Tom, one thing I think you should mention about the selective use of DCF. Samaya is not using DCF on parts of the tent that are REALLY taking a lot of wind. This is very smart, as DCF doesn’t dynamically stretch the silnylon/poly etc. Engineers will tell you that strong structures need to have some “give” to them. DCF doesn’t have this give, so Samaya uses them in less critical areas. There’s footage of pure DCF tents in open ground high winds and they start to harmonically flutter. It looks and sounds bad!
Hey Matt I deliberately have kept these videos a bit less technical and more about the field testing and my findings. While I have some knowledge of DCF.. to get involved with this technically could open a can of worms that I dont want here on the channel from the many fans that feel its the be all and end all of tent fabrics... Regarding the selective use of DCF I cant find anywhere on the Samaya website that states this ( I could have missed it). I would have thought that there was less DCF on certain areas more to lack of breathability and costs. The ULTRA version of this tent uses more which increases the cost, keeps the strength and lowers the weight.. Thank you once again for your input and thoughts... best wishes Tom
Good video, Tom! You are putting this tent through it's paces. That vestibule really held up under the wind better than I thought it would. Pretty straight forward connecting the vestibule to the tent. Doing it with gloves on was a nice real world touch. Thanks for all you do. Looks to me a good tent. May very well try one in the next couple months. The questions I had are covered. Mainly it doesn't leak, stable, quite, dark inside, I always try to to get a dark green because of that, the gap of the vestibule was covered. Small pack size, good for motorcycle adventure travel. I really hate watching videos like this as it shows how susceptible I am to wanting to buy things that I know I really don't need! ;D It's a decent looking tent - the first time I've heard of it to be honest - but it looks well designed and performs well. Well Tom, you must have laid all the irritating comments to rest now! I feel there is a lot of doubt over single skins, but you have to remember the discipline this was made for, mountaineering when simple reliability is paramount. Good news and reviews so far on Samaya Assault 2. Appears the fabric is impressive given a semi-permeable. Workmanship also looks better than par for course in terms of seam work, zips, ventilation, featured hardware and quality control. I don't recall cost of this model? This is the model I liked of the couple you've exhibited from this company. The optional vestibule is a plus regarding versatility and longer term livability. It would be interesting to test this tent for outfitting here in Alaska. Real question is... would it be up to task? Really needs that more demanding sustained 55mph winds and raining sideways test outing 🙂

Hi Tom. Great reviews. Thanks to them, I seem to have found “my” tent for climbing 7 and 8 thousand mountains, but I still have doubts. In my past, in 1985-1992, I climbed 25 peaks over 7 thousand and 2 eight-thousanders (Everest and Dhaulagiri), all without oxygen. In those years, the tents were a little different, heavier, about 6 kg, and the ventilation was worse. 2 years ago, after undergoing hip replacement surgery, I started going to the mountains again and went to 2 seven-thousand-meter peaks. I bought all the necessary equipment, all that was left was a tent, with the choice of which I was completely confused in modern technological, super-light shelters. Over the past 2 months, it seems that I have gone through all types, brands and options, leaving Rab latok mountain, Black diamond Eldorado, Big agnes shield 2 on my list. Now Samaya assault 2 has been added, it seems ideal for my needs. It seems to me that of all the Samaya options, the wall fabric of Assault is somewhat similar to the material of the single-wall tents Rab, Black diamond and Big agnes. The material is stronger and withstands strong winds and abrasion much better than Dyneema. Am I right or wrong? Tell me, how has your opinion about the tent changed 2 months after you first met it? How does it perform in winds stronger than 40 mph? Does it flap a lot in the wind? Are there any tears, abrasions, etc.? Is ventilation still ideal in different conditions? Perhaps in the process of getting to know her, some other negative aspects appeared? Thanks again for your hard work? Hi really awesome to hear of your experience and your achievements are outstanding.... I have used the Asssaut 2 now I am sure 10 times... Before I got it I thought that it could work for me and after all the use I am definitely right. Yes the material is very strong and solid and the dyneema on the floor is also very thick to help with puncture resistance. Two months later it has proved itself in every way. Withstood 40mph winds with ease, and survived a condensation challenge when the outside air was cold damp and saturated but inside was warmer. The ventilation options are great even when the conditions are challenging outside. The only small negative I can think of is there is no way to fasten back the door on the vestibule (or maybe I haven't found it yet). You also need to be aware that its a single skin tent and on some occasions you are going to get condensation as there is no barrier between it and yourself... All tents can get condensation there is just no protective inner on this one. For me though this has not even been any issue at all... I really do love this tent and it offers so much protection and space for its weight.. I think I mentioned to you before but the quality is definitely the best that I have come across... Tom, thanks for your reviews. Thanks to them, I bought and received this tent today, it looks great, tomorrow I plan to test it on the mountain. According to the forecast there will be snow and winds of up to 60 km per hour, let's have a lot of fun. Tell me how to collect it? Roll it up like a carpet and place it in a bag, as the sellers sent it, or just gradually push it into the bag, starting from the back wall and ending with the open door, so that the air escapes. At the end of the review from Samaya, the girl simply stuffs it into a bag, but there is a slightly different tent, Samaya 2.0. I haven't found anywhere how to do this correctly?

