My nephew trained as a body guard in South Africa, and was told to shoot for the pelvis, a shot there is very painful, and there are a lot of main arteries.
Even with plates and possibly being 4 more behind him you're still in a decent spot so long as you have your bedside mounted MG42 with steel frontal plating with armorcore level 3 bullet resistant glass window (still gotta see what you're shooting at!) You'll be plenty fine! If you don't have this setup I highly recommend you buy my book on home defense!
I had a firearms instructor explain to a female who felt that 12g might be too much for her to handle in a self defense situation. He told her "12g or 20g, they don't know the difference!"
A lot of times 20 gauge has more kick than 12 gauge since 20 gauge shotguns are usually lighter than your 12 gauge also with 20 gauge you're more likely to run a 3-in shell than the 2.75 shell with 12 gauge
That's just not true though. The difference between 12 gauge and 20 gauge is insane. There's about 50 meters worth of effective range and way more in stopping power.

There was a mass shooting at a university many years ago where a guy used 20g birdshot. You can watch a video where he fires into a woman at around 10 or so feet and she walks away and even survived.
Best argument for this that I’ve seen is, people hit with shells stay down where people hit with bullets can take a bunch of bullets before coming to a stop. I forget the precise percentages but it’s the difference between being hit 9 times with 1 shell or 9 times from 9 different bullets.

even if an armed invader is wearing hard plates, just aim for their bladder/ pelvis bowl. shots to the pelvis can also prevent a threat from standing up again, which makes it easier to secure their weapon and advance safely. (edit: the bladder is the target because of the water content, it guarantees reliable expansion of hollow tip ammunition. the kidneys also sit behind that which carry large arteries and lots of water also. just to explain a bit.)

People talk about armor all the time like it's full body protection. Look at a VTAC target with the three hit boxes, one in the cranial cavity, one in the thoracic cavity, and one in the pelvis. Body armor only covers one of these areas.
While someone may make it through the first round to the plates, 4, 5, 10 rounds later they're going to be done with the fight. Never stop til the side locks
Here's a hint... aim for the pelvic gurdle. If you hit someone's pelvis with pretty much anything... they are going down. And they aren't wearing plates on their pelvis. The more you know.

I know he said birdshot. I'd go for a slugs, being I live in the country, and not in a crowded subdivision. Even if someone is wearing plates, an one ounce hunk of lead traveling at 1500 to 1700 fps will definitely knock the wind out of their sails.

Historically, soldiers would defeat steel plate armor with heavy blunt weapons and then would use swords against unarmored or cloth padded armored people. Using this knowledge, I think that using a 12g slug would cause enough blunt force trauma to the chest of an individual wearing plates, that it would be more than effective enough for the situation.
Yeah, I'm grabbing something that either 1) has a shit load of ammo, or 2) has a shit load of stopping power. You're either gonna catch one or two to a place that's not covered by plates or you're gonna catch one in the plates that's gonna make you cough up your spleen. Either way, you're not leaving my house under your own power.

I was always trained to aim for the head of any human targets so if he’s wearing plates than looks like I’m about to add some new armor to my collection.
Just in general, for conversation, NOT talking about you because people get so butthurt at replies nowadays but IN GENERAL, I think the average person would not be able to head a headshot their first or even second shot on a moving target much less if you’re in bed, assuming the lights off are in the house. While that’s amazing that you can my brotha, I personally would suggest a shotgun for damn near any close range home encounter where you can’t fully prepare. That’s just me, I mean no offense to you or your training, I just wanted to share what I would tell others and your comment made me think of that.
@@majincandybeam I respect your opinion regarding that, and I personally made a shotgun so I see where your coming from and wholeheartedly agree that fighting in the dark is a major disadvantage to begin with because it’s a 50/50 chance you hit them and depends on what ammo is currently loaded in the shotgun. Target loads for example are smaller than buckshot but when fired it sprays in a cone shaped pattern that will pepper a target with 90 % of the load at close range at medium it’s about 70% effective. A deer slug for example would would be just a large single shot that would hit the body at medium range at close range you would be aiming for the head to achieve a kill shot, the same applies to target loads at close range. I don’t keep my home dark, it’s similar to a garage apartment all one room, bed close to the door and shotgun by the bed, and small arsenal of blades for close quarters attacks. I was trained by a retired army sfc who was a family member they survived the Korean Conflict and Vietnam so he trained me for war in all forms from a young age. And I agree these days too many do get butthurt over conversation with a stranger and they act like keyboard warriors puffing their chests out, I’d like to personally invite you to view my TH-cam channel if you haven’t already, as a hobby and skill I also pick locks because it’s a useful skill to have in an emergency situation and locksmiths are expensive if you screw up so better to have a skill that you can use often even as a hobby. Feel free to even subscribe you’ll learn a lot from it.
That was my experience. 2010 a guy was kicking my door in at around 11:30 pm. I was on the phone with the dispatcher when he busted the glass and reached in to unlock the deadbolt. He came in and took 25 pellets of #4 Buck to the chest and crumbled like an empty soda can.

