    The best thing about UK weather warnings is it’s guaranteed there will be a new Tom Heaney video putting a tent through its paces.

    Hi Tom. Great detailed review as always. Based on my experience of owning the Assaut 2 8k I can confirm the attention to detail and features in that tent makes Hilleberg designs look somewhat dated by comparison. It just feels special. Based on your review this basecamp model is clearly in the same category. The customer experience I have had from samaya is amongst the best I have experienced in any industry never mind just the outdoor sector. I’m a massive fan of the brand and with the discount in particular this tent looks to represent exceptional value against the competition. Cheers. Gary

      Hi Gary, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience regarding Samaya Equipment... Yes they really are forward thinking as a brand and make really innovative products... This Basecamp here is one of the nicest looking tents I have ever seen and it really excited me when I put it up.... I too have had exceptional customer service something which is rare these days.. Regarding Hilleberg tents, they make a really great basic product but have made few changes over the years and at some point if they wont change other brands like Samaya will start to get many of there sales IMO....best wishes Tom

    Great tent it would work well here in Finland. The only problem I have is the bland colour 🤮 When you have 6-8 months of the year with snow you realise that tents like Vango make sense because the colour is mentally uplifting. Orange feels warm and eases the eye strain of endless white.
    I really, really wish manufacturers would look at this and produce maybe a different choice of colour inner tents. Even MSR do a red groundsheet so that helps.
    Honestly here in the snow I would not use this, it feels cold and dull which is a shame considering how good it is.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thank you for sharing your thoughts on the tent color.. In reality I personally like the color but that's just my individual choice and I have bought many expensive items that I didn't like the color of, due to them having great functionality and features.. A white inner tent is not my first choice either but I have bought many tents with white inners too.. Once again thank you for your comments and thoughts 💬. Best wishes Tom

Your review helps me feel more confident to try them out. I’m not in the market for a 4 person otherwise I’d jump on this deal. I am looking for a 1-2 person for winter alpine trips.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi as far as I am aware no they do not.. I am also not sure if Hilleberg does it with their larger tents either.. Larger tents generally don't sell as well as smaller ones and then mesh inners may sell even less.. This tent though is very well ventilated with many options and also the thinner 20d inner will be more breathable than the 40 on the Hilleberg.. I hope that this helps.. best wishes Tom

    Just a quick update on my experience.
    I received the basecamp this past Friday. The tent box was in incredibly (embarrassingly so) poor shape, with the majority of the lid taped together. The pole bag was dirty, the elastic holding the poles together was so old that most of it had failed completely.
    What was really disappointing was that the attachment points for the inner were an older style elastic and loop design (not the nice clips as seen in Tom’s video) which is a huge pain as you basically have to reconnect and/or validate all the attachments are in place after pitching as these loops easily come off the elastic when the tent isn’t under tension.
    Other than the above the tent is awesome, build quality is exceptional, pretty easy to pitch (I had a bit of trouble getting the first two poles through the sleeves, however this is part learning curve, part -10F in the wind by myself and clumsy gloves).
    Obviously I received used / really old stock which is unacceptable in my opinion as that’s not what I purchased. I have an email off to Samaya, my final conclusion on the tent itself will unfortunately come down to an evaluation of Samaya’s customer service and how they remedy the situation.

      @@TOMHEANEY100 I just received my BASECAMP yesterday, and had a similar experience when I set it up for the initial check today. The box was in better shape than above (just one side that was torn, but I suspect that happened in shipping), and the tent was all good, but the tent inner/ outer connectors were the old style, and many of them came undone in the initial setup (with some of them being a bit of a pain to get reconnected). I have an email out to their support, so we will see what happens there, but hopefully it will be remedied quickly.

    Thank you for your in-depth review, Tom! I couldn't resist the crazy offer and bought the Basecamp right away based on your 40% discount. The plan is to see if the Basecamp will be capable of replacing my Hilleberg Tarra for winter snow camping in the Swiss Alps. Keeping in mind the current price (and availability) of the Tarra (€ 1650), this offer is just too good.
    My partner and I love the Tarra, as it just gives us peace of mind under all conditions - especially in the Alps, where the weather can always change quickly and dramatically. In this regard, the Basecamp seems to keep up with the Tarra. The 4-person size of the Basecamp and the corresponding 5.6kg may turn out to be an overkill. However, in winter, it's nice to have enough space for all your gear, and weight-wise that's more or less comparable to the Tarra.
    What may set the Basecamp apart from the Tarra in my point of view: 1) Ventilation: I love the Basecamp's proper vents that I miss heavily with the Tarra. 2) Workable vestibule space: Even though the Tarra comes with two quite big vestibules, they are not fully workable due to their flat diagonal shape - especially in high winds. 3) Pockets for storage. 4) Fully geodesic dome structure: On the flat parts of the Tarra's roof, water and snow tend to pile up.
    Can't wait to test it in the coming season :)

