Very well presented. Let this video be presented in Hindi and broadcast in in northern States to educate them on the 2000 year tradition of Christianity in India .
A Franciscan friar from Florence, Italy, Bishop Giovanni dei Marignolli, visited Kollam in 1348 and converted some of the ethnic Syrian Christians as well as their local servants for his newly established Catholic Church. In order to distinguish between these two, he called the ethnic Syrians, “St. Thomas Christians”, since they had carried with them the Thomas tradition all the way from Edessa. The first Christian church in Mylapore built by Augustinian friars in 1523 on top of the ruins of the old Mylapore Shiva temple transformed into the “historic” site of St. Thomas’ tomb. All Church historians however agree that Edessa, the hometown of Bardesanes, was the place where the Thomas cult originated and was a centre of Eastern Christianity. For all Church fathers of that time until the 20th century, Thomas was the ‘Apostle of the East’. Ancient Church fathers and historians such as Clement, Origen and Eusebius, the 4th century priest Rufinus of Aquileia and the 5th century Byzantine Church historian Socrates of Constantinople, who all declare that Thomas went to Parthia. It is also clear that at the Edessa church there was a tomb of Thomas, where it was believed the remains of the apostle lay many centuries ago. During the crusades, Christians from Europe raided the Edessa tomb and carried away the remains of the supposed apostle to Chios in Greece, and from there it found its way to Ortona in Italy in 1258, where most of the bones still lie. The second century writer Heracleon the Gnostic asserts that Thomas ended his days in peace, suggesting that even Thomas’ martyrdom is a hoax. Another historian from Kerala, himself a so-called “St. Thomas Christian”, who called out the fraud in the 20th century. His name was T. K. Joseph and his book, Six Thomases of South India: A Muslim Non-Martyr made Martyrs after 1517 AD, exposed the fraud committed in Kerala to establish the Thomas martyrdom. If you really want to know the truth, please READ "The Myth of Saint Thomas and the Mylapore Shiva Temple. by Ishwar Sharan. " And for the record Ishwar Sharan is a christian not a "pagan" hindu.
This summary is good. But it has a major gap.. The Christian community was able to thrive in India after the era of St.Thomas with a significant support from Church of East, which was centered in Iraq-Iran region. The Church of East was outside Roman Empire which included the other major christian centers like Rome, Alexandria etc. It was the spiritual connnection with this Church of East and its prelates that shaped the communities traditions, religious texts, syriac language usage etc. The Church of East was a major missionary church in ancient times that they established very active and huge Christian communities in Afghanistan and even in China.
I posted a similar message listing early Christian communities around the Mediterranean. Apostles had the limited role of oral transmission prior to Gospel compilation. The Thomas story doesn't make historical sense and lacks any evidence. As you mentioned, it was the Church of the East ("Nestorians") using Pahlavi, Syriac that were missionaries in India, Eastern Iranian territories and China.
Right, and it's also said that Christianity reached China through the Nasrani Church. The Church of the East used the help of Nasrani merchants to reach China (using the spice route)
According to my reading , christians in India, became the part of Catholicate of Nestor (eastern Syrian)and when a later Catholicos (arch bishop) conflicted the universal synod and gone out cast they remain independent for a long time. By 16th century they got ordiant from Syrian Orthodox Churh of Antioch.

