Shiv Tandav Stotram - Lyrics and Meaning in English
    Jatatavigalajjala pravahapavitasthale
    Galeavalambya lambitam bhujangatungamalikam
    Damad damad damaddama ninadavadamarvayam
Chakara chandtandavam tanotu nah shivah shivam
With his neck consecrated by the flow of water that flows from his hair,
And on his neck a snake, which is hung like a garland,
And the Damaru drum that emits the sound "Damat Damat Damat Damat",
Lord Shiva did the auspicious dance of Tandava. May he give prosperity to all of us.
    Jata kata hasambhrama bhramanilimpanirjhari
    Vilolavichivalarai virajamanamurdhani
    Dhagadhagadhagajjva lalalata pattapavake
    Kishora chandrashekhare ratih pratikshanam mama
I have a deep interest in Shiva
Whose head is glorified by the rows of moving waves of the celestial Ganga river,
Which stir in the deep well of his hair in tangled locks.
Who has the brilliant fire burning on the surface of his forehead,
And who has the crescent moon as a jewel on his head.
    Dharadharendrana ndinivilasabandhubandhura
    Sphuradigantasantati pramodamanamanase
    Krupakatakshadhorani nirudhadurdharapadi
    Kvachidigambare manovinodametuvastuni
May my mind seek happiness in Lord Shiva,
In whose mind all the living beings of the glorious universe exist,
Who is the companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king),
Who controls unsurpassed adversity with his compassionate gaze, Which is all-pervading
And who wears the Heavens as his raiment.
    Jata bhujan gapingala sphuratphanamaniprabha
    Kadambakunkuma dravapralipta digvadhumukhe
    Madandha sindhu rasphuratvagutariyamedure
    Mano vinodamadbhutam bibhartu bhutabhartari
May I find wonderful pleasure in Lord Shiva, who is the advocate of all life,
With his creeping snake with its reddish brown hood and the shine of its gem on it
Spreading variegated colors on the beautiful faces of the Goddesses of the Directions,
Which is covered by a shimmering shawl made from the skin of a huge, inebriated elephant.
    Sahasra lochana prabhritya sheshalekhashekhara
    Prasuna dhulidhorani vidhusaranghripithabhuh
    Bhujangaraja malaya nibaddhajatajutaka
    Shriyai chiraya jayatam chakora bandhushekharah
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
Who has the Moon as a crown,
Whose hair is bound by the red snake-garland,
Whose footrest is darkened by the flow of dust from flowers
Which fall from the heads of all the gods - Indra, Vishnu and others.
    Lalata chatvarajvaladhanajnjayasphulingabha
    nipitapajnchasayakam namannilimpanayakam
    Sudha mayukha lekhaya virajamanashekharam
    Maha kapali sampade shirojatalamastunah
May we obtain the riches of the Siddhis from the tangled strands Shiva’s hair,
Who devoured the God of Love with the sparks of the fire that burns on his forehead,
Which is revered by all the heavenly leaders,
Which is beautiful with a crescent moon.
    Karala bhala pattikadhagaddhagaddhagajjvala
    Ddhanajnjaya hutikruta prachandapajnchasayake
    Dharadharendra nandini kuchagrachitrapatraka
    Prakalpanaikashilpini trilochane ratirmama
My interest is in Lord Shiva, who has three eyes,
Who offered the powerful God of Love to fire.
The terrible surface of his forehead burns with the sound "Dhagad, Dhagad ..."
He is the only artist expert in tracing decorative lines
on the tips of the breasts of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.
    navina megha mandali niruddhadurdharasphurat
    Kuhu nishithinitamah prabandhabaddhakandharah
    nilimpanirjhari dharastanotu krutti sindhurah
    Kalanidhanabandhurah shriyam jagaddhurandharah
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
The one who bears the weight of this universe,
Who is enchanting with the moon,
Who has the celestial river Ganga
Whose neck is dark as midnight on a new moon night, covered in layers of clouds.
    Praphulla nila pankaja prapajnchakalimchatha
    Vdambi kanthakandali raruchi prabaddhakandharam
    Smarachchidam purachchhidam bhavachchidam makhachchidam
    Gajachchidandhakachidam tamamtakachchidam bhaje
I pray to Lord Shiva, whose neck is bound with the brightness of the temples
hanging with the glory of fully bloomed blue lotus flowers,
Which look like the blackness of the universe.
Who is the slayer of Manmatha, who destroyed the Tripura,
Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice,
Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, who is the destroyer of the elephants,
And who has overwhelmed the God of death, Yama.
    Akharvagarvasarvamangala kalakadambamajnjari
    Rasapravaha madhuri vijrumbhana madhuvratam
    Smarantakam purantakam bhavantakam makhantakam
    Gajantakandhakantakam tamantakantakam bhaje
I pray to Lord Siva, who has bees flying all around because of the sweet
Scent of honey coming from the beautiful bouquet of auspicious Kadamba flowers,
Who is the slayer of Manmatha, who destroyed the Tripura,
Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice,
Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, who is the destroyer of the elephants,
And who has overwhelmed the God of death, Yama.
    Jayatvadabhravibhrama bhramadbhujangamasafur
    Dhigdhigdhi nirgamatkarala bhaal havyavat
    Dhimiddhimiddhimidhva nanmrudangatungamangala
    Dhvanikramapravartita prachanda tandavah shivah
Shiva, whose dance of Tandava is in tune with the series of loud
sounds of drum making the sound “Dhimid Dhimid”,
Who has fire on his great forehead, the fire that is spreading out because of the
breath of the snake, wandering in whirling motions in the glorious sky.
    Drushadvichitratalpayor bhujanga mauktikasrajor
    Garishtharatnaloshthayoh suhrudvipakshapakshayoh
    Trushnaravindachakshushoh prajamahimahendrayoh
    Sama pravartayanmanah kada sadashivam bhaje
When will I be able to worship Lord Sadashiva, the eternally auspicious God,
With equanimous vision towards people or emperors,
Towards a blade of grass and a lotus, towards friends and enemies,
Towards the most precious gem and a lump of dirt,
Toward a snake or a garland and towards the varied forms of the world?
    Kada nilimpanirjhari nikujnjakotare vasanh
    Vimuktadurmatih sada shirah sthamajnjalim vahanh
    Vimuktalolalochano lalamabhalalagnakah
    Shiveti mantramuchcharan sada sukhi bhavamyaham
When I can be happy, living in a cave near the celestial river Ganga,
Bringing my hands clasped on my head all the time,
With my impure thoughts washed away, uttering the mantra of Shiva,
Devoted to the God with a glorious forehead and with vibrant eyes?
    Imam hi nityameva muktamuttamottamam stavam
    Pathansmaran bruvannaro vishuddhimeti santatam
Hare gurau subhaktimashu yati nanyatha gatim
    Vimohanam hi dehinam sushankarasya chintanam
Anyone who reads, remembers and recites this stotra as stated here
Is purified forever and obtains devotion in the great Guru Shiva.
For this devotion, there is no other way or refuge.
Just the mere thought of Shiva removes the delusion.