Great video Tom, the Samaya stood up to those winds no problem, with the added bonus of zero condensation...but that's one expensive piece of kit. I'd guess it would easily be out of the price range of most tent users in this country. A very niche market indeed, tents like the Samaya's. Excited to hear you're trying out a KUIU, I've had my Storm Star 2.5 yrs now & I'd pit it against any Hilleberg. Had my Mountain Star just over a year and it's my favourite go-to lighter weight option for 3+ season use. I also own a Summit Star, KUIU's sub 1kg trekking pole shelter, but tbh it doesn't come out as much as the other two. Yip, I have a soft spot and a lot of trust in the KUIU tent range.

@@TOMHEANEY100 P.S There's a specific way to pitch the Storm Star - or you'll put undue stress and tension on the poles. Those 4 metal clips go on first and come off last. Just been re-watching your Samaya videos after a couple of nights in my trekking tent: a Tarptent silnylon Rainbow 1, complete with condensation! I see the Assaut2.0 has half the moisture wicking rate of other Samaya tents which makes the lack of condensation in yours all the more impressive. I noticed also that the Samaya website suggests your 😊model is optimal for high winds (compared for example with the dyneema Ultra version).
Hi Peter, yes I took the risk with the less breathable fabric as I wanted a stronger tent and also wanted the vestibule on the lee side regarding wind resistance and shelter. it has worked exceptionally well as I have now used it on 6 amps and all have been great. I also knew that I pretty much only camp when its windy so I have had zero condensation... What do you think of build quality and construction from Tarp Tents I really fancy a Scarp 1 Ultra... You know how it is always looking.... Did not realise you had a Tarp Tent.... best wishes Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Glad to hear the Samaya is treating you well! Yes, I replaced my frustratingly small Enan with the T Rainbow as a low weight and fairly cheap shelter for low level hikes. The Rainbow is quite spacious but very difficult to pitch in any wind; not too bad once guyed with extra guys (it doesn’t come with any!). Build quality is excellent and it’s an ingenious design that allows you to adjust height of bath tub floor/side mesh while inside the tent. But it is fiddly and hooks, zips, zippers and tie backs are all tiny compared with Hilleberg’s. The nylon floor is very slippery and Tarptent advise painting sealant to it but dust/insects get attached to it 😆: not good if you like a pristine floor. With extra guys and a full range of pegs and a Tyvek footprint it weighs just over 1200g.

I enjoy your videos Tom, they have helped me greatly. In regards to storm worthiness would you lean towards the Soulo or do you think the Samaya would be up to the task? I have an Enan and want to add a storm worthy winter tent into the mix, and I have reduced it down to the Soulo and the Samaya 2.0. Wind, rain and snow loading capabilities would be greatly beneficial as Tasmanian winters can throw some fairly hard weather at times...
For weather resistance it would be the Soulo. 3 poles supporting a smaller structure. Soulo better for rain too as the Samaya has more open vents at the top..But the Soulo struggles regarding weight and space...But if you are happy with the space in your Enan then that shouldn't be an issue with the Soulo.. Really interesting design, we do wonder whether the modular concept is the future, there definitely is something to it. From looking at your excellent breakdown, it does look rather finicky however, and just not sure that’s practical in cold temperatures. A more robust clipping system like hilleberg could be a solution. All the best - BR

I am a big fan of the Hilleberg clipping system but the pole sleeves here on the main body of the tent mean that it's up super fast and then you just add the vestibule. Taking down thought you just need to remove the pole and everything else can just go straight into the one tent bag to sort at home.... best wishes Tom

It's very tight.. It just about fits two regular 20 inch wide pads.. It's extremely comfortable for one but a mimilist shelter for two... I hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

Hi Steven, thank you for watching. I have good experience with North Face 4 season tents but not any of the single skin assault tents I am afraid.. The North Face Assault 2 looks good but looks like its a bit heavier than this one and the fabrics not as high tech..Not so sure of that internal pole pitch either but to be fair I haven't tried it.... When you've given this two years of hard use, it will be interesting to see how the breathable fabric performs. But for all that, given the strength and low weight of modern Si Nylon flies the window for single skin tents has surely come and gone?

