I totally agree with your assessment of the Mr. Cool unit. We're on our third season with two 24k units in our shop and they've worked flawlessly. I liked them so much I installed a 24k in our pool house outbuilding. The first unit took the better part of a day to install. The second took almost 4 hours. The third took two hours. Our son-in-law liked the units so much he asked me to help him install one in his garage. So, he bought a "just like Mr. Cool" unit and saved $200. He may have saved $200 but it took two of us a full day to install it. It was a royal pain. Tolerances of routing the lines within the unit were incorrect and the line set was extremely hard to bend without kinking. Thanks for the video!
I am happy for you. Just so you know, to tell true humidity, you need to start watching your dew point. The weather can say 100 percent humidity just because it's raining. But that humidity feels nothing like the hot humid days of summer. Just a little FYI. If you start following your dew point, it will tell you a lot 👍
Yes, dew point is a much more fundamental measure. It is also intuitive and gives you a target - keep air temp above dew point and there won’t be condensation. We have a dehumidifier in our little cabin - the slab would be cold in spring and dew point would go higher than the slab. Now it stays at 50% relative humidity so it’s good and dry.
Nicely done I would recommend a surge protector added to your outside disconnect box. You need to protect those boards on that outdoor unit from power surges and brownouts
Once you clean the rust off the jointer bed or table saw, put paste wax on it and it won't rust. You just have to add more wax as you use the tools and it wears off. That's how I keep the rust away. I use Johnsons paste wax for floors.
I’ve been seeing these and questioned if they were real DIY. Your video has been a big help and probably help sell one of their units. Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
I reached out to them too for our “Hidden Creek Homestead” channel but they told me to get lost with my tiny subscriber count lol. So I paid for it… I bought the same 36k unit and had it installed by myself in just a few hours. Been working great so far. Good luck Evan.
I have a friend with a 40x80 shop that he spray foam insulated. He then put a similar unit in as you did in this video and it blew me away at how well it works. Even in Florida heat and humidity it keeps that huge shop very comfortable. Amazing how well these units work.
Very impressive unit Evan. And I didn't even know anybody made such a DIY heat pump unit. I have a small workshop that it would be ideal for, so I'll have to check in to one. Plus you and Rebekah made the installation look so easy. Thanks for sharing it.
Wow!! That is an Amazing Product!! Good Job Explaining the need for protecting your Tools!! Us people that don't deal with Humidity don't realize how hard it on everything!! Looks Great!! Have a Great Day!! 😀❤🌹
Went up really easy Evan and Rebecca and looks great also. That should help you keep the rust down. Thanks for sharing with us, stay safe and have fun as always. Fred.
Congratulations. I may have heard your deep sigh of relief knowing your tools will be secure. Now to get the rust off them. Lots of products out there. Choose wisely.
Evan to remove the rust from your tools all you need is some brass wire wheels and WD40 clean rags and your cordless drill or grinder depending on what type of brass wheels you purchase and buff away after you get the rust off go back with some ascestone and clean rags to get all the oil from the surfaces, then apply some wax on the surfaces Rockler sells products for proctoring the cast iron and steel surfaces.
That is a great system. After I retired from my regular job I went to work for Home Depot part time. We sold those and every customer who bought then loved them. It is said they are 85% more efficient than standard CHA.
As an add on to keep your equipment from rusting, I used to use a metal wax/polish on the metal surfaces. It also makes for a slicker surface for the wood to ride on.
If you just pour a concrete pad, 2 foot bigger than the unit, set unit 2 foot from the wall for servicing, you don’t have to worry about hitting it with the lawnmower.
Ok, Evan, now just wait for the first below Zero Fahrenheit day and you can start on the Allis Tractor repair. You did a great install on the HVAC unit. Thanks for the video and take Rebbeca out for dinner for her helping you!
I am not too far away from you in S. Wisc. and I know what you mean about humidity. I insulated the shop when I built it, but I only heat it with a Kerosene torpedo heater or a propane heater, and in both cases, it introduces even more humidity to the space. For things like the table saw top, or machining tool surfaces, I have had good luck waxing them. Pretty simple and protects the surface. I would love to install a unit at some point, and probably should considering that is the industry I work in, lol. Take care!
Great job Evan, you could use a wall mount garden hose bracket to support those hoses and cables and a car spare wheel vinyl cover to protect the hoses
After you buff the iron surfaces with some fine steel wool to remove the rust you can apply a coat of car wax . This aids two ways: your work will slide easily on the surface and it will slow down future rusting.
Ok, first, great job on the installation. But with the line set being in a coil like it is over time, it will destroy the outdoor unit. The reason is that your refrigerant has oil in it. Any oil will settle in the bottom of the line set.
Evan just watched the pole barn power episode Mate you gotta give Rebecca a big hug she’s a super trooper Then to really impress buy her a new pair of jeans with no holes
Yes I really like the MrCool, I was wondering about them and after the way you show us the installation I am getting one for my two car Garage, I live in Arizona and we spend a lot of time in the garage, but it gets so hot we have to stop. As for your tools you can lightly spray them and wipe them with W-D 40 helps alot with the rust
One suggestion like to make take some plastic window screen and put on intake side of condenser this to keep cottonwood and others air floating organic matter from plugging up coil surface major pain to get off if you don't
I installed a Mr. Cool, FYI, they have an Outdoor Air Lockout of 40 degs. And they don’t heat very well when the oa temp gets below that. Great unit for cooling though.
Wow Evan, that is really neat, love it. You do a fantastic job not only describing what your doing, but the reason(s) why and how. I have to say, I am so glad that I subscribed to your channel, one of my favorite ones to watch. I think you and your wife have a super nice personality and you give an easy to understand explanation of things you do. Thanks so much and have a wonderful evening and a great remainder of week.

