3:37 You know whats funny? The thing of "Gift Pokemon automatically being send to the PC if your party is full" didn't started until GEN 6! So this thing existed from Gen 1 to Gen 5!

@@CritoBlue This isn't true, in Emerald the castform goes directly to your PC if you've got a full party. It doesn't do this in Ruby/Sapphire, though. I think it's just inconsistent and based on specific Pokemon.
@@CritoBlue I mean if it's in gen 3 it's not removed in gen 3 lol. They are just inconsistent with it. I have no idea why they do anything. Personally, I prefer the gifts that don't go to you when you have a full party, so that I can reset for it on my own time later in the game.

One way to cut down on time would be to just breed the ones of the multistage evolutions than having to replay the games multiple times for several of the mons. Now whether that's part of the self imposed rules or not would be a determining factor.

Another great video! I did not know that about repel and Chansey. And that always puzzled me about Tyrogue when Gen 1 had no problem just transferring pokemon like that (Hitmonchan, Lapras, Porygon, etc.) to your box even if you had a full party.

My preferred Mean Looker is Haunter/Gengar at L39, with Hypnosis and Night Shade, and whatever 4th move you want for coverage. This also covers the repel trick.

I completely forgot Slugma was a gen 2 Pokémon. Like I knew it, playing gen 3, but at some point it stopped registering in my head. Magcargo is so cool, I love gen 2 but I will always question why so many of them ended up in Kanto instead of Johto.
Seeing Houndour and Slugma in Kanto is like seeing Ralts and Shroomish in Unova. It makes literally no sense.

@@mysteriousstranger6121 Oh I only knew that one was gen 2 because I almost always grind for it early in the game because it's a fun(?) rare pokemon to get. I think I just have it in my head to always get it. lol
On top of that they didn't fix their encounter in remake.

You have a really cool video style, the only early Gen game I played was yellow so it really fun to watch these since I have have t touched anything earlier than fire red and leaf green
I liked how the Pokédex description for Chancey perfectly fit the situation.
I think evolution stones are one of the two biggest reasons to make crystal either the main file or the secondary file that has to reach kanto if youre filling up the dex -
In crystal, each elemental stone has a trainer who can call you to gift one to you. If you want to farm them, you can talk to mom and ask her to switch daylight saving time on and off, i usually get a call every 2-3 times i do this, which lets you farm the stones
The other reason I mentioned, theres one less roaming legendary in crystal. Suicune is a static encounter that wont flee (altho that doesnt work for this challenge since theres the stipulation of having to catch it on main file if at all possible, but its definitely worth considering if anyone else is planning on this journey!)

Every time I watch this series it makes me want to continue doing this myself on my copies. Its amazing that people still hold the old games to their original catch phrase and I'm all for it. Remember Its not pokemon gen 1-3 if its not "Gotta catch em all!"

It's funny how useful Parasect is for catching here because its alpha version is also extremely useful in legends Arceus.

The only reason I knew it was from gen 2 was the card came. The video game went out of its way to hide slugma and magcargo for some reason. Why design it if you’re gonna hide it away? Those two aren’t exactly mew…

I used to think that swalot was a gen 4 mon, since they liked to do useless one off pokemon a lot early on, and gen 4 gave a lot of pokemon some actual usage with how many evos they introduced instead of original pokemon
Same can be said about skarmory.
I think at least one Kanto trainer in Gen II has a Slugma, and I know Blaine in Gen II has a Magcargo.
Some suggestions, maybe these can help someone else or if you ever do a gen 3 living dex... 👀
It's probably easier to get Crobat and the like by catching a low level Zubat and then level it up in the E4, since every gained level also adds friendship. Though I'll assume you got the Lv. 51 Golbat mainly so you won't have to grind levels since you'll use Crobat for Mean Look.
Another suggestion, it may be more time efficient to just breed rare Mons like Chansey and keep the egg in your party while doing stuff that requires a lot of moving around. That's at least from my experience, sometimes spending a full hour for even a 4% encounter...
Anyway, another great video. Seeing the dex coming together one by one is really satisfying. 👌