Hi I hope you are well.. YES I still have the Samaya and it's definitely a keeper for me.. It really suits moderate to very windy conditions for my camps. It's a little cold in full winter partly due to the fact that you have to ventilate and that means parts of the tent are open which creates drafts.. I have never had any issues with condensation but then I pick the occasions that I use it as I have other tents.. My friend bought one too and is just as happy with it as I am.. Quality is exceptional and super comfortable for one person.. I hope this helps and any further questions just ask as I would want to be delighted with the tent . Best wishes Tom

Great video series! Hard to find anything this detailed on Samaya tents... I wonder how the Assaut2 8K compares to the Locus Gear Djedi DCF-eVent Dome. Some differences are clear, like external vs internal poles and other features but seeing them one next to the other would be super cool. One thing I tend to favor in the Djedi is the presence of a tensioning cord on the largest side panels. Do you think the Assaut2 8K would benefit from these for wind resistance? (Those panels seemed to cave in quite a bit)

To be honest I am seriously impressed by the wind performance of this tent, and wind performance is my favourite subject regarding 4 season tents. There are two lower side guy points on this tent and they make a big difference. You should be able to see them at the top of the dyneema groundsheet... My friend and I were actually discussing the difference that they made to the pole stability and they actually support the side panel surprisingly well too.. BUT this design of tent like many other tents too still needs correctly orientated into the wind for best wind performance IMO. Best wishes Tom
Hi the vestibule attaches both to the top of the tent and the poles.. Yes you can leave it on but it will make threading the poles on your next camp more difficult as the vestibule will be in the way on top of the tent and you still will need to attached it to the poles at the 3 points.. I find I usually place all my gear into the tent before I attach the vestibule as when the vestibule is attached its a long way to the front of the actual tent to get your kit inside unless you get into the tent.. Hi Tom I have exactly the same tent with a vestibule. So far I have only stayed overnight in the snow with cold temperatures down to minus 30 degrees in the Swiss mountains. Unfortunately I always have slight crystallization and condensation. Somaya told me that it is important to set up the tent in the wind because of the good ventilation. I'm interested in whether there is no condensation even in heavy rain in warm weather of 5 degrees and higher WITHOUT (as in the video) strong wind. Have you tested this?
Hi thank you for getting in touch... You will always be able to find conditions that are unfavourable for EVERY tent... In the conditions that you describe I would use a different tent as I feel the Samaya is not best suited.. I own this tent because I knew it would suit the type of conditions I regularly camp in and thats windy environments that are exposed, just like Samaya recommend. It has performed perfectly with zero condensation...So I am afraid I haven't tested this as its not what the tent is designed for... I hope that this helps.. best wishes TOM
Hi I am afraid they are a very old Haglofs pair I got about 10 years ago.. They have lasted very well. Sorry they are not something recent you can buy... They are quite a lightweight stretchy soft shell with reinforced knee... Best wishes Tom
Just not going to pay Samaya prices - especially considering there are perfectly good options out there for half the price AND those options don't have the brand name written in huge letters everywhere.
Wondering if anyone here know if the breathable fabric on the Samaya is the same as the one used on the Locus Gear Djedi? As far as I know these are the only two breathable DCF tents on the market. However, I was told that the Djedi is now no longer available due to the fabric discontinued.
Hi Alex, I deliberately steered away from some technical details in this video. I believe the audience for this is quite small. The 3 videos I have made regarding this tent were about my practical findings regarding breathability and other characteristics of this tent. I have however approached Samaya regarding your question, as from what I can find the Locus Gear uses event. This tent does not use event. It also uses DCF but for certain areas of the tent rather than combine the membrane with DCF... I hope this helps as so far I cant see anyone else jumping in on this... best wishes Tom
Spot of cognitive dissonance there Tom. As 'straight forwards' as attaching that vestibule is, I could easily pitch solo tent in its entirety the same time or less as it took to attach the additional section.
I appreciate you immensely setting up the vestibule with gloves on, because to me it would be in some cold scandinavian winter time conditions painful, bordering on impossible to do that without gloves. At this price level, Samaya have to be easy as well as inventive. I would not use this tent in Scandinavia spring/summertime, becsuse of insects when the Samaya lacks mesh, but with the vestibule it is a solid solo camper choice spring/winter. Great! I know you felt it was dark inside, but the video came across as providing a light spacious area. Their modular approach to textile and design is certainly unique. I wonder what Samaya’s marketing strategy will be - will they stick with niche mountain assault sales or try and break through to the main backpack camping users?

