I didn't realize it until now, but that might be right. This might be the single greatest concentrated lag event in the history of an online game. What a fucking time to be alive.
It was truly epic, I've never experienced such lag, it surpassed even the previous massive battles of EVE. Truly a lag that will never be forgotten! A lot of good folk died there on that fateful day defending our space, alas I didn't see them die due to the lag, and when I was told we won I quite not believed it because due to the lag it seemed to me we were being crushed. A confusing experience, or a slideshow if you wish, truly magnificent!!!
This is my only issue with how fights in this game look... Whenever there's a big battle the capital ships are all just standing there in giant clusterfuck groups. It kinda destroys the coolness factor :P
I've always had the same thought about EVE. Sure, you have massive space battles taking place over the course of hours, with hundreds of ships taking part, but it doesn't look that impressive. There's the occasional explosion, constant weapons fire, and giant clusters of ships covered by big blue bubbles. Time dilation might allow these things to happen, but it kills any part of it that makes it visually impressive. The "coolest" thing I've probably ever seen in EVE was the Flight of a Thousand Rifters, when a swarm of tiny ships were orbiting a massive supercarrier, trying to take it down. The trailers are fantastic, showing actual fleets of ships fighting it out over long distances with missiles, railguns, lasers, etc., all punctuated by the main guns of a Titan decimating capital ships in one shot. What you actually get in the game is this, cluster fucks.
Formations that give bonuses to Offense and Defense! :D _Escorts, protect your carriers!_ _Fleet. Prepare to jump in 3...2...1...MARK!_ *queue Mass Effect 3 - The Fleet Arrives [Extended]*
it's like wondering why aircraft carriers move so slow and aren't as exciting as fast as missile destroyers - they're capital ships in a massive capital fleet engagement. if you wanna zip around in an exciting manner fly something small. there's tons of mobile fleet compositions. most people in this game can't fly small tackle for shit and yet it's like half of most fleets so don't tell me that it's too easy or boring
To save face i propose these sort of MMLF (massively multiplayer lag fests) games start adopting a new standard: seconds per frame. This way they can run the game reliably at 60spf and sound cool while their servers melt through the floor and drop a couple of stories...
I was next to the nyxes that accidently cynoed into the wrong cyno. I petitioned ccp to give me the loot that dropped because I legit could not open the wrecks roflmao.
Big fights are cool but can be hard to slug through. That's why i try to remain indepandant in EVE, the best part is, in the sandbox that's a perfectly viable choice.
Normancon br-5rb would cost less if replicated today . Production of supers, titans, and other capital ships is steadily decreasing the price of those ships. There's been an arms race for the past two years so both pan-fam and the imperium have been cranking them out and selling among themselves.
Servers arent Broken... Tell me a game where 6000+ dudes can fight against each other. It was a selfmade problem, when you use Fighters to attack from savety its no wonder that the tec reaches its limit.
I've been playing this game for almost 15 years. The servers are broken. They always have been. It used to not matter so much because u didnt have tidi and automagical i win repair timers on citadels and you didnt have 6-7k nerds trying to cram into one system. Now that they are a thing, the broken servers (yes broken) are now combining with shitty fozzie sov to form voltron. And what really takes the piss is CCP has the nerve to try to use it as a PR stunt. I will give you this though, it's true, there is no other game i know of where 6k people can stare at eachother from 1000 virtual km for 8 hours and nothing of any real event happen......
Seth hit the nail on the head. CCP better be ready for a lot of backlash in April during Fan fest.....I mean almost every decision CCP has made since they axed Dominion Sov is complete trash when it comes to game play, Fozzie sov sucks, if i wanted to do faction warfare and mine nodes i would fucking do that, New fighter mechanics suck because the server cant handle 45,000 fighters in a system, and Citadels are fucking dumb. What this fight did is set the upper limit for fights until the server code is brought into the modern age, Gone are the days when CCP can claim "biggest battle in EVE" news outlets wont pick up the stories about the fights because who cares about reporting on some games 20th biggest fight ever. I know ongoing joke for years is "Eve is dying" but this is the first time that Eve is collectively agreeing that the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
As 9-4RP2 is my home. And I was present for the battle. I will say that both sides fought well in the battle over the Keepstar. We are definitely proud and happy in our defense of the Keepstar, and it's survival. We look forward to the battles ahead. o7
CCP... stop. I love this game but these things are soul-crushing affairs. They're just broken, there's nothing fun about them, and I noticed that you had to go the 'dark and spooopy' route because literally nobody was fighting because the server lag was so bad. You need to find a way to spread the fight over several systems, like destroyable, manually repairable nodes control the keepstar or something. It's very obvious that the tech to support these fights isn't there yet, or you don't own it.