The reason for the song being so intense is because this song is supposed to be played when lord Shiva does his tandav (a form of dance) , because lord Shiva is a god destruction, his tandav or dance has the ability to destroy the universe itself, ideally this tandav is performed when lord Shiva is angry beyond limit, after performing this tandav it is said that lord Shiva's third eye opens, indicating the end of reality as we know it.
    Yeah so pretty intense

In an interview Shanker mahadevan sir said that he put all of his heart and soul into this song because of his name
The name Shanker is another name for lord Shiva
And Mahadev is a nickname given to lord Shiva. So Shankar Mahadevan was really excited to perform this sacred song because of his name.

The King of Sri Lanka, Ravan dedicated this song to Lord Shiva as a sign of devotion. Ravan is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. This song was written before the events of Ramayana (a major event in indian history).
Edit: It was written in Sanskrit, the oldest language in Europe and Asia.

Shiva - Lord Shiva (Hindu God of Destruction), also personification of pure consciousness and bliss
Tandav - Cosmic dance of Lord Shiva performed at the origin and end of creation
    Stotram - Hymn of praise
    Popular origin story:
Ravan, an asura king and ardent worshipper of Lord Shiva wanted to lift the entire mount Kailasa (the abode of Lord Shiva) in northern Indian mountain range and carry it all the back to his kingdom in the south, so he could have Shiva with him. When he tried to lift the mountain, Lord Shiva put His foot on the mountain to test him, and Ravan's hands were crushed under it's increased weight. To please Lord Shiva, Ravan composed and sang this complicated Sanskrit hymn. Lord Shiva was pleased with Ravan's devotion and blessed him.
You can easily find the English translation to this hymn on the internet.

