This May Be The End of Firewood For Me! - Installing a Heat Pump Mini Split System in a Pole Barn

  • My brother installed a heat pump with AC unit in his pole barn. I'm so jealous of the AC that I could see me installing a unit like this to replace my use of firewood. At least for the shop. We install a 48,000 BTU Senville heat pump and AC unit.

Ive been installing the Senville units in every house I have and removing the central air systems. Its more efficient and is a more affordable option to install yourself. For example I heat and cool a 1860 sqft house with two units in Michigan... Cheaper to run than a central air unit in the summer and turbo mode helps in the winter. I went electric only with solar to not have a bill, but winter does run up a tab, but is about the same as electric and gas combined price wise.

These are pretty much the main heating and cooling option in Australia. Ive got one in every room of the house and plan on putting one into my new shed I’m building. The trick is to go overkill with the size so you aren’t disappointed on the really hot days and it doesn’t have to work so hard.

Not sure where you're located, but my heat pump can't keep up on cold winter nights... in North Central Oklahoma.
If you have underground lines it will probably work. I don't.
Keep the firewood and stove for those extra cold nights.

I installed a Senville 2.5 ton unit two years ago in my 36x40 metal building shop. The building has 12 ft side walls and a 12 x2 pitch with a 16x12 role up door with 1" of foam board insulation on the door and R19 in the walls + osb. In the roof I have R19 plus 1"foam sheeting. I have HVAC certification and the proper tools to make the proper triple evacuation, I bought the unit off Amazon for $1250 wall bracket $124 flaring tool $100 bender $150 and don't forget proper line set adaptor $25.00.
This has been a game changer I live in the mountains of East TN. Last month 95 degrees 100 humidity the shop set at 75 felt cooler than my house set at 72. The inverter technology takes all of the humidity out of the shop, nothing rusting I feel cooler in the shop than I do in my house with a 3 ton heat pump set at 72.
Last winter the unit was able to keep the shop easily at 68 degree's with 12" of snow and a low of 8 degrees it does go into defrost often at very low temps. No issue so far and if I have to replace it and 7 years who cares. I have a Buck stove for back up that I had to previously feed 4 cords of firewood into a season. Night and day to keep shop supplies from freezing.
So this is a win win the Average increase cost on the electric bill has been $75.00 thats for 1440 sq feet plus the huge lose in the entrance door 12x16x 1" foam. So saving my body from the wood splitter but I still keep back some firewood for the house and emergency's
The key to making any of the mini splits work is making sure the flare fittings are perfect and torqued properly, a deep vacuum before the refrigerant is released and ground everything properly
I have also ran this off of an 5500 watt Honda generator during a grid outage with out a control board issue
I don't check this address often but I will try to add input as asked

Wow, what a nice unit, pole barns are all metal and really heat up in summer months, that is a real game changer, the nice thing is it cools in a half hour, and you only run it when you need it, so it should be very efficient, well done.

Great video, Neil. I installed a Pioneer Mini-split system into my home last year. Just having air conditioning in the house now is fantastic. My house has electric heat and the mini-splits do a much better job in heating mode than the existing system. Last winter I didn't have any heating issues, and I am northwest of you, about 15 miles west of Kalamazoo. As a retrofit solution, I can't recommend them enough, especially for houses and buildings without duct work.

we installed a similar smaller unit in our garage shop. Keep the garage shop cooled to the 80's in summer and 60's in winter. Low moisture/humidity and pleasant to work in. Easy to adjust short term when actually working and then back to back ground. highly recommended

The split ductless HVAC is something we have been looking at for a long time. Currently on a two zone central system and it seems like the second floor unit never shuts off in the height of summer or winter. Of course it doesn't help that the house was built in 1900. We have seven rooms downstairs and five rooms upstairs. This system could cut our electric bill essentially in half or more and eventually pay for itself in savings. Thank you for sharing your brother's system and installation in his pole barn.
Congratulations to your nephew on doing a great job editing, and the window unit to keep him and the electronics from having a melt down.
    I loved that last bit...

