. The sunrise scene was also too contrived.
    I heard that the 1980 version was also very true to the book. I do look forward to seeing it in its entirety one of these days. Though it may be true to its source, it probably lacked the boldness of the 1995 version that made it so appealing to so vast an audience.

    Best Darcy/Best Elizabeth/What Makes Them So Appealing and Irresistible Even Today?
    Well, I think it´s the truth of the adaption in 1995 - with one exception: Lizzy is too beautiful, but she has got the "fine eyes" Jane Austen describes and her wit and warmth.
    In 2005 the adaption with Keira Knightley and Matthew McFeyden is nice, but there are a lot of mistakes, most of them due to our prevailing taste. The worst, the proposal in rain and their come together by dawn. I cannot imagine a proposal in that time with "I love you..." For me it´s pure unadulterated kitsch, not british but american. It´s a pity, because the adaption 2005 is a movie made for cinema. a lot of young people got a wrong impression of the time Jane Austen (Lizzy+Darcy) lived in and their sexual expressions.
    Nevertheless, a nice video with good scenes to compare. certainly it took you a lot of work to produce it. many thanks!

      Matthew McFadden was a cold fish Mr Darcy to me...no brooding or tension, he just looks bored (or constipated) to me. Also, I know they were trying to make their income levels apparent, but really...having livestock roam through the house was just too much! And Bingley’s sister was catty yes, but her costume design (sleeveless) was way too modern. The Greer Garson/Laurence Olivier version got Lady Catherine’s motivation for the confrontation wrong, they played it like she was trying to ascertain if Elizabeth was still interested in marrying Darcy and she was playing matchmaker. The 1995 miniseries follows the book 📖 the closest and is the most faithful version IMO. Nobody does a slow burn like dreamy Colin Firth.

It's the war between two equal people. The dance of desire, love, fascination and hateness. Love wins, but first it must go through a real path through torment. And it makes her even stronger. That make the huge difference.

    As intelligent and perspicacious as Lizzie was, she missed a few clues in the story -- notably Mr. Wickham's concealed villainy. But when she she met Mr. Darcy's sister she noticed the fact that Miss Darcy was not as she had been described to her: Georgiana Darcy had been portrayed to Lizzie as proud and reserved, but Lizzie saw through that and realized the girl was merely shy and self-conscious. Yet Lizzie completely missed the clues that, behind his obnoxious behavior, Mr. Darcy was shy and self-conscious too. He covered it with rudeness and the pretense of superiority... unfortunately. Cannot blame Lizzie for being too angry to recognize -- or sympathize with -- Darcy's discomfort.

    LOL. It's the first romantic comedy. Boy meets girl. Girl hates boy.

    What is fundamentally annoying is that both actors are far too old and also look too old. Elisabeth is far too serene for a 21-year-old (!) and also appears much less attractive and older than Darcy. Her appearance is more like that of a good housewife on a sewing course. No one falls in love purely with intellect, the whole package has to be right. And unfortunately, unlike the book, that's not the case at all. A man like Darcy (Firth is brilliant) is a 10 on the points scale, while the plump, bland Elizabeth from the film is perhaps a 7. A Darcy would never have chosen her. In most Austen films, the men are much more attractive than the women. The 2007 film Persuasion is a real disaster: the drooling female protagonist with the constantly open mouth is almost repulsive, while Elizabeth here is at least just boring. The film's target audience is average women. And they are supposed to believe: I may only be mediocre myself, but I still get the most beautiful man. No, it doesn't work like that. And that's not what Jane Austen meant either.

    The 2006 version was definitely superior. Costumes, Soundtrack, location, cinematography...everything. WAY more realistic looking. The 1995 version looked like a series of pristine sets. The later version captured life in the English countryside better. The only character I liked better in the '95 version was Lydia. I loved McFadden as Darcy.

    i think Jennifer Ehle was much to old for the role....Colin was a perfect Darcy, though....I believe the best Elizabeth was played by Keira Knightly....who was much more age appropriate, as well as an excellent actress.....Actually, McFeyden as Darcy opposite Keira, was also right up there with Colin...

      I'm not sure that Jennifer Ehle's age of 26 "was much too old" for Lizzie's 21.

      I like Keira, but to take the proposal, Elisabeth is not of a kind to spit and almost scream her words to Darcy, why did the director want that?

    • @agatask
      @agatask 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ausfi I think Keira overplayed Elizabeth a bit, which is visible in the proposal and the meeting at Pemberley part. The subtle acting of Jennifer Ehle works much better for me.