This Stotra (song) was made by the demon king Raavan which glorifies Lord Shiva.
Raavan once tried to lift Mount Kailash (Lord Shiva's abode), but got pinned under it when Lord Shiva pressed his big toe on the ground. That brought Raavan to his senses and to ask for forgiveness he composed this Stotra (song) and sang for a thousand years. That's when Lord Shiva forgave him and freed him from under Mount Kailash.

It's a song written and composed by the Asura king Ravana in praise of lord Shiva. That's why it's considered one of the oldest songs in history(ofcourse there are many folklore and legends around this but almost all stories do admit, it the Ravana who composed it and it's old like really old and ancient, music always been an integral part of Indian culture, one the 4 vedas is dedicated to it)

Before Ancient.. best estimate given by you..
Ravana was not just a King.. Demon is not really an analogue to Asura.. but the only worst act of Ravana was that he abducted Sita maa..
Other than that he was a devout, an individual of intellect of the highest order, brilliant composer, a poet, an ascetic and how do we translate Dashanand ?
Even today his Kingdom is called Lanka.. but then we named it Sri Lanka (Sri !!!) a country today...
Who wants to prove that Ramayana is history and zero myth.. ? It's damn simple..

It is a hymn or an ode to Lord Shiva that was created by Ravana about 13000 years ago. Tandav is the dance of Shiva as he destroys what needs to be destroyed. The sheer energy of the ode is amazing. Daily recital of this Stotra destroys all sins accumulated in the past births.

Shiv Tandav means Lord Shiva's dance in Sanskrit. It is always played in our school annual day functions, here in Kerala, as the pooja dance, which means the welcome dance or first performance of the Annual day cultural programme. Girls and boys dance superbly for pooja dance and this sets the tone for the rest of the programme. You should see the pooja dance to see its beauty.

In extreme pain to get release from the situation Ravana created this beautiful and very powerful hymn in praise of Bhagwan Shiva. Shiva got pleased and relieved him of the awkward situation he was in.

You are correct about the intensity and the energy in the song:
So yes this song is about Lord Shiva - Tandav = A dance while in a trance - in this case a dance in anger - Strotam = Source.
So the is sung as a prayer to lord Shiva - when he is is dancing in anger . Its sung in sanskrit - almost 3000-4000 year old language - hence called the oldest song.
Its a prayer - but sung to modernn music by a lot of artists - this is Shankar Mahadevan's version.
The reason for the song being so intense is because this song is supposed to be played when lord Shiva does his angry dance .He is the lord of destruction, its said that at then end of this dance he opens his third eye - the eye between his eyebrows (representing the pituitary glands in our ancient texts) Shiva's third eye has the ability to destroy the universe itself.
This tandav is performed when lord Shiva is very angry, after performing this tandav (dance) he opens his third eye opens, and ending everything he gaze lands upon.
Ravana (the old king of Sri Lanka) sang this song when lord shiva was angry - and the song captures the emotions and thoughts passing through Ravana - as he watches lord shiva dance

Basically about Shiv, its pronounced as SHIV with a hard cut on V and not VA like Shiva
Shiv isn't just a god or One of the gods
    He is THE GOD
This stotram originates from when his greatest Devotee Ravan ( the villain of Ramayan) in his pride tried to lift up Kailash (shiv's residency mountain) to take him with him
Shiv to humble and teach Ravan a lesson just put down a single toe finger on the mountain and Ravan's hands were crushed, in desperation and to apologise basically, he created this The Tandav Stotram, he sings this as his hands were crushed under the mountain praising Shiv, with just beautiful verses Shiv was pleased and lifted his finger off as Ravan had learnt his lesson

This song is something very unique. It can fill you with a load of intense energy and imbue confidence in yourself.
As for information on Lord Shiva, Shiva is one of the Hindu Trinity gods alongside Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. He's the Destroyer while Lord Brahma is the creator and Lord Vishnu the Protector. You can also check out Vishnu Stotram. That'll be a great way to delve into the depths of Hinduism. Vishnu Stotram is much more on the calmer side than Shiva Stotram.

