Thank you very much for the response and your many insightful comments. Here is the answer to the most common remarks you had:
→ "When did you get Celebi/Mew?" - In part 2 of the series ( th-cam.com/video/57F9W3db3HM/w-d-xo.html ) where I play Gold, Red and Crystal. The 2 Mythical Pokémon are both caught near the end.
→ "You should have used XXX Pokémon for the Beasts!" - One important thing to consider: in Gen 2, a sleeping Pokémon CANNOT flee. Making Mean Look completely useless. The only 2 factors that matter are the base Speed of the Pokémon and the accuracy of its sleep move, which influenced my choice a lot. Also, Jumpluff is SOOOOO cute. That's the main reason.
→ "Why didn't you catch Suicine in Crystal?" - The furthest I got in Crystal was Ecruteak City. My main version for this challenge was Pokémon Silver, so I did not have the opportunity to do it.
→ "If you played Gold several times, why only one Master Ball?" - I went back to Gold several times, but it was on the same savefile, so I only had 1 extra Master Ball at my disposal. I... kinda... used it on... Teddiursa. Yeah. You can watch me make that mistake in a previous video. It was dumb, but coming from Gen 4, I was convinced roaming Pokémon were not going to be an issue, and that I would not even need 1 Master Ball, let alone 2. How wrong I was.
Once again, thanks a lot for the kind words, corrections and tips. I try to read every comment. If you ever get a thumbs up out of nowhere, it's most likely me :'D

If you want a simple piece of advice for Gen 3 onwards. Catch a smeargle. Smeargle learns Sketch. You can sketch the following three moves: Spore, Ingrain, False Sweep. This should help in theory to stop in the FR/LG games the pokemon from escaping.

That was actually part of my strategy trying to catch them early in HeartGold. The one good thing about roamers is that they won’t attack unless trapped, so you technically get to freely set them up without retaliation. Then getting to flee while asleep means that I can set that up early too, meaning I get 4 free turns-and thus 3-4 catch attempts-before they can even attempt to nuke the trapper that’s half their level.
Funnily enough, for all the effort I put into this…in two different files, I didn’t even use them all that much. Which isn’t to say they aren’t useful: catching Raikou ASAP can be huge when the sea routes between Olivine and Cianwood are still coming up, and Entei should be good for Pryce and the Ice Path. By the time you get to Clair, though, they both kinda fall off. Doesn’t really help that, even as a casual campaign only player, I’m not impressed by their starting movesets.

Nice job! I also completed gen 2 and have a few notes on the legendary beasts.
    1. Mahogany town is a good location to find them but route 38 from ecruteak city is slightly more efficient
    2. Super repels are more efficient then max repels. Maxes last to long
    3. Manually checking the beasts locations is only more efficient with specific routing. It's better to just keep soft resetting after your super repel runs out.
    4. There's a song on the radio that slightly ups your efficiency
    5. Jynx is better to use as it learns lovely kiss, I'm pretty sure it can be caught at level 40 and I believe it also knows mean look
    6. You were right to use the master ball on the yellow one because it is the hardest to catch. The other 2 present little difficulty when properly prepared. You'll get an encounter every 2-5minutes on route 38 and they can't flee against a properly kitted out jynx.
    7. Info on legendary beasts is slim to none so I don't blame you for not knowing. I found the gen 2 shiny hunting community was quite knowledgeable on the subject.
    7. There's also a lot of very niche info like roamers will never go to the last route you were on or they have a 1/27(I think?) chance to just randomly teleport across the map but I'm not an expert in that regard.
    10. Happy to see your doing gen 3. That's when things really start to get hard. I'd advice that you start off with a regional dex in ruby/sapphire. And, if you value your time, DO NOT USE EMERALD. when I did a gen 3 national dex I did
sapphire regional dex--->leafgreen regional dex----> johto cleanup in emerald---> ho'oh and lugia in the gamecube games.
Johto cleanup can be done in the gamecube games in much less time but I wanted to only use the spinoffs as little as possible so I did that in emerald which easily added 20ish hours to my run since it requires 3 completions of the emerald regional dex

This was my dream as a little child with a Game Boy Color. My very first Pokémon game was Silver (which I still have). I was born in Argentina, and the information about these games was scarce and very difficult to find in the '90s. I only had one schoolmate who had a Game Boy, Pokémon Gold, and a Link Cable. Both of us had no clue about trading and evolutions. We were just having fun as kids. Nothing technical. I was never able to catch 'em all. Watching this series of videos somehow makes me revive that childhood dream, but I think that Professor Oak's response feels like a joke. All those hours and effort just to get such little recognition? Maybe this game was not created for that purpose. Maybe it was all about making you look for all 251 forever and ever.

