Why didn't I buy the 400 horsepower Audi TT RS ?!

  • So why didn't I buy the 400 horsepower Audi TT RS instead of my Porsche 718 Boxster GTS ? Well that is a good question that might take a while to answer. I have been driving the simply epic Audi TT RS for the last week and I am a big TT fan. They are a similar price but can the really be compared ?
In this video I put the TT through its paces, including a spectacular 0-60 test, and try to answer my question.

Okay so this is going to shock all of you. I have owned about 14 Porsches including the 911 Turbo S. I currently drive a 2021 Spyder. Love the car but it isn’t a daily driver. Nearly brake my back getting in and whilst the lines and sound are fantastic I am going to but a 2023 Audi tt RS. It’s so much more practical and the practicality supersedes the sound of the Spyder. It is marginally faster and technologically more advanced. A change is good and although i have never owned an Audi, don’t think I will be disappointed,

Just took delivery of my ‘21 TT RS here in the US. For me it’s about straight line speed with sublime interior and engine note. And unlike in Europe, this car is FAR rarer than most Porsches, which adds to the value. I love Audi’s unapologetic modern design language - it’s a real head turner. Checks all of the boxes. ✅

I had a real hard time deciding between a used MY19+ TT RS and a new MY22 BMW M240i. Ultimately the latter was too good of a value to pass up (and purple!), especially after TT RS prices got all jacked up in the US post-pandemic. But I still keep scrolling the classifieds for the right TT RS, it's just so magnetic. Enjoy your ride!

@@vomErsten Yeah, I paid a shit ton for this car, and prices are due to plummet. But I can't look back. TT RS will be a bit of a classic in a few years, especially with electrics being shoved in our faces. Congrats on your M240i. Enjoy

Ok, I’m 1.5 years into my ownership here in the USA. Where I live, Porsches are a dime a dozen. Corevettes and BMWs as well. Everywhere I go with this TTRS I get looks and comments. There are literally more Ferraris around than TTRS’s. I have an exotic that I paid $62k for. Haven’t had a single issue, it gets amazing MPG when I’m not on it. I did a stage 1+ tune, so I’m just over 500 hp and it’s just a ballistic missile! Love it!

Many thanks Pete, for this video and the previous review you undertook on the TTS. I have very recently bought my first TT, which is a 2017 Sline 2ltr 227bhp Quattro model, that only has 25k miles on the clock. Still playing with and getting used to it, and the noise it makes when in Dynamic mode is phenomenal! This I think is what you are referring to as a slightly older model, before they messed about with the noise, etc. requirements of modern cars. Am planning to take it down to Italy in the summer; can't wait. Cheers, Andy.

That's a tough one... we spent a lot of time looking and thinking about that very same dilemma...Tts or Ttrs. It came down to two factors... a certain TH-cam channel called "Petrol Ped" and our need for three pedals! We became the very proud owners of a brand new 2017 black edition Tts. We love it! haven't regretted it, it is a fantastic car! 👍

The 5 cyl engine was precisely why I bought an RS3 8Y, it really is a legend. The RS3 is a future classic and the last ‘new’ Audi to get the in line 5, sad times. I considered the TTRS but couldn’t get away with two seats (the back seats are only useful for humans called Douglas Bader). The big elephant in the room though with all these cars is lead in time and subsequent inflated second hand prices. My RS3 is the first brand new car I have ever had that went up in value as I drove it off the forecourt - crazy times.

After a few months I could no longer take the torment...I don't know whether its what one calls "The Porsche effect" or what but ended up then ordering the 718 in Feb and cancelling the RS3!
Can't wait until I take delivery later in 2022/23

Amazing review, love hearing honest feedback of both cars and not some random drivel, genuinely informative as well, subscribed.
The latest TT RS is so on point, it might understeer when pushed on a track but in the real world on the road, in all weather, there's not much that will touch it this side of a GTR, that thing is a BEAST.
The Porsche is lovely don't get me wrong, but if you're not tracking it to the limit, the TT is a serious contender.
Interior is beautiful, exterior is beautiful, performance destroys most things up to supercar level and the grip is other worldly at speeds way in excess of what most people are comfortable driving at.
That engine and exhaust note as well, man, change of pants please.

