  • Welcome along to the next Obsession Engineering project. Dave has treated himself to a 'new' 1998 Yamaha R1, bought from a friend it just needs putting together. What could possibly go wrong?

    I'm not even sure how I found this video. I don't own an R1 and wasn't interested until I sat and watched this completely transfixed. Subscribed and currently looking to buy an R1.

    Nice project,I am original owner of 1998 blue R-1 with 55k trouble free miles,make sure your bike has had the clutch basket recall done as it can fail-krack apart under severe use,check by steering head numbers for 2 punch makers indicating it was replaced,enjoy your ride!

      It has been done, although I wasn't especially aware of it. Luckily my mate who'd had it before me worked in a Yamaha dealer and made sure it was right

    Finding a tool. Excellent. The yin that offsets the yang of losing a tool at the scrapyard. One makes your heart flutter in ecstasy whilst the other makes it miss a beat in despair.

    The problem with the early r1s is the fuel over flow pipes are directly clamped above the exhaust, so when you slide off, the bike goes up in flames as mine did at the silverstone circuit. The fuel lines were like this from the factory, mine was the 99 r1. Loverly bikes and better when tuned.

      I'll keep that in mind, though hoping not to throw it down the road to test!

    I just overhauled my 2000 motor. Had the second gear slip. Put new rings in to with a good hone job. Wast that hard. The hardest part was getting the flywheel off to split the cases. Broke 2 pullers. Had to cut the fukin thing off i had a spare.

    Enjoyed watching this. I too have a Jigsaw bike but it's only a ZZR600 with all the bits I've obtained since I got my first ZZR600E7 six years ago. Just come in from my garage now where I go to avoid human contact with folk. Back in the day I would have been called a hermit but it all seems quite normal to me! :-)

    The clock problem might be the main connector block that you had to fit. It's very common for those connectors to corrode. You can buy a new block and repin it. I had to do this to mine.
    Good luck with it.👍

    Low volts to the clocks in idle will do that. My fzs1000 clocks would go off when headlights on high beam unless the revs were well up.

    98 gauges were notorious for giving problems I have 2000 model gauges on mine.... actually I only have a 98 chassis everything else is the 2000 model ......205 differences. Everything is pretty much interchangeable except the starter motor internals and electrics

    Stumbled across your video due to the R1 content. And your name rang a bell. I think we raced bikes with BMCRC in the same era - 2001-2003?
    And to add to the nostalgia I owned a 1998 R1 from new back in day. I put 98,000 miles on it riding it to work. I was all excited to get to 100k miles but someone stole it!
    And do you recall an old good friend of mine Adam Polczyk - I think he raced in SS400 with you at some point.
    Will be following this R1 build with interest.

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, you're right, we did race with Bemsee at the same time and I remember Adam too. Good times back then! Might have to find another 400 to build, lol.
      Shame your bike got nicked, still some strong miles on her though

    Great to see another project underway, looks very clean as a starter and I'm sure you'll have it fighting fit for the warm weather!
    I'm sure you'll check everything over, but looking at the rear indicators, looked like the right one may be fitted incorrectly with the drain cut out at the top. Ask me why I check for this on my second hand bikes of this period now...

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well spotted! The right hand mirror isn't available so it's a left fitted upside down. I do have a right hand lens to sort it out though

    0:35 what did you mean by RIM mounted brakes?

    • @owen368
      @owen368 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At one point many many many years ago some bright spark came up with idea of only having the brake surface of a disc brake with out the middle bit that holds it to the hub by bolting said brake surface to the rim of the wheel like an extra rim on inside edge of wheel, down side as I recall is more weight on edge of wheel has more effect than in the middle.

    • @knopv
      @knopv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@owen368 Like Buell used to do I guess....

    • @owen368
      @owen368 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@knopv Could not remember who tried it but they sound likely as they also tried fuel in frame if memory serves.

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, Buell used the idea, and there were some after market versions. The disc was fixed directly to the inside edge of the wheel rim. Good idea to allow bigger diameter discs. Just didn't catch on

    • @DoRC
      @DoRC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@obsession_engineering oh okay. I'm familiar with the rim mounted brake on a Buell I just didn't know that the aftermarket had made them for other bikes.
