How I did a Flip Flop Thru Hike on the Appalachian Trail

  • I've had so many people ask me how I did my 2020 Appalachian Trail Flip Flop thru hike since it was so different than most past thru hikers. In this video, I give a complete breakdown of my hike and show exactly how I hiked the trail on a map and also go over how many zeros and neros I took as well as how many total days I was on the trail and how many hostels and hotels I stayed in.

Great recap. You shaped your hike to meet your needs and as a result got the most out of it. Kudos to you - most people are afraid to think outside the box. Thanks for sharing

Braids came up with a new kind of thru-hike: the Spasm. From now on, a Spasm is a thru-hike disrupted by unexpected events pushing the conscientious backpacker to leave the trail for weeks or longer, to flip-flop, boomerang, NoBo, SoBo, Whichever-Way-Bo, for many days or weeks, resolutely knowing that there is nothing that will prevent the backpacker from completing the magical, mysterious, magnificent experience.

I started following you when you started the trail. I admire the support of your Family, I know you had to all make sacrifices. I admire your bravery to follow your dream and your strength and tenacity. I admire your ability to fight the loneliness and pain and your ability to conquer fear. I love your honesty and integrity. You have done only what I dreamed of doing. Now I’m 63 and my knees are failing me and I know in my heart I will not fulfill this dream so I have found other dreams to follow. Still, I have enjoyed every moment spent watching you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for so unselfishly sharing your dream. 😊

Good Morning Braids. Thanks for sharing all your great knowledge and experience with those who of us who are prepping for our hikes (-63 days😃) Whenever I watch your videos I've got like 5 additional tabs open with the AT Interactive map, google maps, analyzing weather charts, gear, and anything you may mention (product/hostel) etc. Always learning! Cheers to you and Jerry!

You know I was thinking, I heard your husband say he would like to hike the PCT, but that he wouldn't be able to take off more then one month to hike. Maybe you guys could think about maybe section hiking the PCT together. Just do it one month at a time, and you could still finish the entire trail in about six years. Best part you could cherry pick the weather. Time each section for the best possible weather. Maybe it could be a great adventure for the two of you. 🙂👍

Oh my!!! Gretchen, Braids! How awesome this video is!! You rock!!! I watched every one of your AT hikes and couldn't hardly wait to see the next day each time. I love to watch your LIVE videos too. I also love to watch you and Jerry hike together and when he's on LIVE with you too. You made 2020 much better just from being able to actually look forward to the videos. You're an amazing hiker and my husband, Larry and I both really enjoy you and Jerry (Hobs) whether it's hikes or LIVE videos. We hope to see more LIVE videos. Thanks for all the time you put into this for everyone. You & Jerry are fabulous and wonderful people. I checked out your merchandise link and you have some really cool stuff. :)

Thanks for the explanation. I’m glad you stretched it out as long as you did because it gave me the opportunity to see things that other vloggers don’t take the time to show. It seems like to many it’s a race to beat someone else’s time or to hurry up and get back to work and home. I appreciate the time you took filming, editing and uploading videos. I hope all these videos are safely archived somewhere other than TH-cam.

I love statistics and you gave'em to all of us except for costs, which you won't reveal. I do know it cost a small fortune with all those stays. I'm not sure how my hike will unfold but I give you tons of KUDO's for finishing in a year where many of us were hunkered down not knowing how Covid would affect us. I delayed my 2020 thru hike to 2021 and will Vlog my journey as well, with our without the vaccine. I'm trying to get it but our state does not have enough vaccine available. I am in the age group where I'm allowed to get it now but nothing is available. Thanks for putting out all the effort to do your videos. John from MI

First of all love the picture of you and Jerry at Raven Rocks , on the wall. Your so gracious explaining your hike in such detail, as if you really need to give an account of your hike to others. An A.T. hike is not a test of who can stay in the woods the longest. You did what God gave us a brain for, you adapted, you worked with nature, you thought on your feet(Pun intended). You took inventory of your strengths and weaknesses and took advantage of them. Most of all you dreamed a dream and made it come true!

Your hike should be described as a Flip Flop Flip (maybe add another flip in there somewhere, I lost track). Should clear up all the confusion for the person you are describing your hike to. ;-p I heard that term years ago from a PCT hiker who had to flip twice to finish the trail while avoiding the worst of the snow in a big snow year. All that maters at the end of it is you finished the whole thing.

In Massachusetts you have to wear a mask while watching TH-cam videos and the TV> You also must sit at least 6 feet from the computer. I downvoted because you bought something from the ATC.