This song is not mythology. It is history. Many many people deny it or refuse to acknowledge that the history was real and not mere stories. SHIV TANDAV STOTRAM was sung by Ravan (‘demon kind of present day Sri Lanka) in utter and passionate devotion to Bhagwan Shiv/Mahadev. Thus the energy. He is listing all the qualities of Bhagwan Shiv in his devotion. Despite the 9 minute song at this pace, one of the lines specifically says that ”describing all your (Mahadev’s) qualities is not possible for an insignificant being like me(Ravan)”
Sanskrit(also known as the Devine language) is known to have the auditory vibrations to have a very positive effect on the brain when heard if you allow it to. Even more so if you are able to sing it aloud. ANY Sanskrit song.

    1) This Hymn (Stotra) is supposed to be Intense & agressive by Design... it is said in the ancient texts that when Lord Shiva does the "Tandav" (form of Dance) is the begining of the destruction of this cosmos..
    2) About the modern music# It doesn't matter what music is used, this Hymn has to follow the rhythm, pacing, tones. You can listen to mutiple versions by different singers the above will never change

  • @bharatithinks
    @bharatithinks ปีที่แล้ว +1

its a song of worship borne out of intense dedication and gratitude to the dances of creation and destruction performed by Lord Shiv. It feels intense because it embodies a vision of these infinite energies that are expended as the universe is created and destroyed again and again. The beat is very structured and classical, yet derived from primal and ancient universal sounds. Highest praise for the song comes from the supreme lord himself- it is said that Lord Shiv was so completely enthralled by the song that the devotee who was singing it (demon king Ravana) almost reached the lord's seat.
The world- renowned symbolic statue of this dance is the dancing pose of Shiv i.e. statue of "Natraja".The dance is called 'tandav'.

    Jatatavigalajjala pravahapavitasthale
    Galeavalambya lambitam bhujangatungamalikam
    Damad damad damaddama ninadavadamarvayam
Chakara chandtandavam tanotu nah shivah shivam
With his neck consecrated by the flow of water that flows from his hair,
And on his neck a snake, which is hung like a garland,
And the Damaru drum that emits the sound "Damat Damat Damat Damat",
Lord Shiva did the auspicious dance of Tandava. May he give prosperity to all of us.

I have a deep interest in Shiva
Whose head is glorified by the rows of moving waves of the celestial Ganga river,
Which stir in the deep well of his hair in tangled locks.

Who is the companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king),
Who controls unsurpassed adversity with his compassionate gaze, Which is all-pervading
And who wears the Heavens as his raiment.
    Jata bhujan gapingala sphuratphanamaniprabha
    Kadambakunkuma dravapralipta digvadhumukhe
    Madandha sindhu rasphuratvagutariyamedure
    Mano vinodamadbhutam bibhartu bhutabhartari
May I find wonderful pleasure in Lord Shiva, who is the advocate of all life,
With his creeping snake with its reddish brown hood and the shine of its gem on it
Spreading variegated colors on the beautiful faces of the Goddesses of the Directions,
Which is covered by a shimmering shawl made from the skin of a huge, inebriated elephant.
    Sahasra lochana prabhritya sheshalekhashekhara
    Prasuna dhulidhorani vidhusaranghripithabhuh
    Bhujangaraja malaya nibaddhajatajutaka
    Shriyai chiraya jayatam chakora bandhushekharah
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
Who has the Moon as a crown,
Whose hair is bound by the red snake-garland,
Whose footrest is darkened by the flow of dust from flowers
Which fall from the heads of all the gods - Indra, Vishnu and others.

    Sudha mayukha lekhaya virajamanashekharam

Who devoured the God of Love with the sparks of the fire that burns on his forehead,
Which is revered by all the heavenly leaders,
Which is beautiful with a crescent moon.

Who offered the powerful God of Love to fire.
The terrible surface of his forehead burns with the sound "Dhagad, Dhagad ..."
He is the only artist expert in tracing decorative lines
on the tips of the breasts of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.

    Kuhu nishithinitamah prabandhabaddhakandharah
    nilimpanirjhari dharastanotu krutti sindhurah

May Lord Shiva give us prosperity,
The one who bears the weight of this universe,
Who is enchanting with the moon,
Who has the celestial river Ganga
Whose neck is dark as midnight on a new moon night, covered in layers of clouds.