Loved your video and completely understand why you bought the Porsche. I have owned neither and was leaning toward the Cayman. (That Porsche mystique.) But, then, I drove one and discovered how loud the engine is. Just bought a 2018 TT RS. Had been looking for a TTS, but when I found a 5 cylinder, I just had to buy it. It has a nice growl, but with the engine up front, the cabin is much quieter than the Porsche. I find it to be more refined and livable. (And, I do plan to put my bike in the back!) Cheers!

Well Pete you have just summed up the last 12 months+ of my quandary.
I've looked at M2s, Boxsters, Caymans all as possible replacements for my TTRS..... but strange as it may seem, not the latest TTRS.
I have been in one or two but something seems missing from the newer model. Yes it's quicker & even more sure footed but they don't stir me as much as mine.
It may be that mine is a manual (which you can't get now) & your point about wanting something different is also I guess a factor but i have to say I have loved, cherished & cared for this stunning missile for nearly 8 years now.... that's how much I have loved it & parting with it will be a wrench.
Ultimately I think a Cayman is probably where I will end up as I need to feel like I've moved on a notch & another RS or an M car probably won't do that for me.
Your comparison of the drop top to your Boxster is valid as the coupe practicality goes & they are therefore similar, can't say the same for a Cayman & the coupe though, as the 2 extra seats and the practicality is still a consideration.... 🤦🏻
Awaiting your road trip & more in depth views of the Porsche ownership.... enjoy & report back soon 👍🏻

I somewhat followed your extensive search for a new car, it also helped to shape my own personal decision to buy the Porsche Cayman as I did not want a convertible, I just wanted a modern classic analog Porsche that will age with me down the line. I opted for the 986.2 as most cars appeared too modern, fast and expensive. The sound and soul of the flat six or four are distinctive so I agree with your choice of the flat four GTS, the Audi is too contemporary for my liking but hats off to the 5 cylinders TT RS.

With you all the way on this one. Love the sound of the TTRS and so many other features, but it is a tin top, and I would want a soft top.😘 Going back I had a long held wish to one own a Porsche. A cracking great video! I love the sound of this TTRS, but I’m hearing, I believe, solely the audio that your mic inside the car pics up, which would include any synthesised sound. It seems that the sound in your clips of the car tearing past the camera on the roadside, have the sound from your interior mic, which is not helpful, if true, because it would mask how it actually sounds from outside and in those clips from an external camera, that’s when I would expect to hear that outside, driveby sound. That aside, you did a wonderful job of this review, and I am really enjoying your reviews across the board.
I have had a 2017 718 Boxster S, and loved it. It was a 10/10 car, and a pure sports car. I sold it because I had moved overseas, ish. Now I have a 2021 Audi S3, which I will say, is fairly close in all measures of performance to that Boxster S, but a little more refined, and a little bit less sharp. I keep seeing TT’s around at the moment, and miss my Boxster so you can see why this video speaks to me.
On Audi engine choice - before buying my S3, I drove an RSQ3. I chose not to get that, in favour of the S3, primarily because I wanted to zip away from 0 with just a light touch of the accelerator pedal, and minimal turbo lag. That 5 cylinder engine in (at least) Q3 guise was WAY more laggy than the 310hp 4cyl engine in the S3. That massively lower lag is what swung me for the 4 pot.
Would it not be the same story with TTRS vs TTS?