A nice idea. Spread the fight to several solar systems. I hope the pve stuff is improved, like allowing some corps or coalitions to bribe a npc faction to attack a player corporation or coalition.
almost 10 years ago, ppl complained the server couldnt handle 1200 players in one sistem, now ppl complain it cant handle 6000, and in 10 years ppl will whine cuz the server couldnt handle 30,000.
The only reason it survived, was because you couldn't reload your fighters(up to an hour), and you haven't fixed the repair timers. Please fix this problem, it happens too much.
No, you lost because your tactic was shit. It is well known that fighters break in heavy tidi and yet you still chose a tactic that relies heavily on them. That's like banging your head against a wall and then blaming the wall for your headache.
It's easy to call goons losers, they were the only ones risking anything by attacking a pretty much indestructible object. Citadel mechanics are fucking broken already and this video with pretty much everyone showing as tethered shows that off nicely. On top of that, ccp are making it worse soon by increasing citadel range even further and adding GTFO module to both forts and keeps, which will ensure no keep or fort will ever die again in tidi unless they actually tie the repair timer to tidi as well, which is the dumbest decision they have ever made, possibly aside from actually implementing fozziesov.
I didn't see anything happening, all i saw was a zoomed-out screen with red and blue squares blotting out the view and literally nothing happened for the half hour i stared at it, it was like watching paint dry.
Imagine being a tiny, innocent merchant vessel flying by. Everything exploding and being ripped apart around you. "I just wanted to sell space chips mannn"

They already have pretty decend Hardware. The Problem is that the "Node" is not optimized for multi-threading. and only uses a single CPU-Core. TiDi was the wrong move imho. Optimizing / re-writing the Code would change EVE Forever.
agreed, they might see higher returns on investment if they moved components of the game into a multi-threaded focused language like rust, since c/c++ multi-threading is extremely difficult to pull off without any massive number of bugs appearing.
Bad choice of advert here CCP yes largest group of players in one solar system yet nothing happened, servers couldn't handle it, we stare at black screens for hours. How about fixing you product? Most of us play for the engagements not for skins!
@arnevonjense Seriously, objectively this is a PR disaster for CCP once people are explained why this didn't turn into a major fight. Those people who sign up based on this fight will be told the realities surrounding it and realize just how bad of state the game is in. This isn't some goon conspiracy or some shit but actual concerns that CSM panels have brought up for years now that CCP has flat out ignored.
Think of another game that could even come close to this. Its not just an "easy fix, flip a button and all is good" type of thing. I really hope you understand at least that.
Biggest battle? There was no battle, it was nothing but a farce and destroying a couple hundred of fighters. Only an insignificant number of ships were destroyed and most of the action was on comms from people fuming and sighing frustrated over the terrible servers not being able to handle any of this. Oh, and this Over 6000 figure? That held for maybe 5 real time minutes, because after it hit 6020 people in system, over 2000 of them lost connection to their characters and they were denied from coming back to the system to save their ships, their expensive assets and in general trying to play the game. Good job.
Why does CCP create a video that makes it look like the event was boring with nothing really happening? Was there so much ti-di that CCP couldn't create a more interesting video?
TiDi by itself would have been no problem, even with the broken repair timer mechanic that ticks in real time. We planned for that. The issue was the game mechanics were not functioning. TiDi had nothing to do with it.
I like how some dudes are still saying "hey i was there" like they enjoyed it even though several people already said that everything went from awesome to shit show in like 20 minutes due to so many players logging in to 1 server and having the "Biggest online War!" Even though it was just a huge staring battle because of the 1 fps lag honestly *LMFAO*
CCP - id love to see you guys appoint an official observer that can embed with forces on either side... make an invulnerable observer ship with invulnerable entities that can be deployed and used for camera angles to make a great video. Also, supply that observer with the ability to record analytics to better understand what is taxing the server at any given time and how to rectify from a players perspective.
I love how CCP somehow thinks that using this for advertising is a good idea. Breaking news: *it's not.* This "battle" was a complete shitshow of lag and disconnection, and barely anything got done because of how absolutely bullshit Keepstars (and citadels in general) are. GG CCP, shit like this is why I unsubbed.