Shotgun at the bedside table would be visible to the home intruder and you would probably wake up with a loaded 12 gauge pointed at your face. If someone with plates is breaking into your home I can guarantee you it’s not a crack head or a common thief. You my friend have made a very dangerous enemy instead.

Smart handgun choice. That was the exact handgun I choose to buy first. I got it specifically for home defense and SHTF, all though it does make a decent CCW too. I have seen plenty of guys CC’ing full size handguns.
It entirely depends on the cartridge used and the barrel length. Thinking all 5.7x28 ammo penetrates even a level IIIa vest is fudd lore. Except for the T6 line of rounds by Elite Ammunition, the 5.7x28 cartridges available to civilians are stopped by level IIIa vests if fired from the Five-seveN's 4.8in barrel, let alone level III plates. Firing it out of the PS90 or AR57 is a different story, however.

Semi auto shotty, dual loaded buck, slug, buck, etc. and what many people don't mention, a real bright flashlight. They'll be blinded, you'll see your target, then just aim for center of shoulder line, then direct center, then center of waistline. Sure it won't penetrate but it'd be like shooting them with a brick, and some of the buckshot will possibly hit their neck and lower gut, n if youre off to the side by accident, you hit their upper thigh. A strobe light would probably disorient them as well as blind them but would prolly disorient you as well so i wouldn't bother. A dual light/laser module would be handy too, to assist w shot placement while aiming during high stress- but a laser should be a bonus, it shouldn't replace practice. I wouldnt bother with trying to penetrate the plate, as youll be increasing risk of overpenetration if you miss, and being unable to identify what youll hit if the bullet goes through a wall. Just deliver as much energy as possible into the plate, as quick as possible. Also, the flashlight i think is important. If its real dark, you want to make sure you're 100% positive the silhouette is an intruder and not friendly, and you give yourself the advantage of being able to clearly see them while they wont be able to see shit.
Well, either a 12 gauge with buckshot, a .45 hipoint or glock, 45 Magnum Revolver, Desert Eagle 50 Cal, or 357 Magnum Revolver. All good choices, I know for sure the shotgun, revolvers, and semi automatic .45 hipoint or glock are all reliable and pretty common
It’s underrated. Yes, the 12 is bigger and packs more of a punch. But by no means is the 20 gauge a laughable matter. It’s all about the ammo. Unfortunately, finding 20 gauge ammunition that isn’t birdshot is hard. 28 gauge has been easier to find honestly.

My 1st thought was Beretta 1301 tactical, 1st 2 shells are 1¼oz slugs followed by 7 rounds of 00buck. Slugs to the chest are putting you on the ground gasping for air (even with plates on) then buckshot to the face for the "coup d'état"
M3 90mm Anti-Tank gun loaded with an M82 round. For when the guy wearing plates that's gonna break into your house is 3000m away and you want to be pro-active.
I keep a 12 g pump mag fed with a 10 + 1 capacity I keep the mag full of birdshot for at home but I do keep some slugs in a shell holder attached if I need some extra power as well as a Smith and Wesson M&p M2.0 .45 chambered in hollow points next to me when I am home at all times. Cooking cleaning and going to the bathroom. I’m not going down like Vincent Vega in pulp fiction.
2nd guy is giving the correct advice. A shotgun during a home invasion is the correct answer. First, the cocking noise let's them know to run away. If they don't, you don't have to aim in the dark like you would with a handgun.