Hi Tom. As you know I was slightly unsure of the tent and a bit negative on the vestibule. Having seen the tent first hand, I have to say I’m converted. It really is a superb piece of technical kit and the detail in the design stands out. The strength and stability in near 40mph winds bodes well for sterner tests! The vestibule will always divide opinion but with practice it will become a slick process and it adds so much to the practicality. It will never be as easy to manage as a traditional tent vestibule, but then then a traditional tent doesn’t offer the modular design option and also most true 4 season tents with comparable strength and marginally more space will be a kilo heavier. The only thing I really dislike is the price as I want one lol. Cheers Gary.

It feels very premium and has definitely exceeded my expectations and they were high to begin with. The rain was a surprise and no drips through the vents which I thought could happen but it didn't.. Regarding the price that's a tough one but I feel Samaya are trying to follow a different path and develop new products themselves and fair play to them for that. The attention to detail is amazing and the build quality is perfect so I suppose every form of refuge has its price.. I just need that dyneema vestibule and I will find a way... Looking at treating myself for my 30th to either this or an Unna, which do you prefer? Hoping to use it on summits so need that extra bit of strength but aren't keen on the soulo!

Definitely not wide enough for two people. And shame about being so dark inside, but maybe that's to do with being designed for high altitude and very exposed to the sun use?
Hi Chris... this tent is designed as a minimalist shelter for two people and two can definitely fit... Not amazingly spacious for two but again its designed for having the potential to pitch on narrow ledges etc... Its is a little dark inside but really suits me for my particular needs... best wishes Tom
Hi Tom, I’m so close to purchasing this tent solely for winter in the northeast US. Any further comments on the tent that can help. The northeast US is typically cold/snowy. Planned use is from 1,000-5,000’ elevation, below and above tree line. I had my heart set on the Soulo but am now leaning this way. Not easy when no one over here has either to see in realtime. Hi Mike all tents have gains in some areas but sacrifices in others. The Soulo is just too small and heavy for me although it's very strong and durable.. The Assaut2 here is a kilo lighter without the vestibule and 400g lighter with it.. It also has way more space. This tent is also super strong when properly oriented into the wind.. The quality is also super impressive.. My camping partner bought this tent and also loves it after seeing mine and how well it performed in harsh conditions.. Pack size is also very small if that's of any value. I have now used the tent in at least 10 camps condensation free. Condensation is a slight risk though just as there is only a single wall between inside and out... The tent may also not be just as warm as a double wall shelter.. It's definitely a keeper for me for my type of camping.. I hope that helps and sure let me know what you decide and any more questions just ask.. best wishes Tom
Samaya just told me they weren’t restocking this tent in 2024. They are sticking with the Assault Ultra 2 and will be offering aluminum poles in addition to the carbon. No price or timeline given. May be priced out of these. Heard this?

I can not agree enough. I’ve put my Samaya 2.0 through poor weather on Cambria trail. Very stable. Always dry. You are tempting me to get the vestibule, it seems similar to Assault2.

What's it like if the wind backs or veers as sideways it presents a large area to catch the wind.? No matter the performance I think it being double the price of most other top class tents it's a bit crazy unless money is no object..
Thank you Gordon for your comments and watching of course.. The wind direction here did change slightly to the side and the tent actually has two guy points on each side just above the bath tub floor. These add a surprising amount of stability and work really well in practice.. I have always thought the same as you regarding the unsupported side panels of this particular set up. Most tents have stronger and weaker points and personally I think this tent has as strong a side wall as any tent of this design.. Regarding the price yes it's expensive and not for everyone. I don't wild camp intentionally in higher winds but have found myself camping on several occasions in winds of 40 mph plus and once in 60 mph plus, but thankfully I didn't pitch on those conditions. My current best specification tent for wild camping is the tried and trusted Terra Nova Voyager. I can see there are improvements in other designs but I can't justify the small gain in performance against the expense. Despite that I am still addicted to your reviews!

