As someone who has some experience feeling unsafe in their family home, I felt the same emotions come to life while watching Cindy. I loved parts of this film, especially the character Bryant and the caring and healing affirmations he provided to Cindy. I also loved his relationship with his dad and how the film juxtaposed a healthy family dynamic where a teen feels safe and encouraged to talk to his parent vs. an emotionally abusive environment where she felt unloved and like a burden. Unfortunately, it's more common for folks in the latter situation to end up in future unhealthy relationships that continue the familiar treatment and compound the trauma. However, I like how the film validates how helpful having a healthy relationship is to identifying and healing from past emotional abuse. Many times, folks who have been abused are expected to heal with counseling on their own without ever experiencing a healthy relationship firsthand or knowing what that even looks like.

True insights. Usually only those who've lived it know it. The rest unless they're paid by the hour, don't want to hear about any "negativity", so people walk around with added shame for their 'dirty' secret of having been abused... believing there must be something wrong with them for being such a burden... feeling unworthy of love and having no clue what healthy loving relationships are.

I would say 50/50. Its not like they are beating her. 300K over 17 years comes to a little over a thousand dollars a month. Peanuts. Actually, expecting someone to work for their stay isn't abuse, even if they don't treat her like their own children. But then, she is not their child. Believe me, she is 10000000% better off then she would be in the foster system, so actually, her aunt and uncle or whatever are doing her a huge favor, and if she isn't grateful, she should be. She certainly wouldn't have a cell phone of any kind.

While some of it is realistic the majority is not. They couldn't quite figure if she knew she was being abused or not. And the relationships with the boys were not realistic. No boy would just believe someone is in a relationship with them because the girl needed help while sick, and then never say anything or do anything to express that relationship. The whole thing gave me a bad vibe. And getting her a cat at the end was it for me. No one should just gift someone a cat. They never even asked her if she was ready for a cat. She just ran away from home and is in the middle of a court case where she found out that all of it was using her for her money. A cat is not a toy.

It's certainly not the best movie I've ever seen but this was absolutely unexpectedly enchanting from start to finish. I honestly just decided to put it on for background noise as I was going to do other things (so I could finally get it out of my watch later) but I ended up actually sitting down and genuinely watching it. And it's really really good, especially for a random free movie that I stumbled across on TH-cam of all places. Well I want to give a big thank you and bravo to those who made this. Those are the key words... thinking how normal it was to be constantly emotionally cut down!!! And how true that the abused one most often is told it is because of them, so they feel confused and guilty. What a great exposure to some of that and in such a gentle way of showing it that most anyone can learn from it without being totally overwhelmed.
May this film help anyone who is in such a situation of emotional abuse, to start to recognize it and reach out for help... and get exactly the help they need to move positively forward in their lives.
And when are we as a human race going to realize that all education will be at its best when it includes teaching and learning skills in daily life such as: being able to make yourself healthy meals, balance your own finances, be fluent in congruent communication, know conflict resolution and de-escalation skills, how to unwind in healthy ways, and how to do your laundry, clean up after yourself and manage your time wisely ... amongst so many other daily?
When we have these basic skills, we will be better people because our inner tensions tend to drop when we feel confident. And when we begin to feel relaxed enough energy tend to be more generous with our kindness.

    Ever After💕📚⚖️
Now, this made me wonder how I could have watched at least 20 versions of Cinderella over a lifetime and never really saw what the "Family" of Cinderella was doing as "Child Abuse". Whichever version, it was a message that any parent/grandparent should have immediately seen.
I mean, we all know this Story. We know in all the versions what the Stepmother did was messed up. We saw Cinderella suck it up, get the "prince" and live happily ever after. But I for one never realized the trauma of losing both parents that absolutely loved you, to be placed with people that saw you as an inconvenience, a burden, then turn you into a "slave", with the intent of crushing your spirit. What an emotional toll that would be on any child.
So, even though this Movie felt more like a 'public service', hour and a half training course in social services it was good, well written and worth every minute just to see that smile 😊 on Indy's face at the End.

I have passed up this movie so many times because I thought it wasn't going to be good, and now I wish I hadn't. It is actually what I could call a "modern Cinderella story" that let us see how abuse can be masked.

As a person, who’s had an abusive father in the past anytime someone yells at you or threatens you whether they think it’s not threatening or severe, it’s abuse, emotional abuse is the worst kind of beauty you could think of because the scars they leave behind they no one can see

The sad part was she, herself doesn't even realize that she's being abused☹
Like somewhere in this world, this is actually happening. No one deserves to be treated like this☹ Praying that things get better to those, never lose hope and never be afraid to seek help when they needed it so much. If there is someone that you know suffering like this, Let them feel that they are good and they deserve better. Good life, good environment, and good family.
    Be a family.

The trauma of losing her only support system, her loving mom and then thrown into an abusive family and dehumanized. So sad that she doesn't even know love or recognize abuse. She is so apologetic because she has only known hatred for ten years. This unfortunately, happens to kids in foster care.

I recently realized that this happened to me, I had no idea and I thought that I was the reason for my mothers suffering. She always went on and on about how she does everything for us but her actions betrayed her words and since she had been telling me this for so long I believed it. When I realized I was really shocked because I thought she was the perfect mother because that’s what she told me.

When your abused, you don't have the confidence to stand up for yourself and you tend to see the best in others. You keep hoping that if you do everything right then they will treat you better or at least you can avoid their wrath. Or you just shut down emotionally and withdraw to a space where no matter what they say, you'll just let everything bounce off you. Basically just dead inside. Its hard once you leave because you worry about how they will retaliate. Without a support system behind you to catch you, it can be really hard to leave.

I say it again, 'You can't give what you don't have'. Bryan is from a home of love, kindness, care, respect.....and no wonder Bryan became like that. Its a movie to be recommended , a lot to learn if you are willing to learn.
The most important lesson for me is two types of men shown in the movie "Problem-Solvers" and "Problem-Managers".
Max never thought of bringing her out of the problem ,he didn't think far to the level of asking for help.....just stay calm, be good, do the dishes early ,try to make the breakfast early , don't leave any area unclean ,...just try to keep been used, maltreated, abused ,for as long as they give you shelter.

This movie really shows how bad situations can be. As someone who has loved woth children in these same situations, (not the child but the childs foster sibling) its really true how many of the kids have no idea how bad they were truly treated. Some cases can be extremly brutal, and this movie shows just how real things can be. I love it for that.

This is the realest Cinderella ever. She didn't realize how bad her situation is (or maybe she did but didn't really mind it) until a really good and a bit pushy friend tells you to wake up. Emotional abuse isn't really obvious but it sucks your mind out. I personally have gone through this for 7 years with my ex-boyfriend, until a friend I just met really pushed me to move out. At least now I don't doubt my worth anymore. 🥰