I remember my own old strat for catching the roaming beasts was to have a level 40 Haunter with Mean Look and Hypnosis, and I set myself up at the edge between routes 38 and 39 (the two routes between Ecruteak and Olivine).
I chose that spot because both routes have grass and can have the roaming beasts appear on them, so instead of changing locations twice by going into and out of a town, I could just change locations once (by going from 38 to 39, or from 39 to 38) between each pokedex check.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, if Entei or Raikou uses Roar, they stop existing due to a glitch. In order to catch them after this, you need to reset the game back to before you triggered their roaming and retrigger it.

In practice, it meant I skipped some relevant parts while drawing attention to less important but more fun aspects of the challenge.

It is technically possible but pretty frustrating. Getting all the gen I starters with only Leaf Green (which is mandatory because of Slowpoke) would require you to fully finish the game 3 times in order to trade with RSE. You can also use only RS or SE because you can get the remaining Pokemon from the GameCube games that you have to play to get Lugia, Ho-Oh, Jirachi, and an easy way to get the Johto starters and the legendary beasts. So you can play only Sapphire, Emerald, LeafGreen, Colosseum and XD, but adding FireRed is much more practical. You have to use Sapphire because Lunatone is exclusive, while you can get Zangoose from XD.

19:32 going to a town for this is not a good plan.
The best hunting ground is the spot where Sudowoodo blocks the way.
There are 2 routes and 1 town adjacent to each other and they are in the middle of the map, so the chances for the beasts to run there is higher.
You can effectively force them to go into either of these 2 locations and use violet town if you need to "skip a turn".

Hey, I wanted to give some advice for people that want to complete the living dex (or just catching the beasts in general) that I found while catching the roaming beasts earlier this year:
First of all, I recommend using your master ball on Raikou. Raikou has quick attack, so it can flee before you are even able to attack with any pokemon. Crobat has a higher base speed than Raikou and Jumpluff, so the reason that Raikou was able to flee was because it was able to use quick attack and have a priority flee. Also, all the beasts have roar, so keep that in mind.
A pokemon I highly recommend for this would be Gengar because of the high base speed, hypnosis, and mean look. If you can't get Gengar, Jynx would be another good pokemon because of mean look and lovely kiss (higher accuracy than hypnosis), but you would need to make sure you pump it full of speed EVs (0 IV Jynx filled with 10 Carbos has the same speed stat as a 15 IV Raikou, so you might need to grind on a few wild pokemon as well). Haunter has the same base speed as Jynx , but has the less accurate hypnosis. Jumpluff is another good option if you don't care about mean look (as you can see from this video), but I prefer using mean look. It is up to you though! It is still your challenge!
Finally, a few places online said that going back and forth between two routes actually decreases your chance of finding the legendary beasts, so a good place to grind for them is biking in a circle between Violet City -> route 32 -> Ruins of Alph -> route 36 -> Violet city and so on. After switching to the circle method, I was able to find the beasts in minutes after my old back and forth method would sometimes take 30+ minutes to get an encounter.
Good luck fellow trainers! Feel free to add onto this if you have tips of your own! Also, amazing content Lyra! I've been binging these the past few days, and I'm super excited for the gen 3 living dex challenge!

I completed a living Dex in Gen 2 back in the day when I was young and barely understood the games mechanics in the first place! It was SUCH a pain but felt so proud to complete the Dex :D

  • @ThePurplePeppy
    @ThePurplePeppy ปีที่แล้ว +5

Now onto the funniest generation when it comes to catching them all: generation 3! The bare minimum you would need to make a living dex in generation 3 are: a GameCube, a GameCube controller, a GBA (DS wont work, not compatible with GBA trading devices), a Gamecube to GBA adapter, Emerald, both Fire Red and Leaf Green, XD Gale of Darkness (Ruby and saphire pokemon not in emerald can be caught here and it is required for Lugia (without Navel rock event)), and Colosseum (just for Ho-oh, assuming no navel rock event (completing fresh mt battle attempts are required for jhoto starters in XD gale of darkness so it would be wise to get the easier to obtain mid stage jhoto starters here instead if you're already playing this for the Ho-oh)). Remember there is no way to get gen 1 and 2 pokemon onto the 3rd gen games so this isn't just for the sake of a strict gen 3 only challenge, all of this was actually necessary for anyone who wanted all of the pokemon in one of these games! Also, out of all the games I mentioned, outside of trading directly between Fire Red and Leaf Green, you actually had to beat these games fully to connect to another one of the games so have fun playing through the entire game again for one time pokemon like the Hoenn starters!

