I could not agree more. Don was amazing and our time with him MADE our trip. My wife and I spent the morning on a horse back tour. That was fun; we took tons of photos. Then we drove the valley in our car, that was fun; we took tons of photos. Then Don. Don Showed us the valley. He showed us the best places for photos and my wife said to me, "I think we can throw all of our earlier photos away now." Yep! He opened up the history, the culture and his own personal experiences to make Monument Valley understandable. Our time with him was unforgettable and I wish that we could have spent more time with him. Our next stop was Yosemite and even in the stunning beauty of Yosemite Valley I kept thinking back to our time with Don. He is a treasure.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Which sounds wonderful. My wife and I still retell some of his stories from time to time.

Don is the real thing his knowledge is second to non, he sang a healing song it was a real spiritual moment, his knowledge of plants for medicine and how they counted on their fingers taking them many generations back and the constant progress for his people left a lasting impression, he went to Mongolia 🇲🇳 he was shocked by the very familiar ways and stories of crossing the land bridge (iced up sea) Mother Earth and father sky the Hogan i could go on,
Take care Don thinking of you your a wonderful man.

Thanks for such a wonderful comment. You're right, there was so much more I could have put in the video about his trip to Siberia. It was a real treat to spend a couple of hours with him.

I hope I get to move towards MV when I return to the Navajo Nation. I love that area
I'm still trying to figure out if I should move back or not move back.

That would be a hard decision to make. It would be wonderful to live near enough to MV and some of the other wonderful places in that area to visit often.

Tim, great introductory presentation but your actual Monument Valley imagery was way too short...
Having worked in HOLLYWOOD for some 40 years as both a writer and studio historian, I knew all about its movie past and I too hired a good Navajo guide (not Don) just to go off-road and see those sights up close. I knew what I wanted to see was certain movie locations like the "Rock" seen in THE SEARCHERS that John Wayne's party is followed by the Indians.
We stayed one night at Goulding's which is outside the tribal park, and one night at The View cabins which is inside the park right by the majestic buttes. Did a horse ride as well. Goulding's is a much better run stay, whereas the "View" naturally has the best view!
Also hired a Navajo guide for Canyon de Chelly where MACKENNA'S GOLD was shot, all part of a four-state movie location tour. But the ironic thing about Monument Valley is that very few westerns have ever shot there despite it being the iconic symbol of the American West. You'd have to go much further West for that like Lone Pine, Red Rock Park, Vasquez Rocks, Iversons Ranch and so many other movie ranches in the San Fernando Valley.
On BACK TO THE FUTURE III we shot the drive-in movie scene and the Indian chase there... that was a story in itself similar to the trouble with the Navajo's Clint Eastwood had making THE EIGER SANCTION and his climbing the Totem Pole Rocks.
As part of its history that the Navajo guides don't tell the tourists, is that they suffered badly from the radiation of the local Uranium mines during the 1940's-1970's. The Navajo's have played Apaches, Sioux, Cheyenne but rarely their own tribe in movies.
Good luck to you, hope you get to return to Monument Valley someday...

I pinned your comment to the top to help others. What fantastic bits of information. My footage of Monument Valley didn't measure up to other videos out there so I mostly highlighted Don. Thanks.

@@timtalksaboutrocks....most6644 I know the history well, and I know the Navajo custom guides always want CA$H and not credit cards!
So often people are seeing the majestic buttes of Moab rather than Monument Valley in Hollywood movies... the tribal park is very restrictive for filming and logistically doesn't offer the variety of scenery and services that Moab has.

The road is fine for a sedan. I saw a guy in a Mini Cooper.

A Mini Cooper. Wow. I think if a person is going to drive a low clearance vehicle they might have to watch for spots where they might get bogged down in sand. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

@@timtalksaboutrocks....most6644 I think the only place they'd really have to maneuver at all might be the little hill to Ford's Point.

If I remember right we did a 2.5 hour tour with Don Mose. We didn't do the sunset tour although we didn't leave until sunset. I think our tour lasted longer than 2.5 hours and it was amazing from start to finish.