Thanks so much Susan. These systems are fantastic for older homes. If we didn't already, Richard fit our house with central air. This would have been a strong contender for a solution for us.
Thanks for mentioning my nephew, Trent and his work to get the edits done on this video. He's been a big help on the last few videos to take some of the load off during this busy time of the year. Hopefully he sticks around for a bit!
So far the kitten hasn't made it home for my brother's house, but I'm worried it's going to show up here one of these days! 😋

During a downstairs remodel this spring, we added a ducted mini-split heat pump to cool and heat a re-purposed downstairs area. So far in our hottest summer ever, the ac function has actually reduced our power bills as the older unit taking care of the of the house doesn't work as hard. Great technology in our experience

Great video!! I put a MrCool DIY 12K unit in our Lake house camp 3 years ago and its been great!! Like you said in the video, the DIY ones come with pre-charged line sets, so you don't need an HVAC certified install for the warranty coverage; purchased through HD on sale at that time for $1100, then $400 rebate from local power company because its 22 SEER efficiency; out of pocket ended up costing about $850 with pad, outside line set cover, electric; I ran my own power (this model is only 15A 120VAC). This unit is also WiFi enabled Smart device; I use an app on my phone to turn it on before we get to the lake.

I put a window mount AC in our Minnesota Northwoods lake cabin. My wife didn't think she needed it . . . until she felt the difference on humid days or nights where we'd sweat trying to sleep. We have propane heat but since heat pumps don't work very well when the temperatures get much below freezing a mini-split didn't seem like a practical choice for us.

This is exactly what I am planning on doing for my pole barn down here in Florida. They are extremely energy efficient. No loss through ductwork and can be programmed for individual zones. One consideration for a pole barn is also the height of the ceiling that is being conditioned so if that is taken into account as well it will be a great system. Great install!

    • @digdrivediy

That looks like a perfect addition to that sweet barn. You’ve tested the A/C but winter will be a good test for radiant floor heat vs wall mount. The Bluetooth looks very nice. You can have your shop getting to proper temp while you’re drinking your coffee.

My pole barn is 30 x 50 and I got quotes to have an HVAC system installed. They were 8000 to $10,000
I salvaged a heat and air unit off of a house that has burned down and installed some redneck ductwork. I did $1500 to insulate the whole building and 1200 for The unit and installing ductwork myself
They said I would need a 5 ton unit but 3 1/2 ton has done the job

We've had a Mitsubishi mini split AC system for over 12 years and love it. Unfortunately our first one was killed by a lighting strike close to the condenser (which houses the electronics) about 8 years in. We've since added whole house surge protection on our main panel. Our contractor also installed a whole house surge protector on the outside disconnect as added protection when he installed our mini split. He said they were doing this on all new installs now.

    • @tech99070
      @tech99070 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It will be! Resistive heat is an old reliable and I wouldn't get rid of it or anything cuz it'll work even if it's 40 below 0. But from 0-50f your new heat pump will run twice as cheap. Good on you for doing the right thing for your home and the environment. Heat pumps are the future, in 10-20 years time I wouldn't be surprised to see ducted split systems hit the road. Almost every new home wants at least multi zone anyway and DOE changes coming down are not making big split systems any cheaper. Mini splits are cheap to install and with a fistful of solar panels could mean climate independence for every homeowner.

thia doesn't need to be your only heating option but supplement your heating and thereby grratly reducing the amount of firewood you need and also the amount of labour to put into it.
As long as the outside heat exchanger doesn't freeze up these are super efficient and I wouldn't even bother turning the wood burning stove on.
So look at it not as your only option but as an alternative to make live easier.

I have a mini split here in Arizona mainly for cooling obviously(it heat well to but we really don't get that cold), I have a metal building and you can ground mount the outside units as well I put mine on cinder blocks and poured a concrete slab on top of blocks and mounted the unit to the slab. My unit is 18k btu for 600sqft and the unit keeps my shop cool no problem on 115+ days. My shop is insulated but I have rollup doors that are not and it does the job and is really cheap to run. I think after you spend some time in your brother's shop your really going to want one, plus here in Arizona it keeps all my greases and paints and everything from melting and going bad. PS they use way less electric than those window units too.

The mini split is exactly what I want. My building is 36x48 with 12'3" height. Radiant in floor heat with boiler was installed when building was put up. Installer quoted me a 36,000 btu mini split but I was running low on cash. Poor decision on my part. One guy I talked to was not willing to run the lines on the inside. This looked like a great installation. I especially like the bracket outside and all lines inside.