It's amazing how tone deaf they can be. As someone else here put it, "read the room". This is NOT the time to publicly advertise an event your players are upset over.
This is not all of eve, big fights are rare and there is more to do in this game, plus smaller 100 man flights are more fun imo. You should check it out more if you are interested.
You are right. However being able to fight a Keepstar of is important. Otherwise the major alliances just put Keepstars everywhere and suddenly become immune. I love EVE, but this was the last time I took part in such a fight until CCP fixed their shit.
agreed. I always tell friends if they want to get into EVE forget about the massive multi-thousand man battles, they are boring and laggy. Its the 200-400 man battles that feel just as big and awesome, with out the lag. Small gang pvp and ganks are also always fun, its about blowing someone up and stealing their shit. Dreadnought brawls without lag are some of the most fun I've had in this game.
The battle that never really happened thanks to lag and issues. I understand that many people on grid with fighters etc is a huge strain, but it is unfortunate. Hopefully something can be done to make the next one a success. Win or loose it just fun to be part of one of these, so long as the infrastructure allows it to happen.
How the hell was this footage even captured while the server was busy committing seppuku?! It makes the battle look so smooth. What they don't show you is me screaming at the screen because I clicked the launch fighters button yet it took a half hour for them to actually launch. Then another hour to even get to a target. Then I disconnected unable to log in for the rest of the fight. Good times. AT LEAST I GET TO SAY I WAS THERE :D
"A day of buildup and hours of fighting appeared to signal doom for the keepstar" But our shitty broken mechanics saved it and made sure no interesting fighting occured!
It makes me so sad to think I was born too soon to ever get to see an actual space battle... guess I'll never get to die like a hero on a massive space dogfight
If you look at the physics, space battles will be very anticlimactic. There will probably be a period with absolutely nothing to see, then a bright flash, and that´s it. In all possibility, vessels will try to stay the minimum amount of time in weapons range while trying to overheat the enemy, so they will spot each other, accelerate towards each other as brutally as possible, and unleash as much ordnance as their heat sinks allow as quickly as possible, and then drift apart at insane speeds, cooling off and assessing the damage. Dogfight-like manoevers are probably waay to energy hungry and heat heavy to ever be a viable tactic in vacuum engagements.
The music though! I remember when 2.5 k people used to bring the game to a halt in 2013, great job on 6k in one system, it is truly a feat giving on how old the game's code is in places
Can't believe it was only 6 years ago. I was there in my Scorpion. I set my alarm at 4 AM. Took me 2 hours before realizing I was dead, it was a massive lagfest. Fuck Goons anyway. I lived with this game during 10 years, it wasn't a game anymore. People don't understand when I tell them. I'll never come back, but it was an amazing experience. A human experience. 7o
I see a lot of people focusing in this one big fight. There is so much more than "massive" battles. Don't judge by this one flawed mechanic. The game is far batter than they show here. Small gang fights are the funnest thing you can do in this game.
for the people who don't understand, the server is not "running" with 6000 players, with 10% time dilation (TIDI), everything strolled at a snails pace with the game running at 1/10 real time so the only reason the keepstar wasn't destroyed was due to the fact that after 6 hours of "fighting" the invulnerability timer ran down from 15 minutes at real time when there was only really 90 seconds to destroy it in game
one thing was clear about this event, eve has one amazing extraordinary community, if only there was a way to raise the ceiling eve has the best single sharded experience why stop it with legacy code, think bigger ccp!!
I heard about this game and this event from a friend recently. Although from your posts it looks like it was in fact a kind of non-event, I'm still really interested in interviewing a few people about what happened, and about your experience of playing the game from the beginning. I'm making an audio documentary or art piece (I'm not sure what yet) about interactions with strangers - much of which obviously happens online. Anyway, in short, if you play this game, I want to talk to you! Reply if interested
Holy crap,6000 people in one star system?! Decrease the max player in the server. It probably lagged the people who were’nt in the fight. If they did this already, reply to me
Thousands of people not even playing EVE were watching and after this pathetic show, they will for sure not start to! TiDi until you vomit, disconnects and reconnection times of 30 minutes and above. Completely ruined the whole fight and the timer of the Keepstar kept going down in real time. Get your shit together, CCP - wasnt the first time.
It doesn't matter if you can have 6000 players "fighting" if the result is a total fucking shitshow. Not a second of the 4+ hours I spent on the keepstar grid yesterday was pleasurable, it was just frustration. What point is there in advertising biggest battle ever etc. if the experience you get in such a battle is on par with waterboarding.
