The language in the song is Sanskrit, one of the oldest language in the world (other being Tamil). This devotional song is a Mantra (or Shloka). They say Mantras are extremely powerful - combined with both the sound elements and the essence of what is being recited, Mantras can transform individuals leading to power and strength. Chanting of Mantras can give us the power for attaining a blissful state and liberation.

This is not completely true. Tandava Natyam is a dance form described in detail in the Natya Shastra written by Bharata Muni. It was indeed first performed by Lord Shiva and can be performed in context of various rasas and bhavas. Only one form of the dance called Rudra Tandavam is performed during the destruction of the universe. I advise you to go through some texts. You can unintentionally spread misinformation.

Tandav is actually the cosmic dance of God Shiva ('the destroyer' in hindu trinity)......this dance is performed by lord Natraj (dancing Shiva) symbolises the destruction and formation of worlds. U can find lord Natraj's idols in dance academies where he is worshipped by dancers

  • @adityasshukla
    @adityasshukla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +211

The dance is called Tandava Natyam (Natyam means dance in Sanskrit). It is covered in GREAT detail by a treatise called 'Natya Shastra'. Lord Shiva was the first to perform the Tandavam and pass on the knowledge to Bharata Muni, who then wrote the text to educate the humankind. All Indian classical dances have roots in this very text.
Unlike popular belief (a lot of comments here too), Tandavam has many forms that involve many bhavas (emotional expressions of the dancer) to evoke 9 rasas (emotional states) in the audience. Rudra Tandavam, a particular form is performed by Lord Shiva when the universe is destroyed for rebuilding. Apart from this form, there are many other forms of Tandavam.
The percussion instrument prominent in Tandavam is called Damaru (cosmic drum), which is beloved to Shiva. The song which forms the background music is a Sanskrit hymn composed in praise of Lord Shiva.
Tandavam is a hard dance to master because of the poses (called karana) and the transitions from one to other pose. No modern dancing institute can formally train a dancer in this dance form. The dancer here, has her own version of Tandavam, since it's nearly impossible to dance as magnificently and godly as Shiva himself.

He did lifted it with his hand for a bit but lord Shiva with his leg thumb applied a little force downward and this hands were stick there. Then he realised how strong was god Shiva and he cried for a year and created this epic mantra which nobody can spell easily. Specially those people who has their own accent. 🙏

I see alot of Bharatanatyam in this. Bharatanatyam (classical form from Tamil Nadu) depicts alot of the spiritual stories of Shiv especially his dance Tandav to depict various emotions like anger, power, redemption, and also some softer bhavs like love and devotion all together. The singer by the way is Shankar Mahadevan, one his best devotional pieces. There is another one by this artist of Shankar Mahadevan's another piece on Durga. also beautiful

The poetry within the composition describing the power of the God Siva is beautiful. Plus the dancer has understood its meaning to bring it into her movement. I loved the way she presented how Siva holds the cosmic balance. Siva is time, Siva is is the spatial dimensions, Siva is energy, Siva is consciousness, Siva is life itself. When she is sitting down and her left land is vibrating while her right hand is moving in a circle, she looks deeply happy. That’s her way of offering her respects and her talents to him. Siva is also a God that is represented half man and woman (along the vertical line if symmetry). That’s why her outfit is also tight around one leg and fluffier (feminine) on the other. The whole Bharatanatyam piece is done exceptionally well by the Ms. chakraborty.

Tandav is the dance of Nataraj, the dance form of Shiva. The strotam she is dancing to is the famous Shiva Strotam, rendered by the legendary Shankar Mahadevan.
The reason you (Efra) were so struck by the percussive aspects of this performance, is because Shiva is the author of the playbook of the drums. He created the verbal notations used by all north Indian percussionists (and similar in the South, but the South has enhanced this notation to a more sophisticated level in Carnatic music), just like sheet music is used by western classical musicians.

About the styles many style require all of it, facial expressions, body posture, but all the dance forms have one thing in common and that is story telling and showing a story in the form of movements. All folk and classical dances convey stories in their own styles, be it the story of gods and goddesses or even common folk tales. That is what makes Indian dances so unique and different.

If you want to enjoy the Stotram please go watch/hear the stotram DO NOT WATCH a reaction video.......Focus on how quickly they pick up the subtle cues and then react to it accordingly. Unlike you they didn't grow up learning about this. Learn to differentiate between someone who is trying to understand India and someone who is Insulting India out of prejudice or Racism. We have immense devotion to Shiv but the same devotion might not be there for someone foreign to our ways. that does no mean they Disrespect us. They might appreciate the art but not have any divine feeling. And that's ok.

He is the Supreme being in Shaivism. Lord Shiva is the all in one divine, who is the protector, creator and destroyer. Shiv Tandav ( the dance you saw) is a hymn composed by Ravan, the demon king of Lanka in praise of Lord Shiva. The most beautiful thing is that the songs and the rythem for the songs or slokas were written thousands of years ago. the songs are so much superior to listen from any other songs from any other religion related songs to. And the dances that are created to accompany the songs are just on another level.

There's a big Shiva Statue in Tandava pose At CERN (Switzerland), home to the Large Hadrom Collider and world's largest research institute of particle physics. A plaque next to it explains its significance with a quote by Physicist Fritjof Capra “The Dance of Shiva symbolises the basis of all existence. At the same time, Shiva reminds us that the manifold forms in the world are not fundamental, but illusory and ever-changing. Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter."
Scientist Carl Sagan was the one who introduced this idea in the West through his show Cosmos. He had said: "Hindu religion is the only one of the world’s great faiths dedicated to the idea that the cosmos itself undergoes an immense, indeed an infinite number of deaths and rebirths. It is the only religion in which the time scales correspond to those of modern scientific cosmology. Its cycles run from our ordinary day and night to a day and night of Brahma 8.64 billion years long. Longer than the age of the Earth or the Sun and about half of the time since the Big Bang. And there are much longer time scales still."

Don't close your eyes, see the glory of mighty shiva. Even death trembles in front of him.
The song is dedicated to great shiva, whose glance is enough to make all the living beings trembles in fear, A single drop of water from his eye is enough to drown the entire universe.

Thats not song that is mantra , this is shiv tandav. Ravana(monster to some) was actually parsing Shiva (God) to gain greater power . Shiv tandav creates energy like no other. Pregnent women listen to it to make there child active and energetic. There are certain mantras which create energy , there are certain mantras which make us calm and relax. Opposite to shiv tandav , Rama(who defeated ravana) also praised Shiva , it's called rudrakshakam mantra . You will find it calm and soothing. People in India who are more rightist hindu listen to shiv tandav while doing exercises. It has its own trance.
