The Struggle of Being Gay in Albania

  • Up until the mid-90s if you were openly gay in Albania, you would be sent to prison. Many homosexuals stil face bigotry and violence, even in their own homes.
In the last five years, Albania has seen a dynamic LGBTQ movement. Gay activist have created secret guest houses in Tirana that offer shelter to young homosexuals who have been brutally abused.
VICE Greece traveled to Albania and recorded rare glimpses into the lives of people who have been victimized and neglected because of their sexual orientation in one of Europe's most homophobic countries.

Panic! At The Twenty One Pilots makes no sense, because being gay doesn't not mean you are going to die just from being gay.
People are trying to find cures for cancer because it actually kills people , makes people sick etc.
Straight couples don't affect you right?
So a gay couple wont either.
They are both the same in terms of how a usual relationship matters are.
      The only difference is sex

Friendly reminder that LGBT topics always get an inordinate amount of troll comments because it's an easy group to harass. There's an exactly 0% chance all the hate is genuine. So you might not be interacting with a petty child who thinks two dudes together is icky - it might be a petty child who just wants to get a rise out of you and knows you'll take the bait.

I'd tell all the muslims that hate it in their adopted country to go home. Your average Muslim is glad to be in a nicer country with opportunities to progress, while I'm sure there are some things they dont like. I also have things I dont like about my country, everyone feels this way so why not then.

I know so many people in the community and it breaks my heart to know that a lot of the time, we shun our own in the name of religion or "tradition" *hugs*.
But, even thought I understand where you are coming from, I would be cautious in replying to this person about how we are "cavemen" and primitive. ONLY because Nordic people are notoriously xenophobic and will only get off on us demeaning ourselves.
Again, I understand and feel for your struggle and have often thought that my culture has strides to make, but don't let an Anglo/Nordic/ any other culture who has a history of hating your own allow you to feel worse about your region. Albania had no allies during communism and we were completely isolated we didn't receive any foreign aid because of this. however Yugoslavia (mostly Serbia) received tons of foreign aid and had a booming economy. if you went to Albania in the early two thousands you'd see how Albania was worse of than Africa. today however Albania is essentially the same as the rest of the Balkans. we are also economically growing a lot faster than your country and we are expected to take you over economically. i earn a lot more than 270 a month do to being economically independent and also the average salary has risen to 350.

I feel that there are two categories of "homophobes" in the comment section.
    1. People that seem to hate homosexuals for cultural and often religious reasons. They often resort to explanations such as "morally wrong", it says so (MAYBE I should add) in the Bible. Whereas more detailed explanations about the actual wrongdoing in being gay is lacking.
    2. Trolls.
I'm a straight man myself, but I sincerely believe that being gay is not a choice. They are not hurting you, leave them be.

Thats a magnificent point! I mean sure, there would be some people with masochistic tendencies who perhaps would say they were gay and get something out of it. But considering that it is not that uncommon to be gay in any country, it is incredibly unlikely that all of them would choose to have same sex relationships, and claim that they have been gay as long as they can remember, and do so in a culture where people would hate them. It does not make a single bit of sense.
It would be more reasonable to assume that homosexuality has existed, and deduct that it is very likely that its been a part of human history. And therefore not unnatural, which some in this comment section claims it is

You are disgusted by two men expressing their love ? And you expect science to find a "cure" for their sexual orientation ? You try to make me feel disgusted with this like you using the "porn example" . Well,I can give you lots of "porn examples" with heterosexual content that will make you want to throw up . However .. you miss the point .. I can't feel disgusted by positivity like love whether its between gay or straight people . It's unnatural to hate or even dislike people . You are a human , I'm a human , they are humans . You should be the one to go to therapy and talk about your negativity . People are meant to help the world not fill it with hate and superstition . P.S. many animal species have homosexual behaviour . Dolphins , crocodiles , dogs , cats and the list goes on . It's only natural :P

Thank you to all the straight people sticking up for the LGBT community. You guys are awesome and very secure in your skin. The opposite of love is not hate but fear and those who fear us gays are most likely struggling with their own sexuality as most believe. Gay people never had a choice, we are born this way and more importantly it's genetic, so if it's in your family it most likely isn't the first time. One more thing, if being gay is a choice, why would someone chose to live in fear and risk being ridiculed for the rest of their life? I am a lesbian and wouldn't want it any other way!!

I enjoyed the greek speaking narration too, it was nice to hear Greek and understand what there were saying even though whet they were saying was tragic. I don't know what it is going o take for people to have more empathy and compassion towards others. As a human race we need it. Thank you for the story and those involved in sharing it. Bravo sas!

My image about Albania completely changed after this video. Not because of the content of the video but because of the number of dislikes and absolute hateful comments by Albanians. I do get it that in most countries where homosexuality is illegal or discouraged, it is mostly because of religion and because of old people who are in power and don't want to accept change. But even then the young generation is more open minded. That's why even though the country might be homophobic, lot of people do come out in support of homosexuality, specially young people.
But in case of Albania, it seems like the younger generation is just as backwards like the previous generation. I have never seen so much hate. Where people are writing stuff about killing gays. Wow.

The situation is not as bad as the video tries to portray it. They start by saying Albania is one of the most homophobic country in Europe. True, but not much different to the rest of eastern europe. All of these countries are conservative like that. Gayism is a new thing and mostly come from fucked up social networking and lazy people's life style trying to copy mofos from jung tv and social media. Not in entirety, but almost all Alb gays in that video are idiots by nature. Not saying that gays are idiots, but Gays start from being idiots until it becomes a socially accepted norm. Now, does the average albanian want their kids to grow up as one of these idols? Hell no. So debates and movements start. We are at that stage now. Arrivederci.

Maybe if it were to be shown as even worse than it is people would start making a change. In my opinion it is the same as how it is portrayed here and i say this as an albanian too who has gone there many times. I knew a lesbian in one town that was small and no one talked to them for years who wasnt their thankfully accepting family. In school they were bullied, on the streets people would avoid and stare and talk and do probably worse when i wasnt there to witness it. When i was going to buy something from her because she had a small market on the street i was literally held back because people were worried about me going near a lesbian. Nothings changed and ive witnessed stuff happening to her for 3 years now. Dont ignore the reality of people who are struggling. Everyone deserves the same rights, especially if they arent harming themselves or others. Albania and many other places need to change.

First of all. Albania is not a muslim country, its secular. The Turks brought Islam into the country, today the country knows many religions who by all means live in peace. Communism plays the greater part here. Albania has lived under communism until the 90ies, so people lived under many restrictions, including their sexuality. So it is logical that they have difficulties with same-sex relationships. However, times are changing, more people are travelling abroad and more people are embracing who they are.

And also you did a great job(sarcastically talking) on manipulating the words as you wished and misinforming people! I speak Albanian,Greek and English, so you all can understand that i can clearly translate correctly each word that the Albanian part said, the Greek part said and the English subtitles part said, and most of the time as i was watching the subtitles and the Greek reporter talking, they were passing, let's say it,a hateful message towards my country and most of the things didn't even co-relate with the topic about the struggle that gay people go through in Albania! And an information by a passer-by,i advice you to talk to people that are not a part of a national party, that thing is just stupid and a waste of time..in each country that you will go and ask a national party, you will get the same answer or even worst! And again, stop misinforming people into making them believe the worst things for our country! Anyone that's interested in learning more stuff about the culture, traditions and the way of life of an Albanian, can surely send me and have a conversation with me or you can visit well-trusted and verified websites that talk about those stuffs!