Tom, one thing I think you should mention about the selective use of DCF. Samaya is not using DCF on parts of the tent that are REALLY taking a lot of wind. This is very smart, as DCF doesn’t dynamically stretch the silnylon/poly etc. Engineers will tell you that strong structures need to have some “give” to them. DCF doesn’t have this give, so Samaya uses them in less critical areas. There’s footage of pure DCF tents in open ground high winds and they start to harmonically flutter. It looks and sounds bad!
Hey Matt I deliberately have kept these videos a bit less technical and more about the field testing and my findings. While I have some knowledge of DCF.. to get involved with this technically could open a can of worms that I dont want here on the channel from the many fans that feel its the be all and end all of tent fabrics... Regarding the selective use of DCF I cant find anywhere on the Samaya website that states this ( I could have missed it). I would have thought that there was less DCF on certain areas more to lack of breathability and costs. The ULTRA version of this tent uses more which increases the cost, keeps the strength and lowers the weight.. Thank you once again for your input and thoughts... best wishes Tom

Good video, Tom! You are putting this tent through it's paces. That vestibule really held up under the wind better than I thought it would. Pretty straight forward connecting the vestibule to the tent. Doing it with gloves on was a nice real world touch. Thanks for all you do. The work you put into these productions is very valuable information.

Great review, thanks Tom! I *love* having a big vestibule in wet weather, and it does make a lot of sense being able to leave it behind when you're pretty sure of fair weather.

Looks to me a good tent. May very well try one in the next couple months. The questions I had are covered. Mainly it doesn't leak, stable, quite, dark inside, I always try to to get a dark green because of that, the gap of the vestibule was covered. Small pack size, good for motorcycle adventure travel. Good job Tom. Thanks for your efforts. Now on to new tents. Take care. I'll bake in the heat and humidity a while longer.

I really hate watching videos like this as it shows how susceptible I am to wanting to buy things that I know I really don't need! ;D It's a decent looking tent - the first time I've heard of it to be honest - but it looks well designed and performs well. I feel there is a lot of doubt over single skins, but you have to remember the discipline this was made for, mountaineering when simple reliability is paramount. Good news and reviews so far on Samaya Assault 2. Appears the fabric is impressive given a semi-permeable. Workmanship also looks better than par for course in terms of seam work, zips, ventilation, featured hardware and quality control. I don't recall cost of this model? This is the model I liked of the couple you've exhibited from this company. The optional vestibule is a plus regarding versatility and longer term livability. It would be interesting to test this tent for outfitting here in Alaska. Real question is... would it be up to task? Really needs that more demanding sustained 55mph winds and raining sideways test outing 🙂

Hi Tom. Great reviews. Thanks to them, I seem to have found “my” tent for climbing 7 and 8 thousand mountains, but I still have doubts. In my past, in 1985-1992, I climbed 25 peaks over 7 thousand and 2 eight-thousanders (Everest and Dhaulagiri), all without oxygen. In those years, the tents were a little different, heavier, about 6 kg, and the ventilation was worse. 2 years ago, after undergoing hip replacement surgery, I started going to the mountains again and went to 2 seven-thousand-meter peaks. I bought all the necessary equipment, all that was left was a tent, with the choice of which I was completely confused in modern technological, super-light shelters. Over the past 2 months, it seems that I have gone through all types, brands and options, leaving Rab latok mountain, Black diamond Eldorado, Big agnes shield 2 on my list. Now Samaya assault 2 has been added, it seems ideal for my needs. It seems to me that of all the Samaya options, the wall fabric of Assault is somewhat similar to the material of the single-wall tents Rab, Black diamond and Big agnes. The material is stronger and withstands strong winds and abrasion much better than Dyneema. Am I right or wrong? Tell me, how has your opinion about the tent changed 2 months after you first met it? How does it perform in winds stronger than 40 mph? Does it flap a lot in the wind? Are there any tears, abrasions, etc.? Is ventilation still ideal in different conditions? Perhaps in the process of getting to know her, some other negative aspects appeared? Thanks again for your hard work? Hi really awesome to hear of your experience and your achievements are outstanding.... I have used the Asssaut 2 now I am sure 10 times... Before I got it I thought that it could work for me and after all the use I am definitely right. Yes the material is very strong and solid and the dyneema on the floor is also very thick to help with puncture resistance. Two months later it has proved itself in every way. Withstood 40mph winds with ease, and survived a condensation challenge when the outside air was cold damp and saturated but inside was warmer. The ventilation options are great even when the conditions are challenging outside. The only small negative I can think of is there is no way to fasten back the door on the vestibule (or maybe I haven't found it yet). You also need to be aware that its a single skin tent and on some occasions you are going to get condensation as there is no barrier between it and yourself... All tents can get condensation there is just no protective inner on this one. For me though this has not even been any issue at all... I really do love this tent and it offers so much protection and space for its weight.. I think I mentioned to you before but the quality is definitely the best that I have come across... Tom, thanks for your reviews. Thanks to them, I bought and received this tent today, it looks great, tomorrow I plan to test it on the mountain. According to the forecast there will be snow and winds of up to 60 km per hour, let's have a lot of fun. Tell me how to collect it? Roll it up like a carpet and place it in a bag, as the sellers sent it, or just gradually push it into the bag, starting from the back wall and ending with the open door, so that the air escapes. At the end of the review from Samaya, the girl simply stuffs it into a bag, but there is a slightly different tent, Samaya 2.0. I haven't found anywhere how to do this correctly?