  • @MikeFL52
    @MikeFL52 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I bought a new Boxster S with the Sports Chrono Package in 2011 and then traded it out for a used 2014 Carerra S (991.1) in 2016. When I bought the Boxster I also considered the TT, but the handling and the feel of the Boxster was so much better, much more communicative. The trouble with an open top car here in Central Florida is the weather, because of the heat and humidity, driving with the top down can be quite tiring, so I ended up with the 911 Coupe. My biggest criticism of Porche’s in general is the PDK programming, in normal mode it upchanges way too early (yes you can drive in manual mode). Putting it in sport improves that but to really push the car sport plus (part of the Sport Chrono Package) brings it alive. My 911 doesn’t have Sport Chrono but since the warranty is expired I use a Cobb Tuning gizmo that allows me to change the PDK shift points to be more aggressive. So going back to the original question lower powered Boxster or TT RS, for me it would be the Boxster all day long.

Fantastic video Pete. I had the same dilemma, took delivery of a new 72 plate TTRS roadster, nardo grey and yes it's an awsome car but where's the noise from that 5 pot engine gone. So when a friend of mine decided to sell his Porsche boxter S 981 roadster and gave me 1st refusal I just had to acquire it. It's 10 years old, one owner, 26500 miles, full Porsche history, in white. OMG it sounds amazing, that flat 6 engine with no opf filters has done the trick for me. So much so , do I now sell the TTRS, well the answer to that is......... NO I just can't bring myself to part company with it. So the Audi is my autumn through to winter car, and Porsche is my spring to summer car. Yes I do realise I'm in a very fortunate position to own such vehicles when all my grandson has got coming is EVs. Thanks again for your time Pete in producing your channel and thanks for taking the time to read my story.

Boxster or Cayman GTS for me, but it would need to be the 6 pot. Great choice though.
IAM masters? How is that going? Are you going to do a video on that? I have my IAM test in 3 weeks, hoping for a F1rst.

i had a choice between the mk3 TTRS and the Porsche Caymen 3.4 litre in guards red, with the 20 inch wheels, the TTRS in Sepang blue with silver wheels was just stunning ,and is the drive, and although i previously had a mk3 TTs in Tango red ,i wanted a car that i could keep forever and possibly tune and enjoy it , without a doubt the TTRS is in a class of its own , its a piece of eye candy inside and out, being able to see the engine and being able to service it, and clean it, makes a closer and more in depth ownership experience,, the TTRS is in a class of its own and that makes it special, if you buy the boxter you will probably upgrade in time to a 911.

  • @nigel.w
    @nigel.w 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

IMO, you made the right choice.
Residual-wise, obviously prices are going to drop closer to pre-Covid levels, but it seems Porsche will almost certainly fare better than any other brand.
I also think by nature, the Boxster is more of a junior supercar...a supercar for the road...than the TT RS, which to my mind is more of a junior super GT. I also think that the TT RS convertible is a fast and capable convertible but is master of nothing other than speed.
From the Boxster GTS, I can see you naturally progressing to either a GTS 4.0 (classic supercar brought up to date), a 911 992 Cabrio (more pup friendly), or maybe even a McLaren 570S Spider (arguably the best convertible supercar). Of course, from the TT RS you could take any route you liked, but I think the natural path looks quite different.
All that said, you may well find that the GTS 2.5 is the best sports car for your tastes on UK roads, bar none, and very hard to find a good replacement for.

I had a well specced mark 3 Audi TTS coupe and loved it, but it missed out on the 6 cylinder warble that it’s predecessors (and current day competitors) has. Coming from various BMWs and Audis I completely understand Pedros allure of the Porsche badge, handling, quality and kudos. So I sold my beautiful ara crystal blue TTS and got a porker! I have no regrets whatsoever. If I had been in pedros shoes though I wouldn’t have bought his 2.5 litre 4 pot 718 GTS. I would have put my name down on the long waiting list for a brand new 718 4.0 litre 6 cylinder GTS and spent the year on the list saving up the extra £10k I needed to buy it.

That is a decision I would not want to make. On the one you have the aggressive lines of the TT and on the other you have the timeless lines of the Porsche. Either way I don't believe you can go wrong. Another great video Sir.