Happy to see that such a video has been produced. So many express doubts about the authenticity of the stories of St Thomas in India, inspite of the wealth of evidence. Westerners perhaps felt they had some patent on Christianity. And north Indians like to think we got our Christianity from the British and like to label us as rice bags, which we certainly aren't. As a Syrian Christian, I'm so grateful to God for St Thomas. Of course, also am grateful for the revivals brought by the western missionaries. But feel upset by the Portuguese attack on Syrian Christians, thinking that only their version of Christian practices was right.
Glad to see this. Hope Bollywood and other places stop portraying Christians as some western people....esp in the way they dress. Watch Malayalam movies to see how Christains in Kerala follow Indian traditions in all aspects.
According to the Kerala history, St. Thomas preached Jesus in different parts of Kerala and Churches have been rebuilt over and over again in 7 different locations in Kerala, over time starting from first century. Bible records that Jesus rose up 3 days after his cricufixion and appeared to his disciples in a room, when Thomas wasnt present. So when he was told by eye witnesses that Jesus rose up, he refused to believe, saying, "unless I see the nail pierced hands and feel the stab wound on Jesus' side, I will not believe" And that is how the expression " dont be a doubting Thomas " came into being. However, when Jesus appeared again, Thomas was present and then Thomas not only believed but the experience led him to even come to Kerala with the good news of love of God that brought God into becoming flesh and blood in the person Jesus, to be the lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the whole world, so much so, that man's sin is no longer counted on man, according to 2 Cor 5 verse 19 because God counted mans sins in the punishment and death of Jesus in verse 21. When people in first century believed Thomas' preaching of Jesus' death and resurrection, they also then experienced miracles that proved the message to them, as being truly divine and thus began Christianity in Kerala, in the very first century itself.
.Kerala is the only region in India, which was NEVER under any foreign rule in recorded history . The rebellion against the Portuguese at koonankurusu represents the dominant spirit of independence of the people of kerala and its will to resist the imposition of foreign cultures and rituals. An interesting thread related to this -Indias first freedom fight against the westerners -The Coonan Cross Oath (alternatively spelled Koonan Cross Oath), also known as the Great Oath of Bent Cross or Leaning Cross Oath, was taken on 3 January 1653, in Mattancherry, by a significant portion of the Saint Thomas Christian community in the Malabar region of India. This public declaration marked their refusal to submit to the authority of the Jesuits and the Latin Catholic hierarchy, as well as their rejection of Portuguese dominance in both ecclesiastical and secular matters
Born and raised in Chennai I've been to St Thomas Mt multiple times as a child. They also have an engraving of his foot print. Christianity was first established in Africa, Asia long before it went to Europe anyone who has read Epistles in New Testament they all knows it and most importantly there is no Jews, no Greeks, no castes, no bond nor free, neither male or female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus our saviour (Galatians 3:28) and God has made absolutely everyone in his image not just the kings or queens (Genesis 1:27) these divine truths were total revolutionary at time because like in India, in Rome, in Greeks and in many pegan polytheistic cultures believe in racial purity, caste superiority like in ancient pegan Roman empire which is one of the absolute evil empire in the history of mankind in Rome it was not only legal but it lawful for a free Roman man to have multiple women as sex slaves and multiple male slaves these were considered normal they often sold their babies in market or abandon them in streets it is a by product of polytheism much like in Canaan, Egypt because of these Roman pegans had enormous clashes with Christians and Christians took these poor babies in they brutally murdered tens of thousands of Christians including the vicar of Christ St.Peter, St.Paul most importantly it was the power of Christ which brought the Rome to its knees...
Scanning through responses, I came across this one , truly reflecting Holy Spirit ! Our Lord and Saviour did not come to establish divisions among men, but teach eternal truth that sets all free from the bondage of sin and its consequences! Who your ancestor was or what your past was is immeterial, but what matters is the Christ, whether you follow the Lord in word and deed. Even today, we hear a lot of people bragging about ethnic superority and racial purity among themselves! Some are racially purerer and superior than others! That some have Jewish lineage, some are converted by St Thomas himself etc. and saying so, they downgrade others ! I often wonder whether the Kingdom of God that the Lord promises his followers will have different compartments for Marthomites, Syrians, Kananites, chaldeans, protestants, jacobites, orthodox, RC, etc etc. Christ will be laughing at our fooleries! If we go through the NT , we will realize that all that matters is Christ and to follow him, we dont need a past and a history! What we need is a willing heart to foĺow
@priyancaedison9806 Absolutely, you can't be a monotheist you can't have God almighty who is creator of everything and designer of the universe and eternal immortal life giver of all whose nature is the standard of moral values and duties you cannot believe that and simultaneously hold on to some sort of racial purity or ethnic superiority then God has not given us the same intrinsic moral worth and dignity endowed with certain inalienable rights because then God himself will discriminate based on race and caste and whatnot then he is not the God who can be perfectly good if God is not perfectly good then he is not the good God so it's not really possible to hate someone based on their race, caste, ethnicity and to believe in God let alone in Christianity so if someone says that he/she is a monotheist or classic theist and they hold those discriminatory concepts then they don't even believe in God with their heart and minds maybe only intellectually so Kingdom of God will have none of these nonsense in fact Revelation says enemies those who hate each others will sit together and eat from the same table there will be no difference anymore because the Lord will erase all of these so yeah...
I have that doubt too.. are there any accounts of traditions or teachings taught by St Thomas himself passed down through the years or only oral traditions
Thomas received the Holy Spirit just like the other Apostles and Mary and Paul. Tomas had the authoraty to teach and make miracles The Bible on the other hand was compile by the disciples of the Apostle Peter (who also reveived thw Holy Spirit)
@@drdeepika8545 That's a genuine doubt. Well, St. Thomas spread the word of Christ, but he didn't spread it as a religion. The doctrines and practices were spread by the bishops from the East in the later centuries. there is an instance about a miracle, the brahmins were doing the Tharpanam". Apostle asked them, whether they can hold the water in the atmosphere. They said they cannot do it against the gravitational rule. Then the apostle did the miracle, and the water remained in the sky and the trogh was seen on the surface of the water. this same story existed in msul iraq. check pakalomattamfamily google for more info