I used my master ball on Raikou because screw it I caught Suicune and Entei. I might as well finish the treo. I added Entei to my team because I needed a fire type.

mmm I kind of want to make a complete dex in gen 2 (not living, just a whole dex, since I made a living dex in gen 6). there's a lot of critters that will hard to track down but I'm kind of looking forward to it

Completed my first and only Living Dex on Pokémon Ruby way back in the day before I knew that's what it was called. Gen III really was just nonstop Pokémon content for me. xD

There's a trainer house in, I wanna say Vermilion City, where you go to the basement and fight a trainer. That trainer is whatever save file you last exchanged Mystery Gift with- so you could potentially set this to a trainer with six lvl100 Blissey who all only know Tail Whip.
Or dupe rare candies with the pokémon duplication glitch, and just feed those to get levels. 😂

You keep Parasect with
False Swipe/Spore/Flash/Cut
You take Gengar with
Headbutt/Mean look/Rock smash/Strength
And then you use Lugia/Dragonite with
Fly/Surf/Waterfall/Whirlpool
...I know they're not super easy to get, but at least it's possible !

Actually you can use a repel and go get tyrogue with an enpty alot in your party. Then catch everything else on your way out
for evo stones more in spirit of this challenge would be getting them in g2 game and trading them to tthe other game, though that's probably way too painful to bother

My dream team using strictly Johto Pokémon is:
Feraligatr, tyranitar, espeon, heracross, ampharos, crobat (can be replaced with umbreon)

Ah, i was excited to see of the dream team would be made the way i do team comps in pokemon games - ridiculously overcomplicated to the point of not being worth it. In gen 2, you can increase your egg shiny odds to 1/64 in some cases, so i like to do that and get shiny members for my team. I've also bred for specific hidden powers that unlock pokemon with otherwise mediocre movesets (getting bug type hidden power on scyther, for example. In gen 3 my favorite was steel type hidden power on mawile). Silly egg moves that may or may not increase a pokemon's effectiveness are a must (hypnosis and faint attack on ninetales - done that one in multiple early gens).
Don't get me wrong, what you did makes waaaaaay more sense. I just like overcomplicating things to get a unique experience.

7:30 I am somewhat surprised that you wouldn't know which moves are Gen 2 and which aren't. The amount if effort you go through for a living dex paints you as quite the Pokemon expert

if i remember correctly moonball is actually broken in gen 2, and work only the same as a normal pokeball due to bad coding

Indeed there is! But considering we are trying to "Catch 'em all" and Shuckle isn't that difficult to encounter, I thought it would fit the challenge better to get one ourselves. On top of that, we can technically give the Shuckle back to the trainer later on in the story.

Yeah there's a few pokemon I just never saw in gen 2 as a kid. I thought for sure slugma and skarmory were gen 3 for years.
I played gen 2 religously and stuff like that made me doubt I was a fan at all.

And I adore Houndoom, but never really saw it in a normal gameplay. Never had one in the gen 2 games.
And I throught that slugma was gen 3 for some time... Yes I played pretty casually, but it is strang that they hide them so much. ( I know they wanted to expand the 1st games with gen2, and made some gen2 pokemon rare because they wanted nobody asking "where were those (gen2) pokemon when i played gen1?" but I still thing it's strange to hide them like that...)

Now that I've look at the sprite again, I do remember the lugia one actually...
Yeah! I learned about the bat sprite as I was playing, and it quickly became one of my favorite details in the game :')
Also, someone mentioned during the streams they thought Slugma was Gen 3 because it was so rare. Judging from the video comments, it is a very common misconception; it shows Gen 2 did TOO GOOD a job making hidden encounters.
I literally wont start a new game anymore unless I have my dream team before I even hit the first gym; and that's all eggs and no cheats.
Why not damage ho oh to increase its catch rate