Even with plates and possibly being 4 more behind him you're still in a decent spot so long as you have your bedside mounted MG42 with steel frontal plating with armorcore level 3 bullet resistant glass window (still gotta see what you're shooting at!) You'll be plenty fine! If you don't have this setup I highly recommend you buy my book on home defense!

A lot of times 20 gauge has more kick than 12 gauge since 20 gauge shotguns are usually lighter than your 12 gauge also with 20 gauge you're more likely to run a 3-in shell than the 2.75 shell with 12 gauge

even if an armed invader is wearing hard plates, just aim for their bladder/ pelvis bowl. shots to the pelvis can also prevent a threat from standing up again, which makes it easier to secure their weapon and advance safely.
(edit: the bladder is the target because of the water content, it guarantees reliable expansion of hollow tip ammunition. the kidneys also sit behind that which carry large arteries and lots of water also. just to explain a bit.)

Historically, soldiers would defeat steel plate armor with heavy blunt weapons and then would use swords against unarmored or cloth padded armored people.
Using this knowledge, I think that using a 12g slug would cause enough blunt force trauma to the chest of an individual wearing plates, that it would be more than effective enough for the situation.

@@majincandybeam I respect your opinion regarding that, and I personally made a shotgun so I see where your coming from and wholeheartedly agree that fighting in the dark is a major disadvantage to begin with because it’s a 50/50 chance you hit them and depends on what ammo is currently loaded in the shotgun.
Target loads for example are smaller than buckshot but when fired it sprays in a cone shaped pattern that will pepper a target with 90 % of the load at close range at medium it’s about 70% effective.
A deer slug for example would would be just a large single shot that would hit the body at medium range at close range you would be aiming for the head to achieve a kill shot, the same applies to target loads at close range.
I don’t keep my home dark, it’s similar to a garage apartment all one room, bed close to the door and shotgun by the bed, and small arsenal of blades for close quarters attacks.
I was trained by a retired army sfc who was a family member they survived the Korean Conflict and Vietnam so he trained me for war in all forms from a young age.

Except for the T6 line of rounds by Elite Ammunition, the 5.7x28 cartridges available to civilians are stopped by level IIIa vests if fired from the Five-seveN's 4.8in barrel, let alone level III plates. Firing it out of the PS90 or AR57 is a different story, however.

My old double barrel that is older than me and aim below the belt. That's the problem with body armor. So much isn't covered like the groin and face.
Semi auto shotty, dual loaded buck, slug, buck, etc. and what many people don't mention, a real bright flashlight. They'll be blinded, you'll see your target, then just aim for center of shoulder line, then direct center, then center of waistline. Sure it won't penetrate but it'd be like shooting them with a brick, and some of the buckshot will possibly hit their neck and lower gut, n if youre off to the side by accident, you hit their upper thigh. A strobe light would probably disorient them as well as blind them but would prolly disorient you as well so i wouldn't bother. A dual light/laser module would be handy too, to assist w shot placement while aiming during high stress- but a laser should be a bonus, it shouldn't replace practice.
I wouldnt bother with trying to penetrate the plate, as youll be increasing risk of overpenetration if you miss, and being unable to identify what youll hit if the bullet goes through a wall. Just deliver as much energy as possible into the plate, as quick as possible. Also, the flashlight i think is important. It’s underrated. Yes, the 12 is bigger and packs more of a punch. But by no means is the 20 gauge a laughable matter. It’s all about the ammo. Unfortunately, finding 20 gauge ammunition that isn’t birdshot is hard. 28 gauge has been easier to find honestly.

I keep a 12 g pump mag fed with a 10 + 1 capacity I keep the mag full of birdshot for at home but I do keep some slugs in a shell holder attached if I need some extra power as well as a Smith and Wesson M&p M2.0 .45 chambered in hollow points next to me when I am home at all times. Cooking cleaning and going to the bathroom. I’m not going down like Vincent Vega in pulp fiction.