The oldest and the prime document is “The Acts of Thomas” originating in the third century. This work belongs to the class of Christian literature called romance, where our saintly heroes perform miracles, such as raising the dead, healing the blind and so on by calling upon Jesus Christ. The Acts was written by a man named Bardesanes, who lived in Edessa in ancient Syria, which is now situated in south-eastern Turkey. In the story, Thomas is the look-alike twin brother of Jesus. After refusing to go East for evangelistic purposes, Jesus sells him as a slave to a merchant and he gets carried away to the East. If you examine the text, the internal evidences reveal a West Asian desert country wherein names of characters and places are Persian. However, India is mentioned twice in the entire narrative. Thomas travels from kingdom to kingdom at the prompt of his twin Jesus who appears in his dreams. He exercises the biblical miracles, all the nine yards, including raising the dead, but the main activity he indulges in is the propagation of Christian chastity and abstention from sex. He preaches this to everyone and soon gets into trouble. Accused of sorcery, he is finally executed at the orders of their king Mazdai. He is speared by four soldiers upon a mountain. Christian scholar Sharan tells us that the mention by anyone that Thomas went to India occurs after this third century romance. And no scholar, past or present, actually ever had any doubt that the Acts was a story of fiction and was originally pronounced apocryphal by the Catholics.

Not at all! No one is obligated to follow anyone. It is statements like these that create ignorance and bring about violence among communities which is happening right now in our country. The source of violence, colonisation, discrimination and prejudice has been religion. But in truth, it is man who uses religion as an excuse to justify all of these atrocities by forcing their religion upon others. It is faith alone that makes you a true Christian... Not someone forcing or coaxing you to convert...and not because you're born into a Christian family. Live and let live and let everyone practice what they believe in. Your faith does not outweigh someone else's. If every Indian "MUST" know these facts about Christianity then you "MUST" know the facts of other religions and beliefs which have existed long before Christianity came to India.

Truth will prevail, JESUS CHRIST IS KING

In contrast, the Bible presents a sensible reality: both the physical and spiritual are real! It explains where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going. It makes sense of the fact that humans can be so very good yet do very terrible things. Things that merit death.
Still, Jesus' gospel can save you. Why not follow the example of the first Indians who heard it and believe it too? It will change your life for good - or better!

Fascinating history…I came from a Brahmin Hindu family and believed I was the only Christian in my family when I got saved in my teens ( I’m British born and we had no other family here in the U.K. when my parents came here from Kerala)… I knew about St Thomas bringing the gospel to Kerala but not the other information.
I now wonder how many of my ancestors became Christians although they seem to have originally migrated from Kashmir evidently.
My father had great respect for Jews and was fascinated by their ability to survive throughout the centuries. He came to Christ on his deathbed which was very precious…God is faithful 🙏🌈✝️💝

Very well made video. I believe many of the Christian communities that descend from St Thomas now have their own rites in the Catholic Church, such as the Syro Malabar rite. I believe it is the second largest rite after the Latin rite.
This is my beautiful church, the St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, located in the serene village of Valiaveli, Kerala. With its stunning architecture and rich spiritual ambiance, this church holds a special place in my heart. Dedicated to St. Thomas, one of Jesus' apostles, it stands as a testament to faith and community. The church not only serves as a place of worship but also embodies the cultural heritage of the region, making it a cherished landmark for both locals and visitors alike.
Kerala is a beautiful place and the Church is also beautiful. I think in a way, you are lucky to have your home there

Yes, Syrian Catholics follow Syrian rites (Eg: Syro-Malabar Catholics follow the East Syriac rite, Syro-Malankara Catholics follow the West Syriac rite, etc. ) while Roman Catholics follow the Latin rite.
Catholics are often mistakenly addressed as "Roman Catholics" but the Catholic Church consists of twenty three Eastern rite Sui iuris churches as well.
Wonderful 🎉
In which language did Thomas preach in Kerala? Also, which Bible did he use??