I hope you see a lot of success because your content is a lot of fun.

They are not executed poorly, these mechanics have aged poorly. Big difference. Back in the early 2000's the color follow ups to RBY, were quite frankly amazing. Breeding opened up trading first-stage evolution to your starter, without having to restart the game, just think of how amazing that is.

The breeding is clearly done badly, so much so the very next game introduced multiple tweaks to fix it. Same for post elite 4 content. Same for roaming legendaries.

Gen 2 (Gold) was my first pokemon game. Since then, I have to do a play through every year for nostalgia sake.
I just beat Lance with my own 3 Dragonite, Typhlosion, Umbreon and Lapras. It took far to long to breed and raise each Dragonite but it was all worth it when they demonslished Lance's hacked and underleveled ones.
I wish game freak would make another game that captured the charm that Gen 2 had (regardless of the flaws this Gen had). Everything recently just feels soulless.

It's one of those rare times in pokemon where I feel like I'm actually being challenged, and it's so much more fulfilling than catching legendaries that the game leads you to through its story.

Back in the day, I did a living Dex on Pokémon Silver too, but with another crazy rules, like all Pokémon have my OT name and all should be male except for the ones that can't be, I remember that was a long and fun journey, at the end the only Pokémon that I need to complete the Pokédex was Kindra, I did it and was so proud and exited about my accomplish; then the day after I reach that the battery of the cartridge died, so.. I never tried again another living Dex but watching your video bring me back some joy of those days, maybe I'll do it again but this time with Pokémon Crystal. By the way, I found more easy to organize the Pokémon with Pokémon Stadium 2 that help me a lot with the mission. great content I really enjoy it.

Is there a reason why you didn't caugh Suicune in Crystal, since there it's easier to catch one? Or do you just caugh one in Silver to 100% the file?

Fun to watch you work this out, without any internet knowledge etc as a kid I came up with my own strategy. Haunter / Gengar - meanlook (always to begin), and maybe hypnosis or another TM which gave me sleep. I had another damage move and got all three down to a slither of HP too. Always started with meanlook, but never switched because I worked out meanlook ended. I accepted the risk of roar turn 1, on average I hit more sleeps after meanlook, I don't recall understanding speed mechanics well.
Also I didn't know the locations refreshed walking between routes, so I'd fly to a pokecenter and check the map, walk away, fly back, until they appeared in the grass next to me. I didn't use your repell idea either so I just had to run away from a lot of commons!
Alas I caught all 3 eventually, it felt amazing and this video really took me back to that time and grind. Thanks for the memories!

Sir Ender would have been the Ideal for the Beasts. If you got him to a high enough level, you could have used False Swipe to Guarantee the best catching odds, then use Spore to next time you see it. It would make it so that you only have to encounter them a minimum of 2 times without the use of repels. You could even use ZE ENDO to still put them potentially put them asleep while still using the Repel trick, then switch to Sir Ender to False Swipe the next turn, given that their HP lost stays for each encounter.
All of that is in hindsight though.
I'm incredibly hyped for Gen 3. Emerald was the only game I ever came close to having a living Dex as a kid, only being 6 Pokemon off! (Mostly just the mythicals)

    • @theinsanegamer1024

It'd be good but it's not particularly fast, either, they would flee before he escaped. The perfect move set for it but not the right stats.

    • @ThunderToast97
      @ThunderToast97 ปีที่แล้ว

@@theinsanegamer1024 As long as the Sir Ender was at least level 85, and no weird DV stuff was going on, he would always out speed even Raikou. Thus, Spore turn 1, can't escape, False Swipe until 1 HP, Repeat Spore and balls until captured. (Though, if level 100, False Swipe would be a 2 shot rather than a 3-4 shot at level 85).

    • @ThunderToast97
      @ThunderToast97 ปีที่แล้ว

@@theinsanegamer1024 However, after further investigation, getting the ideal Parasect is harder than I thought in Gen 2.
First, for False Swipe, that would require breeding with Scyther, which we all saw how long breeding can take, then leveling him up from a baby all the way back up into 85.
And the real kicker, if you wanted Swords Dance to things more consistent, especially for Suicune, you would have to transfer a Parasect from Gen 1 that had learned it by TM, because there is no TM for it in Gen 2 and Scizor, for whatever reason, can't pass it down to Paras through breeding!
      Gen 2 was Wild.

    • @theinsanegamer1024
