    My goodness Mark, what a flying career! You have flown all the Boeing planes from small to large. Not many pilots can say that. Now you only have a few hundred large boats to navigate and captain! What a nice thing to have all your friends come to keep you company. The N51 handled the large seas very well. What a great boat. They are talking 65 knot winds and 10 meter seas for the Vendee tomorrow in the southern Indian Ocean, Can’t wait see what that video is like single handed in those small boats. Hope all the sailors remain safe and boats not sunk. God speed to them. Best to you all.

      Thanks so much, yip it was interesting. Not too keen on much bigger seas unless longer periods between swells

    It's great that you have shared with us the details of your life. We emigrated to NZ in 1960, from Solihull, not far from your dad's hometown of Birmingham. We sailed on the Southern Cross into Auckland. We then journeyed to New Plymouth, where I attended NP boys high school for my last two years of education. NZ schools were tough in those days. Our first two weeks were spent doing army cadet training. Caning across the backside was the favoured punishment doled out to us little cherubs. Teachers would be jailed for such acts these days. I returned to the UK, aged seventeen, once again aboard the Southern Cross. Happy sailing.

      What a dag we went to England on the Southern Cross in 66. Yip got a few across the bum at Scots. Prefects were allowed to administer 1!!

      @AwanuiNZ Forgot to add, I left NZ in October 1965. I only intended to be away for three months, but it took me 43 years to go back for a holiday.

    Great video and superb idea to film from the dinghy, gives it a new dimension. Also nice to have some company onboard, does increase safety and you won't need to stare at the plotters all the time.
    That passage to Menorca indeed looked very rough, guess that was the storm that was hitting Valencia, Taragona and Barcelona, must have been very uncomfortable. But this is the weather that Nordhavn is made to handle and she performed flawless. And that is a very comforting feeling.
    As for the dinghy you may want to think about buying a couple of 2500 kg straps (the wide ones) and then simply screw them onto the sides of the blocks on which the dinghy is resting. Once the dinghy is on you just put the straps over the dinghy and tie it down. We have the same set up and it works fine, even in high winds.
    Guess by now you will have made it further South, hope the weather was better.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yip to everything and now approaching Malaga then on to Gibraltar. Currently have the crane across the dingy….trying to see if there is a downside…none so far

    My thoughts on the Bimini supports, agree it is desirable, I liked the orientation of the 2 strops you had, nothing in your central line of sight, the angles of the two (dividing load and effort) complimented the outboard supports. Just 2 cents of couch professional suggestions. Cheers T

    Handled those big seas with aplomb. That must give you some confidence about ocean passages.
    Maybe get yourself a couple weight belts for when you need to freedive to the anchor or under the boat.
    I reckon 2 weights on a belt will be all you need to achieve neutral buoyancy so you aren't fighting to stay down. More if you wear a wetsuit.

      Awe crap that is a good question…about to set off for Gibraltar then, Portugal, Northern Spain, France (2025) England, Belgium canals to Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, (2026) Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, New Foundland, ICW, (2027) Panama, then mighty Pacific either direct across or up West Coast of US to PNW, Alaska and maybe across Pacific there and home through Asia 2028 - just getting up the Coast of Portugal is my current focus!

    • @stewarthanna
      @stewarthanna 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Then….our paths may cross. We pickup a new boat in 2025 with a plan to cruise following Viking Route to US if all goes well. Alternatively we may cruise, then winter the boat in EU before attempting route to US in 2026. We’re Aussies who live near Boston. Happy to share more via email and maybe our paths will cross.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have never sailed and would not have been able to get Fiona along on a sail boat. Also did want a few more creature comforts. Next thing is I like living above the water not below. Oh and next sail boats noisy and next don’t want to live at an angle next one mistake on your own and you are in trouble next bit old to learn that many new tricks I think great if you have sailed or are a sailor but motor for me. Having said all that I absolutely get how amazing it must feel to cross oceans under your own power.

    Greetings Mark
    Stumbled across your VLOG recently and am enjoying following your travels on your N51 - safe travels
    Your vlogs while in the Cote d'Azur especially interesting as I'll be in that part of the world next July/August so thanks to you have some ideas of additional places to check-out (Antibes etc.)
    Live in Sydney now but am a Hutt Valley boy myself having been born and raised in Lower Hutt (Avalon) - have fond memories of trips to Maidstone Mall in Upper Hutt, Te Marua Speedway and Cobb & Co. Tavern in Trentham as a kid, not to mention getting carsick whenever we traveled over the Rimutaka's on the way to Caterton/Greytown etc.
    Wanted to ask - I 'think' I saw an episode where you travelled by car (cab?) through Alexandria (or was it Cairo?) and this footage went on for a good 10-15 mins as you drove through the city - you were pulled over by police at some point - can't find it now and want to revisit - what episode chronicles that particular part of your adventure?
    There was also footage of you taking in the Suez Canal whereupon you had to leg it as the cops on the other side of the canal spotted you filming, got 'excited' and started heading over to your side of the river to 'have a word'..
    Keen to watch both again
    All the best

      Howdie….pretty sure it was 32 and 33 or very close to that. Alexandria. Great place but it is North Africa! Wow yes Maidstone Mall it was the place to be huh? I worked there in the school holidays as a cleaner. We lived just down the road from Stockcars and used to collect bottles to sell back to the Te Marua Dairy. Small world huh

    And how fast at 45/46 min? Maybe a knot slower would be more comfortable?

    Just a quickkie. Is your Garmin show drive connected to the hydraulics? I caught a glimpse in an earlier video and it was fixed horizontally to some pipework but no obvious hydraulic lines on your shots. It would not surprise me if it was just sitting there!

      Disconnected now with a coupler in between. Just the one line into the manifold had it on it as you saw it.

    How is the ultra anchor performing? It's a bit of a loyalist thing among boaties. A bit like Ford v Holden. Cars to non Antipodeans. Though with Awanui NZ a 4WD comparison might be more appropriate. Toyota v Ford say.
