Carla Nowak (LEONIE BENESCH) is a dedicated, idealistic young teacher in her first job at a German middle school. Her relaxed rapport with her seventh-grade students is put under stress when a series of thefts occur at the school, and a staff investigation leads to accusations and mistrust among outraged parents, opinionated colleagues, and angry students. Caught in the middle of these complex dynamics, Carla tries to mediate-but the more she tries to do everything right, the more desperate her position becomes.

Other strong roles are played by Eva Löbau, Michael Klammer, and, making his film debut in the lead child role, Leo Stettnisch. Cinematographer Judith Kaufmann (CORSAGE) was responsible for the visual design’s ominous mood.

One of the best movies of the year
If you are an idealist, if you are a teacher, and most importantly if you are a person who thinks that you make the best decisions in times of crisis, this movie is for you.

So many teachers are leaving or refusing to work in this profession. This is yet another wake up call.
I think people are missing the social commentary here. This isn’t even particularly about the education system- it’s about the mess we live in today- themes of cancel culture, immigration, surveillance, (the me too movement?), media, internet, policing,protests, and I’m sure much more are all packed in here. Awesome film
Absolutely loved it. The coolest thing about the movie is how much tension it can create without any CGI explosions, guns, police badges, people putting on really tight costumes etc. It's a people talking in rooms movie. Like this kinda what cinema is. You don't need much to make the magic happen in terms of visuals and sound. What you really need is a good story and let sort of cinema take care of the rest. This last part probably sounds silly.
Add fake news, racism, values, education at home and as you said … probably way more.
I usually am not a big fan of German productions. This one was worth the time! Not perfect but damn was this close to be. I had a hard time watching it to be honest.
Chapeau to the ones who are sticking to this kind of a job in todays society. For no money in the world would I be up for this task/job. No was Jose!

I have seen a good amount of movies this year. This one was definitely one of the best for me.
The trailer is lame, what's good about it?
For some reason, the movie reminds me of L’Étranger (The Stranger) written by Albert Camus. Just as Meursault was a stranger in his society, Ms. Nowak, the teacher is a stranger at the school. It’s realistically ‘absurd’ how she gets criminalized despite all her good intentions. The movie does a great job of showing it.

I've seen the movie in Amsterdam when it was released a couple of weeks ago. Because it was hyped in the media I had high expectations but left the theater with mixed feelings. Not that it was bad but i I was not sure what the message was or did it have any at all? Unfortunately It felt chaotic and unsatisfying, altho at times entertaining and even funny, I am german so it was easy to follow and felt familiar to me. I also want to point out that the german school system is incomparable to the american educational system.
I think this is exactly the chaos the movie was supposed to leave behind, because in the end the solution to the problem was kept open. Leaving questions and solutions unanswered in order to find one's own truth and take on the work of solving one's personal chaos.
That is the trailer's fault. It is a drama not a thriller.
An excellent drama
Do they not want us to see this movie? I’ve been searching since the Oscar nominations and it is not in theaters and not streaming. Whoever strategized that should get a stern talking to.

@@oliviad1467 Thanks! I noticed that, but too little too late. They overplayed their hand, IMO. I watched all the Best Picture nominees, all the live action and animated shorts, and I had my eye on the foreign category, but this one was such a speedbump that I didn't bother. I ended my Oscar sprint with Robot Dreams, which was so charming.

The Germans clearly like making social and political films based in schools.
There's an earlier film called "Die Welle" (The Wave - 2008) which uses a classroom experiment to show fascism grew in Germany.
A more recent German film set in school is called: "The Locked In Society".

The movie is so much better than this trailer. The trailer makes it seem like they had an improper romance and that is not it at all.
No the stakes are low in the film because it is serious social comment.
But the trailer makers are advertisers who want it to look more like a thriller.
The end was very disappointing...throught the entirety of the movie, I was continuously anticipating an explanation of the "video."
Although Ms.Kuhn's denial appeared genuine, someone had to have committed the theft. That was the cause of the whole matter. I hate when movies end that way!.
Maybe rewatch the movie. In Germany there’s a saying „Die Reise ist das Ziel.“ which translates to „The journey is the destination.“
The end shows that there was no real solution to the problem and it’s up to you, the audience to think about what could have happened.
Maybe she wrongfully accused and did not follow her own rules: „Es braucht stets den Beweis, die Herleitung.“ which she did not have for the committed robberies.
Does it matter who robbed the others? No, not really but it is very interesting how the school, the people reacted to this action. It’s what we see at a day to day basis, sadly: the societies get split. We are probably the furthest away from unity since the cold war ended. So sad!
Anyhow, maybe the movie might not be the „problem“ and you could give it another go. 😊

Ms Kuhn is most likely guilty. What are the odds of another person wearing the same blouse, the same day, since only a handful of people are allowed in the teachers lounge? And her behavior after the fact is downright sociopathic. She uses her son to get revenge, manipulates the parents and the students to turn them against the teacher, and keeps encouraging her son to do things that only brings HIM into greater trouble, rejects any chance to defend/explain herself and find a peaceful solution with the faculty. She basically endangers her son's whole future just to get back at the teacher and settle her own score. What kind of parent acts like that? That's also clearly not the behavior of an honest, innocent person.

No. The stakes are quite low. It is a more sombre and intellectual drama
Fantastic movie with a horrible ending.
It showd there were repercussions to people doing things which is reality. It doesn't end with a nice tied bow.
The trailer doesn't do it for me.
