Cold wet suit solution. Night before you go to bed just heat up a bunch of water and put it in a cooler/wet bag with your wet suit. Nice warm suit to put on to start a cold dive. It is life changing.

Mate slimies as they’re called for bait or blue mackerel as they’re called in restaurants are unreal! Like you say an oily fish that needs to be treated carefully they deteriorate quickly so icing is crucial. I believe there’s some science to the idea that the oil can go rancid when cooking also that is why smoking at lower temps work better and frying in a pan can result in some powerful flavours some people don’t like. I’ve also found cooking these guys over charcoal can have some awesome results. By far though my favourite is to smoke them and have them with some whipped ricotta and honey on toast for brekkie. Have got a video smoking these guys if you want some inspo 🤙🏼 yeww

Thanks Ollie. From a production point of view this might be your best video so far. And for me at least, the subtle shift of emphasis away from big fish and sharks to uncovering the best eating fish contrary to the conventional wisdom, is welcome. Just received my Primal drink bottle all the way over here in the south west of Western Australia. Neat!
Watching you hold the fish on the bait board with your left hand as you draw the knife towards yourself with your right hand.... eeek! Get yourself a filleting glove man and save all those anxious moments.
Love your work. It seems to be helping Senator boats. I saw one of their boats in our local boat dealer’s yard recently.

Well done Ollie! we eat mackerel in Spain when they come by in the months of March-April. We call them verdel or caballa. They are very nice smoked or even baked in the oven. slightly marinated with lemon for 10 mins before cooking it at 180 Cº for 15 mins, with onions and garlick and there you have it!

Nice Video Ollie, always knew pole spears as "Hawaiian slings".
The Fiji version in the 1970's was a length of 3/8th steel rod inside a short length of copper tube and powered by car inner tube and not connected to the diver, no flippers, the local guys from the outer Islands used the small 2 lens swimming goggles and relied on a kill shot.
As head Chef on Castaway Island local Dads, Mums and the kids in their powered dugout canoes with outriggers would land their catch and bring the fish to the Restaurant, the fish going rate was 10 cents per pound and painted Lobster 35 cents a pound.
Penni was the Island Storeman who wrote down the weights and then would give a chit to the fishermen who received cash from the office., I controlled the scales and a 10 lb coral trout would somehow gain extra weight, Penni never knew and the fishermen knew their numbers and with great delight, I'd watch them trying to keep a straight face.
Great place to spearfish and once landed a Spanish Mackerel by luck, the all Indian kitchen staff {$10 weekly wage}didn't believe me and searched the mouth for a hook hole hehehe.

Hey Ollie, I have found the same thing with several of our freshwater “trash fish”. The best example being the freshwater drum. It is the only freshwater species from the Sciaenidae family. They are a freswayer version of the mulloway or Jew fish your area. They are cussed and thrown back by 99% of rod and reel fishermen here. They say the are super bones like a carp(also delicious) or that they taste terrible. They are fantastic! I’m glad they get thrown back. More for me to spear 😁 Great episode by the way! 🐟🐠🤿🔥🔥🔥

I live on the northern California coast. I go down with a short pole spear to get into the Rocky cracks. Then I grab my long gun from my float on the surface…
I also keep a medium gun on the float . Three weapons of choice.
I jump in off the beach or off the rocks and make an incredible day of it .
It’s always a better dive if you prepare some of the catch while you’re at the spot .
Again, great job on the video in all aspects . From Sea Ranch, Bodega, California…👍🍀👍

Mince the leather jacket fillets with some ginger and spring onion, egg white, salt & pepper, spread the mix on fresh white bread, sprinkle with sesame seeds then fry in oil, not too hot. serve on its own or with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy :)

    1. That is a sick pole bro.
    2. The burgers looked insane.
    3. What an insightful thought: that naysaying the edibility of fish has likely stemmed from oldschool practices.
A lesson I learned after hitting a kangaroo with the car and taking it home and eating it after literally 30 people told me not to do it: if someone has never done it themselves, don't take that advice from them. They're just spewing speculative hearsay. There is a way to make almost anything taste good.

I was told my whole life mackeral were no good. I finally ate one and loved it. I think this information is infused into the population by big food. In California mackeral are one of the most common fish. If everyone were eating mackeral that would mean a lot of people would need to go to the grocery store less. You see it with California mussels too. Very plentiful and I believe big food has infused false information about their toxicity and people just simply don’t eat them.