Great video Tom, the Samaya stood up to those winds no problem, with the added bonus of zero condensation...but that's one expensive piece of kit. I'd guess it would easily be out of the price range of most tent users in this country. A very niche market indeed, tents like the Samaya's.
Excited to hear you're trying out a KUIU, I've had my Storm Star 2.5 yrs now & I'd pit it against any Hilleberg. Had my Mountain Star just over a year and it's my favourite go-to lighter weight option for 3+ season use. I also own a Summit Star, KUIU's sub 1kg trekking pole shelter, but tbh it doesn't come out as much as the other two. Yip, I have a soft spot and a lot of trust in the KUIU tent range.

@@TOMHEANEY100 P.S There's a specific way to pitch the Storm Star - or you'll put undue stress and tension on the poles. Those 4 metal clips go on first and come off last. Just been re-watching your Samaya videos after a couple of nights in my trekking tent: a Tarptent silnylon Rainbow 1, complete with condensation! I see the Assaut2.0 has half the moisture wicking rate of other Samaya tents which makes the lack of condensation in yours all the more impressive. I noticed also that the Samaya website suggests your 😊model is optimal for high winds (compared for example with the dyneema Ultra version).
Hi Peter, yes I took the risk with the less breathable fabric as I wanted a stronger tent and also wanted the vestibule on the lee side regarding wind resistance and shelter. it has worked exceptionally well as I have now used it on 6 amps and all have been great. I also knew that I pretty much only camp when its windy so I have had zero condensation... What do you think of build quality and construction from Tarp Tents I really fancy a Scarp 1 Ultra... You know how it is always looking.... Did not realise you had a Tarp Tent.... best wishes Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Glad to hear the Samaya is treating you well! Yes, I replaced my frustratingly small Enan with the T Rainbow as a low weight and fairly cheap shelter for low level hikes. The Rainbow is quite spacious but very difficult to pitch in any wind; not too bad once guyed with extra guys (it doesn’t come with any!). Build quality is excellent and it’s an ingenious design that allows you to adjust height of bath tub floor/side mesh while inside the tent. But it is fiddly and hooks, zips, zippers and tie backs are all tiny compared with Hilleberg’s. The nylon floor is very slippery and Tarptent advise painting sealant to it but dust/insects get attached to it 😆: not good if you like a pristine floor. With extra guys and a full range of pegs and a Tyvek footprint it weighs just over 1200g.

I enjoy your videos Tom, they have helped me greatly. In regards to storm worthiness would you lean towards the Soulo or do you think the Samaya would be up to the task? I have an Enan and want to add a storm worthy winter tent into the mix, and I have reduced it down to the Soulo and the Samaya 2.0. Wind, rain and snow loading capabilities would be greatly beneficial as Tasmanian winters can throw some fairly hard weather at times...
For weather resistance it would be the Soulo. 3 poles supporting a smaller structure. Soulo better for rain too as the Samaya has more open vents at the top..But the Soulo struggles regarding weight and space...But if you are happy with the space in your Enan then that shouldn't be an issue with the Soulo.. Really interesting design, we do wonder whether the modular concept is the future, there definitely is something to it. From looking at your excellent breakdown, it does look rather finicky however, and just not sure that’s practical in cold temperatures. A more robust clipping system like hilleberg could be a solution. All the best - BR

I am a big fan of the Hilleberg clipping system but the pole sleeves here on the main body of the tent mean that it's up super fast and then you just add the vestibule. Taking down thought you just need to remove the pole and everything else can just go straight into the one tent bag to sort at home.... best wishes Tom

It's very tight.. It just about fits two regular 20 inch wide pads.. It's extremely comfortable for one but a mimilist shelter for two... I hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

Hi Steven, thank you for watching. I have good experience with North Face 4 season tents but not any of the single skin assault tents I am afraid.. The North Face Assault 2 looks good but looks like its a bit heavier than this one and the fabrics not as high tech..Not so sure of that internal pole pitch either but to be fair I haven't tried it.... When you've given this two years of hard use, it will be interesting to see how the breathable fabric performs. But for all that, given the strength and low weight of modern Si Nylon flies the window for single skin tents has surely come and gone?