They literally let them build Churches and preach their religion, however aggressive their tone may be and however hateful their scripture may be to the local people. The lengths converted Christians go to justify the reason for their conversion is insane.
@floe61 well done to satisfy your desires you found some dreams. Funny. Actually the land from indus river to the kanniyakumari believed in one god.
Just one question Thomas guys: Which text did Thomas use to preach Christianity in Kerala?? Did the Bible, as we know it, even exist before 52 ACE?
St. Thomas is a disciple of Christ, he didn't need any texts to preach about the things he had seen.
@@Gabriel-Vidovic Wow!! Great logic...
I have that doubt too.. are there any accounts of traditions or teachings taught by St Thomas himself passed down through the years or only oral traditions
Thomas received the Holy Spirit just like the other Apostles and Mary and Paul. Tomas had the authoraty to teach and make miracles
The Bible on the other hand was compile by the disciples of the Apostle Peter (who also reveived thw Holy Spirit)
The gospel of Jesus Christ had already reached India before the apostle Thomas through Pandit Vishwamitra(from banaras), who was a prophet at the time of Jesus Christ's birth. And this is the same Pandit who had gone from India to Bethlehem to see Jesus Christ, another apostle of Jesus Christ had come named Bartholomew, And if someone does not believe it then the proof of Vishwamitra Pandit is also there in our India, his ancestors are still in our country India.
Wow! It's wonderful to hear this!
Do you agree that "The Great Commission" is what we call Jesus' final command to his disciples. He told them to take his gospel around the world. Thomas went, perhaps, the farthest in following this directive. Two important points were left out of this otherwise very good presentation:
1. Thomas' strong CHARACTER:
- In John 11:16 he was perhaps the first disciple to tell the others that they should be willing to die with Jesus.
- Yet, he would not believe the other disciples' reports of Jesus' resurrection: he had to see it for himself. Then he testified that Jesus was his Lord, and his GOD. (John 20:28)
2. Jesus did not simply say to share his teachings. He told them was to make known the GOSPEL and make disciples.
- The Gospel means "Good News!" Thomas told the people that there is one, Creator God. And God is personal, like we are. That means that although he is in everything, as Hindus suspected, he is also outside of it with thoughts, intentions, and emotions, such as we have.
- God is perfect and expects perfection from his human creatures. The problem is that we are NOT perfect. We miss the mark, and that s called "sin."
- Like the good parent that he is, as a father would pay for what a child breaks, he also paid our debt. On a Cross. As Jesus Christ. (John 3:16)
- His love and grace to us is so huge, that all we must do is believe and accept this offer for God's promise of eternal life with him, starting now
You might say, "But I am Hindu! I can't believe this!" or "I believe in science; I am an atheist. This means nothing to me!"
Consider:
--> To Hindus, only the spiritual is real. The rest is "maya," or illusion.
--> To the scientific materialist, only the physical is real.
In contrast, the Bible presents a sensible reality: both the physical and spiritual are real! It explains where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going. It makes sense of the fact that humans can be so very good yet do very terrible things. Things that merit death.

Fascinating story 👏👍🇱🇰

It's great to know India which was Buddhiat at that time adopted Christianity as Buddhists were open and respectful towards other intellectual traditions. As an Indian who learns Buddhist philosophy, it amazes me and makes me curious to know about St. Thomas Christian culture. Please preserve your culture and philosophy, don't let to go down.
Not after passing of Yeshu but after the ressurection of Yeshu

Jesus did not send his Apostles to convert them to Christianity. He sent his Apostles to preach d good news of d coming of d Messiah to d 12 tribes of Israel.
Until Paul came on d scene d followers of Jesus were considered a Jewish sect
@anselmalmeida To this day, there is such a sect under Judaism with those who believe that Jesus is the Messiah.
Thank you for this video. Very informative and inspirational 🙏😊
I am Knanya Catholic . Hinduism is our real religion. We need to wake up
This is funny because there are heaps of Knanaayas who are resistant towards Hindu customs and frown upon it, but of course not all of them
If Hinduism is your 'real' religion then why are you still Catholic?!?!😂😂😂
Rather, you could say Hinduism encompasses Christianity and other faiths, Hinduism had no conversion or force as it is considered as natural religion/seek/awakening of all by default, so there is not point in conversion. If someone says he converted from Hinduism to a religion, it means he forgo his mansion and is living in a room of his ertswhile mansion in a lease( rent).... while losing the vast mansion...
😂 knanya Christians(Syrian Christians) came from Syria after St. Thomas
He's a troll
Proud to be a Catholic, has visited the Cathedral in Chennai several times, impressed by the faith of the early Christians in our beloved country India. We are blessed by the missionaries from the south of India.St.Thomas pray for the unity of us Christians.
Im Glad for the gift of St Thomas who chose India to spread the Good News to Jesus Christ....today i can worship one true God Jesus Christ my Lord and saviour ☦️👑✝️🇮🇳
Lolz 😂😂😂ricebag😂😂
Aramaic is a dialect of Syriac, not the other way around.
@@RootSystemHash No, Syriac is a 'dialect' of Aramaic. West - Syriac and East Syriac 'scripts' have differences between them. I am more familiar with the Madnhaya (East Syriac) script than the Serto (west Syriac). In Kerala, the syro-malabarica script was popular, which is the east Syriac script with a few additional letters for sounds unique to Malayalam.
I am also familiar with the estrangela script.
@artauthor8962 You are right, my bad.
It was very informative and interesting historical information. Thank you!
Every Indian must know these facts and follow JESUS CHRIST
I am a practicing Christian and I have witnessed others in my community and even family, pushing their faith on someone else and over the years and I have criticized and argued against such an ignorant and nescient thought process.
Let go of your hypocrisy.
Krishna and Jesus are the same - " yogananda"
