Greetings from the oldest Ethiopian Orthodox Church! We, the apostles of Mathai, are pleased to connect with our fellow Christians in India, the ancient cradle of Christianity.

Very nice and detailed research done. I'm from the Plamoottil family and my forefather who was a Brahman high priest accepted Christ and was baptized by Thomas the Apostle of Jesus in 53 AD and since then we've been Christians.

As a Kerala Brahmin, myself, I would say definitely not many Nasranis are of Brahmincal descent but, it is an undeniable fact that some Nasrani families especially in Thrissur side are from the brahmin descent, historically we share a lot of marriage customs, traditions and family names, which have been practiced for many centuries. There is no smoke without fire.

Typical Christian names like Varughese, Avira, Ipe, Chandy, ommen, varkey, Chacko, Unnunni, Mathai, Yohannan etc are found only among the Kerala Syrian Christians. Marriage ceremonies, like tying the knot, giving dress (mantrakodi) to the bride, the crowning ceremony etc. Exists only among the Orthodox Christians of Kerala.

The church architecture, style of the churches are also typical of the Marthoma christians (Orthodox) christians. The liturgy also is a speciality of Orthodox church.

Most of our community people believe in our Brahmin originality.More than 80% remain as Brahmins and balance from other uppercast called Nair. They were actually Nair Hindus, but were family employees of the Syrian Christians and called as “ karyasthan” in Malayalam. They may have converted to Christianity by seeing the higher positions enjoyed by the Syrian Christians in that society. Syrian Christians never supported convertions from any lower castes for equality in society at that times, mean history before 100 years ago. Even if someone from lower cast wish to convert to Christian on the base of faith , the so strong sin in society, the untouchability never allowed the lower cast one to attend the same church. So they were practiced prayers in other churches and remained Christian in different name. There were conflicts between them. This is the recent time facts. These were happened only after foreign missionaries came and started educational institutions. That changed Kerala society.
If we are going to history beyond Portuguese era, then you can see Syrian Christians of other type. Proofs for this we are getting from old writings called “ thaaliyola “ which is available with our old families or with the king then ( now in some museums). Until the arrival of Portuguese people we Syrian Christians in Kerala have no connection with European Christians, but with Iraq's ,Egypt's, Syria’s Christians only. Our ancestors followed all customs what our Hindu Brahmin's followed, be it the hair style, dress code, society living style. Whatever even cast system also. In the Cochin kingdom and Thiruvithaamkur kingdom Syrian Christians were allowed to Hindu temples other than Hindu Brahmins, but not even a so called uppercaste Nair was allowed. These are all mentioned in the “ thaaliyola”. This is the ancient evidence for that.
Other evidence have no proof, but by vocally it was transmitted to our generations. This continued till Portuguese came to india , then started conflicts between Portuguese and Syrian Christians of Kerala. Then our community were split into different communities called Syrian Catholic, Syrian Orthodox, Syrian Jacobite, Marthoma Syrian etc… This is the situation nowadays.
Some recent time proofs I can give you,
Even after India's independence when a socioeconomic survey was conducted by then Kerala government, Syrian Christians were the society who owned about 40% of total land even though they were 18% in population. ( other Christian were 6%). The land reformation law initiated by communists changed the situation and they aimed mainly on the community.
In Kerala Hindu Brahmins are below 3% in total population. ( even in a Dravida state like Tamil Nadu, there are 24% Brahmins)
There are Syrian Christians and Hindu Brahmins in the same house name in many places, number is different.
Most of the places are still known in the name of some family names or house names which are mostly Syrian christian names.
One of the famous Sanskrit college started in Kerala which permitted non Brahmins is started by a Christian only which is now a central government institute now and is situated in Thrissur district of Kerala known as “ Pavaratty Sanskrit college”
These are all I can say to those who really wants to know about the origin of Kerala Syrian Christian community. Those who are opposing its Brahmin origin may have their own agenda.

The present original Nasranis , I am not talking about the new latin catholics, are actually the World's ancient and original living Jews who are to be still living in Kerala, they are compartively much fairer than the 'original jews' also called as 'black jews of kerala', perhaps due the middle eastern and Aryan admixture later to their community, the saddest part is that many people of this community has forgotten its rich roots .

  • @Jimjak-n9o

I wish the old united Nasrani church, unifies itself as one again and stays as an independent church like the Egyptian coptic church or the ethopian church, its a shame that instead of being proud and knowing about ones rich roots, majority of the Nasranis want to continue to be slaves of the white european pope whoose catholicism has destroyed this ancient church and its traditions not only materiallistically, but also from our memories.

They are not Syrian Christians, but Malankara Nasranis. They were Syriacized in due course of time. Please read two books to know more - Unmaksing the Syriacs, & A Hindu Church and an Indian Christ.

No such thing as a Hindu church. Hinduism arrived only after brahmin migrations between the 4th to 6th centuries. The original Nasrani church was a Jewish church.

Do you agree that there were Jews in Kerala? There is also Syrian Christians who migrated here and have a very long history. Brahmins came here only after that. It is why you have no Kshatriya, trader caste... very less Brahmins here compared to North. Even Nairs are shudras. There were already Christian and Muslim traders and for other castes.