Electric bill is maybe $15 month when not occupied. In the winter, they tend to not hold temp at 20° or below that very well

Lot of new houses in norway buildt with a heat pump as its only heat source. And a lot of people ads it to use less firewood and to have heat going all day. Just 1 unit outside and inside will do. 100m2 house needs a 4kw unit i think, if you use some additional firewood on the colder days.

Nice Video Neil. But I went with Senville for my garage 2 year ago (36k BTU... I have 1200sqf). I had ONE problem and it was a big problem... No HVAC guy wanted to come to activate the unit. They all wanted to sell me their own brand... contacted Senville and they found one guy willing to come for 800$... (it was cheaper to buy a unit from the previous guys, and make them install everything!) so I finally ended up buying a vaccum pump and activating it myself with no warranty....

I got solar in 2018 and a heat pump in 2019. I have natural gas as a backup. After living with the heat pump for 3 years, I find that it is a much better air conditioner than my 30 year old air conditioner. It is a good heater in the spring and fall. It works terrible in the winter. I have had it freeze up in the winter. I went to emergency heat setting in the winter to force it to use the gas backup.
The main issue is that the local lennox dealer technicians in central illinois are not trained and don't have enough experience to work on heat pumps. I have had the compressor replaced under warranty and I had a terrible vibration issue on the lines coming from the outside unit to the inside A coil.
Maybe the mini split is good down to the lower temperatures, but my heat pump is good down to 35 degrees F.
    Good luck.

Thanks for posting this video, I am in the process of installing a Mr. Cool. I have a question, if you kind enough to answer. Why and how did you attach the lower unistrut bracing to the bottom of the compressor mount ?

    • @nathankoch9970
      @nathankoch9970 ปีที่แล้ว

The reason was simply extra support. It was difficult to find a wall bracket that was designed for a 4 ton (48,000 BTU) compressor, most said up to a 36,000 BTU. The compressor I installed weighed 225lbs and the bracket I bought was rated for 500lbs but I just was a little nervous having that thing 2 foot off the ground without anything else holding it up. I used galvanized 1 5/8" strut and went to a local electrical supply house and bought 4 hole 45 degree outside angle brackets to mount it to the wall mount. There were already holes in the wall mount bracket and I anchored the bottom to my concrete with some beefy tapcons. The 45 degree outside brackets weren't the exact angle I needed but I just put them in the vice and tweeked them a little with a 2lb sledge until they had everything in line like I needed. Since there were already holes in the bracket I just used some stainless steel 3/8" bolts and washers. Here is a link that shows the strut supports like the ones I used. www.discountstrutaccessories.com/45-deg-4-hole-open-angle-import.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw0dKXBhBPEiwA2bmObUF_9DRw82nJelXhXp0vdet0mkhao5DhW9skm2kPcpggl3Pcs-jxVhoC_Q0QAvD_BwE

    Oh COOL! (Literally)
Neil, I have been looking at this type of air conditioning for my woodworking shop. My constraint is power. I only have a 60 amp feed to the shop.
It has never been a problem. Especially since I converted all of my fluorescent lighting to LED. But, I do run upwards of 40 amps when planing and dust collecting lumber. Best I can tell the planer peak loads at about 25 amps while the collector peaks at 12.
I have 1200 sq ft and could use a smaller unit… I looked at mini-splits a few years back. But, they were too expensive and required too much power to operate. Perhaps it’s time to look again.
About cats… we have one. She’s a bit lazy. But, I caught her stalking a squirrel last month and posted the video. Cats are creatures that I don’t understand… this one is definitely selfish. Every word she says starts with “Me..”!
Your helper did a great job editing this video! I look forward to seeing what he does next. Please have him put his name in the credits!!!
    Stay cool bud!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah it is amazing how much these things have changed in the last 5 to 10 years. Seems like when I first started hearing about them they were still very expensive but now the cost seems pretty reasonable to me. I think some of the products come from across the pond, but that's a topic for a different day I guess.
As far as the cats go, it seems I've lost control. Kara and I had just one cat for the first 17 years of our marriage and now somehow in the last year there's been two and sometimes three more around! The girls just seem to have a way of talking me into some of that stuff!
My nephew has been a big help editing the last several videos. We've been working together to get them done where he does much of the rough edit and then I do the final edit still. I'm really helping that it can help me to get caught up and then I could get one or two videos ahead so I'm not always working them at the last minute.
Thanks as always for the great comments. Dave. Really appreciate you giving a shout out for Trent on the edit.