CCP actually does constantly improve their servers performance. A couple of years ago the node would have already crashed before even getting anywhere near 3000. The issue is that we keep jumping in more and more people. PanFam still hat 1500+ dudes in their staging system when local had hit 6000 and I'm sure Goons had at least as many in theirs. If the servers could handle 6k we players would bring 8k and complain that the server can't handle it.
I quit EVE 9 years ago when it stopped being fun. Played it religiously for 4 years. Occupied the Fountain with CELES and lived my whole tour in 0.0. Then motherships, titans... bullshit!
Guys, what did you expect? Show me a gaming server which can handle thousands of people at the same place interacting with each other... it is a miracle the server didn't shut down completely.
That fight, battle was the breaking point for my participation in huge fleet fights. The tidi was so bad it was almost unplayable. Actually it was unplayable. I disconnected from the server multiple times. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy and love Eve online.
You guys seriously need to iron out the seams between system nodes. Allow multinode grids. Hell, even tidi multinode grids if it helps the cost of networking communication. Just dont have broken tidi with failing/missing functionality
Its strangely smouth in this video... > Players Reality : less than 10fps for most of players + time dilatation (time slowed by 90%) 5h > cycled 10 shots > hitted 4 targets when tryed to lock so many Connection lost during the fight > impossible to relog during more than 1 hour (lot of players in this case) Biggest Eve fight ? Realy ? The worst players experience too ! Problem known by CCP since long time but no solutions. Please do something to permit this kind of big fight with better game experience in the future, we pay to play, you remember ? :D
So all fellas below commenting CCP to upgrade there servers but never thought that each player network is different ? One guy is on 1gbps and the other on 1 Mbps and as far as I know one laggy person in a server affects it's quality. So, imagine 1000's at the same time. That shit atleast run and wait for the technological advancements of all Eve players that each one soon get 100mbps net and a decent PC to support the game at full extent.
Thanks to your servers last night that was is LONNG over. over 4k players were unable to stay in game connected steadlily and the remaining 3k were desperatly trying to move their ships or have some control over their ships.
So either they need to drastically redesign the game to handle bigger numbers, create a player cap per system, or change how large individual corporations could get.
was this the fight to destroy the keepstar that co2 had? cuz the actual fight surrounding the keepstar took more than 10 hours lmao. or at least how I remember it, though the surrounding skirmishes and fights were a ton of fun.

TiDi by itself would have been no problem, even with the broken repair timer mechanic that ticks in real time. We planned for that. The issue was the game mechanics were not functioning. TiDi had nothing to do with it.
Nothing happened. It was awful and there was no fight. I was there logged in for 11 hours and I regret it.
You left out the fact that your bad game mechanics surrounding TiDi and the repair timers NOT being subject to it are what saved the Keepstar.
That music makes me feel like I'm in space
So next "nothing will happend" is on monday they say?
Both sides are so demoralized that we all just want to give up and go home. Even the winning side.
Galileo Gaming LOL
CCP - id love to see you guys appoint an official observer that can embed with forces on either side... make an invulnerable observer ship with invulnerable entities that can be deployed and used for camera angles to make a great video. Also, supply that observer with the ability to record analytics to better understand what is taxing the server at any given time and how to rectify from a players perspective.
Bigger than B-R? Damn, that's impressive
I love how CCP somehow thinks that using this for advertising is a good idea.
Breaking news: *it's not.*
This "battle" was a complete shitshow of lag and disconnection, and barely anything got done because of how absolutely bullshit Keepstars (and citadels in general) are.
GG CCP, shit like this is why I unsubbed.
It's amazing how tone deaf they can be. As someone else here put it, "read the room". This is NOT the time to publicly advertise an event your players are upset over.
But they always did that. Biggest battle. Biggest heist. They can't stop that now can they? It's inertia marketing i guess :)
Literally no battle is happening here.
notice how it doesn't mention the obscene lag that was so bad people had to wait 5 minutes or more for a single command.
This is not all of eve, big fights are rare and there is more to do in this game, plus smaller 100 man flights are more fun imo. You should check it out more if you are interested.
Sabre nothing happened in this. Playing a game at 1 fps is garbage
Win or loose it just fun to be part of one of these, so long as the infrastructure allows it to happen.
the command burst @ 1:33 was me!!!!