Hi I hope you are well.. YES I still have the Samaya and it's definitely a keeper for me.. It really suits moderate to very windy conditions for my camps. It's a little cold in full winter partly due to the fact that you have to ventilate and that means parts of the tent are open which creates drafts.. I have never had any issues with condensation but then I pick the occasions that I use it as I have other tents.. My friend bought one too and is just as happy with it as I am.. Quality is exceptional and super comfortable for one person.. I hope this helps and any further questions just ask as I would want to be delighted with the tent . Best wishes Tom
Interesting, I am attracted to the BD Eldorado but expect condensation issue being a bit much being single skin, seems this one is more breathable tho an reasonably strong too. Cheers Tom.

Great video series! Hard to find anything this detailed on Samaya tents... I wonder how the Assaut2 8K compares to the Locus Gear Djedi DCF-eVent Dome. Some differences are clear, like external vs internal poles and other features but seeing them one next to the other would be super cool. One thing I tend to favor in the Djedi is the presence of a tensioning cord on the largest side panels. Do you think the Assaut2 8K would benefit from these for wind resistance? (Those panels seemed to cave in quite a bit)

To be honest I am seriously impressed by the wind performance of this tent, and wind performance is my favourite subject regarding 4 season tents. There are two lower side guy points on this tent and they make a big difference. You should be able to see them at the top of the dyneema groundsheet... My friend and I were actually discussing the difference that they made to the pole stability and they actually support the side panel surprisingly well too.. BUT this design of tent like many other tents too still needs correctly orientated into the wind for best wind performance IMO. Best wishes Tom
Can the vestibule be left attached? So then you just add the poles next time and that's it?
Hi the vestibule attaches both to the top of the tent and the poles.. Yes you can leave it on but it will make threading the poles on your next camp more difficult as the vestibule will be in the way on top of the tent and you still will need to attached it to the poles at the 3 points.. I find I usually place all my gear into the tent before I attach the vestibule as when the vestibule is attached its a long way to the front of the actual tent to get your kit inside unless you get into the tent.. Hi Tom I have exactly the same tent with a vestibule. So far I have only stayed overnight in the snow with cold temperatures down to minus 30 degrees in the Swiss mountains. Unfortunately I always have slight crystallization and condensation. Somaya told me that it is important to set up the tent in the wind because of the good ventilation. I'm interested in whether there is no condensation even in heavy rain in warm weather of 5 degrees and higher WITHOUT (as in the video) strong wind. Have you tested this?
Hi thank you for getting in touch... You will always be able to find conditions that are unfavourable for EVERY tent... In the conditions that you describe I would use a different tent as I feel the Samaya is not best suited.. I own this tent because I knew it would suit the type of conditions I regularly camp in and thats windy environments that are exposed, just like Samaya recommend. It has performed perfectly with zero condensation...So I am afraid I haven't tested this as its not what the tent is designed for... I hope that this helps.. best wishes TOM

Hi I am afraid they are a very old Haglofs pair I got about 10 years ago.. They have lasted very well. Sorry they are not something recent you can buy... They are quite a lightweight stretchy soft shell with reinforced knee... Best wishes Tom

Wondering if anyone here know if the breathable fabric on the Samaya is the same as the one used on the Locus Gear Djedi? As far as I know these are the only two breathable DCF tents on the market. However, I was told that the Djedi is now no longer available due to the fabric discontinued.
Hi Alex, I deliberately steered away from some technical details in this video. I believe the audience for this is quite small. The 3 videos I have made regarding this tent were about my practical findings regarding breathability and other characteristics of this tent. I have however approached Samaya regarding your question, as from what I can find the Locus Gear uses event. This tent does not use event. It also uses DCF but for certain areas of the tent rather than combine the membrane with DCF... I hope this helps as so far I cant see anyone else jumping in on this... best wishes Tom
Spot of cognitive dissonance there Tom. As 'straight forwards' as attaching that vestibule is, I could easily pitch solo tent in its entirety the same time or less as it took to attach the additional section.