      Hey thank you very much for letting me know that you have bought the Samaya Basecamp.. Yes its an amazing offer that's for sure and I am sure the stock wont last long... Hilleberg tents are great but the price has really increased lately for new ones but the second hand market seems to have slowed down.. The Tarra is a fantastic tent and I have reviewed one but like you say the vestibule is small compared to the basecamp and the basecamp has masses more interior space too.. One of the reviews on the Samaya website talks about using the tent in Greenland and it was two people sharing so definitely doable for this..Between two people 3KG each so only 1kg more per person that the Tarra for so much more comfort and liveability..best wishes with the tent and let me know your thoughts once you get it if you get a chance... Hey Tom, first of all, love your videos. I’m wondering how does this compare to the Samaya 3.0 and 2.5? I’m looking for a tent that can have 2 comfortable people in it and with stand some serious wind and rain at low temperatures. Saw only that the 2.5 is lighter and cheaper but the 3.0 has similar futures to the assaut2 8k. Would love to read your thoughts on this.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Josh, thank you for your feedback on my videos.. Ok let's work first by eliminating the Basecamp if you are looking for a two person tent! Its just too big and heavy and if winds are beyond 40mph based on my experience to needs to be double polled adding further weight... The 2.5 looks pretty good but uses 8.7 mm poles and I am not sure how these would manage in high winds as its a reasonably large tent.. BUT it's hard to say for sure as I have not tested it.... So then it comes down to the 3.O which is very light for its size and uses 10.65 mm poles and a geodesic structure... That would be my pick and I think the safest option between the 3 tents... best wishes and sure let me know which one you decide to go for... Tom

I had 2 Mountain Hardware Trango 2 s and 4 North Face expedition Tent s all with ratings of 1500 and never a problem.. This Samaya was tested here in a weather warning for rain and no leaks... A high HH rating is used by some manufacturers to help sell their tents but applying lots of water proof coating s such as PU actually stiffens and weakens the fabric.. Same principle as any 4 person tent.. the group of users can all sit around in the tent socialising.. Hi Tom, another informative video even with the pitch invasion 🐾🐈‍⬛
    The tent looks very similar to the hilleberg Saitaris.
    How do they compare for size & overall performance?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lee, I have reviewed the Saitaris but not wind tested it.. Wouldn't be much difference performance wise as very similar in size, pole diameter and design.. Internally very similar too but the Samaya is better featured and about a kilo lighter due to some lighter fabric.. The Samaya is way better value too IMO. Best wishes Tom

    Let's Fucking GOH.... Tom, that tent looks like a good challenger to the competition. I wish i was the third wheel to form a trifecta of outdoor men facing nothing but harsh conditions.

    If you can compare to the trango tent from mountain hardwear, or a ve25 northface tent or even a hilleberg black series tent what is your choice among them;
    Nice video as always!

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi in the real world they all have pros and cons... I have tested, owned and used all of these.. The Mountain Hardware Tango's definitely cut corners, and North Face dont concentrate on tents as much as they used to.. The Samaya and Hilleberg both are a level up in respect of being Premium.. The Hilleberg Black label equivalent would be heavier, over twice the price but slightly more durable due to that extra weight.. The Samaya at this money or even full price would be my pick for a 4 person tent.. best wishes Tom

    This is a fabulous, highly robust tent. 40MPH winds are a joke for this thing, single poled. Double poled, it'll handle virtually any wind conditions, 60 on up

      Hey Gavin, yes this is a really nice tent... To be honest 40mph were putting it under a little pressure BUT then thats what double poles are for and this is easy to do and adds significant strength.. Thank you for the comment and best wishes Tom

    Deleted my comment because I was making fun of Samaya's Arcteryx Veilance / Rapha-esque Instagram page / social media strategy, along with their flat caps and craft beer drinking, and all of them being white? Bit harsh. Also, wouldn't you want a base camp tent in a bright colour for safety? But this only comes in this sage green. RE: Features and quality - looks the same as any other base camp tent.

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris.. no worries with your comments and sharing your personal opinion re colour. I can assure you I have tested and been in more tents over 30 years than most and the features and quality of this tent surpass them all... But sure that's only my opinion and I have evidenced this in the video.... best wishes Tom

    Something really dodgy going with this company. I just checked their "Outlet" / sale section again, and it now says:
    £950.00 £2,000.00
    SAVE 52% ( £1,050.00 )
    Pretty sure before it said the RRP was £1500, as shown in your video, and which is same price the newer version costs at full price. So they seem to be doing what sellers on Amazon do: Jacking up the supposed "full price" / RRP to make the discounts seem better. Now they can say you save 52% (£2000 to £950), whereas in your video here you said it's a 40% saving (£1500 to £900). Really very uncool and dodgy marketing and tactics. How can they retroactively change the RRP of an old / discontinued product!?

    • @TOMHEANEY100
      @TOMHEANEY100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, When I made this video all the information was and is still accurate regarding this particular tent. The Outlet product is a 2021 model and £2000 could have been the price at that time I honestly dont know.. There could well be some differences in the exact specification and thats between you and Samaya if you are interested in asking them why there are differences in the price regarding the older and newer models.. I have tested this tent (carried it up a mountain on my own in a weather warning), showed you a lot of detail, and gave you an amazing discount code, so if that is not enough then like I said before further questions should be directed directly to Samaya not here in these comments. I hope you understand... best wishes Tom

    Explain how someone can carry such a heavy tent for hiking unless your built like a brick shithouse?

    • @TOMHEANEY100

      It's meant to be carried by 4 people split up so that's about 1.5kg each .. And I carried it on my own to film this review..I can't be more fair than that.. Best wishes Tom