Wow Evan you are an awesome homesteader. The things/jobs you do are amazing. Installing your heat pump look so simple when you did it. Fantastic job well done. Explaining the installation process and telling each step of it was amazing. Thanks for sharing your improvements on the homestead. A job well done.
I hate to say this but just because you have an AC/Heat unit doesn't mean your stuff won't still rust. Adding A/C will actually create even more humidity problems. The problem is the construction of pole barns with the metal shell makes for a nightmare humidity issues. You need insane amounts of insulation and a dehumidifier plus the temperature control unit (which you have). Good luck and hope your new unit is enough to solve your problem!
Having a full machine shop in my garage in very humid climate . I keep a can of WD40 around. Just spray the machined surfaces with that every couple of weeks. Works great
You've got me thinking seriously about installing this in my workshop. I'm getting too old for firewood and all the extra time involved. Just need to convince my spouse now. Keep up the great videos, I watch them all.
Evan is there anything you can't do. I learn so much from your videos. I don't see why you don't have more subscribers. Can't wait to see what you do next. Keep up the good work.
That sure was nice of Mr Cool to furnish the unit. Since I watch your channel Every Week I hope that you at least provide your viewers with a Monthly update. I'm interested in how well it preforms & holds up. Looks like you are going to have the Dream Shop when you finish?
Thank you do much! Sorry for so many questions. I'm interested in its summer performance. How many Square Feet is the shop. Did you get a large enough unit to cool the entire shop or just part of it. Whats the sq ft capacity of the unit's ability to cool effectively?
Now i live just north of Springfield MO and I have a bandsaw, drill press and other tools with cast iron and don't have any issues with rust but what I do is i found some of that thin silver bubble wrap that I cut and they sit on the surface of them.
Love how you explane instaling a Mr. Cool heat to pump every minute of it ,
Evan - you never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of how to do absolutely everything! Congrats on getting the heat pump donated, that's huge!

Evan, cut the few inches off the front of hanger and plant some bushes on the sides of the outdoor unit as a bumper for the mower.

Pro Tip:
Make sure to check those fittings in a couple weeks and again in a couple months. The vibration from running will surely loosen them.
Interestingly enough, I started installing my own Mr Cool system today in my new workshop building...
My neighbor put an ac unit on his house and his kids kept backing into it and after several repairs they finally destroyed it. Thanks for the video.