I appreciate you immensely setting up the vestibule with gloves on, because to me it would be in some cold scandinavian winter time conditions painful, bordering on impossible to do that without gloves. At this price level, Samaya have to be easy as well as inventive. I would not use this tent in Scandinavia spring/summertime, becsuse of insects when the Samaya lacks mesh, but with the vestibule it is a solid solo camper choice spring/winter. Great! I know you felt it was dark inside, but the video came across as providing a light spacious area. Their modular approach to textile and design is certainly unique. Hi Tom. As you know I was slightly unsure of the tent and a bit negative on the vestibule. Having seen the tent first hand, I have to say I’m converted. It really is a superb piece of technical kit and the detail in the design stands out. The strength and stability in near 40mph winds bodes well for sterner tests! The vestibule will always divide opinion but with practice it will become a slick process and it adds so much to the practicality. It will never be as easy to manage as a traditional tent vestibule, but then then a traditional tent doesn’t offer the modular design option and also most true 4 season tents with comparable strength and marginally more space will be a kilo heavier. The only thing I really dislike is the price as I want one lol. Cheers Gary.

It feels very premium and has definitely exceeded my expectations and they were high to begin with. The rain was a surprise and no drips through the vents which I thought could happen but it didn't.. Regarding the price that's a tough one but I feel Samaya are trying to follow a different path and develop new products themselves and fair play to them for that. The attention to detail is amazing and the build quality is perfect so I suppose every form of refuge has its price.. I just need that dyneema vestibule and I will find a way... The lack of condensation on a single-skin tent is impressive. Any time I try one of the Hillebergs with just the outer fly, the water pours off the inside of them. Here's a short clip to show an example of what it's like. th-cam.com/video/acvUeJFStqc/w-d-xo.html

Looking at treating myself for my 30th to either this or an Unna, which do you prefer? Hoping to use it on summits so need that extra bit of strength but aren't keen on the soulo!
I prefer the Samaya as I feel it's stronger and lighter.. But not as usable in all conditions due to it being single skin.. Build and quality is insanely good.. Tom
Definitely not wide enough for two people. And shame about being so dark inside, but maybe that's to do with being designed for high altitude and very exposed to the sun use?
Hi Chris... this tent is designed as a minimalist shelter for two people and two can definitely fit... Not amazingly spacious for two but again its designed for having the potential to pitch on narrow ledges etc... Its is a little dark inside but really suits me for my particular needs... best wishes Tom
Hi Tom, I’m so close to purchasing this tent solely for winter in the northeast US. Any further comments on the tent that can help. The northeast US is typically cold/snowy. Planned use is from 1,000-5,000’ elevation, below and above tree line. I had my heart set on the Soulo but am now leaning this way. Not easy when no one over here has either to see in realtime. Hi Mike all tents have gains in some areas but sacrifices in others. The Soulo is just too small and heavy for me although it's very strong and durable.. The Assaut2 here is a kilo lighter without the vestibule and 400g lighter with it.. It also has way more space. This tent is also super strong when properly oriented into the wind.. The quality is also super impressive.. My camping partner bought this tent and also loves it after seeing mine and how well it performed in harsh conditions.. Pack size is also very small if that's of any value. I have now used the tent in at least 10 camps condensation free. Condensation is a slight risk though just as there is only a single wall between inside and out... The tent may also not be just as warm as a double wall shelter.. It's definitely a keeper for me for my type of camping.. I hope that helps and sure let me know what you decide and any more questions just ask.. best wishes Tom
Samaya just told me they weren’t restocking this tent in 2024. They are sticking with the Assault Ultra 2 and will be offering aluminum poles in addition to the carbon. No price or timeline given. May be priced out of these. Heard this?

I can not agree enough. I’ve put my Samaya 2.0 through poor weather on Cambria trail. Very stable. Always dry. You are tempting me to get the vestibule, it seems similar to Assault2.

What's it like if the wind backs or veers as sideways it presents a large area to catch the wind.? No matter the performance I think it being double the price of most other top class tents it's a bit crazy unless money is no object..
Thank you Gordon for your comments and watching of course.. The wind direction here did change slightly to the side and the tent actually has two guy points on each side just above the bath tub floor. These add a surprising amount of stability and work really well in practice.. I have always thought the same as you regarding the unsupported side panels of this particular set up. Most tents have stronger and weaker points and personally I think this tent has as strong a side wall as any tent of this design.. Regarding the price yes it's expensive and not for everyone. I don't wild camp intentionally in higher winds but have found myself camping on several occasions in winds of 40 mph plus and once in 60 mph plus, but thankfully I didn't pitch on those conditions. My current best specification tent for wild camping is the tried and trusted Terra Nova Voyager. I can see there are improvements in other designs but I can't justify the small gain in performance against the expense. Despite that I am still addicted to your reviews!