\o/
Lol
How do you know
Enapay Estep because I was the only one in the middle of the NYX blob that was firing command bursts.
ccplease make eve great again
My salute to the defendants of Keepstar. You held your ground against numbers never before seen. o7
Good times. AT LEAST I GET TO SAY I WAS THERE :D
is the video free to use (i need stock for a music video)
"A day of buildup and hours of fighting appeared to signal doom for the keepstar"
But our shitty broken mechanics saved it and made sure no interesting fighting occured!
Even to this day, this is still the largest battle yet..
7o
No mention of the game-breaking tidi, no worries
No mention of the game being broken in general, either.
I didn't see a single shot! Where is the fight?
Amazing PR video CCP. You forgot to mention that your servers couldnt handle the "6000" players in a single star system.
If you like sci-fi games with epic PvP battles and a strong community, you will definitely going to enjoy Eve Online.
quick fyi it takes about 20 minutes to lock a target, an hour to lock your guns and maybe 2-3 to warp, good times
#blueballs where everyone sits at the connection screen waiting an hour to get online. This is AOL dialup in 2018
Brings back memories
"6000 players"
you mean like 500-1000 players and their alts?
I heard about this game and this event from a friend recently. Although from your posts it looks like it was in fact a kind of non-event, I'm still really interested in interviewing a few people about what happened, and about your experience of playing the game from the beginning. I'm making an audio documentary or art piece (I'm not sure what yet) about interactions with strangers - much of which obviously happens online. Anyway, in short, if you play this game, I want to talk to you! Reply if interested
Holy crap,6000 people in one star system?! Decrease the max player in the server. It probably lagged the people who were’nt in the fight. If they did this already, reply to me
due to inbuilt mechanics, it slows down that node on purporse.
Lol people will complain about anything. 6000 people in one system and it's still not good enough for the whiners.
C. M. Name what other game can have 6000 players fighting at once
Groza Dallocort "fighting".
Then motherships, titans... bullshit!
Now the truth: massive lag spikes, crashes, unplayable server.
End of truth.
Crazy it’s been two years
Wait...where was the battle??
Everything was lagging as shit.I still remembered getting involved in this fight.
Nothing says perspective like seeing a blob of carriers next to a keepstar and going man that's small.
I click f1 one time then went to sleep.. woke up a few hours later with my guns on cooldown.. was an amazing fight.
Eve online and Planetside 2 are the only games that can be considered “massive multiplayer online”
Imagine the immense lag though
Its strangely smouth in this video...
> Players Reality :
less than 10fps for most of players + time dilatation (time slowed by 90%)
5h > cycled 10 shots > hitted 4 targets when tryed to lock so many
Connection lost during the fight > impossible to relog during more than 1 hour (lot of players in this case)
Biggest Eve fight ?
I was there :) Pandemic Horde! For The North! Noah Volkov
WHY in TD keepstar timers does not slow!? Why many people couldnt 2 hours undock from lags!?
I was very surprised that the servers didnt blow up and eve online having to find ways to gain compensation and blame us.
RIP Everyone's Internet
With walking in stations most people would be peacefully chilling inside and it would be a reasonable sized battle ;P
Thanks to your servers last night that was is LONNG over. over 4k players were unable to stay in game connected steadlily and the remaining 3k were desperatly trying to move their ships or have some control over their ships.
so... the scope got fired?
With all of the community team, it would seem.
Recorded on my birthday? Neat.
So either they need to drastically redesign the game to handle bigger numbers, create a player cap per system, or change how large individual corporations could get.
Timers not effect of tidi. Thx CCP
Yes, so many TiDi. But don't care, it was awesome for me to participate for my first (but not the last) heavy TiDi fleet.
Ever since it went free to play most of the hardcore players which spent years playing have left. It really sucks now..
LMAO quote from somewhere in the comments "took 30 min for my bomb to launch, then it exploded right in front of me due to lag and killed me"
lets hope that the next hardware/server upgrade will make battles like this playable without this deadly lagging.
And where is the battle itself?
Can I go back to watching paint dry is more fun.
was this the fight to destroy the keepstar that co2 had? cuz the actual fight surrounding the keepstar took more than 10 hours lmao. or at least how I remember it, though the surrounding skirmishes and fights were a ton of fun.
Please show actual footage with tidi!!!!!!
Now im in the horde corp but i was inactive due to reasons and i didnt even know we had a big battle that day😢
Who came up with the 1m USD battle announcement anyway?
My brother participated in this batlle and i would see all the batlle was incredible
It took me a moment to realize EVE made this video 😆
