Restored WWII Grumman TBM Torpedo Bomber Brand-New EngineTest and Flight: Big, Bad and LOUD !

  • This video is of the run-up and flight testing of the Planes of Fame Museum's (Chino, California) brand-new Wright R-2600 engine on our own Grumman WWII TBM torpedo bomber. This aircraft has been plagued with some engine problems over the past years but through the generosity of Tom Friedkin (big warbird enthusiast who donated the new, rebuilt engine, an absolutely HUGE expense, oh my gosh!), and the restoration team lead by Matt Nightingale and assisted by the father and 2 sons of the Pappas family (and also others) who DONATED their time, this aircraft is now up and running, and it is running very, very well. Thanks to everyone involved!

      They remain the only company that's made a craft that landed men on the moon.
      One of the reasons they were selected in the first place was because of their experience with making landing gear that could withstand carrier landings, my guess would be that NASA didn't want any nasty surprises when they touched down on the surface of the moon.

    God I love the sound of a radial engine!!! So guttural!! My first time hearing one was the R-2800 on a Grumman Hellcat... the second one was on a Vought F4U Corsair, and it was even more awesome hearing it on the Corsair!! I would love to hear this engine in person as well :)

    Yep, that is the type of aircraft that I saw 60 years ago that had tried to land or takeoff from a grass landing field in Northwood, North Dakota the landing gear had sunk into the grass landing field and the propeller was bent up where it hit the grass landing field.
    Other than that the plane seemed okay.

      Paladin 06 Freedom doesn’t knock, it rings, and I think that this plane does a bit of both. It knocks around the target and has a lovely ring to its name.

    Not to be nitpicky but if it is a TBM, it's not a Grumman plane but a General Motors manufactured plane. Any Avengers coming from the Grumman factory would be designated TBF

    • @barryervin8536
      @barryervin8536 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And relatively few Avengers came from the Grumman factory. Avenger (and Wildcat) production was switched over to GM so the Grumman factory could be devoted to Hellcat production.

      I know this is eight years old, but yes.
      The Avenger was designated TBF when Grumman was building them, but was revised and redesignated as the the TBM when GM took over production.