    Rasapravaha madhuri vijrumbhana madhuvratam
    Smarantakam purantakam bhavantakam makhantakam

This is praise by Ravana to Lord Shiva... Lord Shiva's Tandav is a celestial dance, dance of destruction of Universe. It is oldest praise song may be 27000 years old.

This song is intense because it is written by Ravan, an Asura. Asura has not something which can be translated to English. The nearest word to traslate Asura to English is Demon. Shiva had no discrimination between good or bad God or Demon. He purely represents pure void. Someone who has won over all emotions. So he can be pleased by anyone who worship him with all his heart. Ravana was the best among Shiva's devotes. But when Shiva is with his counterpart, Shakti he's just like any human. Anything to his counterpart, he will burn down the world with his anger. That's how he is. He's God of all Gods and he's the first teacher (Adi Guru). He's purely a God, human and Demon by nature. He's the worst demon he's the best human, he's the best husband, he's the best God to his devotees.

This song is describing Shiva Tandava in the oldest language of the world SANSKRIT.
Shiva, who is the God of destruction, got upset after the death of his wife SATI and started dancing the THE LAST DANCE which nearly caused the destruction of the world. Vishnu (Krishna) somehow stopped him after lots of efforts. This song describes the process.
Written by Ravana (from Ramayana), 6000+ years ago.
Music is added to it now....
It's NOT the oldest song RECORDED. it's the oldest SONG.

Fun fact- shankar mahadevan's first and last name both are Lord Shiva's name.
And the translation is so difficult because every line in this song is actually a single complex word.

Shiv Tandav is a prayer for Lord Shiv. It is believed that Ravan, the villain in Ramayana composed this for praying Lord Shiva... to please Him,just before the war with Shree Ram.

Rhythm of this song is prehistoric... Like god knows how old. Mahadevan has added music to it, but its not possible to change the rhythm of this song which is imbibed in the lyrics and sanskrit language itself.

Ravana went to Himalayas for salvation, seeing his hard work, but knowing his life, Shiva decided to capture Ravana inside the mountain. This was way before abducting Sita. Ravana is actually much, much, more elder than Rama. So, as Shiva captured Ravana, Ravana could not bear the dance of Lord Shiva, at the same time, was awed, inspired the energy emitted from the dance. So Ravana wrote Shiva Thandava.

Shiva is one of the Trimurti in Hinduism. He thought Yoga and meditation to human beings, so he is known as Adiyogi. He thought 112 ways of enlightenment.
The word Shiva means that's not, in simple words Nothingness. He is nothing but still everything. He lives in Cremation ground, doesn't like to wear costly clothes.

It is to be sung by anyone who wishes to cleanse himself from all his sins and to get blessings of Shiva (Supreme Lord or The Nature, the Super power. Ravana is Great Brahamin Scholar, but failed for his weakness for women. He wrote this Shiv Tandav Stotram in praise of His Beloved God Maha Shiva.

Shiv Tandava Stotram is a hymn written and sung by Raavan in praise of Lord Shiva. The Shiv Tandav Stotram represents the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva that eliminates all negative energies. The hymn includes 15 verses and each verse describes the fearless Shiva and his eternal beauty in great detail. It is in sanskrit and the pronounciation of each sylable is exact and perfect.

One of the possible originations behind this--
Ravaan was the king of demons hailing from Lanka (Present day Sri Lanka). Hee wwas a great and undettering devotee of Lord Shiva. Once, to see Shiva with his own eyes, he started to climb Mount Kailasha (the abode of Lord Shiva). Some historians rather say that he tried to lift the mountain instead. When Shiva realised that, he pressed his toes down on the mountain and trapped Raavan beneath it. Raavan, fesaring for his life, screamed this strota loudly, appeasing lord Shiva and finally finding freedom from under the mountain

This is a encient Hindu hyms in sanskrit language from encient hindu text praising, describing god Shiva performing a intense ,vigorous Tandava dance when he got angry to see on the planet humanity is on its decline, declining moral ethical values, injustice and voilence reaches at its peak. Shiva performs Tandava dance to destroy the planet/universe so as to restore a begining of new age/era and evolution of life back again on the planet so humanity ,faith, morality ,justice can be be restored. This cycle of destruction and restoration of life (begining) of new era is cyclical and its a contineous process as per hindusim. Which is described here in this hyms(song)
