After years of reading the book, and seeing various dramatizations it occurred to me that Lizzie had heard Miss Darcy called "proud" but on meeting her she realized the girl was actually very shy... and that was probably a large part of Darcy's problem. He tells Lizzie that he doesn't know how to recommend himself to strangers - and she doesn't let him off easy, but says it's up to everyone to make the effort. But that explains why he's so devoted to Mr. Bingley's friendship: Bingley is outgoing and liked by everyone, and yet chooses Darcy as his best friend. Darcy proves himself kind at heart and faithful to the people he loves - Lizzie in particular - and they make a brilliant couple: she helps him to come out of his shell and show the world what a kind, generous person he really is. One of my cousins is like that, actually: shy and quiet until you get to know him, and then he's a big tease who "takes the mickey" with people he trusts. His wife is lovely and outgoing and very friendly. She helps bridge the gap between him and other people.
I think the answer is found in Darcy's own confession to Lizzie when they take that last memorable walk. He tells her he was raised in pride and conceit; in other words, he was brainwashed as all the "upper crust" children of that time were, to believe that he must patronize and condescend to lower classes and be forever mindful of his own rank and status with relation to them. In his initial meeting with the Bennet family at the ball he is playing his preconceived part perfectly. So I don't think Darcy was actually in a "shell" of shyness at all, but rather attempting to play a role he was ill suited to perform for his training was being contested by his almost immediate feelings for Elizabeth who was not of his social rank. Therefore, Darcy, rather than being shy, was simply confused by those feelings toward Elizabeth which were at odds with his inculcated beliefs.
I could not agree more with what he says about Colin's voice! I have the same sort of feeling about Dan Stevens (Matthew on Downton Abbey) - wonderful speaking voice as well. Indeed: SO important!!
I’ve seen this series probably 10 times. Just watched the whole thing on Britbox and it was full of scenes and continuations of scenes I have never seen before. It was AMAZING.
Only love this film movie 1995 one greatest favorite film movie. All actors were greatest. And directors did fantastic job on this film. Once watch once , you want watch it again and again. Thank You. Mr. Darcy was very cute and handsome gentlemen.
@Voracious Reader You identify as "Voracious" however I think "VICIOUS" would have been a far better adjective. You've called yourself "crabby" but that also is being far too generous, since both YOUR comments to Pat Stokes and to myself; portray YOU as not only eager to throw online tantrums like a juvenile, but makes you sound psychotic and very much Wicked Witch soon to receive a well deserved bucket of water. Have a nice day, My Pretteeee - IF you can!

How lovely, so the female writers only got excited about Darcy, while the males nobly looked at the bigger picture. I'm sure that's not a generalisation at all.
He mentions speaking voice. My favorite speaking voice of all belongs to Lt. Denny. The sound of his voice and his posh accent still make me weak in the knees!
Good, I'm glad you want to see the 95 version. And I'll echo the nubiana75: you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to! It's the best version of Pride and Prejudice. Possibly the best adaptation of a novel to film. Though Andrew Davies is a god and his other work is remarkable as well!
Did anyone notice the three BAFTA awards, ever so subtle, in the background? He had more awards. Although this does not bring him up to 'god'level (@jitkasuarez) for me, I do agree with you on the admirable level of his other work. He seems to be quite a genius in his profession.
the look of the 2005 P&P is very pretty. I remember watching it on youtube simply to see how it measured up, though I was convinced it would suck. And I was right about the performances. All they're doing is copying the performances of the 95 one. It's super-embarassing to watch. The bbc miniseries is just perfection. But the hollywood one was really very pretty to look at. You're right. Less so the actors than the location etc
Li'l Al, why, oh why? He had to portray a Georgian time nobleman, not a Terminator. By the way, his looks were altered to more masculine already comparing with actual standards of this period...
He went to the gym to shed some weight. Probably didn’t have time to bulk up. He really looked funny before they started filming P&P, chubby and with a mustache:)
This is the best adaptation, perfect in every way...
I don't know how anyone can prefer the 2005 version. The 1995 version is perfection
That's the difference between movies and mini-series....same for the BBC Jane Eyre 1983
Rose Jackson
I know right!? You said it!
Rose Jackson I found the 2005 very disappointing
Tell'em!
They're both perfect, in their own way, incomparable.

+Guinn Berger I always thought Darcy was a classic introvert: stuff & reticent with strangers, warm & open to those with whom he was comfortable.

I don't think Lizzy is shy, quite the opposite, her voice is clear when she wants to speak out.
I think the 2005 version really captured this aspect of Darcy very well.
It was as much Darcy's great voice as it was his handsome looks which got me hooked lined and sinkered!
Y su mirada,tan intensa.

And you should see it. It's the one most faithful to the book, hence capturing its atmosphere. The 2005 version is purely P&P through Hollywood lense.
"couldn't have Darcy with chubby cheeks.. at least that's what we thought.." LOL
Colin Firth is the best Darcy ever, chubby cheeks and all
I’ve seen this series probably 10 times. Just watched the whole thing on Britbox and it was full of scenes and continuations of scenes I have never seen before. It was AMAZING.
10 times ?.....try 30 !

"and he and jennifer.....got on very well..."
said with a totally straight face.
uh huh - too right they did!!! ;P
Well said! However, in 2005 everyone got together after that show too..
Too bad they didn’t last. Must have been a cute couple.
Colin Firth will be Darcy forever. Even in the book when you read it you're thinking of Colin Firth.
Just as one immediately sees Clark Gable as Rhett Butler whenever you read Gone With the Wind

I could listen to Andrew Davis all day and all night. Everything he says is so engaging and interesting.
Disagree.....all a bit louche.

Matthew Macfayden, and all the other actors, TRY to play Mr Darcy; while Colin Firth IS Mr darcy
No Matthew M was a great Darcy, he unfortunately had to play against Knightley who was awful.
Didn't see the Pride come through in Macfadyen's portrayal of Darcy.
24 years later now
Make that "28".

"I wanted to emphasise the men in this story" Yeah I bet you did, Andrew! 😂
I was surprised to discover he's married.
To a woman.

I object to any kind of comparison.
Ahhh Colin made my ovaries twinkle
~~~LOL~~~ Best laugh I've had in a long time!!!!
Is Andrew Davies saying that Colin Firth's naturally ginger? Or he had it that color for a part? Also I don't remember him in Circle of Friends...
deadSIRENS Didn't capture my heart when I saw it... I shall bring myself to watch it again one of these days, see if anything changes )
Can anyone tell me where this is from? Is it from a DVD extra?
We cant have a ginger darcy
"their memories and foughts" ???!
XD :') love it
Colin Firth should have gone to the gym before this role, if they were going to show so much of his body.
Not one woman who's watched this Pride and Prejudice has any complaints about Mr. Darcy, I'm sorry Colin Firth.
you haven't?!?! You HAVE to!!!!
Colin with ginger hair????? I have to see that!! where????