Hi Pete. I have a the tars but with the proper wheels and black gloss on the sport pack that press car looks like a pram. I have to say both are amazing cars, but i need the occasional kid in the back etc that the Porsche can’t do. But ultimately if you need a daily driver, all weather, all road , all bends bullet the t does it all. And as you said, the sad end to the sound of that engine at full can’t needs to be rejoiced before its gone for ever. Great vid as usual.

I agree with your conclusion re the TT RS, get one before they dulled the sound of the engine. Yet, even though the Porsche 718 4-pots don't sound great, they don't sound bad by currrent standards. Some of the best sounding engines have become almost unrecognizable.

I’m on my 3rd TT… had a mk1 225 quattro, a MK2 TTS daily which was a great all rounder but I never loved and was replaced with a 981 Cayman S. That’s a car I loved. Everything the TTS wasn’t. The CS was my weekend car with an old Golf GTD for commuting. I’ve driven a TT RS and it really didn’t work for me. Absolutely the engine is fantastic… the rest though, in my opinion, is just the same with the same problems. Fantastically fast but somehow as a whole not exciting or involving.
Cars all swapped out a few months again. I now have a 981 GT4 and another MK2 TTS for the daily stuff. That’s how it works best for me. Got a chance to retire early and the TTS is great for trundling around, going to the gym, tip run… relatively cheap and painless to own. Performance wise it’s fast but unburdened with the level of expectation I want as a driving experience because I have the GT4. Ideally I’d have the TT RS as a daily alongside the Porsche if funds allowed for both but alas sense has to prevail.

You made the right choice, 2.5 flat 4 and all. I own an RS3 and I will never throw it around corners like you can with the GTS. Power….yes the 5 cylinder loves to make it. But then again so does that forged amazing flat 4 you have. It just hasn’t been fully tapped yet.
Porsche makes some of the best turbo engines ever in my opinion.

I hadnt understood that you are losing all the extra space of the coupe by skipping into the roadster, until you said it. In this case I would pock the Porsche too. But in general, I am more into coupes than in roadsters, and in this case i Would go for the TT.

In 2001 I picked up my TT Roadster in Denver and it was already dark. Then I had to drive 3 hours back up in the Rockies to get home. It gets so dark in the mountains and all I could think (after oh my God what fun) was that I felt I was in an airplane because of the layout of the dash. If only they would give me a manual I would buy another one immediately.

I understand your dilemma, having owned a TT mk1 225 bhp (and didn’t take up the spoiler recall option), then went Porsche Boxster S and then Audi TT again and then back to Porsche Boxster S. I loved my TTS, but the Porsche is in a different league, I would only change it for a R8.

The Porsche and TT are both great cars, however as I am also an owner of a two seater soft top car it depends greatly on your lifestyle.. I have another daily runabout (Dacia Duster) to do the shopping, put my bicycle/dogs in the back going to the garden centre etc. I would say the Audi TT is a better choice if it is going to be your only daily car.

Just in the process of negotiating the purchase of a TTS. I had a TT RS on order in 2020 but that was cancelled for some reason (hint - global pandemic). Having driven the TT RS and the TTS and the 718 Boxster, I reckon the TTS is all the car I will ever need. BUT I will always have the memory of my TT RS test drive, that noise, that blistering acceleration, the salesman breaking his knuckles hanging on as I booted it down a dual carriageway (think he thought I was just an old dude who would toddle along rather than a guy who has driven performance cars for 3-decades).

I have a Audi TTS MK3 and I bores me rigid. I was thrilled at first because it replaced a 2005 Mercedes SLK350 but quickly realised the TTS isn’t a roadster, it’s a golf convertible. The noise isn’t great so that instantly struck the Boxster off my list so now I have a BMW Z4 M40i. It’s closer to the SLK350 than you can imagine but better.
    What’s best? Having these choices!
